Re: PESO: Queen for a day
On 5/13/07, Christian [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Fernando, please don't take this the wrong way, I don't but this is the type of street shot I just don't get. It's a woman's back as she enters a limo... ok? now what? Slice of life scene? What can I say, I just saw something and pressed the little doohickey ;-) Like a joke, there's no grace in explaining a shot, right? The short answer is that I like it, the long, well, I was strolling down Queen St. on Saturday morning and while I was passing by Toronto's City Hall I see a woman, 2 meters from where I am, entering into a limo, surrounded by three guys, that looked like a Three Stooges version of a bodyguard group, kinda mafia like, and with sunglasses. She wasn't obviously getting maried, just getting into a limo walking a red carpet, and it just spured my curiosity and the whole scene looked funny to me, I took a quick picture with the wideangle prime and the k10d that I'm carrying all the time with me, and kept walking. One of a guys problably saw me, but I didn't care. So I guess, I am just appealing to your curiosity, the same one that I felt when I was there, the wideangle look I like because instead of detaching you with a tele 'voyeuristic' look I am just trying to put you there where I was. And not that much to more say. It just lacks interest for me. Judging for the number of comments it collected here at PDML you are not alone my man ;-) Funny thing is that the next day I posted this photo it got accepted in a heavily curated pool of street images that I like (my first one): http://www.flickr.com/groups/onthestreet/pool/ the Hardcore Street Photography ooohhh ;-) (who knows for how long because the admins of that group usually go back and review old images), nothing really important, but this was a little personal milestone that I was looking for, since I started trying this street stuff a month ago or so. Anyway, in a month from now I could be hating this image anyway, I just don't have the time to dedicate to this the way I should, letting these images decant for a year and reviewing them with no attachment at all, so sending these photos to groups is a quick reality check, that's all. This doesn't mean that I dump my memory cards to the internet, I still try to detach myself from the emotions I felt and select images that I find interesting, but I just found that this is more difficult in this type of photography, you see, there's this thing of facing your fears, in the end you are next to a stranger, taking a photograph, trying to capture a candid moment, and you don't know how that person might react. I don't want to shoot from the hip because it's just too miss and hit, neither I hide what I'm doing, I just do it quickly, most of the time no one sees me, but if I'm seen I just smile. So all this macho game for a shy guy like me just triggers extra emotions I guess, and makes it harder to forget that moment when I took that shot. Then again, my birds might be dull and boring to you. Not even close my friend, let me refresh your memory, this is an extract from one of your last PESO's: Fernando: Great photo Christian!! Sharp, nice light, I like it. I'm amazed by your wildlife photography. And that's sincere man, I like the stuff you do, the fact that I'm trying this now doesn't preclude me from liking your work, just like I can enjoy Beethoven, The Police, Nirvana and Iron Maiden, I just switch on and off different mechanisms in my brain I guess. Just like I didn't like beer the first time I tried it, the first time I saw this kind of difficult-to-like street photo in photo.net, from a guy named Andy something, I disliked it, and kept watching his portfolio because I couldn't believe this guy, sending this snapshots, and acting so cocky and confident about it, until I saw an image that wow'ed me, and then I kept reading, and watching photos, and reading, and well, I developed a taste for this stuff. Anyway, this long reply is here, because I think, that your words but this is the TYPE of 'street' shot I just don't 'get'. Had and extra meaning over a simple criticism to a simple image destined to fade away just like some of the other so many PESO's that die alone here at PDML, if I was right and you really are just a little bit curious about this stuff, and you only have to time to read one of the links that I'm posting, try this one: http://2point8.whileseated.org/?p=57 If you are still reading this and I haven't kill you by boredom, please don't judge this genre by my photos, as I said, I'm just starting, but take a look at these guys (no one is famous BTW): http://www.flickr.com/photos/mecan/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/hinius/ This one used a pentax+da21 for a while but now is shooting film: http://www.flickr.com/photos/shveckle/ And this guy is living in Tokyo and had a series of photos taken with a Mamiya Press camera at night (yep with a big bulbe flash) that I find interesting:

It's a real balance to get a good sharp critter with a nice soft-as-possible (when you want it that way) background. Re: Pentax - Selling HQ and Apparently Drops 645D
My point is that the advantage of a larger sensor is less noise and the ability to print at a larger size (more mpixels), so unless you need the clean high ISO I doubt that you can tell the difference between downsized images for the web coming from a FF camera and a APS-C camera, any extra resolution advantage is lost in the downsizing process, don't you think? Otherwise I don't understand why you want a FF size sensor? Maybe the difference that you are seen have to do with glass and postprocessing? Hi Rob, I didn't forget, you can't forget what you don't know ;-) The discussion I was having with Brendan is related to his ability to spot a web image as taken with a FF camera, in that context, do you still think did is relevant? Thank you very much for the summary Igor, Appreciated. Saludos, Fernando On 5/11/07, Igor Roshchin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Let me add to what people have said. 1. Wolverine Data FlashPac 7-in-1 (aka Vosonic X-Drive II VP2160 if I am not mixing up the model number) It is rather slow: 8'20 to transfer 953 MB in 96 .PEF files, This makes the transfer speed being ~1.9 MB/s. (tested on SanDisk Ultra II 1GB SD card). I haven't tested the transfer rate for CF, but it is not much faster. Rather than this, - I didn't have much problem with it. Battery life: It allowed me to transfer 11.5 times from an almost full 1GB ULtra II SanDisk SD card (96 files, 953 MB) It died on the 12th transfer after trasnferring 52 files (523 MB). So, the total size of files transferred on a single charge: 10.7 GB This was done over two series of transfers within one day: mid-day and than in the evening. The recommendation I hear from some users: It makes sense to empty the drive completely time to time, after it was mostly filled up and then partially erased, and then filled again. This helps to avoid fragmentation on the disk. Apparently, sometimes, high level of fragmentation is not handled well by this sort of devices. Some people even recommend reformating it once in a while. 2. Hyperdrive Space --- Hyperdrive Space is a new model, - the successor of the rather successful HD80 (aka pdx70 model sold by Compactdrive). I believe, Hyperdrive never released any firmware upgrade for HD80 to support SDHC cards, but Space does support them. Fast transfer speed and long battery life are two good features of Hyperdrive Space. I am seriously considering buying one for myself. You may compare prices: various capacities are sold by BH and by hyperdrive.com (hypershop.com) For more information on HyperDrive devices - search forums on dpreview.com. Alternatives I was consdidering for myself: 3. Nexto Ultra from compactdrive.com /eastgear.com It has rather comparable specs to those of HD Space, but I like the verification capability that HD Space has (not first hand experience, rather from description and other users' comments). 4. If you want to have preview (I decided I don't care that much - I cannot justify extra $$ and extra weight) - Epson or Vosonic (6xxx or 8xxx series models, I believe) seem to be very reasonable candidates. If I remember correctly, there were some Vosonic models that don't have video preview but are capable of playing music (mp3). Re: Looking at Pictures and PESO
My subjective opinion ;-) When I opened the image the first thing I looked was the pine tree (is that pine?) on the lower left part of the image. Might be your intention, but that's what bugs me, if that tree was not there I would like the image better, the photo has an interesting triangle shape in the bottom (the one defined by the group of trees in the lower part) the fog separates these trees from the other formation of trees that are in the middle right, and the horizon is nice, although I wouldn't bother seen a touch more of sky. So in mi opinion, nice shapes formed be the trees, would like it better without the pine tree on the lower left. It's probably a nice photo to see large rather than in a postcard. Hi Tom, Let me start saying, that without getting into the story that came with the image (which lifts the image into a different arena) and speaking strictly about the photographic properties of the image, even though I understand the appeal of the photograph and I like (I repeat, I like) the way it's framed and the elements in the photograph, and also I may add that to my eye is an example, albeit not a totally clear one, of a photograph that tells a story (even without Godfrey's explanation I wonder who this person is, if the dog belongs to her, why is she holding her jacket in that way, etc) In my opinion it could be better with a less tight framing, not because I want to see the dog's legs (the way the dog is framed I actually like) but to include maybe some person passing by, looking at her that might actually connect the person with the viewer, etc. Now, I think you are being unfare saying that this is an easy-to-take image, to me that means that you never really tried this genre, which is probably the total opposite to the kind of photography that I see from you, and that I greatly enjoy. Here, you have a split second to decide how to frame a subject, mostly instinctively, that's problably why if you see the contact sheets of some of the masters of street photography you will see that they suck, most of it is done in the editing process, were the eye of the photographer-curator selects what deserves to be published. I for one am happy to see this new work of Godfrey, I enjoy his flawless photographs, but is certainly healthy to see him posting also this other work, I hope he keeps posting more of this. As a viewer I do enjoy looking at this genre, I like this quote that I read somewhere: Street photography is photography for photographers because only knowing how difficult is to get results you learn to enjoy it. That's the best way I can put it. And finally, I'm not a street photographer, now I'm just merely in a phase were I'm trying to take some photographs in the street, I enjoy the process, the thrill and the adrenaline, and from time to time I nail some photos that I enjoy and even share. The rate of pictures taken versus keepers went down, but I find the process more enjoyable, and this has also given me the chance to admire some work that belongs to people that excels in that type of photography. I also welcome the photographs of posters that seem to loosen up a little bit more often, from the top of my head I can name Boris, Jack, Marnie, Paul and the king of them all Frank. Re: How do you guys do panoramas anyway?
Everyone, is pretty much talking about stiching images, but how about when your subject needs to be capture in an instant and you don't have a choice to shoot more that one photo (I'm think strong waves hitting a shoreline or animals/people moving). If you upsize a K10D file to double and crop panorama you should be able to print a nice 10x24 or so, never didn't but should work. I was just reading this guy's blog today (http://pentaxk10dblog.blogspot.com) and he is talking about the Katz Eye focusing screen with panorama lines (too expensive for me, but I guess someone that likes this technique might justify the price). Anyway, just another approach. On 5/4/07, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't mean the stitching together part; I have PS books that tell me how to do that. Is a level needed? How do you make sure that you remain on the same plane (get the horizon on the same plane)? Re: Need help deciding between k100d or k10d
Detailed report Alex!!! On the DA40, store that nice screw cap with your socks and replace it with the cap from a Fuji filmbox, it pops right in and you won't lose any more shots ;-) On 5/3/07, AlexG [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, Got the K100d, FA50mm and DA40mm last week. So far, I've taken about 300 pictures. Here are some comments... FA50 is great. So much better than the old M50... Truly great to have autofocus capability in low-light situations. The old M50 was IMPOSSIBLE to focus on the DL. Lens lookes cheaply made judging by the pics I'd seen. While the aperture ring feels AWFUL (cheap and fragile) in use, it's a non-issue as the lens sits on the A setting all the time. The rest of the lens looks and feels good. MF is nice and smooth, not at all the crappy feel of the kit lens focusing ring. Image quality if of course excellent. Focus speed is very good. DA40mm is very impressive to see. It really is tiny. F/2.8 is far too slow to use indoors. Lens cap is as annoying as everyone says it is. I've missed a few good shots because I had to sit there and unscrew the cap. Construction is good. MF feels OK. Focal length is... strange. A bit too wide for my tastes. I dunno. Using this lens makes it a challenge to get nice composition. I haven't taken many shots in my life but I have a nagging thought that I prefer telephoto. I don't know. Maybe it's a good thing... no need spend money on the FA28mm. But then, I've never been out and about with my DSLRs so I haven't had the chance to do landscape or architectural shots of any kind. Image quality has been pretty nice. So far. I don't know what I was worried about. Verdict? We'll see. AF speed is VERY QUICK (obviously) K100d Excellent camera. -Redesigned casing makes for a better grip. Not as good as a larger camera (right hand pinky still has nowhere to go) but the grip is slightly thicker and the redesigned profile makes it easier to hold. -Some nice usability upgrades! OK button when shooting will show ISO in the VF, slightly more customizable options in the Custom menu... I like it so far. -JPEG quality compared to the DL == No contest. I don't like to post-process. The camera's JPEGs are sharper and have very nice, punchy colors, which is what I like. No complaints! The result is that I can shoot JPEG in any situation now, whereas the DL would only give good results in certain conditions in JPEG. -Shake reduction... AWESOME. Shots as low as 1/15 of a second (with 50mm lens) and pretty much a sure bet. I've gotten sharp pics to as low as 0.3 seconds, but at that speed it's hit or miss and depends on your own hands' stability more than anything else -Battery life - about 400 shots on low-quality 2300mah NIMHs. No complaints. Batteries cost a dollar a piece. -Focus speed: Much improved. Still not that quick in low-light situations but much better than the DL. Where the DL would hunt interminably at low-light, (hunt, overshoot, hunt, overshoot, hunt, lock) the k100d will lock in more quickly (hunt, lock). Good lighting AF is much quicker than DL. Maybe the motor has been beefed up, or is simply being spun faster because the camera can keep up with it now. Multi-point AF is still as useless as ever. I think i'll set it to center-point. -Burst mode doesn't seem to be any faster than the DL. But I don't care. -Shutter (mirror slap) sounds nicer than the DL. A much more damped, high-quality sound. AF sounds nicer too. Sounds like there's less slack between gear teeth. (i don't know if the AF shaft is gear-driven, but that's what it sounds like). -Camera interface: Pretty much the same, but I've noticed images are quicker to load (playback mode). There is also a very quick fade effect when loading a new pic. Very subtle but does a lot to improve the 'feel' of the camera. Makes it appear more responsive. -LCD: Much improved. Better/deeper colors and much better viewing angle. -Pop-up flash is slightly taller. Maybe this helps with redeye. Verdict: If you have a low-end *ist-Dx series cam (basically, any pentamirror *istDx) do not hesitate... Sell it immediately while you can get some good money and upgrade to the k100d. I sold my DL body-only for $300 bucks (USD). For $435, and 50$ rebate, the K100d is a NO BRAINER. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Luckily, the upper and lower sections of the scene were reasonably static, but I couldn't use an HDR technique because of the two ships moving off shore near the docks. One is only visible in the larger web rendering if you look hard (upper left quadrant, bordering the shimmer of light on the water) but is pretty easy to see in the full size print. The blackish portion of the hill is foliage in deep shadow on the nearest portion of the hillside, you're seeing it as a silhouette against the slightly lighter haze behind it. Re: PESO: blah blah blah here, blah blah blah there
This reminds me a joke that I received some time ago: Hockey In Alberta Two boys are playing hockey on a frozen pond in Red Deer, Alberta, when one of the boys is suddenly attacked by a crazed Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy takes his hockey stick, shoves it under the dog's collar, twists it, and breaks the dog's neck, saving his friend. A reporter is strolling by, sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy. Young Flames Fan Saves Friend From Viscious Animal he starts writing in his book. But I'm not a Flames Fan the little hero replies. Sorry, but as we are in Alberta, I just assumed you were says the reporter and he starts writing again. Oilers Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack he writes in his notebook. I'm not an Oilers fan either the little boy says. Oh, I assumed that everyone in Alberta was either for the Flames or the Oilers. What team do you root for? the reporter asks. I am a Maple Leafs fan the boy replies.
