Re: ADVICE PLEASE

2021-08-20 Thread John
I've never been an active plane spotter, but I've been goofy over airplanes for
as long as I can remember. There was a time when I knew ALL of the military
airplanes & who flew them. (nation, service branch, ...)

When I was a child (around 1955 or so) the Air Force still put on flying
demonstrations on Memorial Day.

They would fly formations of aircraft around the state and there must have been
some kind of press release giving a schedule of when they would be passing over
certain points because I remember knowing what time & which direction to look
for them.

Around here it was mostly C-47s & C-119 Flying Boxcars (because Ft Bragg & the
82nd). I don't think the Air Force started using C-130s until after the DoD
phased out those aerial power demonstrations.

And what looked like B-29 bombers, which I now think might have been KB-50
tanker aircraft and KC-97 Stratotankers along with C-97 Stratofreighters (all
developed from the B-29 air frame).

I also remember formations of propeller driven fighters, probably P-51s, but
might have included A-1 Skyraiders. I believe the Air Force Reserve still had a
few P-51s in the mid-50s.

The other thing I remember is B-52 bombers coming in low over US 70 east of
Goldsboro, NC (landing at Seymour Johnson AFB).

They'd have been about a mile from their touchdown point on the runway and they
are *HUGE* when you see them up close only a couple hundred feet off the ground.

The impression from seeing them in the air like that is even more dramatic than
when you see them on the ground when they're on static display at an AFB open house.

And just a bit farther down the road you passed by Cherry Point and there were
often various USMC or Navy aircraft passing low over the highway on their way to
the runway (4,000 ft from the threshold on 5R).

The other one that is amazing to see in the air from that vantage point (close
up under the flight path when they're landing) is the C5 Galaxy, but they
weren't around when I was a child; first introduced in 1970.

Biggin Hill was about 10 miles from where I grew up; we were almost due east of
the airfield (over mostly open country), so whenever Biggin Hill had an airshow
there was a good chance we'd see interesting aircraft flying overhead.

A friend of mine flew out of Biggin Hill occasionally. He took me up a couple
of times. The first time he (probably quite illegally) buzzed our house at a
fairly low level. The second time we popped across the channel to Le Touquet
for lunch. That was an interesting flight; on the way back the fuel gauge
suddenly dropped to zero halfway across the channel. Not only that - the radio
cut out, too, which made it rather tricky to talk to the control tower at Lydd.
Fortunately the problem was a part of the wiring harness coming loose; it took
a technician at Lydd only a few minutes to find and fix the problem. Or course
without a radio it was a little awkward getting permission to land ...

Re: ADVICE PLEASE (WRAP UP?)

2021-08-19 Thread John

That's the first thing you need to do, get in as close as you legally & safely
can.

Manual focus, hyper-focal distance (or whatever is the correct term for that
thing where you pre-set the focus so DOF goes from here to infinity), shutter
speed around 1/125 sec to get an acceptable propeller blur, crank the ISO to get
a decent exposure with the chosen combination of aperture & shutter speed, pan
so the rest of the airframe is NOT too blurred & shoot in bursts.

If you get one exposure as the plane goes past it's 99% likely it's not going to
be good enough. If you get 5-10 exposures on a single pass, it's 99% likely that
at least one of them will be.

I've shot some air-shows and while I didn't get many good images, that's the
combination that seemed to produce the *most* acceptable images.

photograph an eagle in flight at 300m!

I used TAV 1000sec,  f8 exclusively.  Tried single, 5 point & 11 point focusing.
I started by focusing on the moon. In all auto focus modes the camera just
couldn't lock on to the planes. There was no lens creep. Didn't try panning.

Today is the first day of the 4 day competition. Yesterday was official practice
but spectators could not actually get access to the airfield. From today,
limited access will be possible subject to Covid restrictions. There is a large
rooftop area above the terminal which would will be perfect, otherwise I'll just
have to find a suitable place.

Are you sure it's focus that is your problem? A plane flying at 250mph
(which is what the faster aerobatic planes seem to be capable of) will
move over a foot in 1/250 of a second - more than enough to blur the shot.
If you haven't had a lot of practice panning to keep your target relatively
stationary in the viewfinder you're going to see quite a few fuzzy shots.

While you can elimnate much of the motion with higher shutter speeds you
then end up with shots that look strange because the propellers appear to
be almost stationary (e.g. http://www.panix.com/~johnf/temp/FatAlbert.jpg)

I find 1/125 is about the fastest shutter speed I can use for propeller driven
aircraft and still get sufficient propeller blur it doesn't look wrong.

I only ever use manual focus for these kinds of subjects and shooting
situations. I pick the framed field I want to catch the car or plane in, find
something static to set the focus, and then just follow and frame until the
subject hits my "release the shutter" mark, which depends on the particular
cameras response time.

It just takes some practice. :)

That’s a very good point. I would suggest shooting in TAv and really cranking
up the shutter speed. If that makes the blur go away, you can drop the shutter
speed to recover a bit of noise and dynamic range. By the same token, maybe
not shoot wide open to get a bit more depth of field.

I had forgotten about my attempts a couple of years ago

Looking at some photos from a couple of years ago, the blue angels were
practicing for the Salinas airshow and the pot farm I was working at was pretty
much directly under their flight path, so when they were practicing I’d take a
break and grab some photos.

It looks like I’d shoot at f/8 and either 1/800 or 1/1000 in TAv mode when they
were close, using a K-3 and Sigma 50-500:

The Airfield is less than 1Km from my house! About 40 planes are taking part.
The last event like this in Phalaborwa was about 25years ago so this is quite

Advice for Selling Gear

2021-05-10 Thread Doug Franklin

Howdy, folks,

It's been several years since I was active in the group, but I've been
superficially keeping up. My inactivity is mainly because I haven't
been doing as much shooting as I used to. And that's why I'm posting
today. I have some gear I'd like to sell, and I'm seeking the advice of
the group as to the best processes to use. Most of the stuff I want to
sell is older gear, that used to have collector value, but might not,
anymore. For example, I have an original SMCP 400/5.6
auto-meter-but-nothing-else with case, and an LX with prisms.
Definitely not mint. :)

Thanks for your help!

Re: Issue with 70-210 f 4.0~5.6 Need some advice.

2019-11-28 Thread P. J. Alling
Thanks for the advice Ken, but I think I was one of the list members
talking up Eric Hedrickson (I hope I spelled that right), several years
ago.  And yes I've had a F 70-210 repaired by him several times.

However this repair hardly seems worth the postage.   The lens functions
perfectly fine.  The plastic focusing ring popped off the focusing
barrel, it almost pops back on and stays in place, but falls off after a
couple of turns.

I could probably use the lens without and just turn the barrel in manual
focus mode, it but the aesthetics are just wrong.

I'll probably use a dab of rubber cement to hold it in place.

Last weekend I managed to pull the focusing ring off my current copy of
this lens.  Now it won't stay on.  I don't know how to fix this.  I'm
leaning towards a drop of glue on each of the four contact points, but
that would make disassembly of the lens much more difficult if it ever
needs to be done.

Any suggestions?

If they're in that area they should also visit Wells., which is still medieval,
and Britain's smallest city. http://www.visitwellssomerset.co.uk/

Stonehenge too, of course.

There's so much good food in London it can be impossible to choose and you end
up eating McDonalds... I would recommend a visit to Brick Lane in London, where
there are hundreds of excellent Indian (Bangladeshi really) restaurants, as
well as numerous other types of restaurant in nearby Spitalfields. Upmarket
Indian eating is available at Cafe Spice Namaste.
https://www.cafespice.co.uk/

A site worth visiting in that area if they can get to it is Denis Severs House:
https://www.dennissevershouse.co.uk/

There is a cluster of good restaurants in and around Smithfield, Clerkenwell
and Farringdon, where I work, including Michelin-starred Club Gascon and its
baby brother Comptoir Gascon. They also have a place on nearby Chancery Lane
called Cigalon.
http://www.cigalon.co.uk/
http://www.clubgascon.com/about.php
http://www.comptoirgascon.com/

On Clerkenwell Road and Saint John's Square there are several good but not
Michelin-standard eateries, including, if they can find it (on Jerusalem
Passage), the ever-popular-with-PDMLers Dovetail.
http://dovepubs.com/aboutdovetail/

A short walk away you have St John, another Michelin place famous for
"nose-to-tail eating": https://stjohnrestaurant.com/a/restaurants/smithfield ,
and Hix Oyster and Chop House:
https://www.hixrestaurants.co.uk/menu/hix-oyster-chop-house/

Then there's the other 50,000,000 streets of London... Whereabouts in London
are they staying?

If you're in the Cotswolds and going to Avebury, up the Fossway there's a Roman

For good places to eat, you can't really go wrong at any of those places. Bath
has some great restaurants. The Wye Valley has some nice pubs so I believe and
if you can't find somewhere good to eat in London there ain't much point in

If you're in the Cotswolds and going to Avebury, up the Fossway there's a Roman
Villa that's worth a visit. In the general area, there's a wonderful earthworks
called "Maiden's Castle" that's worth a half day hike, and of course there's
the huge Uffington White Horse and the walk along the ridge above it, including
a Neolithic burial site called Waylen's Smithy (the model that JRR Tolkien used
for the Barrow Downs in Lord of the Rings...).

Igor,

Thank you very much for your detailed message.

As you guessed correctly, I lived almost everything you wrote one by one.
This includes the final analysis which includes exactly the same
printers you mentioned.

My printer, which might have printed not more than a hundred images,
is simply, practically dead.
I see that a buying a new one is certainly the better option compared
to replacing the head of the 2880.
Yet, I cannot afford such an amount at this time.
The prices are much higher (both in real terms and comparatively) here.
I still hope I can buy a new printer before the end of this year or

By the way, I have found some unopened (in original packaging) ink
cartridges for the printer.
Their Best Before Date is 09/2015.
I remember buying them while I was quitting printing for an indefinite time.
The cartridges were difficult to find even then and very expensive as well.
So I guess, my poor printer was sleeping for about 4 years.

Perhaps, I shouldn't be allowed to own another one!

Re: OT - Seeking Advice on Epson R2880

2019-03-19 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi Bulent,

I am a bit more pessimistic than Paul: I would expect that the
print-head nozzles will be clogged. The only question if it could

be unclogged or not.

Inkjet printers need regular printing (at least once a month, better every
couple weeks) to prevent ink from drying inside the nozzles. Sometimes,
even after 2-3 months of not printing, I am having hard time getting some
of the nozzles to work. The most recent time it happened, I went through
about 7 cleaning cycles before it started working properly. And my brother
was unable to revive his printer (it wasn't R2880, but its first
successor, Epson R3000).

While considering the options for my brother's printer, - I remember
finding a couple of webpages that described DIY procedures of how to
unclog inkjet head nozzles. I don't have those links, - but you can try
googling.
I vaguely remember that it may have involved some soaking of the
printer head, but I don't remember at all - how (maybe using a piece of a
sponge?).
That, of course, only after the cleaning procedure from the printer
utility repeated many times (10? 15?) will be unsuccessful.
I don't remember all the details, but that procedure didn't help my
brother, and he decided to buy a new printer. (The cost of the head

replacement was more than 1/2 of that of a new printer.)

I would mention one more point to consider.
The cleaning procedure wastes considerable amount of ink.
A full set of inks costs about $110-120. I would compare that
to the cost of a new printer.

I am not sure what is the current exact replacement model for R2880:
Epson P600 or P400.
The current price of Epson P600 at B, after Mail-in Rebate is $473,
and that for P400 is $390. Those prices are equivalent to 3-4
ink-cartridge sets for R2880.

And the new printer, includes a full set of inks.
So, the new printer (minus the cost of a full set of inks) costs about
~2-3 sets of the ink cartridges for R2880.

Note also, that both P400 and P600 have larger size of ink cartridges (14
ml and 26 ml, respectively, vs. 11 ml for R2880).

Lastly, while I've used to buy ink from Atlex.com, a few years ago, I've
switched to B and Adorama. The price from these two is usually on par,
or even slightly lower when you consider the shipping cost that is
separate with Atlex. The difference is more apparent when you need only
2-3 cartridges, and not the full set.

By the way, I've just found that Atlex.com is no more. It was merged

by the same entity.)

Good luck!

There’s a good chance it will work, but I’d install a new ink set before trying
it. You may have to run head cleaning a few times to get it going, save the d
ink cartridges and reintroduce them as needed down the road. I’ve been printing

OT - Seeking Advice on Epson R2880

2019-03-12 Thread Bulent Celasun
I intend to start using my (in electronic hardware terms) antique
Epson R2880 printer again. It had been very lightly used for a year or
so when both of us were a lot younger.

I read about issues like clogging and ways of dealing with them.
Mechanical problems are apparently uncommon...
Buying a new printer is no option (still married!).

I thought I should seek advice before approaching the printer. It is
sitting unused (with ink set on) for at least 3 years (perhaps more).

Is there hope?

Re: Lightroom Advice Needed!

2018-06-04 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hi Christine!

I'd use the Finder to move the catalog folders from your iMac onto one of the
external drives, and open them with the Lightroom app that is installed on the
laptop. The file paths should all be correct that way, and whatever version of
Lightroom is on the machine you're using will always open the same catalog
properly.

Tip on presets and such:
If you have a lot of presets and such other things you use, and presuming that
you have Lightroom set to use them from a central storage point for all
catalogs (they'll be in ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom and its
subdirectories), you can use the Lightroom Preferences to set LR to store the
presets in a subfolder in the catalog folder. Once you do that, restore the
defaults for all the different presets types to create a fully populated
"Lightroom Settings" folder in the catalog folder. Then quit Lightroom, go into
the Finder, and drag copies of all the presets you use that are stored in the
default central location to the new catalog folder's Lightroom Settings
directory. When you re-start Lightroom with that catalog, it will then
initialize the new 'locally stored' presets so everything you were using will
be there for you on the laptop.

I would recommend having a separate backup drive to which you can store the
catalog backups if you use this strategy.

Lightroom Advice Needed!

2018-06-04 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi All:
Hope this post finds everyone well!

Here’s my situation:
1) On my old iMac (2011), I have the stand alone Lightroom version, which has 2
or 3 catalogues.
2) The RAW files for these catalogues are on two external hard drives connected
to my iMac.

Here’s my goal:
1) Bring the catalogues from the iMac into my Lightroom Classic Creative Cloud
version on my laptop. In doing this, I would, of course, then hook up my
external hard drives to the laptop via the two USB drives.

Reasons for setting this goal:
1) For reasons I won’t go into, I’m going to loose free, easy, and daily access
to my iMac.
2) The iMac is getting old.
3) I want all my photos in one place.
4) I want to be more mobile; during lazy evenings when Darrel and I are in the
living room with the tv on, I want to be with him, and I want to work on my
photos.

Here’s my query:
1) To achieve my goal, is it just a matter of just exporting the catalogues on
my desktop to, say, a flash drive, then import these catalogues into Lightroom
on my laptop? Then, of course, plug in my external drives?

2) I back up my catalogues to my external drives. Would it be easier to just
import the back-ups into Lightroom on my laptop?

3) Any other suggestions or tips I should consider?

Cheers, Christine

Doesn't matter. I can't afford either of them, so if I'm going to pine for
something I can't have, it might as well be the half-a-stop faster Pentax lens.

weighs half as much and has way better resolution.

Still got that lens and even use it some times.

Funny you should say that. I brought the FA*400/5.6 to USA in 2004 (for
a roadtrip involving the Grandfather Mountain Nature Photo Week-end),
and managed to drop it from two meters height onto asphalt. The impact
bent the whole optical tube and broke the lens shade, but left the glass
intact.
When returned from repair, it had been collimated and calibrated
properly and was noticeably sharper than before. Repairman told me the
factory specifications, in his words, "had some slack".

The calibration/collimation was a small part of the work and would have
been worth the while even for a lens within specification.

Hmm, just checked, thought there would be one or two, but it turns out the
ones I remembered were made with the BIGMA, not the FA400

But, checking in Lightroom, I see I have 922 images shot with the FA400
so I selected 8 out of those, from the K10, K3 and one test-shot from the K1.

I have exported them in 3000x2000 resolution as JPG.

Some do show some color fringing (green/purple) in specular highlights and
tree-branches
(like the storch-nest, which was NOT corrected in Lightroom., others may have
been)

You can find the JPGS here:

It is about 16Mb to download, and they have full EXIF info.

I've had one for quite a while too. I'd pretty much echo what Jostein said.
I'd really like to try it on a more modern body with better AF.

I haven't used mine in a while. I could be convinced to part with it but I'd
need to have a look at its condition.

I also used to have the F*300 which has the same optics as the FA. I liked
that lens a lot and it pained me to sell it.

If you need it, buy it.

I bought a used FA* 400, took it to Alaska and got some nice shots of bears
etc. When I got back home, I sold it and bought a used FA* 300. Both are fine
lenses, but for me (even on the K-1) the 400 is just too long. On an APS-C
body, it is way too long! Again, for me, it is not usable without a tripod, and
it has too narrow a field of view for what I am likely to shoot. If/when I go
back to Alaska I may buy or rent a 400mm for the trip but I can’t see keeping
one on the shelf in my closet.

I keep hoping that Ricoh will release a 1.4x teleconverter for the K-1 bodies,
and that would allow me to have both!

Hello Subash,

I have had the FA* 400 ever since I ownded the PZ1 in the film days.
It is easy to hadle (has a tripod collar) but can also be handheld quite easy.
It is pretty fast in focussing and optical quality is good (as expected for a *
lens)

However, it DOES show purple fringing in high contrast areas, like tree
branches against the sky.
Depending on the subject and lighting, it can be cured reasonable in post (I
use lightroom)
but it will not be perfect ...

I have used it on all digital bodies I owned, including the K3 and K1, but most
of the time I prefer
to use the Sigma 50..500 zoom, when the extra weight is no issue.

So, I'd like to clarify what I wrote earlier: I do not remember anything

So, Subash, don't rely on my account on this aspect of the lens

Re: lens advice: FA* 400

2018-05-18 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Paul,

While I am not arguing with your statement that this lens is less likely
to fail, I am not sure if there is sufficient information for that
conclusion about the more recently produced lenses of this model.

If you are judging by the people reporting in the regular forums, like
dpreview, pentaxforums, etc., - it is not a good measure, as there is
an implicit bias there.
The sheer fact that this lens has been on the market for a while, means
that much fewer people from those forums are buying it today (then in the
first few months/year on the market).
This means that if the lens is still as vulnerable as before, you wouldn't
hear about it as much as before.
Also, since the SDM failure is well known, some people do not see reason
to publicly complaining about it. (I had an SDM lens [a different
one] failing recently, and this is the first time I am mentioning it.)

Paul, I am not saying your conclusion is wrong or right, I am just saying
I don't think we have sufficient supporting information available, unless
you have some other sources (e.g. from Pentax-authorized repair center).

However, you might be right that DA* 300mm in general might be less prone
to this problem (for an unclear reason). This has been discussed in this
earlier article on PF (based on the survey they conducted):

https://www.pentaxforums.com/articles/photo-articles/pentax-sdm-failure-survey-results.html

(Also, note, that that PF article also mentions lack of "newer" vs "older"
difference. But, at the rate of the failures reported for *this* lens, - 8
out of 120, - they do not have statistically sufficient data for *this* lens.)

HTH,

Igor

It's a fine lens, very sharp and well made. Perhaps its best characteristic is
that it is almost as sharp wide open as it is stopped down. If you want to
shoot it hand-held, this matters, because you can then shoot at a higher
shutter speed.

You won't be disappointed.

Subash,

I am sure some people will respond with more detail. But I thought I'd
offer the little bit I know about this lens.
Some 12-14 years ago, when I was looking for a fast 300-ish, I also
considered FA* 400 available from a local photographer through Craigslist.

I met him in a shopping area parking lot, and tried this lens on my camera
for some 20 minutes
(I don't remember, it was probably *ist DS, or maybe it was already K-7).

After this speed-dating, I liked this lens. I would probably buy it now.
But at that point, it was not what I needed (a bit too long, and
not fast enough for my needs).

It's well built.
You definitely need a good tripod/monopod with it, but you know that.

I do not remember if it was one of the lenses that was yielding some
purple fringing on digital bodies. Either I was not concerned much about
it, or it was not there (or it was very mild).

Re: Advice at various stages

2018-05-09 Thread Igor PDML-StR

I think there is such a big multitude of parameters in photography that
one can learn some new aspects even after many years of experience.
I am sure that even world-renown photographers can learn some new
techniques in the areas of photography (genres) that they haven't worked
in.
So, if a photographer feels he/she has hit a plateau, I would offer a
challenge of getting into a new photography genre. Mastering it up would

probably provide some useful insights for other photographic activities.

E.g. for the people who are experts of working with studio lights, -
offer trying to do a low-light photography of dancers or photography of
stage artists (musicians, dancers, actors) in ambient and better yet
dynamic light.
People who are experts in landscape photography, should try, e.g.
"posed" portraits in studio settings.

And so on, - the multitude of areas is very large.

I remember that when I started photographing dancers some 13+ years ago,
that was a considerable challenge that was very different from most things
I've been photographing before. Even coming to photographing tango from
swing dances brought some new challenges. (You know this, so, you will
likely understand what I am trying to say here.)

When I started photographing ice skating a bit over a year ago, - I felt I
had to figure out some new area. The experience in dance photography was
helpful: after all, the ice-skaters also dance to music, but they do it
differently. While (more than half of the time) the light is not as low as
in the dance avenues we both are familiar with, - the speed is much
higher, and the area skaters cover is much larger, and the quality of
light could be better - so some new challenges related to the optimal
exposure arise in a new way. (And when the performance is of the
theatrical "spot-light" type, - i.e. with the dark arena and 2-3
spot-lights on the ice-skater(s), it becomes even more challenging.)

What's interesting is that after a few--months break between the events, I
feel that I've forgotten some things that I've learned before, sometimes
getting "D'oh!" moments.

So, the advice would be - trying new genres outside of one's "comfort
zone".

Just the concept of “new can have many shades of meaning:
New to photography, or new to taking their photography seriously.

New to digital photography.

Probably the most important thing I ever learned about photography is the
value of light. I had been using a camera since I was in my single digits
and it wasn't until my 5th decade that I was finally came to understand the
value of quality light. Up to that point, if there was enough light, I would
take the photo and live with the result. Over the years I was able to take a
very few images that I thought were good, but I still had no idea about the
quality of light and its impact on an image. After sitting through many
slide reviews by several pro photographers, I started to see and understand
the impact that good/great light has on the image.

Super Moon because it's close to perigee (appears about 7% larger).

Blue Moon because it's the second full moon in the month of January.
Blood Moon because it's going to be a total lunar eclipse.

It's a fairly rare thing for all three to occur during the same full
moon. The last time one was visible from North America was 150 years
ago.

I think we're supposed to be able to see the beginning of the eclipse
from here on the east coast (of North America).

battling this cold I work up more than the usual amount of times and
when I checked the clock and saw it was
about an hour before the time when it would be lowest and reddest I went
to the living room window .. the position of the moon at that point did
show me a bit of a pale yellow-orange look but I couldn't have viewed
the best color given building blockage as it dropped lower.   But today
it was really nice to see some stunning shots taken here (on TV) when
the local news came on.

Re: HELP! Advice on Lunar Eclipse Photography

2018-01-31 Thread John Francis

According to my local news broadcast (usually fairly reliable)
the next triple-hit will be in 2028, with another one coming in 2037.

But maybe the 2028 one won't be visible from Australia.

Lunar eclipses happen a couple times a year, and are visible from about half
the planet. Are you
sure the next one isn't until 2037?

Mark, for you, with the sunrise at 6:59am, it was probably bad.
But in Detroit, which is considerably west from you, the sunrise was at 7:47am.
So, I'd say the partial eclipse (in "umbra") was probably still visible for
Ken. (Ken, how was it?)

In our neck of the woods, we had a very tight schedule:
   Moon's
 Azimuth Altitude
  h moo
Moon enters umbra 2018 Jan 31 05:48.1 279.5 17.5
Moon enters totality 2018 Jan 31 06:51.4 286.5 4.8
Moonset2018 Jan 31 07:19 289.8
Sunrise: 7:17am

The totality was starting when the moon was rather low, and would be
obscured by the houses nearby.
So, last night I thought of the observation point that is on the
"hill" (it is very flat here, so, it is hard to find a real hill),
and on the eastern side of the major highway (which doesn't go "high" in
this area).
So, there was a clear view to the moon as the totality was starting.

The timing was perfect: we didn't have to wake up to early, just 10
minutes earlier than usually. We left from our house some 15 minutes prior
to the time we usually leave for the school bus. We saw the onset of the
totality, and then drove to the school.

It was a very good timing for us. The sky was a bit bright because of the
approaching sunrise, but overall, everything reasonably visible.
No need for early rising and no school classes missed.

Cheers,

Igor

Re: HELP! Advice on Lunar Eclipse Photography [traveling-with-tripod question]

2018-01-31 Thread Stanley Halpin
Dan, you say
> I used to bring a tripod with me, but with the tighter baggage regulations,
> I gave it up a few years back,

Not sure what baggage regulations you refer to.
I used to remove the head from the legs, put my tripod inside my large
suitcase. Larger suitcase than I needed, but anything for the tripod…
Every single time, that suitcase was spotted and opened by TSA. And they often
don’t do an acceptably neat repacking job.

Someone on this list, one of the other relatively frequent travelers (Mark?
Ken? Paul?) said “not to worry, just carry it with you.” So, with some
trepidation, I did. And have continued to do. My Lowe camera backpack has
straps designed to hold a tripod. Works well.

My usual first flight from our small regional airport is on a CRJ-200 50 seater
commuter jet. My camera backpack will not fit in the overhead. Surprisingly it
does fit under the seat in front of me. So, once aboard, the tripod comes off
the pack and into the overhead, the backpack goes under the seat, and off we go!

I do take the ball head off the tripod to reduce the weight and bulk of the
tripod; the head goes into the backpack. The backpack often gets a 2nd or 3rd
look from the x-ray guy, but I can’t remember the last time anyone asked me to
open the pack to inspect my gear.

For W-Europe unfortunately no eclipse. All we have right now is a blue

Super Moon because it's close to perigee (appears about 7% larger).
Blue Moon because it's the second full moon in the month of January.
Blood Moon because it's going to be a total lunar eclipse.

It's a fairly rare thing for all three to occur during the same full
moon. The last time one was visible from North America was 150 years ago.

I think we're supposed to be able to see the beginning of the eclipse
from here on the east coast (of North America).
