Based on comments by the list, I thought I would try a few more things and show you what I had to work with. The story I told is basically how the shot came to be - whether you agree with my thought process or not, that is why I took the shot. The issue I had was harsher lighting than I wanted - time of day was a big factor and couldn't be helped. Anyway, here is the shot I had to work with and some variations on what I showed you. You may have not found quite the optimal rendering yet. But, personally, I think #2 borders on it. Turn that into a black and white. I think it improves the shot to be able to see some indication of the sea. And if you don't mind, I might take the original and play with a bit myself, I am not bad at artifying things. Godfrey's good at rendering, maybe he has some suggestions. I'll post my attempt tomorrow. Hope that helps. Re: PESO - End Part II
Bruce, I did these in about 10 minutes. I had 10 minutes to spare. :-) I will take them down once I know you have seen them. Some people are going to tell you to go with a straight BW conversion. But in this case, I think you are right, it needs to be punched up. http://members.aol.com/eactivist/try1.jpg BW conversion, with less red to gray it down http://members.aol.com/eactivist/try2.jpg above version but now with brightness up to +35 and contrast up to +49 http://members.aol.com/eactivist/try3.jpg above version, posterized, level 2 All done in Elements 5. Only the last is really artified, the previous are just playing with conversions and brightness/contrast. I, personally, like #2, and think you ought to aim somewhere in there. A BW but with brightness/contrast pumped up to eliminate a lot of the grays while keeping the darker grays and BW. Only thing is you have to gray it down first so you don't lose all detail. Either this is annoying or helpful. Hope the second. Re: PESO - End Part II
The original and Alternative #3 (bw) are the best. You see, Bruce, to my eye what became of the ocean on the original image you presented did not come across like water. I thought it was a bit more soil, just without any vegetation on it. Actually, I think that the original shot with just a bit of an S-curve would be the best option.
