There's a "town" in North Carolina spelled "Conetoe" ... pronounced

OTOH, "Lizard Lick" is pronounced just like it's spelled.

These things are quite straightforward really. The simple rule is,
however it's spelt, that's not how you say it. If you say it the way
it's spelt everyone will know you're a tourist, and charge you £300
for an ice-cream.

Cirencester= Siren sessta
Gloucester = Glossta
Bicester = Bissta

Leominster = Lemsta
Southwark = Suthuk

Greenwich = Grinnidge

The only exception to the rule, and only in the context of this one
place, is Leicester Square, which is invariably pronounced Lie Sessta
Squaw, with the emphasis on Sessta. Nobody can really explain this,
but it may be that on this one occasion the locals just gave up trying
to teach the correct pronunciation to foreigners, and instead put
ice-cream prices up to £350, plus 10% if want a flake and crushed nuts.

I think this particular bit has been recently rebuilt, as it's looking a
bit too clean and new.

The area is just off a Roman road called Akeman Street which was the
road that lay between Cirencester (pronounced 'sirensester') in
Gloucestershire (pron 'glostersheer') and St. Albans in Hertfordshire.
The actual path is on a short offshoot of the main road about 1/4 mile away.

It's pretty cool to walk along and realise that many centuries earlier
there would have been horses and carts trundling along the same place at
the same pace. I wonder how many would have stopped at a vista and
pulled out paper and chalk to record the view?

No, it opened with the bottom third obscured and a whole lot of headings,
etc. at the top. I could only see the main part of the wall after scrolling
down.

Hi Alan,

Do you mean that the image is too big for your browser? It is sized at
1000 pixels on the longest edge.

The image is slightly cropped as it is, with a bit off the bottom and
right hand side.

I'm not mega happy with it so might revisit it at some point but without
seeing what you saw, impossible to say!
