Cricket's easy.

You have two sides; one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out and, when he's out, he comes in
and the next man goes out to be in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in
goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out and, when
he is out, he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when
the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have got out and both sides have
been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out,
that is the end of the game.

Much simpler than American handegg.

I read up about Pixel Shift. Your new camera & several others now have
built in routines but, sadly, not my K5. However, Pixel Shift can also
be achieved via Photoshop so I'll have a look at that.

If you need to know anything about cricket, I can fill you in. Played a
lot up to Club level in my youth. International Cricket, is in reality a
"different" game with the advanced skill levels needed to succeed - like
in any top level sport I suppose.

The problem I was having relates, I think, to Fuji packing 40mp into
an APS-C sensor and how sensitive that is going to be to even
microscopic camera movement.
Yesterday I was using the mechanical shutter and my usual casual
approach to things.
Today I used the self timer, electronic shutter, turned off auto focus
and even turned off the noisemakers that are supposed to mimic the
sound of a shutter firing.

These images were shot with the 60mm macro lens

First we have an image using the Accurate colour mode which uses 20
exposures to give full color information to each pixel.

Nest is a crop of an image shot in high resolution mode which uses 20
exposures to extend the size of the image to

10304 x 15456 pixels

Enjoy, but be aware these files are upwards of 1mb each.

PESO x2: Fly Agarics

2022-02-27 Thread David Mann
While I was running up on the hill I encountered a few patches of fly agaric
mushrooms. I don't see that type often so it was nice to see so many in one
outing. Sadly they're a sign of our wettest February on record. Most were quite
small but the biggest one I found would have been around 6 or 7 inches in
diameter.

These are just phone pics which I took to show my daughter.

Wow, that's impressive. My daughter liked it too.

The fungus on our tree is quite large and it's right down at the base. We had a
smaller tree down by the river which split and fell in a storm a few months
ago. That one was rotten inside with fungus on its trunk that we hadn't
noticed. We've been thinking about getting some arborists in at some stage
anyway, sadly the two trees with fungus were ones I'd been wanting to keep.

Dave

I've seen very small mushrooms growing from crevices of tree trunks before but

to be cut down as a result as it'll be weakening the wood.

Re: PESO x2: Mushrooms

2021-12-28 Thread Henk Terhell
Í don't know. Contrary to eastern and southern Europeans, most people
in our area have little knowledge of the edibility of mushrooms and
are cautious therefore.
And it is officially forbidden to gather mushrooms in our nature reservates.
I once followed a short course in fungi and in the field the
instructor chewed on many mushrooms as a way of identifying.

Of course it is hard for me to tell from the other side of the world,
but in my European books it looks closest to Rhodotus palmatus (netted
Rhodotus or rosy veincap). Though rare in W-Europe a spike has been
seen of this mushroom due to the Dutch elm disease.

Yes, I'm aware of that. There's no chance of me trying to eat one as I don't
like mushrooms anyway. I've also mentioned to my daughter many times that many
poisonous mushrooms look like edible ones so she knows not to handle them.

aside to Ralf - I think Dave knows that - since he named it .  The nice

OK I decided to have another look at the rendering and I've been learning a lot
more about Adobe Camera Raw in the process.

I've boosted the exposure a bit, tweaked the colour and applied some (well, a
lot of) noise reduction, masking out the areas where I wanted to keep fine
detail. I've also toned down the white background highlights a little. I am
absolutely loving the adjustment brush tool. It would be nice to have
Photoshop-style selection tools but I think I can cope.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Due to shooting wide-open and having the
exposure wrong I wasn't expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised to have
them come out so well. I might revisit the rendering if I get some time later.

I particularly like the Grape Hyacinth: the nice range of colors is well
contrasted by the background.

The color of Helleborus (at least this one) is not among my favorites
(it's close to what I call "dirty colors" [as opposed to "clear" colors]).
And I am not sure how it would look, but I would have tried to keep the

Re: PESO x2: Monarch

2020-02-28 Thread David Mann
I just looked it up, our ones are indeed the same ones from the American
continent.

I've always found that macro lens to be very versatile. It's always quite easy
to find a few interesting things to photograph in the garden. The only
downside is that you may find yourself in a few contorted positions in the
process. I was using a watering can as a makeshift tripod for those ones.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: PESO x2: Foundation Car Park, Street Art

2019-07-13 Thread David Mann
There are charging points scattered around in a few carparks, particularly the
brand-spanking-new multilevel building in the centre of town. Most supermarket
carparks now have a couple of chargers. I think this one was just somebody
being opportunistic. There are many empty building sites which have been
converted to unsealed carparks.

Despite that photo the rebuild is progressing well. Anyone who's visited the
city before wouldn't recognise it.

The scaffolding and scissor lift are part of another building which I assume is
being repaired.

This mini project came about in a way because of Annsan. :)

A couple of years ago I bought a book of the nude and erotic work of
Jeanloup Sieff from Ann. I loved it and considered how I might like to
pay homage to him one day.

Camille approached me to shoot nudes. She had taken a half year break

suggested that we use Jeanloup Sieff as an inspiration and she loved

Well you're preaching to the converted here Bruce - as you know.

Jeanloup Sieff was a major inspiration for me in my college days.
Although I never had the wherewithal to take on nude studies as a
student (the studio was always in use by advanced students with plenty
of self-confidence), I did look at the reportage and other work he did,
and tried to emulate his ideas.

Of course, later in life, one appreciates the nuances and subtlety of
some of the images I once thought of as pretty pedestrian, and
admonishes the work that (at the time) seemed avant-garde. I guess
that's life.

Sieff's nude work is sheer brilliance for me, and I have to say I think
in these two photographs I think you've managed to capture two of the
contrasting styles of Sieff very well.

The first (Nude study #1) is very representative of Sieff in both pose
and lighting. Really like it, and a mischievous hand adds a nice touch
(quite literally). You've really nailed it mate. Superb homage.

The 2nd (Camille in garters and stockings) is a raucous pose with huge
sense of fun and the unexpected. I remember looking at similar images as
a student and really not liking them at all. Decades later, with a
little of life experience under the belt, I now know how wrong I was.
What I really like here is the hint of tattoo that adds an extra bit of
interest - creating brief uncertainty - and finally a shrug of the
shoulders. One isn't certain if it is a hidden message in light and
shadow or some other playful thing.

In fact, it was Sieff's way of saying 'actually I don't care what you
think'. For as he was so infamous for saying: 'I make the photographs
for myself. If you should like them as well, too bad!'

Very well done mate. Take my hat off to you.

And maybe eat it.

;-)

This mini project came about in a way because of Annsan. :)

A couple of years ago I bought a book of the nude and erotic work of
Jeanloup Sieff from Ann. I loved it and considered how I might like to
pay homage to him one day.

Camille approached me to shoot nudes. She had taken a half year break
from modelling, had recently been working out, was feeling great about
her body, and felt that now was the right time to end the hiatus. I
suggested that we use Jeanloup Sieff as an inspiration and she loved
the idea.

We shot on Monday. Here are the first two retouches I arbitrarily selected ...

PESO x2: Ducks

2015-03-06 Thread David Mann
I managed to take the 400mm lens for a walk when I was in Wanaka a couple of
weeks ago.

An NZ scaup poses out of the water:

And a closeup of a mallard (I rarely bother to photograph these now):
http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/880/#peso

Both are cropped, but not by much.

Cheers,

Re: PESO x2 - Sunday in the office

2015-03-02 Thread Bruce Walker
Thanks, Paul.

This is the very first time I have intentionally toned an image for
viewing on paper. :) I am modelling the look after Mapplethorpe's
images as seen in his book Some Women (Bullfinch Press, 1989) and
almost all the tones lie in the extreme end zones; ie really dark and
really light. Yes, challenging to smartphones and other portable
devices, but them's the breaks. :)

I expect to be printing a few of the portraits for exhibition in the
spring, and I'm pretty sure I'll have to do a few test prints before I
get it right.

enhance the separation just a little more.

Best spent Sunday afternoon in ages. A local (Brampton) jazz singer
named Aly Westwood came over to my home office studio and let me
decorate her with fancy necklaces and experiment with lights.

2015-03-02 Thread Paul
Very nice. I like them both but more especially the b/w. The pearls
are great on the dark sweater. While the separation of her hair and
sweater from the background is more evident on my calibrated monitor
than my iPad, I'd like to see what it would be like with a smidge of
backlighting to enhance the separation just a little more.

That's not the way I've always imagined Alice Springs - you must have got
something wrong.

It wasn't the way I'd imagined it either; maybe they'd dropped us somewhere
else and told us it was Alice.

I had however imagined the heat...

Looks like city planners everywhere have the same handbook.
