Thanks to all who responded.

The point of some computers not having an optical drive is a good one.
In any case, - it looks like there course of action has changed anyway.

So, in the end, I will not be distributing anything, except for a link to
a password-protected website with HTML galleries.

PS. Larry, it looks like your messages didn't make it to the

But it made it to the pdml.net own archive...

Not installed. I am considering that it would run a photo viewer or a
web browser (unless autorun is disabled). That's for those who don't
know what to do with Jpeg files..

Ok, the URL you included was about how to make cross platform
*installation* CDs.

My experience with Windoze, if you insert a CD with just image files &
no autorun, it opens an AutoPlay Dialog, with options to import photos
or to open the folder to view files using Windows Explorer. Windows
default import setting copies the images into "My Pictures".

In Explorer, you can double click the photo's icon and it will open in
whatever photo program you have installed. If you don't already have a
program installed for viewing photos, it opens with "Windows Photo Viewer.

Probably the more important consideration though was Larry's point about
so many of the newer computers no longer having CD/DVD drives. None of
the MacBooks have them. I don't think even the iMacs have them anymore.

Just noticed you can even set it it to a 'slideshow' modus (after selecting all
files).
It is in the 'view' menu, just like the 'full screen'.

it is quite easy to view a complete folder of JPG images.

You use 'Finder' (the directory browser) to navigate to the folder,
double-click to open it.

Once in the folder use 'cmd+A' to select all files, the double-click on any
of the selected ones to open all of them in preview.

Preview has a sidebar with thumbnails, and you can use up/down arrow keys

Boris and Stan:
Yes, I hear you, and I use a very similar way of passing photographs to
people - via various *box cloud storage or my-own website.
In this case, the format is chosen by the teachers. It's either because
they are used to that, or because they want to give people something
tangible (or both). I will try to talk to them, but I am not going to
insist. (And I won't be burning all the CDs myself. ... probably )

Stan, thank you for offering to check the format.. Unfortunately, it will
be happening all too quickly that I won't have time for that.

that they will given on a CD to each kid in the class.
(I've been taking a lot of photos at various school events throughout the
year.)
So, I am thinking how to structure that CD. So, all your practical
suggestions are welcome.

Here is the way I am thinking about it right now:
1. The simplest thing would be just to have a bunch of folders that are
titled as date+event name.

Since it should be easy for the end-users (parents, and not all of them a
computer-comfortable or even computer-literate), I am thinking if it would be
better to build also simple HTML galleries (in addition to just photos).
Personally, as a customer, I'd prefer just a simple set of folders with
JPEGs to be viewed by a "standard" (or customer-installed) photo viewer, but
I am a bit more computer-literate... What do you think?

2. I can set "autorun.inf" for Windows to start something... (e.g. the main
index.htm file if I were to create web-galleries)

While there are ways to do the same for Mac, e.g. by following this scenario:
http://jordan.broughs.net/archives/2008/03/creating-cross-platform-windows-and-mac-installer-cds
I don't have an easy access to a Mac, so, it is not an option for me...
So, most likely, even if I were to do that for Windows, nothing special will
be done for a Mac.

3. From what I understand, starting from OS-X, a joliet-format CD is not a
problem for a Mac anymore (i.e. I don't need to worry about building a
"hybrid"-format CD).
But I wonder, with a modern Mac, what happens when you insert a CD with a set
of folders containing JPEGs into a Mac: will it offer to open a photo viewer
(if nothing is configured to happen as discussed in #2 above)?

4. I assume some of you may have provided your customers with a CD of
photographs. What type of format did you do in that case? Anything beyond
just a simple set of JPEGs?

Thank you,

Igor

One other thought. Aren’t there free slide show viewers? For both Mac and
Windows? Set up one of each with pointers to the root of your image folder
structure, copy and include on the CD...

With a direct link to that specific gallery and easy navigation once there it

Many similar options but Zenfolio is the one I know. And a one-year

Re: Need advice: Photo Collection on a CD

2017-05-17 Thread Boris Liberman
Igor, the last time I gave out CDs (it were actually DVDs) was
gazillion years ago. It wasn't even the 6th grade of my older
daughter, while she's finishing 10th grade now.

I have started with DropBox account where I would put 20x30 cm
printables and share the link to the folder of each event via e-mail.

The problem with DropBox was that it had too small a size, so I went
down the Google route. Nowadays, I'm uploading 20x30 cm printables to
Google Drive (15 GB free out of the box, so to say, no pun here) and
sharing the links from my cell phone to the WhatsApp group. This is
for my younger daughter who's now finishing 3rd grade in school. This
really works like a charm.

I remember having most annoying problem with the DVDs/CDs - each
parent wants specific sub-set of photos, where their own kid shows.
So, I've spent lots of time doing all kinds of stuff. Say, there were
few parents who asked me to please give them photos of just their kid
for bat-mitzvah/bar-mitzvah albums. I obliged, but it was laborious.

With things such as DropBox or Google Drive - each one just gets to
easily page through all the pics and download whatever they want - no
involvement from me.

Boris
