Most computer stuff would be recyclable here. The manuals and suchlike under
the paper route and the hardware under electrical end of life regulations.

RE: Vintage Enlarger

2020-10-23 Thread jcoyle
I signed up with Freecycle on Tuesday, and on Thursday someone posted they were
interested in old computer gear: today I
will unload a pile of both working and non-working items including original
manuals, cables etc - everything computer
bods collect over many years, and never throw away in case we might need it.
So, having decided I'll never, for
example, need a parallel interface cable again, out it goes!
Free, they collect, and it goes to someone who is interested, so not to
landfill - can't get better than that.

Re: Vintage Enlarger

2020-10-22 Thread John

As it happens I had to have something shipped a couple of weeks ago.

I found a replacement for my old Troy-Bilt Super Tomahawk chipper/shredder that
I could afford ... only drawback was it was up at a farm equipment dealer in
Michigan north of Detroit. I wasn't looking forward to driving all that way to
get it. I was afraid it was going to cost too much to have it shipped.

When I talked to the dealer they suggested I contact Yellow Freight for a quote.

It cost less to have it shipped to Yellow Freight's local terminal in
Morrisville & pick it up there than it would have cost to have it delivered here
to the house.

Or to make the round trip to go get it.

They have a web site where you can fill out the form & get a bill of lading for
the shipment & you can call their support phone number where someone will walk
you through filling out the form.

Anyway, if someone wants it & it's too big for UPS, if they can get to a nearby
freight terminal to pick it up & Dan can deliver to a nearby terminal, the
shipping cost may be less than you think.

Do a little checking to see if you can find a trucking company that will
include it in an LTL shipment. That might bring shipping costs down quite a
bit, though delivery times can increase somewhat.

When I was selling brick, one time I had a couple of cubes sent from a
plant in North Dakota via LTL. When I got to work the next morning, there
was a low deck with a ginormous piece of road building equipment on it and
my cubes of brick looking like wheel chocks in front of the tires. The
shipping was about half of a full load price using the same company.

I have two enlargers - my first, a Gnome 35mm from 1968, and an LPL700 with
dichroic colour head, and three enlarger
lens, a Wray 50mm , an El-NIKKOR 50mm and a Schneider-Kreuznach Comparon 75mm,
plus all the gear for home enlarging and
printing. Haven't actually done any for a few years now, but everything is
there if anyone wanted it. Tried to find
anyone (schools, clubs, etc. ) a few years ago to give or sell to with no
responses - maybe now that there are some
people taking up film again it might be different.

I've just signed up for Free Cycle, so I might give it a go.

But will they work with non-vintage film?

One of these days I might just drag out one of the cassettes of Kodak Royal
Gold 25
that have been sitting in my freezer for well over a decade, and fire up an MX.
I should at least take a look in the box to remind myself what else is there.

Less Than full Load.
Technically couriers are LTL shippers with an enlarged customer service
department, but they are geared towards smaller parcels.
A boxed enlarger would be on the small side for an LTL freight shipper who
will have palletized freight loaded most of the time, but on the larger
side for a courier such as FedEx, UPS or the post office that is more used
to carton shipments.
Be prepared to put your product onto a pallet for LTL shipping.

I had 3 colour enlargers and a cold light head enlarger that I tried to
sell a few years ago. Because of the size and awkwardness of them, they are
expensive to ship directly, as you have found, and fragile to ship LTL, but
if well packed should be OK.
I was able to sell one of the colour head units, ironically the cheap
Beseler C67, and ended up sending a Beseler 23C, a 45C and a Zone VI cold
light Beseler 4x5 to the dump. I didn't get any nibbles on them that I
could convert to a sale.

I'm not sure how desirable an old DeJur enlarger is. They are cool looking,
but didn't have a great reputation. I had a 5x7 DeJur for a while when I
bought my first 4x5 camera, a Crown Graphic, when I was around 17.
It was a difficult enlarger to use.

Re: Vintage Enlarger

2020-10-20 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks.

We do have a local freecycle, and I have used it in the past. Lately, most
things are being grabbed up by "flea market" types for resale. I'd like to
contact a local photography club or some adventurous local young
photographer who might actually try to put it to some use, instead of being
taken and sold as a prop for a local coffee house.

When we lived on a busier residential street, I could leave things on the
sidewalk with a "free" sign, and they would be taken. Now, at the end of a
cul=-de-sac with only 6 homes, only USPS, UPS, FedEx, and Amazon drive
by. 

If I don't get a better idea, I'll use freecycle.

Re: Vintage Enlarger

2020-10-20 Thread Toine
Maybe the lens is a gem. If you're lucky it has a M39 mount and
aliexpress and others offer adapters from M39 to M42 or K mount. Add a
helicoid and maybe you have a new lens.
The column could function as a nice copy stand with some DIY to attach
a Manfrotto or Kirk adapter.

At this point, *all* enlargers are vintage enlargers.

Dan - we use Freecycle a lot - it's worldwide (in fact started in the USA).

Basically you put a post on and say what you've got, someone sees the post and
says 'yes please can I have it'. You then arrange a date and time for them to
collect whatever the item is ("it'll be next to the green trash can on the
drive" etc) and they show up and collect it from you.

This way, unwanted items can have a chance at going to a good home.

The cost is nothing for you, and the collector simply shows up to collect.

Clearly this only works for relatively local community so the web site is
sectioned into areas and localities.

We have found it brilliant at having things removed and you hardly lift a
finger as someone collects. Freecyclers are always friendly people because they
believe in the cause. In fact I need a couple of pallets (skids) and searched
on Freecycle and found some right away about 10 miles from me - I'm picking
them up Wednesday. What's not to like!
