They aren't intended for people such as those here. Ask Jostein to ask his
wife and daughter what they think of it. Actually, he will have to ask his

No way of really knowing but I would happily bet that there is a bigger market

Sorry, John.
I never intended to take you seriously. Apologies for launching you
into an argument where you thought I did. And speaking of missing
points, I think you refused to consider mine.

More seriously, though, if you cling to a 20 year old Z-1p as your
ideal camera, I do not understand why you don't go buy yourself a 2nd
hand FA* 300/2.8. They are mighty good lenses by any measurement, they
are optimised for film use instead of this newfangled digital stuff,
and pop up on eBay more than once a year.

If Pentax's future lies with those of us on this list (and the like)
then the company is already doomed.

Canon may have nice gear at the high end, but the company profit
comes from selling a boatload of Rebel GTI turbo XLs (or whatever

Both lines with a full range of available lenses, from Ultra-wide zooms

Not to mention, both lines still support FILM with cameras and lenses.

And what do we get from Pentax?

In-body IS and the ability to use a huge range of older lenses!

From my point of view, and in my price and application range,
Pentax or Four Thirds are the obvious choices. Maybe Sony,
I haven't really looked. C and N aren't in the running.

Even with more money and harder requirements, it is not
clear C and N are the only choices.

Olympus have a 4/3 lens that is 14-35 mm (28-70 equivalent)
at F2.0. Where does your full range of available lenses have
something to match that? Their 7-14 is reportedly superb as
well.

Sorry, but that kind of rant makes me think your real issue may be
located somewhere else than between motif and memory card.

another one.

traditionalist when it comes to colour.

2008/12/18 John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com:
 From: AlunFoto

I still think the look of this particular camera sucks.

 It's not the look that I find unappealing. A white K10D or K20D wouldn't
bother me, although the color of the body wouldn't be a factor either way in
 a purchase decision.

The bottom line for me is does the camera give me the tools I want to take
the kind of photographs I want to take. The K2000 does NOT. And making a
white version is just lipstick on a pig.

From Nikon we get the D3, D3x, and D700
From Canon we get EOS 5D, EOS 50D, ... even the EOS Rebels

Both lines with a full range of available lenses, from Ultra-wide zooms
through wide, normal, telephoto and super telephoto.

Not to mention, both lines still support FILM with cameras and lenses.

And what do we get from Pentax? Auto Picture Action, Kids, Pet, Stage
Lighting, and Night Snap modes, ... COMING SOON in white with a Dedicated
 help button.

Don't get me started on Pentax lenses.

I think Hoya was only interested in the Pentax's medical imaging division,
but for public relations purposes had to pay lip service to continuing the
 Pentax camera division.

But the sooner they can drive it into the ground with this kind of crap, the
sooner they can close it down and be shut of it.

Re: White K2000 pics

Jostein, I agree with you 100% about tools. That said, a relationship that
started (my personal case) 32 years ago may be better uderstood if we avoid the
word tool.

The moment I needed a different tool, I bought it. The moment I no longer
needed the tool, I sold it. Some of the tools came from Canon (FD series, 2
cameras + 4 lenses), some from Nikon, Ricoh, others were rather large
(Sinar+Schneiders), some medium sized (first a Pentax 67+ Takumars, later
Hasselblad + Zeiss), one is waterproof (Nikon, still with me, tool all the same
).

My Pentax gear remains mostly with me - sold some to buy tools, but most
remains with me. Guess that would not describe the surviving as tools. I did
sell some Pentax gear - maybe those were in the tool range?

Km - 1976 ~ 1983 maybe a tool, sold when needed, not exactly missed
K2 - 1981~1985 - tool, rather good one
LX - since 1981 - not a tool, hope it will be restored again someday
Zx5 - 1997 ~ 2001 - tool, despite good looking and superb in ergonomics
Mx - since 2008 - not tools (2 of them, one to be restored next year)
Pz1p - since 2008 - not so sure yet... ask me again in 2~3 years

Luiz Felipe
luiz.felipe at techmit.com.br

ps: I like black and chromed cameras myself - would consider a subdued silver/
medium grey as well. White, only as a tool - part of a deep snow shooting gear,
maybe.

I understand the white K2000 is a marketing gimmick. I don't think
marketing gimmicks are what Pentax needs to remain competitive.

I want Pentax to offer the tools I want and need.

I'm satisfied with my K10D (for now), and will eventually move up to a
K20D, relegating the K10D to backup - if they don't come out with a K30D
before I can justify the expense of the upgrade.

And I don't care if the body is white or black or purple or red, white
blue with yellow fringe, as long as it lets me do the job I want to do.

Heck, I'm still happily using my K1000, LX and PZ-1P. I even shoot with
the *ist-D sometimes.

Pentax's lens road map OTOH just don't take me where I need to go. It
ain't even on the same continent. But for now I can still find third
party lenses that do give me what I want.

I don't want to switch brands, but if Pentax continues on the course
they're presently on, I may not have a choice.

If it does turn out that way, I ain't going quietly.

Why is liking a different color stupid? I don't get it. Many times

Personally, I don't care what color they make it.

I didn't see anything in the K2000 to make me want to buy one. It's one
of those automatic everything picture taking cameras ... it don't need
my input, so I don't need it.

Changing the color didn't change that.

Re: White K2000 pics

2008-12-18 Thread Stan Halpin
I agree, not really much to fuss about. Before my time (i.e., before
I realized that cameras were anything more than a box to hold film,
shutter mechanism, and lens mount), I understand that Pentax
introduced versions of the Spotmatic where they, for example, put an
internal stop on the shutter speed dial so it would only move to
1/500 rather than 1/1000. A slight cosmetic change to the speed dial
on the body and, hey presto, a new less expensive camera model. Or a
super version of one model, where the only substantive difference
was the focusing screen. Pentax has a long and successful history of
such minor changes as a way of creating new market niches. And didn't
the quoted interview with a Hoya big-shot recently tell us that they
would be doing more of this?

As to the white body, I would prefer maroon, but maybe next month...
As long as there are people like Cesar who will skin their LX,
there will be people who will be attracted to something other than a
plain-vanilla black camera body. Tastes vary. Some people even prefer
Canons!?! In my own case I paid an extra arm and leg to order my
Limited lenses direct from Japan because I wanted black to match the
black camera body, and black Ltd lenses weren't being imported here
at the time. No functional difference, purely cosmetic preference...

It's not the look that I find unappealing. A white K10D or K20D

either way in a purchase decision.

The bottom line for me is does the camera give me the tools I want to
take the kind of photographs I want to take. The K2000 does NOT. And
making a white version is just lipstick on a pig.

COMING SOON in white with a
Dedicated help button.

Don't get me started on Pentax lenses.

I think Hoya was only interested in the Pentax's medical imaging
division, but for public relations purposes had to pay lip service to
continuing the Pentax camera division.

again. It seems that Iomega replaces a number of dll's, (.sys files but
they're dll's none the less), with older versions. It looks like it BSOD's on
a loopback that is supposedly fixed by Win2K service pack 4. Because SP4 is
installed, it doesn't seem to want to reinstall, and it won't uninstall,
because the dll's have been changed. I have to narrow down the list of files
that have been replaced and get good copies of them. In the meantime I'm using
this crappy web interface.

Have you tried to uninstall the drivers, and let the machine

that may fix it...

internal stop on the shutter speed dial so it would only move to
1/500 rather than 1/1000.

Nau, a way cheaper solution than that. They just took the 1/1000 off the
shutter speed dial. It still had the click stop and you could still set it.

A white K10D or K20D

factor either way in a purchase decision.

The bottom line for me is does the camera give me the tools I want

And making a white version is just lipstick on a pig.

From Nikon we get the D3, D3x, and D700
From Canon we get EOS 5D, EOS 50D, ... even the EOS Rebels

Both lines with a full range of available lenses, from Ultra-wide

Not to mention, both lines still support FILM with cameras and lenses.

And what do we get from Pentax? Auto Picture Action, Kids, Pet,
Stage Lighting, and Night Snap modes, ... COMING SOON in white with
a Dedicated help button.

Don't get me started on Pentax lenses.

I think Hoya was only interested in the Pentax's medical imaging

Sorry Marnie, but I think you are a few months older than the usual
target segment for this white DSRL :-)

You and I like discretion yes. But the younger generation definitely
don't. In fact most of them have the quite opposite approach to life.
They will grab anything, that makes them think it will make them stand
out in the crowd.
That goes for the youngsters, but also for their parents. Look at the
moms clothes, they dress exactly the same as their kids, with visible
bellies and all that.

RE: White K2000 pics

2008-12-17 Thread John Celio
Cough, women aren't quite that stupid.
So basically this is a stupid move on
 Pentax's part.

It's not a matter of stupid or otherwise. Women tend to be more
interested in colorful or bright cameras and accessories than men. I
know this from two sources. First was the market research I used to be
privvy to back at Reed's, and second was actual experience selling to
people there. In my sales experience, women were far more interested in
brightly-colored cameras and accessories than their male counterparts,
sometimes to the men's chagrin. It was rare to find a woman who
insisted on a black camera, whereas men frequently insisted everything
be black. If I had a pile of small camera cases in various colors, for
instance, a female customer would pick whatever color suited her, while
a male customer would dig around for a black or darkly colored case. It
was not rare for a woman to want her purchase to match her purse.

The white K2000 is targeted at the biggest segment of the photography
market: casual snapshooting women, particularly moms. These people
don't care about being incospicuous or looking professional like us
serious hobbyists and pros sometimes do. They want convenience and
style. The white K2000 is very small and it looks different from every
other dSLR on the market. This is enough to help Pentax make a lot more
sales with minimal effort.

This camera is not a stupid move, but rather a very smart move for a
company that needs to expand its market share. I forsee more color
variations down the line, and eventually more dSLRs from other companies
will follow suit. You and I won't buy them, but a lot of other people
will.

Some wise guy gets an idea one late evening. The next day he tells
