Re: To print or buy ?

Thanks. Yes I will hunt some down maybe from Red River as Paul S
mentions in another reply. I was referring to larger prints on sheets of
aluminum. They are pricey but come with a hanger and require no other
framing, mitigating cost somewhat. With the right subject and lighting
they can be quite attractive.

Don,

Just in case: you can print on metallic paper with your Epson printer.
I've used a few different papers, - but most recently I tried this one
by Epson and liked it:

I had to take the last train out of New Haven CT a couple of nights ago,
and decided to make a photographic virtue out of necessity.

It seems that Con Rail is now using old New York New Haven and Hartford
Diesels, well at least engines painted to resemble them on their fully
electrified line...

Here's a detail from an engine that wouldn't have been out of place
running on this line in the mid 60's when the NY, NH & H was still an
independent Railroad.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20newhaven.html.

Then there are the car interiors which while pretty modern looking have
a decidedly "down at the heels" look and feel about them.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20lasttrain.html

I rendered both to look like classic Tri-X, {"Last Train", with a Green
Filter), mostly to to reflect that bygone era, which isn't so bygone now
that I think about it.

Equipment: Pentax K-5II w/smc Pentax FA 43mm Limited.

As usual, comments are welcome, but may be totally ignored.

Re: OT: Adobe "mobile apps and services" with CC Photo plan

2015-12-03 Thread Donald Guthrie
The Tablet aps are useful for some. For example when traveling you can
look at a collection of photos select winners and even make adjustments
to the photos which will be reflected the next time you open LR. The
feature I am starting to use is the free unlimited online gallery. My
last GESO to PDML was a link to my online Adobe cloud. You have complete
control of which photos are public. You can set it up so that viewers to
your site can select photos (to print for example) or even make
comments. This seems to me to be very valuable to Wedding or event
photographers. All this is done by flipping a switch on any collections
you have created. Which can be flipped off and the photos disappear
from the site but not you catalog. Pretty good for free.

Technical details aside, I've seen several similar images recently with
more or less snow, all captioned "How to recognize a Canadian." Iowa
apparently doesn't have a monopoly on that kind of behavior.

Thanks Don.

Actually with the camera/lens set up and ready to go, its not much of a
hassle to shoot birds when you have several feeders in the area - just a
matter of being alert to when they're there and shooting. My shooting
location is from the room with a TV, so I'm not outside in the cold and am
able to other things while I wait for the birds to appear.

Looking for alternatives to insects I visited the only Rock Shop in the

a fossil of a chambered shell:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/ammonite

or on flickr:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/markcassino/23060581214

16 stacked images at about 1.5x lifesizxed. K01 plus A*200 macro plus
extension. I used the working room from the longer lens to setup the
flash to shine directly onto the fossil to reveal as much as possible in
the layers beneath the surface.

Re: Geso: photos taken with Pentax mount glass on full frame, camera

Thanks for the looking, Mark C. I tend to agree so far with your
projected use of FF vs APSC. I do not have a FF macro or even long tele
to do any close-up work. Birding might be great with a FF Pentax &
Paul's new lens, & futile with the Sony A7. In passing, Leica has a new
mirror-less "sports" camera at their usual pricing. It offers one lens-
a 28-90 for sports???

Nice collection of images, Don. I really like the first set - the snowy
scenes.

In many ways I like the effect of the crop factor but will be interested
in seeing how the FF works. I wonder if APS-C will still be the way to
go for macros and telephoto work, while full frame would have the
advantage with landscapes and general shooting. In any case, it's good
to see that the old FF pentax glass seems to hold up well.

Re:Re: Geso: photos taken with Pentax mount glass on full frame, camera

2015-12-31 Thread Donald Guthrie
Bob, Thanks for taking time to look at the photos & thanks for your
generous remarks on my photography. Oh I did shoot film, slides mostly
and developed and printed my own. I was shooting a Ricoh with pentax
mount lenses because I could not afford the real thing. 90% with that
Sears branded 50mm and & 10% with cheap telephoto. No wide angle. My
1st real digital was Pentax 200D.

This little experiment was to see which lenses would carry over to
Pentax FF and if not, it does not bode well for the success of Pentax
FF. If as you say (I I do not dispute) the buyer needs to buy new higher
quality and higher priced glass the why go Pentax? Just go Canikon!
Unless the Pentax is so inexpensive it lessens the blow of new lenses.

Sony has the merit of smaller sized cameras for FF. But it turns out
that fast FF lenses are rather large. The A7 & a 35mm lens weighs 3 lbs
and ain't pocketable. Advantage Olympus for size & weight. back to
Canikon for lens selection.

If I were to go Sony their 35mm ($1500) and 50mm ($1000) are among the
sharpest lenses ever tested. Money no object it is still a big
commitment. Many people on the web are raving about using Leica glass on
the A7 but we all know those are pricy too. And all adapted lenses are
manual exposure & focus. Except for Canon lenses which work as native on
Sony with a $3000 dollar adapter. I would keep Pentax cameras & some
lenses for sports, birds, if nothing else for the reach of the teles. &
my K01 with a pancake or even the 18-135 is a fun kit for the casual
walkabout.

Thanks again for giving me all this food for thought.

I guess from that that you've only ever shot digital!

They're nice photos, well composed and well lit.

When I moved from film to digital I had a very high quality Contax / Zeiss film
kit. Using the lenses with an adapter on Olympus 4/3rds gear I noticed very
significant purple fringing with some of the lenses, which meant they were
effectively useless for digital, so I sold all the Contax / Zeiss stuff.

So the first thing I looked for on your shots was purple fringing because I
think (could be wrong) that it results from the different alignment of pixels
and film wrt the light path, and subsequent interference between pixels. I
didn't notice any in the shots of yours that I looked at. What I did notice is
that at full magnification your shots are softer than the quality of your
photography deserves. You don't say specifically which models of lenses you
use, but I suspect the softness is in the glass, not including the fullness of
the frame.

You should try and get hold of two or three equivalent focal length Sony lenses
and shoot comparisons with your lenses under controlled conditions, as best you
can.

Your pictures deserve better lenses. Go for quality rather than quantity.

Some splendid shots there. Can they really get that much better? The old
glass can still do OK for most people. Several of the shots in the
greenhouse look like parts of my garden, butterflies & all (but different
species). Of course, the "wideness" or "shortness" of the lenses is just a
perception - a 28mm is still a 28mmm - we have just become trapped in APSC
crop factor mode.

VERY interesting, Don. Thanks for sharing.

It seems to me that those boats are canoes, and that they are paddled,
like the outrigger canoes we use in Maui, rather than being rowed,
like the shells in my images from Dartmouth. The two forms of
propulsion look very similar from shore, but are actually quite
different. Especially with the sliding seats used on racing shells,
rowing gets most of its power from leg and back muscles, while
paddling is all upper body work.

Re: PESO - 'Bird of Chrome'

Ken, I don't think the background is too awful. The lighter colored part
is almost elegant. I did think the black box could be minimized by
cropping tighter on top. I know it crowds the wingtips but it does turn
the black box into smaller black strip which echo the lower part of the
photo. BTW I too like to photo hood ornaments at car shows so enjoyed
seeing this one from you.

Lovely model, great concept.

I'm afraid to say that I think that the shadows might have one this
round. A lot of the shadows are a bit too hard edged for my taste. The
one on the wall behind her when she's standing, in particular.
http://41.media.tumblr.com/d0fe27a5a86a32e02be579ea4a80ea77/tumblr_o2m9gs90O01rdwvm9o2_1280.jpg

In a couple others, the ones on her neck and/or shoulder. Mind you, I'm
not saying that I could do better, but I find as a theme those shadows
distract my attention from other, more pleasing aspects of the photos.
In general, they are the shadows from the light on camera left, fairly high

I nearly really like the one with her back to the camera:
http://41.media.tumblr.com/318fa3967584e9f2dbf8e7f3021e77e3/tumblr_o2m9gs90O01rdwvm9o3_1280.jpg

but the light seems to flatten out her figure rather than define her
lovely curves. The right leg and arm are nice, but I think there is too
much fill on her hips and butt.

Interesting Dan, It was quite small on my monitor. In fact I magnified
it to fill my screen and I think I would crop it tighter than presented.
Cropping tighter off the top loosing some sky really emphasized the
trees & reflection as the subject & the foreground made feel like I was
about to step into the water. I know that wasn't your problem it was too
big on your screen I gather.

Nice image.

As it first appears on my desktop monitor, the image is WAY too large.
It is difficult to appreciate at that size.

Yes, I know how to zoom out, but ideally that should not be necessary
when visiting a photographic website.

witht he building in the back:-)

as to the "ask ann" about the flowers, I only learned what they were
because one of Don's friends on facebook knew..
Scilla is what they are called

The stone steps leading down and away work really well too...

After Rick W's great image showing how beautiful Forsythia can be
(Tree Hugger PESO), I decided I had to try again to get a decent shot
of mine. It is not as effective as Rick's, but probably the best I
have been able to get of this very difficult shrub to capture:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18216587
K-5 IIs, FA 100 mm Macro F2.9
Comments are invited and appreciated.

I planted this particulat specimen two years ago. Last year it was
rather weak, but it is coming along much better now. I hope that it
will be much showier next year.

This has been a tough year for photographing flowers in my yard. The
past 4 weeks have seen freezing weather, heavy rain, snow flurries and
haigh winds. The blossoms on my Magnolias withered in a few days, and
turned brown and limp very quickly. The winds tood a lot of the
flowers from my forsythia that were more out in the open. Even the
daffodils and hyacinths have suffered from the poor weather, and are
not up to the standards of the past few years.

Oh, well, that is what one should expect in the Northeast US, I guess.

I played with my camera on the way home from the dojo a few nights ago.
I mostly determined that I need to find some sharp, fast, wide glass,
preferably one that I can afford. The 31 was neither fast, nor wide,
enough for the shot that I wanted to get of trees sticking up through
the fog.

This shot with the 8mm Samyang has been getting some attention on
flickr, and it does lend to some interesting geometry.
