[servman] Missing EC Registry key

2014-12-31 Thread Mears, Mark
Doug,

Thanks for responding to my previous posts concerning the Exchange Connector.
I have another question if you don't mind. There is no registry key as
indicated in the documentation either.

To disable this, you can modify the registry by navigating to the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\System Center Service Manager Exchange
Connector node and selecting the AllowAdditionOfNonSMUsers key and then
setting to value to 1.

I looked there as well as in the Wow6432Node key as well but neither of them
have a System Center Service Manager Exchange Connector node. Are they
referencing some detail that failed to install and there is a problem with my
installation or is this another example of the bad technical writing again?

Thanks,

Mark A. Mears, Sr.

Mark,

  Poor technical writing.

  "Run the setup file"

should read

"Run the Setup file named "
System_Center_Service_Manager_Connector_3.1_for_Exchange.exe"

Once extracted (to folder C:\System Center Service Manager Connector 3.1 for
Exchange\en-us or wherever you extracted it) continue to follow the documents
instructions to set up the connector.

Doug

I have downloaded and extracted the Exchange Connector 3.1 and directed it to
place the files in the default location per the install steps in the deployment
document. However, there is a reference to a Setup.exe file that does not
exist. There is also reference to after this has been run/installed. Below is
an excerpt of the installation steps:

Install Steps

1. Run the Setup file. (file does not exist!)

2. After you've installed the Exchange Connector (how to do this when the
file doesn't exist?)

The only executable file is the extractor that does nothing more than extract
the management pack bundle and a couple of DLLs. I need clarification that
either this is a documentation bug and nothing needs to be installed or I am
missing the executable file which I need to install the product.

[servman] RE: Change account password

2014-12-17 Thread Mears, Mark
Unfortunately that won't work in this particular instance. The SCSM Service
account is restricted from logging on locally and is the account that should be
used for the DW registration. I fail to understand why a local logon is
necessary when it has logon as a service rights. Additionally all of the
connectors have corresponding service accounts with the same restrictions. So
in this environment, SCSM is totally useless.

Hi Mark,

If I'm reading this right, you want to update the service account used to
register the DW with SCSM. That can only be done by unregistering the DW and
then registering with the new service account (Travis, please confirm). I've
done this a few hundred times troubleshooting cubes, but here's the link to
MS's instructions, in case you need them:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh519811.aspx

If you click the Administration wonder bar, then click Administration in the
pane, you'll see the area to complete the process. You'll use the new service
account when reregistering.

Doug

[servman] Unable to register data warehouse

2014-12-10 Thread Mears, Mark
I'm unable to get the Data Warehouse registration wizard to return success
after several attempts. I continue to get the same error each time:
[cid:image001.png@01D014A4.AE565570]

Steps I have taken to troubleshoot/fix the issue:

1. I have verified the user account and password and they are both valid
and account is unlocked

2. Created a new secure connection account using the Service account and
password

3. Added the account to allow it to log on locally as well as log on as a
service

4. Account is a local admin directly added to both the MS as well as the
DW

5. I have researched in TechNet, forums and Google searches to no avail

Environment:
Windows Server 2008 R2, fully patched
SQL Server 2008 on separate box with two named instances (SCSM and SCSMDW)
SCSM 2012 R2 with no UR added

Any assistance would be appreciated.

You can't use a hosted SharePoint site, but if you have SharePoint running on a
VM in Azure this would be possible. Here is the TechNet article

Self-service Portal.

You may want to take a look at the portal that Cireson has developed as an

RE: [servman] SCSM Console

2014-04-21 Thread Mears, Mark
It might depend on the number of people that are using or are planning to be
using the console. If you only have a very few (under 5) you could get by with
a single console. If you have or are planning to have more console connections
than that then you might want to consider an additional Management Server that
can be used to handle the connections.

Alternatively, Cireson makes a web-based console based on http that is an
excellent choice for larger numbers of client connections. You can check out
all of their SCSM add-on products here<http://www.cireson.com/app-store/>.

Nice to know guys, this will help me a lot.
Based on your experience, what is the most common scenario in companies using
SCSM console?

Since the console is installed by default on the Management Server, having an
additional console gives another benefit. The Management Server can be
leveraged to place all of the Management Packs and zero connections, while the
additional console can be used for all of the connections. Having the console
on the alternate server reduces the load on the Management Server thus leaving
more resources to the Management Server for running workflows, etc.

On the downside , sometimes these two servers fall out of sync and then the
Management Health Service requires a restart on both. That is not a frequent
occurrence however.

It places the console closer to the server in a distributed environment too.

Citrix XenApp uses RDS in the background. It just gives some enhanced features.

Pro’s:
You only install the console in one place (the XenApp or RDS servers)

Con’s
You need a lot of memory assigned to those, since the console uses a lot.
