Re: Goodbyes (was this is the end...)

2016-03-29 Thread Mirko Jankovic
Hey guys,

Couple weeks ago I shared trello board for people to create their short
cards with contact info and portfolio.
As mentioned it was getting harder to find Softimage people this was fast
simple way to go and see fast who is available.

As trello was temporary solution and after some work new page is ready.
It is a bit extended edition of course but still offers same fast search
into freelance data base.
Go in find who do you need and contact. The rest is all up to you.
But without freelancers that has no meaning at all ofc so I will use this
post as invite for guys to come check and join.
And also anyone that is looking for help on project, and don;t have time
nor will to post on job boards, wait a week or two for posts, then spend
another week or two going over all applications...
Here is fast and simple way to filter out freelancers find exactly who you
need and get in contact as fast as possible.

So anyone is interested check out new http://www.cgfolio.com/

Always happy to receive critics and ideas for updates and improvements on
the page as after all it is ther eto help all of us in those deadline over
the head days... and nights :)
Hope it will help people to get contact for jobs and help others looking
for help to find right guys for the task at hand.

Cheers!
Mirko

I echo many of the thank you's expressed here. Without the expertise of
this list I would have never completed many of the jobs I have encountered
in my career. I especially cherish the times getting to meet many of you at
Matt's dinners at SIGGRAPH. Those are some of the best times in my career.
I know you all will go onto success in whatever direction you head.
Softie's are a special breed and not to be underestimated! I don't get a
chance to crack open Softimage much anymore and 3D just isn't the same.

Godspeed all.

2016-02-25 Thread John Payne
Just checked the list after a hiatus. A big thanks and round of applause
to Mr Gabe, Eric Mootz, Guillame, Anto Matkovic, Jonah Friedman, Thiago,
Helge Mathee,
Eric Thivierge, Nika Ragua, Stephen Blair, Alan Fregtman, Andy Moorer,
Fabricio Chamon, Julian Johnson, Ciaran Moloney, Todd Akita, Paul Smith
and all the other folks who have posted tutorials, answered a question on
the list, created ICE compounds, shaders, addons and plugins or
administered a web site.
I know I've left out some names here so please forgive me.
I've had the pleasure of working with some of you in NYC and wanted to say
that all the extra time you guys put into this work, most of it unpaid and
on top of the
punishing hours this industry demands, is appreciated by me and I'm sure
everyone on the list.
I could not have accomplished most of the shots on my reel without your
efforts and It's allowed me to get home (sometimes) at a decent hour to see
my family.

Cheers!

Totally agree with Adrian. It's not 1998... 2005... or even 2010 any more.
Turn around is very fast now, for industry projects. Very fast.

In 2010 I worked up the nerve to jump ship and head out on my own as a
freelancer. At that time I had been using Maya for 4 years at a game studio;
before that I was using Max. I had not touched Softimage in at least 5 years,
I was most familiar with Maya at the time. But when I jumped, I switched to SI
because I knew I had to compete in a very competitive environment. SI was (and
is) a production tool a single user and small group can use to get a job done
from concept to completion out of the box (well... with the purchase of a
Redshift license). AD no longer offers a product that fills that niche.

still using soft, still lurking (and
posting occasionally!!)

our problem is a double edged one;

more people moving to other software, and
no new blood, means less available freelancers (yes i got your mails, will be
in touch when stuff shows up!)

but more importantly, having spoken to a
few seasoned maya vets, we simply CANNOT do the kind of low end TV 3D graphics
we currently can with maya

we often only have a day or two to do a
shot for a tv doc, think about that for a minute, that's often modelling,
light, rig, render and a couple of hours for comp

budgets are only getting smaller, so the
time allowed for a sequence goes down, but no app (other than soft) that i am
aware of enables this kind of fast turn around

and before anyone points out that low end
tv work is a niche circumstance, this will spread, i know commercials budgets
aren't what they were either

bottom line, as an industry, up against
shrinking budgets/deadlines, we simply can't use an app that throws up road
blocks to your workflow every 3 clicks of the mouse

/end rant

Re: Goodbyes (was this is the end...)

2016-02-05 Thread Mirko Jankovic
problem with learning maya, or re-learning for those that used and went to
si never to look again, is that if you learned maya first then you "learn"
that is is normal to run into daily issues and then spend hours going
around them. not knowing how it is done better makes it"easier": " to live
with Maya.
But after working in Softimage yit is simply really really ahrd to push
yourself to do anything in Maya when you know so much easier and better way

I confess I still look and participate, still use Softimage now at Glassworks
and keep loving it but I also must confess I prefer Houdini for some tasks not
related to FX.

I wish Maya was up to speed with Softimage but it is not so it will have to
wait.

Re: Goodbyes (was this is the end...)

2016-02-05 Thread Cristobal Infante
Some other mailing list send automated monthly reminders to help clean.
I guess you could just delete emails that bounce and help passive users
unsubscribe

They look like this, and I believe it's a default one:

This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your #

mailing list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how
to use it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

etc..

RE: Goodbyes (was this is the end...)

2016-02-05 Thread adrian wyer
still using soft, still lurking (and posting occasionally!!)

our problem is a double edged one;

more people moving to other software, and no new blood, means less available
freelancers (yes i got your mails, will be in touch when stuff shows up!)

but more importantly, having spoken to a few seasoned maya vets, we simply
CANNOT do the kind of low end TV 3D graphics we currently can with maya

we often only have a day or two to do a shot for a tv doc, think about that
for a minute, that's often modelling, light, rig, render and a couple of
hours for comp

budgets are only getting smaller, so the time allowed for a sequence goes
down, but no app (other than soft) that i am aware of enables this kind of
fast turn around

and before anyone points out that low end tv work is a niche circumstance,
this will spread, i know commercials budgets aren't what they were
either

bottom line, as an industry, up against shrinking budgets/deadlines, we
simply can't use an app that throws up road blocks to your workflow every 3
clicks of the mouse

/end rant

I'm not aware of the list being at risk of going away, however nothing can last
forever. I cannot help you with moving the users elsewhere, the list of
subscribers is protected by the customer data privacy policy. I haven't blocked
people plugging their houdini things, I won't block anyone plugging their
alternate mailing list as long as it's not annoying spam.

And to add to that, si-community is more or less the one place on the
web to go for us Softies.
It has become a little bit more quiet after the EOL, but is still there
and active.

So, in addition to a possible new email list somewhere sometime, I would
suggest to create an account at the forum.
There's a dedicated corner for jobs, news, work done with Soft and a lot
of us visit the forum at least once a day.

In addition to earlier praises, this list has some of the most generous
people in 'software land' I encountered in my 3d years.
From Ed's website that helped me out in the early years of XSI, to the
video's of people like Brad, Paul, Adam, Chris, and tips and tricks from
other peeps on this listtoo many to mention, there is always a friendly
answer, tip or example scene to share. I hope this will go on for as
long as possible.

I have learned from my time with the si-community that important decisions such
as banning someone shouldn't be taken by one person alone.
The si-community has a rule that any temporary or permanent ban must be agreed
upon by at least two moderators.
That said, IIRC, we only once had an incident that seemed to warrant a
temporary ban.
Genuine spammers, however, get kicked out without such discretion...

At least their situation was perhaps somewhat less difficult (not

  Resolve/Fusion combo, the (pricey & now rental-only)

So perhaps similarly at some point on the 3D side, existing or

closer to the main aspects of what could describe "the XSI

(being able to 'take-it'), -proceduralism-, good overall
performance & creation speed, versatility (everything working
with everything), and ease of -advanced- use (for technical
-artists-),  hopefully happening within the next decade.

For the first time, I am concerned that the list might disappear once and

We've had a pretty good run. For me, I remember starting on the original
si3d list with many of you original si adopters. There were so many
heavyweights on the list, i drank in all of the information being shared
for months before i felt knowledgeable enough to post something
intelligent. That was back when Beckman hosted the si archives. Then there
was the infamous discussion list in the days where Porl and Kim led the
Fnar'ing, Christine posted her cartoons, and Ed was the cheesemeister. Many
of you on this list have been some of my best mentors, advisors and
friends, and have felt like a part of my extended family for nearly 20
years. Like I said to start this post, it's been a pretty good run.

I think my life would be very different if it wasn't for people like Mr

@Stephan - While I do not think this group will need a lot of moderation, there
will have to be some system in place to exclude people who violate some basic

Most of us will definitely stay in the business (or hobby) and some of us will
still using at some degree Softimage for years so I don't see why this list
should disappear any time soon.

In the event the list suddenly disappears with all this EOL talk, I thought I'd
offer a well deserved and long overdue thanks to everyone in the community for
everything they've done over the years. It was the original si3d list that
provided me the opportunity I needed for my very first break into high end all
those years ago. And it's been the XSI community and this list that helped put
a roof over my head, feed my family, and keep me functionally sane since then.

Best wishes to everyone in their future ventures.

Now now.. the list is highly unlikely to go anywhere.

I can also recall such goodbyes from before, and like before I hope it's
not really goodbye ;-)
