Thanks a lot Jernej! But before changing the volume ID, I'd like to
know the existing one. Where can I find it? I tried and searched on
Win XP and on Kanotix, but to no avail.

[3.81.13/.14] Maintenance Centre Backup errors

2006-08-13 Thread Tony Brookes
Hello TBBETA,

I am having trouble using the Backup tool in TB.

I back up my personal mail about 1/month as its not critical. This
month, however, I am getting an error when running it.

The backup hangs when writing to disk and doesn't matter which accounts
I try to backup (2 pop plus local folders). I have to click cancel
and get a dialog with the following error...

'Thread Error - access is denied (5)'

The only thing that has changed since last month is I have changed
from a single core Athlon x64 to a dual core x64. The PC is running
  fine in all other respects.

  Anyone any ideas?

dualCPUing your comp, AFAIR, needs an OS reinstall, as it requires a
different kernel. it's possible, though, that choosing repair at
install time will suffice.

otherwise it can lead to serious data disaster on the disk volumes in
the long run.

it would have been better if you'd asked MSFT *prior* to the upgrade.

there are chances, though very little, that the installer has
*already* installed the correct kernel, as the possibility to add a
second CPU *may* (though not in all cases) be detected without having
them both installed at that time. but i still bet 80:20 that they
DIDN'T identify your platform as upgradable to dual CPU.

and the same story applies to hyperthread. do NOT disable HT when you
do a first-time Windows installation. or else, a story might appear on
slashdot, claiming HT is broken+braindead+hackprone. then it appears
reprinted and translated on a zillion other sites... :)

Not it doesn't. You can update the kernel. I did that procedure
already.

No problem so far, and I'm running a dual core for about 6 months on a

I've read here about some problems with the backup procedure with beta

I don't think that's possible at all. AFAIK you'll have to upgrade the
CPU (Device Manager -System) to get a new HAL that supports
multi-core cpus.

I don't know about HT but switching froma AMDx64 to a AMDX2 64 was a
breeze.

POP connections lock

2006-08-13 Thread Matt Thoene
Here's an annoying one. It started about 3 or 4 betas ago and has yet to
be repaired in subsequent betas. Approximately 6 - 10 times a day, one
of my POP accounts will connect to get mail and then just hang on a
message. Usually it's some sort of spam e-mail but nevertheless, it halts
all other incoming mail for the specific POP account. Other POP accounts
continue to work ok.

The only fix is to kill it in Task Manager and restart. Sometimes it
will repeat and hang again. If it continues, I am forced to connect to
my mail server through the web or using Thunderbird to delete the bad
e-mail.

Attached is an example. This particular e-mail is not spam.
