[Bug 1244635] Re: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host
I also don't feel that this is a high priority bug since, so far, we do not recommend allowing unprivileged users to use containers. Agreed. Especially because (currently) it's fairly easy to escape from LXC when you have root access to the container. I don't believe it would be a serious loss of functionality to chmod 0700 /var/lib/lxc. ... So I think a regular update in trusty with SRUs to all previous releases is ok. I've used this functionality many times in the past. While I can do without it in exchange for security, some people may have written scripts that depend on this functionality, hence a SRU would be nasty for them. My personal opinion is: LXC is insecure and it does not deserve potentially dangerous security updates in stable releases. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244635 Title: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1244635/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1244635] Re: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host
For those users, getting back to the old way would be a chmod away and I asked Serge to make sure permissions would only be changed once and not with every update, so it should be a one time thing. As for security, while we don't currently say LXC is secure on Ubuntu, we're not aware of any way to escape a default container (Ubuntu on Ubuntu) starting with 12.04 when running with all default settings (specifically, under apparmor). If you know of a way to do so, I'd love to hear about it so we can adapt our apparmor profile to prevent it.

Hi Stéphane, I can see at least three ways of escaping. The first is using LXC through libvirt. I see that there's an Apparmor profile for usr.bin.lxc-start, but AFAIK libvirt does not use lxc-start. Also, libvirt does not load the lxc-containers profile (AFAIK). This is proven by the fact that `cat /sys/kernel/security/apparmor/profiles` does not fail when done from within my LXC+libvirt guest. Also, reading /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/lxc/container-base I see that there are many deny rules, but you are missing at least two: /sys/kernel/uevent_helper and /sys/class/mem/null/uevent. See http://blog.bofh.it/debian/id_413 for a way for escaping using these two files. Finally, while there are rules that deny read and writes to /sys, but there are no rules that deny me to e.g. `mount -t sysfs sysfs /tmp/sys` or bind-mount /sys to an another location. (I'm not sure about this point because, you know, I'm using libvirt and I cannot test.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244635 Title: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1244635/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1244635] Re: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host
Good news. However I must say that the documentation on LXC does not say that libvirt is less secure than the official LXC: https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/serverguide/lxc.html#lxc-libvirt So either libvirt should ship with an Apparmor profile for LXC, or a warning should be added to the relevant places of the documentation -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244635 Title: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1244635/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1244881] [NEW] nvidia-319 black screen after upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10
Public bug reported: I was on Ubuntu 13.04, just changed from nvidia-current to nvidia-319 a few days ago. Today, I decided to upgrade to 13.10, after reboot, 1. The login screen was in low resolution. 2. Then right after login, an error dialog pop-up saying detected system problem, asking me whether to report the problem. 3. Further to proceed, then black screen with only mouse pointer freely to move. 4. Switched to command terminal tty1 (ctrl + alt + F1), logged in and used apt-get to remove nvidia-319 and re-install nvidia-current nvidia-settings. 5. Draw two shapes (such as rectangles) which are offset diagonally and join them with a connector, then drag the centre segment of the connector sideways to skew it - see the upper illustration in the attached file lo_skew_bug.png. 2. Save and close the file. 3. Re-open the file. The skew of the connector will be lost and the image will look like the lower illustration in the attached file. This is a regression from previous versions of LibreOffice. It appears that the skew is lost on loading the file, as the skew is still present if opening the file saved at step 2 above with OpenOffice Draw. This problem also affects drawings embedded in Writer documents, which exacerbates the effect as it can result in complex block diagrams being corrupted without the user noticing if they are not on a page the user is working on when the open and save the document. [Bug 1244889] [NEW] oclock ignores colors for hands when transparent
Public bug reported: [reproduced on Precise] [any versions of x11-apps have this bug] oclock -fg yellow -hour white -minute red -jewel blue -transparent makes hour-hand, minute-hand and jewel _red_ (the color only for minute-hand) although oclock -fg yellow -hour white -minute red -jewel blue (without -transparent) works fine. i.e. [expected] oclock -transparent -hour red paints its hour-hand red. [actual result] The hour-hand is not red. [cause] The code simplifies the routine too much when transparent, I guess. (though I'm not a programmer.) [Bug 1244635] Re: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host
-- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244635 Title: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lxc/+bug/1244635/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1244899] [NEW] the format, it does nothing!
Public bug reported: I recently bought a new USB thumb drive, and popped it in to my computer to LUKS it up. I clicked the little eject sigil next to its name in nautilus, and then right-clicked on its sidebar entry and chose format. I get asked all the relevant information, and I click format. Then I confirm. The rest is silence. I'm not sure why nothing happens, exactly, but I can't find any new icons on my unity dock thingy, can't find any mkfs processes running, and in fact basically the request to format seems to have actually been completely ignored. Same thing happens when I choose pure ext4 without the LUKS crypto. [Bug 1244903] [NEW] upgrade from 12.04 to 13.04 or 13.10
Public bug reported: After upgrading from 12.04 to 13.04 the system slowed down to snail pace. Press the mouse button on an icon and it would take up to 20 second to respond. System 32 bit with zeus 5500 graphics card and having two monitors. When a new app opened up or closes it does not do it smoothly but in jerks. I replaced 13.04 with 13.10 and the same problem. Replaced with 12.04 and it work fine. On the same system I am also running mint 15xfec an that works fine. Taking the graphics card out and using the on board video it goes somewhat faster but still not as when running 12.04. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Incomplete ** Tags: raring -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1244903 Title: upgrade from 12.04 to 13.04 or 13.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1244903/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hey Maik, Thanks for the hint! It did help and firefox is now visible. I didn't have the problem in 13.04.
