Burmese?

2006-09-28 Thread Lanny Quarles
I don't think its Mon at this point. there aren't any closed loops
on the rounded characters which about half the Mon char. have.

I've checked the Mon character set, and while similiar, I can't find
any truly matching chars.

It almost appears to be a Burmese rendering of the Khmer or Tham script.
It seems certain to be one of the Brahmi based scripts, but
there are so many possibilities, I really don't know.

On the Pali text website, the text they call Burmese doesnt
have the Mon 'e loops' either, but it isnt quite like yours as well.
there may be a Burmese Pali script or a Burmese version of Sanskrit
whose character set is harder to find.

With a syllabic language like this whose characters are more or less
interchangeable, I could imagine there might be some odd syncretic
hybrids that only an expert would be able to recognize. it may
not be anything like that at all, but I just couldnt see any matches
except for a few base characters.

very puzzling. maybe i just didnt look at it long enough.
I'll try printing these out maybe so i can turn them around
in different directions easier.

I'm not sure - it's definitely not Himilayan (or from that region) -
Burmese with some sort of diacritical marks seems most likely, since
Pali also used the script (or a variant, I think Mon) - Alan

morning announcement and sky poem

2006-09-28 Thread Allen Bramhall
it was that silvery streak at first. familiar to the earthly gods as
exhaust from a jet engine. that's the dynamo that obtains force by means
of exaggerated words, and with this force shrinks earth to habitable
size. it's a wonder and great. that streak, then, vested with the light
from the direct sun, glows silver, tho its nature really speaks of
water, steam and ice: /that/ alchemy. the glow is particular, tho not
rare. where this aeronautical express and the sun relate influences the
nature of that glow. a brief time, then the silver goes white and seems
less featured. still, that flight and conveyance occurs high, more than
17 feet high, more than 191 feet above me, even more than 1304.78 meters
away from earth itself and all the vertical pronouns ever imagined.
gosh, when we fall, we take forever. the clouds grab at us, the birds
flap for us, the jet engine screams a bloody lament (with textures of
great big noise, like you could change information). and then we too
become brilliantly, fit for sky and earth. it is crazy just holding that
stillness, as clouds inflate to vested interest and perhaps a war means
news again. surely, nothing can be more risky than ending all planes.
we'd have to bear the light ourselves, with clouds our only friends. we
can't do that, can we?

Celebrity Chef Promotes Foie Gras Cruelty

2006-09-28 Thread Alan Sondheim
Title: NO Foie Gras - A Farm Sanctuary Campaign

	Celebrity Chef Promotes
		Foie Gras Cruelty!
Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse continues to promote foie gras (pronounced 'fwah grah') in his
recipes, in his restaurants and on his television shows. In fact, The Food Network's The Essence of
Emeril show, which aired on September 26, 2006, was devoted entirely to foie gras!
	  What You Can Do!
Please express your disappointment with Emeril
		  continuing to promote foie gras.
Some points you may consider making:

Foie gras is the product of such extreme animal
cruelty that its production has been banned in more than a dozen nations, as well as in the state of California
and now in the City of Chicago.
It is no wonder that 80% of Americans, when educated about foie gras production, favor a ban. As a matter of
conscience, any future mention of foie gras on Emeril's television shows, The Essence of Emeril and
Emeril Live, should include these facts.
Ducks and geese on foie gras farms are forcibly fed
up to a third of their own body weight every day until their livers expand to 10 times their normal size, making
walking, standing and even breathing painful. Many ducks die from liver failure and related ailments. Foie gras
producers themselves admit that if the force feeding were to continue beyond a few weeks, 100% of the birds would
		die.
It is sadly ironic that in the face of vast hunger
around our globe, foie gras producers force-feed animals until the brink of death to produce an expensive
delicacy for the few who can afford it. Let Emeril and The Food Network know the stark irony of his foie gras
promotion, considering that his charity, The Emeril Lagasse Foundation, seeks to inspire, mentor and enable
all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances.
Encourage Emeril to reconsider his promotion of this
cruel and unnecessary product and stress that his fans will appreciate his talent and creativity even more if he
makes a stand to refrain from using ingredients that involve the torture of animals.
