I'm willing to poke around with the stuff, but I lack docs concerning
the chipset. As for the obvious things, I did patch Ben's kernel driver
to work with my setup, but the radeon driver in X is far more confusing
without documentation. I'll see what I can find out ... I would be
grateful for any tidbits of information you could send me...

[XFree86] Radeon 9200: can't get DVI working

2003-08-03 Thread Burkhard Leun
Hi,

XFree86 4.3.x detects the card (chip id 0x5961, see log)
and even the DFP on the primary port, but a signal is only
produced on the (not connected) secondary VGA port.

The hardware is working (tested with windows).

I'm using a newer driver version (4.3.99) with explicit
support for the card (I've also tried 4.3.0 with binary
driver from Schneider-Digital and got no signal at all).

Has anybody this card working with DVI? Any hints?

TIA,
  Burkhard

Re: [XFree86] XFree86 to Apple 17 Studio Display -- only blank screen

2003-08-03 Thread Sycholic

I would look to see of the Appple monitor is
looking for abnormal horz. and vert. sync. ? also post your /var/log file
for X that will help alot to get replies. I sense the problem is somewhere
in scanlines and your sync isnt set right. obviously the server is up... you use
ctrl/atl/b.s. to shut it down. did you also run XF86Config? normally if you just
put in your vertical and horizontal scan frequencies in there by hand (I never
use the predefined ones) the monitor section will allways work.

  Subject: [XFree86] XFree86 to Apple 17"
Studio Display -- only blank screen

[First post -- raw newbie -- please tell me if
  anything is out of step.]

I have a homebrew PC with a Radeon 7500 driving
an Apple 17" Studio Display (LCD -- DVI input)

I have successfully used this hardware w/ Win
  XP
  I have recently installed RH 9 w/ XFree86
  4.3.0
I can boot to text mode, but all attempts to
start X result in a blank screen. I have scanned multiple sites, done
several Google searches, read lots of documentation and tried _many_
  config variations.

To prove the set-up is functional, I have
borrowed a Sony LCD display, attached it to the same DVI port and successfully
gotten X to work on that.

A review of the log reveals no error messages --
DDC detects the Apple monitor and its settings; the ati and radeon drivers
  load; DRI is installed.

After loading everything there is the following
  entry:

Audit [timestamp] X: client # rejected
  from local host

where is a four digit numberthat
  varies
and # is single digit number
  -- generally 4 or 5

  then just two more lines

[drm] removed 1 conserved context for
  kernel
[drm] unmapping 8192 bytes of SAREA [hex] at
  [hex]

Note: I am logged in as root.

Once the blank screen is up, I can only return to
  console by CTRL-ALT-Backspace.

I assume it is something in the Config file, but
  I cannot figure out what.

  Simple question:
Is there anyone who has seen XFree86 driving this
  monitor?
If so, what was the video card and what were the
  Config settings?

I am obviously open to suggestions. This is
potentially a deal-breaker for my running Linux at this point as I can't
afford to change monitors just to resolve this.

  Many thanks in advance.

  bob

[XFree86] Xfree86_3.3.6 vs. 4.3.0 to get s3-module

2003-08-03 Thread Gebhard Dettmar
Title: Xfree86_3.3.6 vs. 4.3.0 to get s3-module

Hello everybody,

I´m a newby so forgive me if I ask stupid questions.

I have debian woody with xfree86 version 4.1.0 and S3 Trio V64+ graphic card (765 Chip) on a Pentium I Board. Unfortunately, version 4.1.0 only supports savage and virge, which means I have either to upgrade to 4.3.0 or downgrade to 3.3.6 to get the s3 module. Which alternative would you prefer? However, is there any difference, since I just need the s3 module? When I run the PreInstall-script of 3.3.6, what will happen if I have a newer glibc version than this script assumes? I mean downgrading makes me a bit suspicious.

Thanks in advance and regards

gebhard

Re: [XFree86] Xfree86_3.3.6 vs. 4.3.0 to get s3-module

2003-08-03 Thread Craig Ringer
I´m a newby so forgive me if I ask stupid questions.
stupid questions are hard to forgive, but questions stemming from a
lack of knowlege are not a problem. I don't see any stupid questions :-)

I have debian woody with xfree86 version 4.1.0 and S3 Trio V64+ graphic
card (765 Chip) on a Pentium I Board. Unfortunately, version 4.1.0 only
supports savage and virge, which means I have either to upgrade to 4.3.0
or downgrade to 3.3.6 to get the s3 module. Which alternative would

Using 3.3.6's XF86_S3 server is definitely the easy way to go. The
server works great on 99% of hardware. You won't RENDER support, xrandr,
etc but that shouldn't be a serious issue.

In other words, if you want AA fonts, hot resolution changes, etc you'll
need XFree86 4.3, but if you don't care or rather sensibly think it's a
bit too much fuss, then I suggest you stick with 3.3.6 . 99% of apps are
happy with a v3.3.6 server (for that matter, 95% are happy with an
ancient X server like that found on SCO OpenServer!).

However, is there any difference, since I just need the s3
module?
The v3 X servers are actually separate programs, one per driver. In
practice it doesn't make much difference.

Usually, apt-get install xserver-s3 and if needed dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-s3 will do the trick.

When I run the PreInstall-script of 3.3.6, what will happen if I
have a newer glibc version than this script assumes? I mean
downgrading makes me a bit suspicious.
The XFree86 3.3 binaries included in Debian 3.0 are built against the
same glibc as the rest of the system, and it won't matter. If you're
considering building your own XFree86 3.3.x then I suggest that you
either use the one that comes in the distro, or upgrade to 4.3 if you
want to build your own.

Craig Ringer

[XFree86] Beginner with ati video card

2003-08-03 Thread Daniel Gilchrist
Hi,

I am a newbie trying to make the transition from Windows to Linux. I
have installed Mandrake 9.1, and I have performed all of the available
package updates.

I am not completely comfortable with using command line terminal yet, so
I am still stuck in GUI mode. I am trying to get everything set up so
that my wife and kids can use the computer without too much hassle.
They don't care to tinker with Linux and just want it to work. I like
to tinker and learn, but in order to completely break away from Windows,
I have to have certain functions working somewhat seamlessly (though
they only work properly with Windows about 1/4 of the time).

I have an ATI All in Wonder 8500DV (64 M video ram), and the setup
programs have detected every function properly except the TV receiver.
The Drakx TV setup doesn't detect the receiver.

Has anyone had this problem and resolved? What skill level is needed to
install the correct drivers, etc.? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Daniel Gilchrist

RE: [XFree86] Radeon 9200: can't get DVI working

2003-08-03 Thread hy0
XFree86 4.3.x detects the card (chip id 0x5961, see log)
and even the DFP on the primary port, but a signal is only
produced on the (not connected) secondary VGA port.

The hardware is working (tested with windows).

I'm using a newer driver version (4.3.99) with explicit
support for the card (I've also tried 4.3.0 with binary
driver from Schneider-Digital and got no signal at all).

Has anybody this card working with DVI? Any hints?

This is something new. It's supposed to work the same as 9000 cards, but
apparently it isn't.
I haven't seen a 9200 with a DVI port so far. What's the brand name of your
card? I'll try to get one for the test.

For now you can try to comment off following two lines in
RADEONRestoreFPRegisters (radeon_driver.c), see if this makes any
difference.
-OUTREG(RADEON_TMDS_PLL_CNTL,restore-tmds_pll_cntl);
-OUTREG(RADEON_TMDS_TRANSMITTER_CNTL,restore-tmds_transmitter_cntl);

  Burkhard

Re: [XFree86] Radeon 9200: can't get DVI working

2003-08-03 Thread rda
I am having exactly this problem with a Radeon 7500 card (OEM =
PowerColor) -- as an added complication it appears to be vary with the
digital monitor attached.

I can get output from XFree to the DVI port when a (borrowed) Sony XDM-72
monitor is attached, but not when my Apple Studio Display 17 LCD is
attached.

The Apple monitor works with the same hardware in Windows and with RH9 in
text mode.

I am also using the CVS ati and radeon drivers downloaded today. I have
spent much time trying various config files without success.

Unfortunately, I am too much a newbie to find the radeon_driver.c file to
make the suggested edit.

Where is it?

Any other suggestions?

Could the MonitorLayout option be relevant here if there is only a single
monitor attached and it is detected by DDC?

TIA

bob

Re: [XFree86] Radeon 9200: can't get DVI working

2003-08-03 Thread A31Chris
Hey, I am new here and I don't know where to put this question. I have an older computer with an ATI Mach(264vt2) graphics card, and the system is running Windows 95. Will these drivers work with this card and operating system? Or are these drivers only for Linux systems? Thank you for any help you can give.

Re: [XFree86] XFree86 to Apple 17 Studio Display -- only blank screen

2003-08-03 Thread rda

THe horiz sync and vert refresh rates are being
detected by DDC and I have put them explicitly in the config -- with no effect.

In response to another suggestion, I also
downloaded the CVS drivers dated last thursday-- again without
effect.

There is an interesting post this weekend by
someone who has a Radeon 9200 card with dual ports that is getting no DVI output
in XFree86 -- I have responded to that post -- I wonder if the two problems are
related.Unfortunately I can't find the file required to implement the suggested
fix.

I feel I am too much a newbie to be this close to
the cutting edge grin.

[XFree86] Old ATI mach(264vt2) video card

2003-08-03 Thread A31Chris
Are these drivers compatible with my card and Windows 95? Or is this just for Linux users? If it is only for Linux, does anyone know where I can get drivers updated beyond ATI's abysmal support for their graphic cards?

Re: [XFree86] ati mach264vt2

2003-08-03 Thread Kevin
I'm new here too. I believe (according to old docs) I'm running the
exact same vid card attached to my old HP Pavillion (trying to test linux).

Running Mandrake 9.1 and XFree 4.3, I've had no luck getting the x
server to start (ERROR: Screens found but no usable config to use...).
So my first instinct is to say no, this card will not work under XFree86.

I'm gonna buy a cheapo trident and try again. This h/w incompatibility
is the only thing that will keep linux from being accepted by the
masses. This card works under Windows.

Off hand I would say XFS is not running. Open a terminal and type;

ps | grep xfs

If it is running you should get something similar to this;

xfs 1019 0.0 1.2 7840 6320 ?S21:10 0:00 xfs -port -1
-daemon -droppriv -user xfs

If it is not running, the do a su in a terminal and (I think RH puts it in
the same place as Mandrake) type this;

/etc/init.d/xfs start

then type;

startx

Trying? My contribution was much closer to a feeble wave in the general
direction of something that might lead you one step closer to a solution
if you squint really hard and do all of the work.

You'll need to send your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file so that we can try to
figure out what's wrong.

Andrew, I think everyone gets a copy of these Emails. I just signed up too. I think it shotguns the emails to everyone signed up as sort of a network effect to see if anyone has figured out the problems. I guess this way members help each other. It sounds really cool, and should make for fantastic progress in all directions. However, it is a whole hell of a lot of emails.

Re: [XFree86] Xfree86 Problems

2003-08-03 Thread Craig Ringer
I keep getting about 50 to 60 e-mails a day from
people who have problems with setting up XFree on
their machines.
I presume you joined the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list?

I signed up for your newsletter, some how these
e-mails are being directed to me.
It's a mailing list. Whenever anybody sends a message to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], the mailing list address, then everybody on the
list gets it. It's an internet discussion and communication tool, an
excellent one - but it can lead to quite a bit of email!

I use automatic filters to sort messages from the (many) mailing lists
I'm on into specific mailboxes, so I never even see them in my inbox. I
can then go over each list at my leasure. Most mail clients can do this,
or if you're using an IMAP server (like me) you can have the server do
it before you even download your mail.

I'm not aware of any XFree86 newsletter, and there doesn't seem to be an
announce list (usually the closest thing to a newsletter that most open
source projects have) for xfree86. What is the best way to stay up to
date with developments in XFree86 w/o reading the lists? Anybody?

It strikes me that a note on the the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list page
saying that traffic is moderate for a mailing list - you can expect up
to 50 messages a day - might be an idea.

If this continues I will have to block your site
on my e-mail.
There's no need for that. If you want to unsubscribe, simply read the
instructions on http://www.xfree86.org/lists.html . In particular, this
is the page you'll want to use to unsubscribe:
