RE: [XFree86] Graphics interface problem

2003-08-14 Thread Oli Comber
Just wanted to add some 'newbie instructions' on to that :0)

To make it always boot in runlevel 3 (non-graphical mode) instead of your
current runlevel 5, edit the file '/etc/inittab' -You'll find an entry with
'initdefault' on the end. Change the 5 to a 3 and save.

You don't need to reboot at this stage...use 'telinit 3' to switch runlevels.

You're now in text-mode. Now run 'startx', you'll get the same result, except
now you'll have lots of info -hopefully describing what went wrong- printed on
the console where you ran 'startx'.

Once you've got to that stage, write back to the list with the new info you've
found and attach your logfile :0)

You might find searching through the list archives for the last few weeks
helpfull-somebody else has recently had a problem with a black screen, seems
to be something to do with the refresh rate they had set for their monitor
making it go to sleep.

Hi,

you were trying to start the X server, which has already been started
(thats why the
_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running
errors arouse)

Maybe your X display stuff isnt properly configured. So check out the
appropriate config file in your /etc directory or start in runlevel 3
and run xf86config

I got the link to the sourceforge site for ATI mach64 cards off of Divx.com.
Some guy claimed 'if you have older mach64 based graphics cards, I can help
you.' Anyway, the link he supplied was to the GATOS page/project. It sounded
to
me like it was supporting ATI graphics cards, although for linux. So I hit
the
links, and ended up subscriping to XFree or whatever. Thought it was for ATI
and Linux users. Am pretty confused as you can tell.

Yep, this is Linux Only, sorry. Though I'm sure they'll be somebody here who
can point you in the right direction, if there is one. Unfortunately, that
someone's not me!

For clarity, I have an older ATI mach64(264vt2) graphics card on an OEM
system with windows 95. ATI's support of their products suck, as the last
updated
driver for this card was made the year I bought this computer new.(97). I was
under the impression the GATOS project was a group of homebrews who made
drivers for ATI cards past ATI's poor support.

Yeah, they are - for Linux, I'm afraid. Thanks for the link though - didn't
know about this, looks like I might be able to get Xv working now :0)

If anyone can clear things up for me. I'd be grateful. Speak slowly and
clearly please, as I am a moron. Thank you.

You may find some joy on driverguide.com (standard login of 'drivers/all')
If not, try googling for the EXACT make/model of the card, as reported by your
current driver. Make sure you put in in inverted commas, and maybe add +win95
as a searchterm.

Hope somebody else can give you a more positive response! :0)

Anyway...

From your logfile, X is complaining you don't have a mouse. Or at least, you
don't have a mouse on /dev/psaux.

If you actually, physically, don't have a mouse, try using the option
allowmouseopenfail in your xf86config-4 file (look at 'man XF86Config')

Also noticed that you're missing the SIS kernel module for DRI, I wonder if
you haven't got kernel support for a PS2 mouse either?

RE: [XFree86] permedia3 card crash

2003-08-14 Thread Oli Comber
Hello chaps,

Apologies for leaving it so long before following this up - I followed your
advice below, Måns, but unfortunately I couldn't spot anything particularly
wierd in the X or Kernel logs.

However, I've just been reading the Framebuffer Howto at Ibiblio, which states
in several places that there can be a conflict between the Vesa framebuffer
device and Permedia cards.

As I'm running the Redhat 7.3 Distribution kernel (not for much longer,
though, soon as I have the time... ;) ) I imagine I've got VesaFB support
compiled in, and FB modules for other cards lying around.

Could this be the problem? For completeness, I would be compiling in PM3FB and
setting the 'usefbdev' option in X, but will this solve the problem here?

If this is the problem, how does bootstrapping it with 'X -configure' get
around it?

Intregued,
-Oli

We installed a dual headed Appian Permedia3 card recently, and all was

well - both heads up and running and the decent config recorded in

Basically, the whole machine freezes the first time X is started UNLESS X
is
first 'bootstrapped' by starting with X -configure. After this, switch
to
runlevel 5 and all is well.

I imagine that the probing X does to autoconfigure must set some
things on the card which the standard X driver doesn't do.

That isn't the case. The probing is done by the standard drivers.

Has anyone else come across this, and is there a fix?

Can you try to obtain a log file? Mount the filesystem where your
/var is with option sync, typically something like

mount -o remount,sync /var

Then try to start X. Reboot and post /var/log/XFree86.0.log here.
Also look for anomalies in the kernel logs.

You're missing an 'EndSection' directive after the 'FontPath' line (ie, for

Your font server isn't running. Start it with '/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start'
and try again.

If this doesn't work, check back in the xfree86.org list archives for info on
how to set manual font paths. As you're probably not interested in serving
fonts to other machines, I think you'll find it a lot easier to use standard
font paths instead of the fontserver.

The server is basically complaining that none of the modes it knows about

I think you might have a few problems running X without a mouse!

If you really want to do this, you could probably do something like:

1. Run GPM with gpm -m /dev/null -R raw
-GPM will become a repeater, creating a mouse device /dev/gpmdata, although
not converting the data (='raw')

2. Specify /dev/gpmdata in your XF86Config-4

Can somebody confirm if this would work? Would it be necessary to run GPM, or
would X be as happy with /dev/null as the mouse?

I don't think I understand the question...Are you asking if the card works
with win95 or with linux? Which drivers are you talking about? What have you
tried so far? If it doesn't work, do you have logfiles?

I assume, as this is the xfree86 list, you must be asking if this card is
supported by Linux. Try using the 'ati' driver. You'll see if your card is
supported from the manual page ('man ati')

My stock answer: run 'X -configure' to get a base config, then RTFM and work
from there :0)

The FM's you want to read are 'man XF86Config', 'man ati', 'man X', 'man
XFree86', and the main docs on xfree86.org.

By Hummingbird, you mean 'Reflections', ie an Xserver on a PC?

Its important to remember that the bit that displays everything, even though
its the remote end that you're sitting at, is the _server_. The machine
hosting the xterm/openoffice/gnome session and sending it to you is the
_client_.

You shouldn't have any/many problems with that: start your Reflections
session, telnet in, export your display (export DISPLAY=PC IP address:0) and
run the appropriate Xclient. If you're using another unix box instead of
reflections, dont forget to 'xhost + suse host' on it to allow the client to
use the display.

If you're feeling cheeky, run Xnest and start Gnome inside it, to get that
'computer in a window' feel ;)

Looks like it can't connect to your font server. I've had a similar problem
recently myself with xfs not wanting to stay running. This has been after
/tmp gets full, though I clear it out and xfs still wont stay up: Check this
list in case anyone can help, as I posted a question yesterday on this topic,
asking how I can debug/get a log from xfs.

In the meantime,

1. Make sure xfs is running - restart it.
2. If it doesn't stay running (check with ps-ef | grep xfs), add manual
fontpaths to your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

The easiest way to do this is run X -configure (as root) to generate an
xf86config.new file in root's home directory, then copy the fontpaths listed
in there to your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.

Hi Wilson,

Look at the manual page for XF86Config (not xf86config!)

Play with your xf86config.new file, start X with
startx -- -xf86config ./xf86config.new

Once you're happy with it, copy it to the config directory:
cp xf86config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

'startx' to check all is well

Also try a 'telinit 5', to make the switch to the Xwindows runlevel

When you're happy, edit /etc/inittab and change the 'initdefault' line to
something like:
id:5:initdefault:

(where before it would have been something like 'id:3:initdefault:')

and make sure there's a line near the bottom like:

x:5:respawn/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

look at man pages for inittab!

(of course, if there wasn't a line like this, your 'telinit 5' wouldn't have
worked ;) )

Hello
My name is Wilson, I had a debian machine but it gave me a Kernel
panic error so I formated it, this computer which was running debian is
from spain and does not have a cdrom nor a floppy drive it is a usb
computer only and it took me a long time to open because the crews are
not from the U.S. Anyhow I manage to open it and had to swap the Hard
Drive to one of my other machine and I formated it to Mandrake, now my
problem is that when I swaped it back to the orginal machine it did not
boot with graphical mode like I set it up with the other machine so I
ran the command XFree86 -configure so that Xfree86 can detect the
video card so I know that once I run that command that I have to edit
XF86Config.new. I dont know how to edit that file so I was wondering
if you guys can help me and tell me with details how to edit it and how
to edit the USB mouse also if it isn't to much I would be really
thankful if you need more details about my machine then let me know
thank you for your wiling ness to read this mail take care and god bless

Wilson

[XFree86] xfs wont stay running

2003-07-29 Thread Oli Comber
Hi,

I've had this problem a couple of times on a particular machine, both times
after I'd had to clean it up because /tmp had got full (Don't ask - I work in
a QA lab ;) )

xfs wont stay up when started with the standard -nodaemon -droppriv flags. It
is fine if started and left in foreground. I get no logs or errors, just a
complete lack of xfs process.

I'm not too concerned - I've fixed it up with manual font paths, and its not
like it's my personal machine - but I'm intregued.

Whats the best way to get some logs out of xfs?

Cheers,
-Oli

How about a small wrapper program which can setuid to the currently logged on
user and run the browser?

Or, assuming the hotplug scripts take care of removing the module when the
device is removed, a cron/otherwise timed script to run every few seconds
checking for the presence of your memory stick module? Or look for an entry
under /proc/bus/usb? (and of course, create/remove a lockfile according to
this state!)

I thought root was able to open a client on any users' server?

hello,

i wanna open a browser-window when the USB-Memory-Stick is inserted.
execution of any program on
insert works as well as opening a browser-window. the problem is, that the
hotplug script runs under
root and i can't tell the users x-server to open the browser.

how do i manage that?

What would be better than using cron or anything 'timed', would be a
'post_install' option in modules.conf to run a 'SETUID' script (owned by the
user in question, and only executable by them and, of course, root) to open
the browser when the usb/mem stick module pops up.

RE: [XFree86] Using multiple device sections

2003-07-25 Thread Oli Comber
I'm having issues getting to the documentation for this (linux-fbdev.org) - I
think maybe my firewall here at work hasn't been patched for ECN - but could
it be done with use fbdev option and the fbset util?

One piece of doc I can get to at the mo:
http://i810fb.sourceforge.net/howto/x411.html

seems to suggest that you can change modes on the fly, although this is aimed
at virtual consoles, not X...

If so, I'd really appreciate some help. I have an NVidia graphics card,

portrait

Windoze, where you can just rotate the screen at the click of a button...
is
there a way of doing this under XFree86 ?

   There is not.

I think that it may be possible be setting up multiple screens (and
devices),
one being in Portrait mode, and one in landscape, then switch between the 2
in
some way. Am I on the right lines?

You could have multiple servers and VT switch between them.
I don't see a way to have multiple screens on the same server and
switch between them.

There doesn't seem to be any info out there on the output format of an FB
dump, apart from people saving the files with a .raw extension. Maybe do
this and try it in gimp?

Came across this, may be of use: http://www.sfires.net/fbshot/

well,

The thing is that I know it must be possible to do it. Commercial products do
the same job. Camtasia for example records on windows the screen. I can
allready do it using xwd or other tools to make the screenshots. The problem
is that with these tools the mousepointer disappears when
a screenshot is made. The user can no more work properly. So I'm thinking in
the way to do it as the VESA driver refresh the screen.Just send the
framebuffer output, in this case not to the display but into a file with a
very simple command like cp framebuffer file. I want to use
for this example the VESA framebuffer that is fb0. (path /dev/fb0). But it is
not working properly.
The file I create is very big a can't be displayed.

here how I'm processing.

[begin of code]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] cp /dev/fb0 t1
[EMAIL PROTECTED] dir t1
-rw-r-1 userusers33554432 2003-07-11 14:35 t1
[EMAIL PROTECTED] display t1
display: Incorrect image header in file (t1).
[end of code]

Any idea or comment?

thanks

What about having a very small, 'always on top', background-colour,

is there any way to force the cursor to stay the same when it is over other

Have a program walk the tree of windows regularly and force the cursor for
all the windows to be transparent.

It's a hack but it sorta works. Once in a while a mouse cursor will be
visible briefly -- and some programs may become confused. Perhaps you can
live with that?

Otherwise you'll have to hack the X server -- or write an X proxy that
translates the requests that set the mouse cursor shape :)
