RE: [XFree86] Graphics interface problem
Just wanted to add some 'newbie instructions' on to that :0) To make it always boot in runlevel 3 (non-graphical mode) instead of your current runlevel 5, edit the file '/etc/inittab' -You'll find an entry with 'initdefault' on the end. Change the 5 to a 3 and save. You don't need to reboot at this stage...use 'telinit 3' to switch runlevels. You're now in text-mode. Now run 'startx', you'll get the same result, except now you'll have lots of info -hopefully describing what went wrong- printed on the console where you ran 'startx'. Once you've got to that stage, write back to the list with the new info you've found and attach your logfile :0) You might find searching through the list archives for the last few weeks helpfull-somebody else has recently had a problem with a black screen, seems to be something to do with the refresh rate they had set for their monitor making it go to sleep. -Oli = Original Message From Sebastian Schneider [EMAIL PROTECTED] = Hi, you were trying to start the X server, which has already been started (thats why the _XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running errors arouse) Maybe your X display stuff isnt properly configured. Some guy claimed 'if you have older mach64 based graphics cards, I can help you.' Anyway, the link he supplied was to the GATOS page/project. It sounded to me like it was supporting ATI graphics cards, although for linux. So I hit the links, and ended up subscriping to XFree or whatever. Thought it was for ATI and Linux users. Am pretty confused as you can tell. Yep, this is Linux Only, sorry. Though I'm sure they'll be somebody here who can point you in the right direction, if there is one. Unfortunately, that someone's not me! For clarity, I have an older ATI mach64(264vt2) graphics card on an OEM system with windows 95. ATI's support of their products suck, as the last updated driver for this card was made the year I bought this computer new.(97). I was under the impression the GATOS project was a group of homebrews who made drivers for ATI cards past ATI's poor support. Yeah, they are - for Linux, I'm afraid. Thanks for the link though - didn't know about this, looks like I might be able to get Xv working now :0) If anyone can clear things up for me. I'd be grateful. Speak slowly and clearly please, as I am a moron. Thank you. You may find some joy on driverguide.com (standard login of 'drivers/all') If not, try googling for the EXACT make/model of the card, as reported by your current driver. RE: [XFree86] permedia3 card crash
Hello chaps, Apologies for leaving it so long before following this up - I followed your advice below, Måns, but unfortunately I couldn't spot anything particularly wierd in the X or Kernel logs. However, I've just been reading the Framebuffer Howto at Ibiblio, which states in several places that there can be a conflict between the Vesa framebuffer device and Permedia cards. As I'm running the Redhat 7.3 Distribution kernel (not for much longer, though, soon as I have the time... ;) ) I imagine I've got VesaFB support compiled in, and FB modules for other cards lying around. Could this be the problem? For completeness, I would be compiling in PM3FB and setting the 'usefbdev' option in X, but will this solve the problem here? If this is the problem, how does bootstrapping it with 'X -configure' get around it? Intregued, -Oli = Original Message From [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Måns Rullgård) = Oliver Comber [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: We installed a dual headed Appian Permedia3 card recently, and all was going well - both heads up and running and the decent config recorded in /etc/xf86config - until we rebooted. Basically, the whole machine freezes the first time X is started UNLESS X is first 'bootstrapped' by starting with X -configure. After this, switch to runlevel 5 and all is well. I imagine that the probing X does to autoconfigure must set some things on the card which the standard X driver doesn't do. That isn't the case. The probing is done by the standard drivers. Has anyone else come across this, and is there a fix? Can you try to obtain a log file? Mount the filesystem where your /var is with option sync, typically something like mount -o remount, sync /var Then try to start X. Reboot and post /var/log/XFree86.0.log here. I don't think I understand the question...Are you asking if the card works with win95 or with linux? Which drivers are you talking about? What have you tried so far? If it doesn't work, do you have logfiles? I assume, as this is the xfree86 list, you must be asking if this card is supported by Linux. Try using the 'ati' driver. You'll see if your card is supported from the manual page ('man ati') My stock answer: run 'X -configure' to get a base config, then RTFM and work from there :0) The FM's you want to read are 'man XF86Config', 'man ati', 'man X', 'man XFree86', and the main docs on xfree86.org. -Oli = Original Message From [EMAIL PROTECTED] = Alright, I'm going to try this one more time. By Hummingbird, you mean 'Reflections', ie an Xserver on a PC? Its important to remember that the bit that displays everything, even though its the remote end that you're sitting at, is the _server_. The machine hosting the xterm/openoffice/gnome session and sending it to you is the _client_. You shouldn't have any/many problems with that: start your Reflections session, telnet in, export your display (export DISPLAY=PC IP address:0) and run the appropriate Xclient. If you're using another unix box instead of reflections, dont forget to 'xhost + suse host' on it to allow the client to use the display. If you're feeling cheeky, run Xnest and start Gnome inside it, to get that 'computer in a window' feel ;) -Oli = Original Message From Yann E. I'm having issues getting to the documentation for this (linux-fbdev.org) - I think maybe my firewall here at work hasn't been patched for ECN - but could it be done with use fbdev option and the fbset util? One piece of doc I can get to at the mo: http://i810fb.sourceforge.net/howto/x411.html seems to suggest that you can change modes on the fly, although this is aimed at virtual consoles, not X... -Oli = Original Message From Mark Vojkovich [EMAIL PROTECTED] = On Thu, 24 Jul 2003, [iso-8859-1] Gareth wrote: All, Does anyone have a Flatscreen working, both in Portrait mode and Landscape mode under XFree86 and Linux? If so, I'd really appreciate some help. I have an NVidia graphics card, and can set an option in the XFree86 config file to rotate the screen to portrait mode, but can not work out how to enable the same sort of functionallity as Windoze, where you can just rotate the screen at the click of a button... is there a way of doing this under XFree86 ? There is not. I think that it may be possible be setting up multiple screens (and devices), one being in Portrait mode, and one in landscape, then switch between the 2 in some way. Am I on the right lines? You could have multiple servers and VT switch between them. I don't see a way to have multiple screens on the same server and switch between them. RE: FWD: RE: [XFree86] read directly from the video card framebuffer
There doesn't seem to be any info out there on the output format of an FB dump, apart from people saving the files with a .raw extension. Maybe do this and try it in gimp? Came across this, may be of use: http://www.sfires.net/fbshot/ -Oli = Original Message From james amen atayi [EMAIL PROTECTED] = Am Freitag, 11. I can allready do it using xwd or other tools to make the screenshots. The problem is that with these tools the mousepointer disappears when a screenshot is made. The user can no more work properly. So I'm thinking in the way to do it as the VESA driver refresh the screen.Just send the framebuffer output, in this case not to the display but into a file with a very simple command like cp framebuffer file. I want to use for this example the VESA framebuffer that is fb0. (path /dev/fb0). But it is not working properly. The file I create is very big a can't be displayed. here how I'm processing. RE: [XFree86] Hide mouse pointer under XF86-4.3.0
What about having a very small, 'always on top', background-colour, transparent cursor window in the corner, and (periodically?) set the mouse coords to it..? -Oli = Original Message From Peter \Firefly\ Lund [EMAIL PROTECTED] = On Thu, 10 Jul 2003, Michael Heydon wrote: That still has the problem that it only stays as that image while over the root window (iirc). is there any way to force the cursor to stay the same when it is over other windows? Have a program walk the tree of windows regularly and force the cursor for all the windows to be transparent. It's a hack but it sorta works. Once in a while a mouse cursor will be visible briefly -- and some programs may become confused. Perhaps you can live with that? Otherwise you'll have to hack the X server -- or write an X proxy that translates the requests that set the mouse cursor shape :) -Peter Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day; Give him a religion, and he'll starve to death while praying for a fish ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86 ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
