XFree86 will then write a basic configuration to disk and tell you how to start using that configuration. When you like it, copy it to /etc/X11/XF86Config. You could also try another depth that might work, like 16, if you know how to edit that into your configuration. Re: [XFree86] Startx problem
The vga driver is a generic driver which only supports depth 4 and depth 8, and at low resolution. You'll want to use the driver specific to your graphics hardware instead. Mark. (EE) Problem parsing the config file (EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile() where as it works when I use my own login. Why is it so and how can I fix it? When you start X as a user, it's using a different XF86Config file. If I remember correctly (I'm at work right now, so I can't check anything), X searches for an XF86Config file in a number of different locations. As root it appears to find the first one as /root/XF86Config. This file is not accessible as a user, so it will probably find a config file at a different default location (/etc/X11 for example). I think that if you remove/move the /root/XF86Config file, that it should work for root as well. The file /root/XF86Config contains an error according to your logfile. [XFree86] startx problem
Well, I'm getting these errors when I try to send the command 'startx' on my linux box. WW: TSENG, NO MATCHING FOR INSTANCE (BUS ID PCI [numbers here]) DEVICE And says that about 20 times. Then I get this: EE: NO DEVICES DETECTED then, looking through the log it says: WW: OPEN APM FAILED (/dev/apm_bios)(no such device) At the end after trying to run it says: Fatal Error: No screens found XIO: Fatal IO error 104(connection reset by peer) on X server :0.0 after 0 request (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. These are the errors I got. If you wish to see the hole log, please tell me how to copy it onto a floppy, then i'll send it. My video card is: Tseng Labs ET 4000/W32 PCI, 2 meg's memory. I also run Linux 2.4.22 with the Slackware 9.1 distro. The XFree86 version I have is 4.3.0. If you could help that would be great. This is my first time installig linux, but I know my way around through windows and a little bit through linux via SSH on shells. Please help. Also, I think maybe one reason why it doesn't work is that xfree doesn't support the PCI version of my card, just the ET 4000/W32. Best, -Ray G. [XFree86] startx problem
Hi, My machine (Compaq Presario) has both XP and linux on it. I boot linux via floppy. My version of linux is advanced server 2.4.9-e.3. When I type in command startx at the linux console it comes with a message unknown host, problem parsing the config file and no screens found. My init is entering runlevel 5 which I presume is right. I am not able to send the log file as I do not know how to access and where to access the linux log file from Windows XP. My hostname looks weird and is something like this X1-6-00-10-dc-ea-a3-c9. Would really appreciate if someone could help me in figuring out this startx problem. Thanks a lot. Ramesh. __ Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo!
