Hi Kundu,

Try the following format while starting Xfbdev

*Xfbdev* [*:display*]** [*option*...]**

in options give *-2button* or *-3button* to emulate 2 or three button
mouse .

Best of luck.

It sounds like /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc isn't in your font path. See xset's

You only have one mode to switch to. You need to have multiple
modes listed on the Modes line in the XF86Config. The first is
the default. ctrlalt+/- move through the rest. Eg.

  Modes 1024x768 800x600 640x480

The XFree86 version that shipped with RedHat 7.1 undoubtedly
predates your graphics hardware. You'll either need to update
to an XFree86 version that includes a driver for that card
(XFree86 4.4.0 or newer is recommended, but if I recall correctly,
4.3.0 might have worked on that card), or go to NVIDIA's web
site and install their binary drivers, which should work with
  your current XFree86 version.

What you are experiencing now is probably no drivers claiming
they support that card so it's falling back to basic VGA which
won't do better than 640x480 in depth 4.

Hi Tad,

Good to hear you got X running. Your friend is right in some respect -
XFree86 is not a GUI or as they are generally known as in Linux - a
Window Manager. KDE is a window manager but it requires XFree86 to run
since KDE (like every other Window Manager) is not able to access the
your computer's hardware directly. Therefore, XFree86 provides access to
your display and control hardware (mouse, keyboard, video card, etc)
whilst a window manager is responsible for organising how your windows /
programs are displayed.

Coming from a Microsoft Windows or MacOS perspective I can understand
this may be a little daunting but once you get used to the concept it's
not that difficult.

Now, since you appear to be quite new I'd suggest you install both KDM
and KDE. KDM is a graphical login manager, and can be configured to load
X automatically when you boot. Once you login using KDM, it will
automatically start your default window manager (which should be KDE).

To do this from the linux console type the following as root or a
superuser (ENTER means to hit the ENTER key):

apt-get update ENTER
apt-get install kde kdm ENTER

Be aware, KDE is quite big so it could take some time to get the
packages if your internet connection is slow. It's well worth it though
since it's quite easy to use. Make sure you choose KDM as the default
display manager when prompted by the configuration process.

Also, a couple of tips. If you ever need to quit X and don't know how
(i.e. you've just got a screen and no mouse pointer or something has
gone wrong with your window manager) you can force it to quit by
pressing the CONTROL, ALT, and BACKSPACE keys all together. If you
started X from the command line, you'll be dropped back there or if it
was started by KDM, a new copy should be started for you. Secondly, you
can always get back to a console by pressing CONTROL, ALT, and F#
together - where F# is either the F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, or F6 key.
After you've finished with the console and if X is still running you can
get back to it by pressing CONTROL, ALT and F7 together.

Anyway, I hope that helps you a little, feel free to repost if you need
more help.

Cheers,
Lance

I figured out how to run those commands. I was just told by a friend that
xfree86 is not a gui. Is that true? I was able to run XFree86 -autoconfig.
It brought up a screen and mouse pointer only. I had to shut the computer
down. It would not do anything else. If XFree86 is not a gui, what the hell
is it? Thank you for your help. I would love to keep in touch as I learn
about all of this. My friend tells me to forget about XFree86 and get KDE.
What do you think.

I'm also running Debian (testing) and I've also had some experience
running on laptops so perhaps I can help you. What commands are you
trying to use?

By the way, to start X you will need to type 'startx' at the console -
not 'xStart'!

Re: [XFree86] Help Installing

2005-09-15 Thread Lance Duivenbode

Anyway, I hope that helps you a little, feel free to repost if you need
more help.

Cheers,
Lance

Your XFree86 version (4.2.0) predates your video card and is
too old to support it. You have two options: update to XFree86
4.4.0 or newer which comes with an XFree86-supported driver that
works with that card, or use NVIDIA's binary Linux driver from NVIDIA's
web site. The later is supported by NVIDIA directly and should
work with your current X-server.

There are a lot of comments in your log file that say it's using the built-in
configuration. This is probably not a good idea.
If when you boot you are dropped straight to a text-based login prompt, then
try the following:
+ Login as root
+ Run one of the following programmes:
  - xf86cfg
  - xf86config
+ Make sure you answer all questions as best you can. I can't remember which,
but one of those programmes gives you a low-res GUI which you can use to
configure your system. It takes a little getting used-to.
+ Try restarting your X system (as root, try typing startx (obviously without
the marks)).

X is complaining that it can't find the device /dev/mouse. Does this exist?
Usually this is a symbolic link to the *real* device, which in the case of a
PS/2 mouse would normally be /dev/psaux (although, if it's a usb mouse it could
be /dev/input/mice or /dev/input/mouse0).

Possible actions to take:
1) Check to see if the /dev/mouse device is actually there. If not, and you
*know* what the *real* device name is, then make the link yourself.
2) Change the X config file to use the *real* device name.

My the problem is that is not start Xserver, when its monitor is IBM

Know you help me? I attach the err.log file.
I think I see the problem in the following lines from your log file:

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
 (EE) No devices detected.

I think what is happening is you configured XFree86 to use an Intel
driver when you needed to configure it to use the radeon driver. If
you edit the Driver line under the Device section of your
/etc/X11/XF86Config and make it look something like:

 Section Device
  ...[Other stuff here]...
  Driver radeon
  ...[Other stuff here]...
 EndSection

you may have more luck.

Another option is to run '/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -configure' as root
and follow the prompts. This will attempt to automatically create a
working configuration for you.

Good luck!

never be able to do cursor-like things with it like getting
cursor-related events.

Currently, I have used ``X Input Extension'' (libXi) to receive event from
the second mouse. I have removed
``AlwaysCore'' option from XF86Config file at the second mouse section. From
 that the second mouse can't
change the position of the cursor (only the first mouse can), however, the
event from the second mouse can detect
and distinguish from the core event (from the first mouse) i.e. the event
from the second mouse is ``extension event''.
But when I read parameters from that second mouse event, ... T_T, the
position variables is the same as the cursor
which controlled by the first mouse ... so sad

Could you give me suggestions? How could I create two independent cursors
 controlled by two mice?

Currently I am thinking about read/write second mouse directly from
 /dev/input/mice (something).
Anyway, I think it's better to do it in X level But how?

Re: [XFree86] Help

2004-08-25 Thread Mark Vojkovich
I think first off you want to be using the native Matrox driver
instead of the generic Vesa driver like you are doing currently.
In the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, replace Driver vesa with
Driver mga.

If problems persist, try using the xtt font module instead
of freetype. That is, in the XF86Config file replace Load freetype
with Load xtt.

Mark.

RE: [XFree86] help with debian on compaq

2004-05-20 Thread Cynthia Grossen
Knoppix does a good job with the autodetection routines. It also has
very conservative default settings. For example its default with XFree86
is to use the vesa driver. This driver almost always works unless your
font server crashes and Knoppix doesn't use a font server.

You can use Knoppix to get XFree86 setup if you wish. Just copy the file
/etc/X11/XFree85Config-4 to your hard drive after you've got everything
configured to your satisfaction. You can also install Knoppix to your
hard drive, it's based on Debian. :)

Just in case you haven't already found it, here is the link to the
English language Knoppix resource site.
http://www.knoppix.net/
http://www.knoppix.net/docs/index.php/CheatCodes - useful for
configuring Knoppix at boot.

Actually, I had tried that route once, before posting to the list. My
attempts to make X work from binary failed, as did my efforts at
building from source. I'm kindof green.

Here's a possibly relevant question: Howcome knoppix does X so sweetly
on my machine. The corolary question is, might there be some way to use
this fact to help me get going?

The version of XFree86 that you are using doesn't recognize your
graphics card. That's why you end up with the vesa driver. The vesa
driver is unaccelerated and that may be what you are seeing. (?)

Your version is:
XFree86 Version 4.1.0.1 / X Window System

You should upgrade to version 4.4. You may find that your other problems
go away with the update. If not, send us the log and config files again.

Any chance that's doable via debian packages? (I completely failed last time I tried

Maybe you should try to change your driver..

Add the elodriver into your module section
Load elographics_drv.o

It should be in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/elographics_drv.o
If not, find it on the net...

Then change your Driver in the input section to

Driver elographics

If you have the right value for Xmin etc.. It should work.

These works for me (Xfree 4.3..)

Re: [XFree86] Help with broken X please.

2004-03-24 Thread Mark Vojkovich
If /proc/pci also shows multiple instances of that S3 card
then I think your motherboard bios has a bug. If /proc/pci
only shows one S3 card, then this looks like an XFree86 bug
and perhaps you should try XFree86 4.4 instead. If /proc/pci
shows multiple S3 cards, I don't think XFree86 4.4 would work
any better than your current server.

Maybe just moving the S3 card to a different PCI slot would
help work around the problem if it's a motherboard bios bug.

Your first problem appears to be that the version of XFree86 included with
winlinux2003 is too old to know about your nVidia video card. You should be
using XFree86 4.3.0 or possibly try a (quite stable) 4.4.0 pre-release.

Next it appears these files are not available in your install. While you don't
actually need these extensions, it indicates that you likely have other problems
with your system. You may be able to reinstall the XFree86 packages (rpm, .deb,
whatever) that included them.

None of the video modes in your XF86Config file does match
the capabilities of your hardware (monitor and grafics board).

Try out alternate resolutions, refresh rates and modelines for your setup.

I cant say if your VESA BIOS does impackt somewhat badly here
because i dont know too much about i845G, but maybe in more
recent XFree86 beta versions there is a likeliness that most of your
problems are already fixed. I mean those XF86 4.3.99.xxx Betas
were reported working quite well and incorporate a bigger bunch
of fixes, especially for graphics hardware from the last 12 months.

Re: [XFree86] Help NVIDIA!!

2003-12-01 Thread Mark Vojkovich
If you remove NVIDIA's drivers the
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a from Mesa will get used
(instead of the libglx.so of NVIDIA). This is all in software,
however, and very slow.

NVIDIA's binary drivers should have worked, however. I think
with some kernels you need to pass nopentium and noapic options
to the kernel. And of course, you'd want to be using the latest
(4496) drivers.

Use NVIDIA's driver, while not being open source(bad), it does provide a much higher frame rate than the xfree driver(good). The driver is available on NVIDIA's website along with fairly simple install instructions. Remeber to download both the kernel module(NVIDIA_kernel) and the xfree86 glx module(NVIDIA_GLX). It should work with your current xfree install.

Remeber this is only an alternative to upgrading xfree and using the newer nv driver. Maybe someday nvidia will release the source for the drivers.

Reality is but a brief respite between my fantasies.

You haven't given us much to go on. Which distro are you installing? If
you're new to linux, most people elect to try redhat. Are you using the
latest redhat version (I think it's 9.1 or something like that)? Are you
using the latest XFree86 (4.3.0)? You need to be more specific about your

problems, but also XFree86 specific).

Re: [XFree86] Help!, X installation novice, XFree86 Version4.2.0 for Linux 8.0/2.4.18-14

2003-10-31 Thread Mark Vojkovich
   GeForce4 MX isn't officially supported before XFree86 4.3.0
(some earlier cards might work with 4.2.0, but I wouldn't bet on
it). You'll want to be using the nv driver. You could
try using the nv driver now (replace driver vesa with driver nv
in the XF86Config), but if it doesn't work, you'll need to
upgrade to 4.3.0.

You could also try installing NVIDIA's binary Linux drivers
which should work with your current XFree86 version, but we are
not in a position to support third party drivers on this list.
We can only support the nv driver that comes with XFree86.

If this happened while you were doing something that uses
TrueType fonts (like web browsing), you might want to try
replacing Load freetype with Load xtt in the XF86Config

You need to configure the X-server. Presumably ASPLinux
has some utility to do that? Currently it is configured for
a dual card system with two Matox cards, however you have
one single NVIDIA TNT2 card.

If ASPLinux doesn't provide a utility. XFree86 -configure
may generate a useable XF86Config file.

Hello! I'm hoping you might be able to shed some light on this for me.
I'm
trying to convert my girlfriend over to Unix from Windows, and while she's
game for doing it, her one hard and fast requirement is a graphical web
browser. So, she needs X. Unfortunately, I have no clue why X doesn't want
to work on her Compaq.

I'm hoping that some kind soul receiving this email might understand
what's happening here. Recommendations for how to proceed will be gladly
accepted.

Here's what my kernel says is going on with the video hardware in the
box:

agp0 at pchb0: aperture at 0x4400, size 0x400
vga1 at pci0 dev 1 function 0: Intel 82810E Graphics Controller (rev. 0x03)

PS: The output, below, is from a clean run of xf86cfg. I've also failed
to
get things running with an xf86config-generated configuration. Thank you
very much for your help!

copied Xinstall.sh (from the common subdirectory) to a temporary directory
under root (/root/jrmtemp).

ran: sh Xinstall.sh -check from that temporary directory.

Got an error message saying I needed extract or extract.exe in the same
directory.

found extract in one of the linux-ix86-glibc2x subdirectories (I think
it was 23, I see now that extract is a different size in each of the
subdirectories.)

reran: sh Xinstall.sh -check

got the a.out message, called for help.

Thanks!

We're missing some context. That is an error that should never
happen and indicates broken X-server or module code. What were
 you doing that caused that?

 Mark.

This is a real bug. It should be:

 if (cPtr-PanelType  ChipsLCD)
 ChipsNew-XR[0x51] |= 0x04;
 else
 ChipsNew-XR[0x51] = ~0x04;

Could you please test this for me?

 Egbert.

OK, I was tested this for you.
Now, we have useal module for ct65548 and other chips.
But its have a probrem what mouse cursor write black dot.

I found your name 'Egbert Eich' on 'ct_driver.c'.
We can resume test for ct65548 now.
Shall you make contact to David Bateman (I found His name on 'ct_cursor.c') ?

Is your LCD a TFT or a DSTN? What about the error messages in the
logs does it say

(--) CHIPS(0): TFT probed

or

In any case although its been a while since I looked at the code, I
think you have identified a real bug. I'd suggest a better fix might
be the attached patch against the current CVS

RE: [XFree86] Help

2003-08-18 Thread Alexander Stohr
doing some research with http://yourvote.com/pci once again,

XFree86 Version 4.0.3 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 16 March 2001
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

totally outdated and unsupported!!!
you should upgrade to a newer version of XFree86 - really.

(II) PCI: PCI scan (all values are in hex)
(II) PCI: 00:00:0: chip 10de,01a4 card , rev b2 class 06,00,00 hdr
80
(II) PCI: 00:00:1: chip 10de,01ac card 10de,0c11 rev b2 class 05,00,00 hdr
80

you are running an nForce 1 based system.
you must ensure to have latest patches for your kernel applied
if you want to run hardware accellerated OpenGL without crashing
your system.

(II) PCI: 02:00:0: chip 10de,01a0 card 10de,0c11 rev b1 class 03,00,00 hdr
00

you are having the GeForce2 integrated grafics chipset.
i cant see anything else on PCI bus that has a grafics ID.
you might be forced to get either latest DRI development
beta drivers (for X4.3.0) or possibly try something from
your grafics hardware vendor's download area.

(EE) VGA(0): Given depth (16) is not supported by this driver.
(II) UnloadModule: vga
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

i am not finally sure - possibly only 4bpp and lower is
supported by vga drivers. at least i am sure VGA does not
offer 16 bpp, but maybe only 8bpp for 320x200 resolution.

you might have better success trying the VESA drivers.

I'm afraid I don't speak Spanish, at least, I think that's Spanish! :0)
Anyway...

From your logfile, X is complaining you don't have a mouse. Or at least, you
don't have a mouse on /dev/psaux.

If you actually, physically, don't have a mouse, try using the option
allowmouseopenfail in your xf86config-4 file (look at 'man XF86Config')

Also noticed that you're missing the SIS kernel module for DRI, I wonder if
you haven't got kernel support for a PS2 mouse either?

the same problem.
XFree86 4.3.x fails at the RAMDAC probe and exits.
I now use ¨vesa¨ in stead of the ¨S3¨ driver.
Now I am stuck with 1024x768 / 16bpp in stead of 1152x864 /16bpp !
I could go back to XFree86 3.3.6 that one worked ( with SVGA ) ...
no problems at all.
I don't want to go back to 3.3.6 ... there must be another solution.
I wondered if you ever found a solution ( exept: buy an other card .. ) ?

RE: [XFree86] HELP with XF86Config-4 file on DEll Inspiron 5000e with ATI RAGE 128 Mobility running MDK 9.1

2003-08-10 Thread Oli Comber
Hopefully other people can be a lot more help than me, but for the moment you
could try commenting out the refresh rates in the 'screen' section. The
server will use a safe default, which wont be a fantastic rate, but at least
you might be able to see something.

The server is basically complaining that none of the modes it knows about
(including the modelines specified explicitly in your xf86config) fit the
refresh rate specified.

2003-07-27 Thread Craig Ringer
I am getting following error message during installation of ORACLE9i on
Redhat Linux 7.3. XFree86 4.2.0 already installed on it and Display mode
set to 0.

* Initializing Java Virtual Machine from
/tmp/OraInstall2003-07-26_02-19-42AM/jre/bin/java. ** Please wait... *

* /tmp/OraInstall2003-07-26_02-19-42AM/jre/bin/i386/native_threads/java:
error while loading shared *

* libraries ** : libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2: cannot open shared object
file: No such file or directory *
This is not an XFree86 problem. You have an incompatable or missing
libstdc++ library. Please contact Oracle support, a local linux user
group, or your linux distro's technical support offerings.
