Are you using the latest XMail version? The Pop3LogPasswd defaults to 0,
so even if that's a space instead of a TAB, you'd still be getting an
empty string in the password field of the log file.

I think that 1.25 is included with Debian Testing. Unfortunately I don't
know if it's actively being maintained (1.22 had been in there until
recently!).
Usually it's quite possible to mix packages of stable and testing
distributions, you may, however, have to upgrade more packages (libraries)
to the testing branch.

Hello XMail community. Has anyone found a way to change the=20
way XMail POP3 SMTP respond to queries by identifying=20
themselves. For example the server responds to a POP3=20
connection at TCP 110 with:
+OK [EMAIL PROTECTED] [XMail 1.24 POP3 Server]=20
service ready; Mon 20 Aug 2007 01:12:41 -0400

Controlling banner pages are the easiest way to make life a=20
bit more difficult for the black hats. Needless to say, ideal=20
would be to also control the closing banner as well:=20

+OK [XMail 1.24 POP3 Server] closing session

A search of my archives of messages to xmail did not match any=20
relevant questions. If nobody has, then perhaps this should be=20
a feature request.=20

Thanks,
Hamid.

Subject: [xmail] POP3 external account sync

What I want to do is the is the following:

1. Let xmail retrieve email from an external pop3 account containing all
the mail send to a particular domain
2. Forward it with smtp to a mailserver containing the mailboxes from
this domain

I know there are better ways to relay email, this is a very particular
case which cannot be solved another way at this time

Any ideas to make this work?

Look at the FetchHdrTags variable in the server.tab file. You can use it to
set whatever headers you want to search for in the POP3 links.

 Hi,

I have the following POP3 link defined:

 ?speedo.eesh.net,speedometry.co.il,netvision.net.ilpostmaster
 mail.netvision.net.ilmypop3mbmyxmcryptpwdCLR

So far so good. It works fine for most messages, but every now and then
it fails me when messages arrive without the To: header. AFAIK, the To
header is only used for display purposes, and what I would expect is
that XMail would use the adress in the last Received: header.

As I am the postmaster, I am getting all those rogue messages, and
they're hard to identify (Sometimes they just look like SPAM), and just
generally annoying. What can I do, except for setting the default
 mailbox to someone else? :)

 Thanks!

 Liron.

The problem wasn't with the headers. It was cause of LF withou CR.
I'd copied some maildir files from qmail to xmail and qmail uses only LF, b=
ut=20
xmail uses CR/LF.
Problem solved.
Thanx.

for undetermined emails.

I'm setting up such a pop3 link now and I don't want to lose important

account name is for undetermined emails) correct? Or should I create a

catch messages to addresses not defined in felins.net and pets.org?

Thanks!

I've found the problem... the external server where the mail server

Why this? To do only one connection with the external server...

I hope you understand me...

Unless, of course, you don't want to receive mail from the outside world.

smtprelay.tab is the list of IP addresses allowed to relay mail through
your SMTP server. Generally speaking, this should be empty - although you
can add entries for local hosts that send mail (such as web servers that
generate email). Just remember that any IP address listed in smtprelay.tab

Your smtp log should show any activity by the XMail smtp server

believe the smail log shows activity by the XMail version of sendmail
but I'm not 100%sure of that one.

Relaying mail means that a host can send mail through your server without
restriction.

If the host is a local host (ie. under your control), this may be a good
thing - as it means they can send mail to anyone they choose.

If the host is not a local host (ie. is not under your control), this is
likely a bad thing - it's one of the means that spammers use to send out
their email.

However, it is not necessary for local users' IP addresses to be listed in
smtprelay.tab, as their mail clients can usually provide authentication to
the server (ie. they set their mailbox user name and password in their mail
clients, and tell it to authenticate when sending mail as well as when
receiving mail).

The only time it's really necessary to list addresses in smtprelay.tab is
for local host machines which are not capable of authenticating when
sending mail - the most common example is a web server that has to generate
emails (such as order confirmations). Web pages typically aren't set up to
authenticate to your mail server when sending their emails.

I had thought that the xmail schedule could be disabled with -Y0.
Then using cron to generate different pop3links.tab files and create a
..psync-trigger file.

That way you could have different pop3links on different schedules.

What do you think Davide? Should it work?

does -Y0 disable the scheduling of pop3links.
while still allowing .psync-trigger file to trigger a pop3link once.

Just curious, you mentioned IMAP being implemented... do you have any
tentative time frame on IMAP implementation?

I do not give ETA anumore since every time I try I get more stuuf to do
and it gets delayed. When it comes, you'll definetely see it. If you have
urgent need of IMAP you have basically two solutions :

1) Integrate XMail with one existing IMAP server
2) Use another mail server that already has IMAP

 Hello!

I've just setup Xmail on Win2K and I want to know
if possible to set secure password authentication when
 clients log on pop3 server?
(by default all usernames and passwords are sent to
 pop3 server in plain text)

XMail supports APOP. So if your POP3 clients support it, you'll be set.

[xmail] Re: POP3 Authentication error for Outlook 2000

2003-03-04 Thread Seth A. Munroe

Try unchecking the option to login using Secure Password Authentication.

I believe OL XP supports APOP, but OL 2000 does not.

If that doesn't help, try specifying the full email address for the user
name: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I don't see why that one would be different between 2000 and XP, so I think
it's probably the SPA setting.

Are you sure it's an outlook issue and not just a general networking issue?

Can those machines telnet to the mail server over port 110 using the same
hostname as specified in the pop3 server settings of outlook?

use these commands:
TELNET hostname.com 110
USER username
PASS password
STAT
QUIT

that should log you in to the pop server, then show you the numger of
messages and total byte count for that user.

[xmail] Re: POP3 sv. IMAP4

2002-08-11 Thread co

Thanks for helping.. :)

I guess what i am trying to do is to make POP3 account to work like an IMAP4
account... With all messages on the server and all...

/Chotie

In most mail clients you find an advanced setting leave mail on server.
I know in outlook it is.

normal pop3 protocol looks like this : (u can try this with a telnet
session
 to pop3.server.host.com port 110.)
 ---
 telnet o pop3.server.host.com 110
 USER [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 PASS your_password
 LIST or STAT
 - LIST will get you a list of all mail messages waiting to be collected
 - STAT will show you how many mails are waiting and makes a grand total in
 bytes
 RETR 1
 - the command to doanload message #1
 DELE 1
 - if succesfully retrieved normally the message is deleted with this
command
 RETR 2
 DELE 2
 .
 QUIT
 ---

With setting the leave mail on server setting the DELE .. command is not
 issued.

I cannot make sense out of what you want exactly but a pop3 mailserver
will
send you ALWAYS all the messages it has to you. (Without deletion that
is).
Is this they way you want things to work?

 Frederik Gallon

 Hello everybody!! :)

Hope the summer was great for you all...

I have been thinking about IMAP4 and the great functionallity
about storing messages on the mailserver.

Is this a function that exists in POP3 in any way..?

I am no expert on the POP3 commands but have understood that
some commands retrieve mails without removing them..

Does anyone know about a mailclient that works with POP3
in order to not delete messages on the server..?

Most POP3 clients should give this option, I would think, including
Outlook, Eudora, Outlook Express, and Netscape/Mozilla.

For Outlook/Outlook Express, specifically, the option is on the Advanced
tab of the account properties sheet (Leave messages on server). You can
also, optionally, have it set to delete messages when removed from
Outlook's Deleted Items folder, or delete messages after a certain
number of days.

[xmail] Re: POP3 logging

2002-04-11 Thread Henrik Steffen

 - how many messages were stored or deleted
  pop3 does not store messages

maybe store was the wrong word:

after retrieving a message it can either be deleted or kept on the server.

e.g, I have some customers who leave their messages on the server for 5 days
after download. they are using some eudora feature.

maybe the pop3-log could indicate:

- number of messages at login-time: 15
- messages downloaded: 15
- messages kept on server: 8
- messages deleted: 7

maybe even the number of bytes should be shown for statistics/accounting
purpose

just an idea

[xmail] Re: POP3 Passwords / Security Issues

2002-03-15 Thread Jason Badry

It isn't my intention to offend either of you, as Xmail and Xmail-WAI are
great programs. My focus is more on security, and I do in fact have a
firewall with VPN and am somewhat knowledgable about the various
encryptions/etc. No matter how secure a system is, or I think it is, I
just always have a concern with passwords stored in any file
plain-text. It is difficult to feel 100% confident that nobody will ever
get access to that file, and then if the people with those passwords reused
them anywhere, it could open many other doors.

I was previously using QPopper with sasl and apop configured in
Linux. Now, I was quite happy to see your Win2K implementations, and this
is why I switched over. QPopper did have an option to force users to use
APOP or other methods, so I was inquiring about this. Perhaps in a future
release it might be an option to consider.

Now I understand your responses and there are reasons for the plain-text at
this time. I would encourage you and others though to use hashes as you
have in Xmail if possible, but always try and avoid leaving passwords in
files, no matter how secure the file system appears. You just never know
what Microsoft/other vulnerability will show up next.

Thanks for all your work thus far,

... Jason Badry

You don't need to enable full access to everyone. Enable read-only

for this user to xmadmin/attachments and xmwconfig/mailproc.

Sorry, for me the main problem isn't to develop WAI, but to develop help
and documentation and I'm expecting the WAI users to be as experienced
web app developers and sys admins as I am ;-)

[xmail] Re: POP3 Connections hanging / status of the External POP Accounts

2002-03-11 Thread Stephan Hartmann

It is necessary to set -Md really on the command-line, not only in the
environment variable MAIL_CMD_LINE, because XMail decides whether it forks as
a deamon or not (stay in foreground) depending on this argument. Output then
goes to stdout.

Yes with the debug command line option XMail stays in foreground. In my case
MAIL_CMD_LINE does not work, so i write the command line options directly in
the XMail line of the startup script, then the options work fine. :-)
