I was just looking at the Fractals and Visualization lab and noticed that

Henry - I agree with the idea of installing J to
generic, rather than release-specific, directories.
However, installing it at the root is so last millenium. I'm pretty sure
all major OSs have conventions about where software gets installed. I
personally dislike the Windows high-level names
\filename.

mode, which puts J directories under C:\Documents and Settings\[my user id]

backups: I want to name my backup directory differently according to the
machine on which I'm running.
I use my own whoami, which simply invokes the OS version of this command

I've been using a verb dir, as a cover for 1!:0@, which I now find
shadowed by a definition in stdlib.ijs. This new version provides much
less convenient output - a simple text matrix rather than the useful boxed
output of the older, simpler use of the foreign conjunction.
