I would like to get ColdFusion MX to dump a SQL query into a
downloadable excel file. I've done research and found lots of custom
tags on Macromedia Exchange but I haven't been able to make any of them
work with CFMX.

htm or .html (whichever you like) that looks identical.
All .htm (or .html) will then be parsed through the CF engine
Open up IIS, and click on the properties of the website in question. Click
on the home directory tab. Then click Configuration. Copy the path used in
the *.cfm mapping and create a new mapping for *.html that points to the
same executable as the *cfm path. That should do it
