Oh please do underestimate me. There are plenty of things that have
not worked that I attempted.
I am not sure how this thing works, but it is a little quirky. You
must have contact with the item being soldered in order for it to heat!
I read a review, done by MSNBC I think, in which an

Congratulations, you are promoted to hacker first class :-).
Seriously, that was well executed.
What was on the drive? Just curious.

Good work!
Where's the step by step how-to video?

Looking at Figure 3, I would think that the PCB could just be shoved into
a USB socket.
Look at the photo of the iStick at

I bought a cheap USB HUB at Walmart. Took the cover off, and snipped
off the wires (saved me from having to cut a perfectly good cord,
plus price was the same)
Took the reinforced end off, and peeled back the cover of
I have been given a chore.
The JROTC department at the local high school has a USB flash
drive. Somehow the end (Connector) of the Flash drive has been
broken off, and they need to recover the contents of the flash drive.
What I have considered doing is opening the Flash Drive, and getting
it sounds like it should work
keep us posted on how it goes.

I finally had a chance to take the flash drive apart.
The connector was literally taken off the board.
I might be able to solder the contacts, connector back on to the
board itself and get it to work. I will sit down when I have the
time to do this and not feel rushed.
Otherwise I will
I googled fix broken Flash drive and here is a wonderful website that
gives me the info I needed.

Would that it be so easy.
This one pulled the contacts straight off the PCB and all that is
left is spots where the contacts were soldered.
I have salvaged all the contacts, so will attempt to solder them back
on (after having soldered the wires to them) and connect it, get the
data off of
If you heat that chip up, there is a chance you may wipe the memory...
I am not sure but I would think twice about soldering directly...
Have you thought about holding probes firmly to the contacts while
someone else salvages the data?
