Bush may have the backing of Wall Street and the American media, but capturing the hearts of conservatives and the attention of the English press is Alan Keyes. His fiery oratory and uncompromising convictions are resonating with voters in a way not seen since the days of Ronald Reagan. There is more at stake here than meets the eye. Alan Keyes offers Republicans an opportunity to repudiate business as usual. He challenges the status quo and forces us to look beyond our pay stubs. It is a classic substance versus style campaign. While preaching fiscal conservatism and family values, the Republican Party has largely been little more than a watered down version of the Democrats. An attendee at the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference was quoted by Conservative News Service as complaining, "They (Republican leadership) need to stand for something, but all they care about are their own jobs." The CNS article continues: "Are we Republicans or are we conservatives?" That is the question this election is going to answer. A Washington Times story of two days ago reports, " Mr. Bush did not mention abortion Saturday as he addressed voters at a rally in Davenport on the 27th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade decision. The omission did not bother Bill Irey, an orthopedic surgeon who lives in Davenport. "âThatâs low on my list,â Mr. Irey said. âI think thereâs a large number of Republicans who look at that with interest but arenât going to have that be the determining factor.â "Mr. Bush âwell represents the core Republican values,â Mr. Irey said." That is not the question, however. The question is, does Mr. Bush represent core conservative and constitutional values? Itâs a question many conservatives are asking. A recent Reuters article begins, "Self-described conservative Pat Rice does not like Texas Gov. George W. Bush, sees nothing in his agenda to recommend him and believes heâll be âjust the same-old, same-old." Enter Alan Keyes. Abortion, national sovereignty and traditional morality are high on his list. They apparently are high on a lot of peopleâs list. Many of us recognize that America cannot continue to ignore and impugn the fundamental values upon which our nation was built. A prosperous economy can evaporate overnight. There comes a time in the life of a decaying society when only commitment to fundamental principle offers any hope. We also usually allow others to express their own beliefs and do not do it for them as we cannot know what another person believes. NO ONE claims that the Bible is historical. The question is, how much of what is in the Bible is historical and how much is religious fiction. You also need to separate the OT from the NT when talking about the Bible because as historians and archaeologists of all stripes make more discoveries in and around the Middle East, the veracity of the OT is going up, while the veracity of the NT is going down. That is kind of interesting considering that verifying the historicity of the original Bible should be more difficult since it's stories are ( traditionally ) 2000 years older. On the other hand, you would think that the stories in the New Testament would be much more easily verifiable considering that the stories occurred fairly recently, and within and beside other cultures' written histories such as Roman, Jewish, Copt, Arab, etc. etc. I'm not talking about the theological or supernatural content of both Bibles. I'm talking about things like finding places that ceased to exist since biblical times, or writings of other cultures which corroborate historical figures, or descriptions of natural events which left their marks in the earth. I don't envy religionists at this point in time. It could happen at any moment. Some discovery will be made which will put some people's favorite mythology to rest. I see this as a good thing. Vladimir Putin, the 47-year-old, dour, ruthless former secret police chief who has just succeeded Boris Yeltsin as president of Russia, will make no move to ideologically reimpose communism in Russia. In the West, we might very well come to wish that he would. Instead, Putin is a striking expression of the gangster values, pervading cynicism, anti-Western nationalist sentiments and utterly ruthless implementation of policies that pervades modern Russia. He is the embodiment of the new criminal-syndicalist state, a system where big business has been forced to adopt the literal practices of gangsters to survive, because the structures and procedures of the rule of law are virtually non-existent. Putin has made clear that he will retain the basic, freewheeling free market structure of Russia. But in foreign policy, he looks set to confront the United States and the West far more vigorously -- and ruthlessly -- than any leader in the past 16 years since the death of his own personal hero Yuri Andropov, who masterminded a wave of murderous international terrorism against the West. He has not even pretended to have any "personal chemistry" with U.S. President Bill Clinton. When Putin met Clinton in Oslo in early November, he was confrontational and -- deliberately -- charmless. Clinton and his press spokesmen were so taken aback that in their descriptions of the meeting, they omitted all the usual rhetorical boiler plate about "the chemistry was good" and "friendships remained strong" even if there was disagreement on every issue. Putin is no "phony tough." He really is tough. He reflects the obsession by the brutal and ferociously anti-Western wave of new nationalists in Russia with implementing the principle of U.S. President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt - "Talk softly and carry a big stick and you will go far." As prime minister, Putin already publicly threw his weight behind rapidly rebuilding Russia's mighty Strategic Rocket Forces, which even through the collapse of Soviet and Russian power have remained the most deadly nuclear strike force in the world. He has approved confrontational stunts by the Russian armed forces such as plans to fly Tupolev Tu-22 Backfire bombers armed with nuclear cruise missiles to Cuba or Vietnam next year. He won the warm support of the Russian army's top general staff command for giving them the green light to crush the secessionist Chechens, regardless of the thousands of Chechen civilians who would die. Domestically, he may well unleash a repressionist terror that would have enormous public support. Tsars Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century and Peter the Great in the 17th century both became popular figures by crushing and humiliating the boyars, the detested corrupt wealthy merchant class of their times. Putin would enjoy similar overwhelming public support if he took such actions against the billionaire oligarchs who have amassed enormous financial, energy and media empires over the past decade while the living standard of ordinary Russians has collapsed into impoverishment. Putin already has a powerful political coalition behind him. The pro-government Unity bloc won a stunning 23 percent of the vote in the parliamentary elections just 12 days ago. The Union of Right Wing Forces led by his old political mentor, former Kremlin chief of staff Anatoly Chubais, won nearly 9 percent in the same election. Chubais, in the words of analyst Dimitri Simes, president of the Nixon Center, ran a shamelessly strident xenophobic and anti-Western campaign, supporting Putin's policies in Chechnya. Since then, Putin has openly signaled his warm approval of Chubais. Ultra-nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who scraped back into parliament with 6 percent of the vote, will also support Putin. He has little choice. Zhirinovsky, who has threatened to obliterate Western cities with nuclear weapons if he should ever win power, cynically supported Yeltsin in every key parliamentary vote and was rewarded by having the pro-government television networks shower favorable publicity on him in the parliamentary election campaign. He will not hesitate to applaud any and all confrontational, anti-Western moves that Putin makes. Even the majority Communists will rally behind Putin on key issues, although they loathe his free market policies. But they already support him on Chechnya and on confronting the West. SCHMID WASHINGTON (September 9, 1999 6:30 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - An explorer searching for ancient shipwrecks found a large undersea field seeping natural gas off the coast of the Gaza Strip and Egypt. The discovery by marine geologist Robert Ballard was announced Thursday by the National Geographic Society, which sponsored his research. In June, a natural gas reservoir was found undersea off the Israeli city of Ashdod, north of Gaza, estimated to be able to produce 30 million cubic feet of gas per day. Ballard's discovery indicates the gas field extends south, along the full length of the Gaza Strip and the coast of Egypt. "That was just one hole," Ballard said of the Ashdod well. "If you were to exploit this field you would have many rigs ... so clearly it's sizable." But politics could complicate development of the field's natural gas. The Gaza Strip, along the coast of southern Israel adjacent to the border with Egypt, is jointly administered by Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Ballard said he has not been in touch with either the Israeli or Palestinian officials about the find, but is confident both know of it because an Israeli observer was on board his research vessel, along with Palestinian crew members. Moshe Friedman, spokesman for the Israeli Infrastructure Ministry, said Thursday that he had not heard of the natural gas fields and would not be able to comment without more details. On the same research trip, Ballard also located the wrecks of two ancient Phoenician ships, the oldest vessels ever discovered in the deep sea, dating from about 750 B.C. It was that search that led to the gas discovery, he explained. "It turned out that the Phoenician ships have a particular sonar signature," Ballard explained. "We were using sonar to get what we call an acoustic signature and ran around the ships at different angles." He said they would find a depression in the sea floor and something hard within the depression - the hard object turned out to be the ships. After the researchers finished their work on the Phoenician ships, they steamed along the coast to look for other sunken vessels. The sonar detected what appeared to be hundreds of ships. "We said, 'That can't be true,"' Ballard recalled. "So we sent the Jason vehicle down, which can actually see, and in these depressions were deposits caused by seepage coming in contact with ocean and rising from deposits was gas. I realized what we had found because I'm a geologist," Ballard said. "The bubbles expanded in size as they rose toward the surface of the sea," he added. The long narrow depressions were probably associated with cracks in the earth that create a way for the gas to escape from underground reservoirs, he said. Ballard also reported finding concentrations of tube worms and beds of clams surrounding the vents. These were similar to those he found surrounding hydrothermal vents near the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific, he said. The Galapagos worms marked the first discovery of living things that used chemical energy rather that relying on the sun for energy. Ballard, president of the Institute for Exploration in Mystic, Conn., is a longtime ocean explorer, probably best known for locating the wreck of the Titanic in the cold, dark waters of the North Atlantic. There are some who believe the Vatican is actively involved in behind the scenes discussions on the status of Temple Mount. We have observed that everytime PLA Chairman Yasser Arafat signs an agreement with Israel he heads to the Vatican to meet with the Pope within 24 hours. These meetings have happened at least three times in the last four and a half years. And has had at least an additional three meetings with the Pope in the last six years. These meetings and the relationship between the Pope and Arafat are of much interest. The Vatican has also been outspoken about the status of Jerusalem. The believe it should be the capital of the Jews, the Christians and the Arabs. Israel does not agree and said they will not share it with anybody.
