We have been invited to the Pre Budget meeting again. The meeting will be
on Monday we have to write a document like last year.

I've attached what we presented last year. If there are new developments
you would like to add, like datasets or policies that need to have an open
data perspective that would be helpful.

If you have any editions please add them to this thread.

Thej will be representing us this year.

Description: Adobe PDF document

[datameet] [group business] I'm leaving India on Jan 4th :(

2017-12-03 Thread Nisha Thompson
Dear All,

I'm sad to say that I'll be leaving India for good on Jan 4th. It was not
an easy decision, but I've been in Bangalore for 7 wonderful years and feel
it's time to head back to the US.

I'm so proud and happy to be apart of this community, while I won't be able
to do offline events and work anymore, I'll continue to moderate the Google
Group and assist with any online work.

Over the past 6 years we have been at the table for most data discussions
and that reflects a lot about how we have been able to build a solid
community of people. We have managed to run events, campaigns, free data,
build resources, and do policy work; for a group like ours the list of
accomplishments is profound considering we are just a community of
volunteers with no money.

A few years ago the stress of dealing with all the asks of us, made THej,
Anand, and I take a step back and evaluate what we were trying to do. The
decision to not raise money and to continue as volunteers was difficult but
necessary given that we wanted to continue to concentrate on freeing
essential data important to the community not trying to run around and
collect money for projects that don't meet everyone's needs.

For the past year we have concentrated on policy work, partnerships, and
geospatial data. The community wants shapefiles we have worked to get them
and make them open. While there has been delay we will have a complete
village shapefile set in the public domain soon. And as we continue on we
will do urban areas as we go along. This is a major accomplishment for us.
And as the work winds down and me transitioning out it is a good time to
take a look at what we should concentrate on next.

We have created a survey to start collecting ideas. If you have some time
this week please fill it out:

https://goo.gl/forms/APbUYf9TyY2bcmgP2

What started out as a place to complain about Indian data has really become
a family to me and has made my time in India really special.

Thank you all for being awesome. I know this community will continue to
thrive.

I will miss everyone dearly.

Came across this story. Intel and Karnataka are going to collect data on

lot of makign the data open, or the privacy issues.

ALso since karntaka doesn't have a data portal where would they put this
data?

[datameet] Anyone wants to help with Water Quality Data and Open Data?

2017-11-06 Thread Nisha Thompson
Craig and I have been doing some research on the use of water quality data
and how opening it can add value.

It is largely a jump off of the Global Open Data Index
<https://index.okfn.org/>water quality assessment. The goal was to see how
groups using water quality data in projects would benefit from open data.

We interviewed NGOs from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal about their
projects and data usage and if assessing data availability would help their
work.

Out of this research we realized the limitations of open data to those
working in implementation. But there is still quite of bit that can be done
to make the data released by the government more substantial and useful to
those who aim to improve government services and implementation.

I've attached the report please feel free to read and comment.

There are several projects that we are looking to start that ground groups
would be interested in having if anyone wants to help please let me know
and we can start working on them. They are listed in the document.

THe next phase of the work iwll look at creating transparency at a system
level. What does an integrated water management system look like from a
transparency and accountability level? What data do you need? How would
people like to receive this information? how do you make it understandable?

If anyone wants to help just message me and we can look at this together.

Re: [datameet] Everything that is being done Badly is a Job opportunity in India

2017-09-21 Thread Nisha Thompson
I think about this constantly and am outwardly angry at the current gig
system evolving here turning a generation of smart capable people into
drivers and delivery people, who are overworked and underpaid.

You don't need college degrees and English to collect data, to work on
problems, to solve things, to map, to monitor, to build companies and
opportunities. You need a bit of money, a lot of trust, and genuine
interest.

I am frustrated with this dashboard, platform bullshit, where everyone is
willing to sink millions of dollars into tech but not into training and
hiring people and giving them jobs. Because giving people gainful, stable,
consistent employment with benefits and good wages isn't sustainable. Well
that is what works, that's what creates good customer service and products,
good implementation, and a healthier populace that has time and energy to
create more ideas, products and solve problems.

I don't know the answer it's a huge issue. I find it a good start to see
the Pune groups plan and also the work of multiple other people and groups
throughout the country who have been working for years on education and
skill building.

We were approached by a community college outside Chennai (my cousin works
there) about doing data skill building with their students (no one there
has an education level after 8th standard). But it fell through because i
didn't have time and also we had to line up employers. But it seemed
promising especially for data clean up. Converting pdfs now don't require
much programming knowledge, the college does basic computer and english
training with the students. We could do a few simple data clean up modules
and work with a few students to get their skill level up. But I didn't have
time to get employers who will hire them right away which was a requirement
by the college before we worked with them. Maybe we can look into it more
next year.

Hi All,

ODC is a few days away. The Agenda is shaping up. You can see it here:

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Open Budgets, and OpenCHS. We
aren't finished scheduling all the talks so stay tuned for the rest of the
schedule.

We would like to thank Mapbox India for sponsoring Happy Hour at the end of
day 1!

Day 2 will feature a short workshop on Privacy and Security, time for a
working group on the National Statistics standards and statistical policy
and a movie screening on Manual Scavenging. As well as any other ideas or
projects that people want to work on.

PLEASE REGISTER.

We had sold out once already and were able to open up more seats but we are
running out. We will only be counting registrations from Instamojo if you
signed up on Facebook or Meetup it won't be counted.

Re: [datameet] TIN numbers and commercial tax divisions

2016-10-21 Thread Nisha Thompson
That makes sense.

State by state is the only way then. RTI each state? Maybe they will have
the map. Each division office should have a list of associated villages
which the state department might have. Assuming village is the boundary in
rural area and probably pincode for urban like the karnataka map. If they
split up villages then it is super hard.

Is this something that the central government determines? Revenue amount or
geographic size etc?

Or is this a state determination and they just send the taxes up to the

up on. But more importantly we hope to have the most open and comprehensive
map of garbage blackspots to highlight the scope and severity of the
problem.

[datameet] [Bangalore] Data Party! Garbage Go!

2016-09-14 Thread Nisha Thompson
HI All!

DataMeet, Citizen Matters, and Mapunity have joined forces to start
creating open urban data that is actionable. While we know that data isn't
the only thing going to solve a problem as involved like garbage, usable
public data needs to be created and kept in the open. So we are launching a
monthly Data Party!

Sept 24th we are launching a month long campaign to collect location
information for Garbage blackspots.

Join us on Saturday in 3 locations (Koramangala, Indiranagar, and
Frazertown) to have tea and map some garbage. (Meet up places will be
announced soon.)

Event page is here:
https://www.facebook.com/events/922332437871981/

If you hate Facebook here is the sign up page:
https://goo.gl/forms/z701p2w1u5Jf0uoP2

<https://goo.gl/forms/z701p2w1u5Jf0uoP2>We need volunteer to get trained on
the app and how to help people map so if you want to be a point person
please email me and we will be scheduling a time early next week to do a
run through of the app and how we are going to troubleshoot some problems.

Thanks!

[datameet] [hangout] Ask us Anything: DataMeet edition with Thej, Anand S, and Nisha

2016-09-12 Thread Nisha Thompson
Hey All,

It has been 5 years and we are now at over 1500 members and we thought it
would be a good time to do an Ask Us Anything Hangout with DataMeet Central.

It will be September 20th, at 6:30pm.

We will be doing a broadcast Google Hangout will send the link out half
hour before.

Bring your thoughts and questions about DataMeet, data in India, things we
have done, things we should do, etc.

It would be helpful to have some questions beforehand so feel free to use
this thread to ask, if not you can ask during the hangout!

Hope to see you then!

Re: [datameet] Re: What do you people think about the new proposed Bill about Maps and Geospatial data

2016-05-05 Thread Nisha Thompson
We can't just respond. We need to build a coalition of partners and
businesses who are opposed.

We need to also write opeds and editorials on why this is a bad policy for
India and for economic growth.

Can we get a list together of businesses and organizations that use GIS and
build awareness on why this is a bad policy?

I think a small working group is important, let's organize this on here.

[datameet] Urban Data Portal - OpenCity.in

2016-04-15 Thread Nisha Thompson
We have been working with the team at Oorvani Foundation to open up more
data and expand OpenBangalore and make a multi city urban data repository.

OpenCity.in

We invite citizens and RWAs to share the public data they may have on
topics like civic, health, environment etc. Data can be local or city
level, like budgets, programme of works, expenditure reports, RTI
responses, DPRs etc. The site is currently in alpha, and volunteers from
across cities will be adding more data. For more information, contact
openc...@oorvani.in.

If you have a data from a different city we can add it also. There will
definitely be more data coming and also city documents. Please let us know
what you think!

[datameet] 2015 Catch up

2016-02-05 Thread Nisha Thompson
Hi All!

Last year we did a lot of things however we haven't been able to really
capture it all on teh blog. So we are pushing ourselves to get blogposts up
about all the events, talks, and achievements from 2015.

I wanted to highlight two things we have just blogged about.

1) DataMeet, RHOK and CIS wrote a letter to the organizers of Urban Hack
calling out privacy concerns:
-For the community this was a big deal as we have not really gone into
the privacy concerns of open data. However as smart cities and increase
awareness of data and open data there will be more hackathons and I hope as
a community we can assure privacy and security concerns are kept in mind.

2) Consultation with Sikkim regarding their open data portal
http://datameet.org/2016/02/03/sikkim/
-Sikkim's adoption of an open data policy was a great first step and their
move to be the first state with an open data portal is exemplary. We were
honored to be apart of the process.

If there have been any other events or accomplishments from last year
please feel free to reply and we can get a post up.

(Yes ODC BLR post is coming soon)

[datameet] Map Digitalization Effort

2015-12-17 Thread Nisha Thompson
Hi All,

There have been tons of threads on getting more local area maps. So lets
try to work together and get it done.

We started a github wiki to collect links to PDFs we have found that need
to be digitalized.

https://github.com/datameet/maps/wiki/Maps-we-found-that-need-to-be-digitalized
.

How should we do this? Who can help?

I think we do some skill sharing hangouts on how to digitalize if people
are interested and slowly work on freeing sets of maps.

What do you all think?

And about debian GNU/Linux distribution at :-

We are looking for sponsors as well as people who would like to share

We are looking for sponsors, while at the same time we have started
marketing the event at some colleges and schools.

We have already invited Nikhil for the event as the idea/problem he is
grappling is (public transport in Pune) is especially relevant to one
and all . I, also exclusively use public transport and ride-shares
where it is possible so if any improvement happens for public
transport, me along with millions of commuters will be the
 beneficiaries of it.

Because of shortage of funds, we are unable to invite people from
outside Pune but are considering Video-conferencing and other ways in
which ideas and implementations can be shared but only if they fit
under the free software and open data model and do have some copyleft
license to back it up as well.

In case, there are some potential sponsors, please mail me off-list
and we would be glad if you are able to sponsor individuals or/and
teams who are and might be doing awesome work using FOSS data models.

Look forward to your participation in the event. Please e-mail me if
 you have any further queries.

Where did this come from? Is this something Pune is interested in hosting?
Or you are asking them to?

I would suggest for contests to look at a good example of working with

I would also say that doing the whole system as a contest is a lot of work.
Would they have to design the entire web interface or just parts of it?

Re: [datameet] Re: flood alert system in India

2015-05-04 Thread Nisha Thompson
Hi

It is my understanding there is some alert systems in place but it is up to
the state to provide them. For instance during the Uttarkhand floods IMD
did alert the state, however, monitoring is poor and there aren't enough
weather stations.

Please see this report by SANDRP and Current Science
http://sandrp.in/DRP_June_July2013.pdf
http://www.currentscience.ac.in/Volumes/105/01/0007.pdf

THe live data out of the IMD weather stations would be ideal but IMD Is not
very forthcoming with the data we do scrape it but it is a day late.

There needs to be more weather stations the covering is actually quite
sparse there has been an effort to create non gov networks and that is
slowly taking off.

http://www.skymet.net/

They are doing fairly well.

You basically should be setting up more weather stations with live data
feeds.
