I have installed afterstep, and my wife was using it, but leter I added fvwm2, now she wants after step back, but I want to use fvwm2. K If you and your wife log on as distinct users with distinct home directories, then you can have different .xsession files. This file, if present, will determine what window manager is used. There is a default one somewhere under /etc/X11 that is used if it not present. To be a bit more explicit about what is needed, and what happens: When xdm starts a session (i.e. once someone logs in successfully) it simply executes the file /etc/X11/Xsession - this file does some standard things (involving setting X resources, among other things), and then, depending either on whether or not the user has a .xsession file in their home directory, exec's .xsession or exec's the default window manager (which will be the first window manager listed in /etc/X11/window-managers that exists). So, if a certain user wants to use a certain window manager instead of the default, they should create a ~/.xsession file with the line: exec afterstep (or 'exec fvwm2' or whatever) and make this file executable with chmod: chmod a+rx .xsession .xsession files can also be used to do certain setup things - start specific X programs each time one logs in, start ssh-agent (for those who use ssh), etc.; note that some of these setup parameters are often best left to the window manager, and the details on how to set up each window manager vary from wm to wm. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . RE: [comp.os.linux.hardware] Oracle on Linux
The fact is that SCO Oracle runs under linux using iBCS. This was a topic of discussion a while back in the Caldera list. The trouble with porting an application to Linux is a lack of standards. Different distributions bundle different versions of libraries, update their distributions at different times, users are always poking around in the configs. It would be a nightmare to support. The only way I see it happening is being bundled with a commercial Linux such as Caldera and not being supported if the user has deviated the machine from the standard platform. The only other way is some form of versioning that is adopted by all the major distributions. This would provide a known base configuration of certain vital libraries that a developer and support engineer could target. As it stands now, can you imagine the telephone calls from users ... Hi, my Oracle worked yesterday but now it is broken since I updated libcwhat do you mean 'put the libc back' ... your program sucks! And the company gets a bad name for producing a program targeted at a platform that changes weekly it seems. The problem with Linux is that nobody has control of the platform configuration. Official debian is a step in the right direction. Another step is for Debian consultants to support ONLY the Official configuration. I use ncpfs to mount it under a subdirectory (/zen), making the entire SYS: and DATA: volumes accessible from my Linux box. The location of the Post Office is under \\ZEN:\DATA\CCMAIL. I put an entry into wine.conf which maps the M: drive to the ccmail Post Office directory. I then run the 16-bit cc:mail program using Wine. cc:Mail loads up with very few complaints from wine - good! cc:Mail logs into the Post Office, and displays the main screen, showing the different folders - inbox, trash etc.. - better! I double-click the inbox folder to get a listing of my email. cc:Mail then informs me with a dialog box Not enough files to open window - aaarrrgh cough As I see it, it's to do with setting up the FILES=30 in MS-DOS config.sys. It looks as if the equivalent setting under Wine needs to be configured. I was under the (apparently false) impression that ksmbfs was sufficient if all you wanted was a smb client on the Linux box, that Samba was necessary only if you wanted a smb server. So what is the ksmbfs pkg for anyway? I think that the ksmbfs stuff got merged in samba a few versions back. In a fit of madness, I created a md device and moved the /usr file system to it. Everything runs fine, except I get an error during shutdown that /usr can't be unmounted. I would like to know how debian handles in a machine with two pentiums. = Are two cpus quicker then one in any situation. I mean does every = program run quicker. Generally any particular process will only run on one processor at a time, so particular programs won't run faster. Or look at tee which is in package shellutils. tee lets you redirect output from a process to a file, a printer, a terminal or whatever else unix thinks is a file. Or look at script, which is in bsdutils and will save both input and output to a file. Script is probably the easiest. Just type script, do you thing and when you're finished, type exit (or hit Ctrl-D) and you'll find the session transcript in a file called typescript (can change that with options.) Then you can look at that file and optionally edit it before printing it. Cheers, Joost -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Mail setup and configuration
I have successfully upgraded (I think) from Bo to Hamm. Thanks to all who offered advice and helped me along the way. My isp is icon.net. I can get mail out, but I don't think I'm properly configured. Can anyone offer detailed setup assistance, or point me toward it? Also, I have mail in /var/spool/mail/user . The system tells me it's there, but when I type 'mail' or 'mailx', it gives me the headers, but when I then type p to print the message, it tells me the messages are saved. It won't let me see them. I have looked at them by using 'less /var/spool/mail/user' where user is the username, and I can see that they are not empty messages. Can anyone offer some help? Thanks for any assistance. After installing both packages, do the following (as root): 1) Type: cd /usr/src/linux 2) Type: make config [make menuconfig also works, as does make xconfig in X] 3) Configure your kernel by answering the questions. 4) Type: make-kpkg --revision version kernel-image where version is the version number that you want to assign to the new package that you are building. One good scheme is to use your host name followed by a revision number as in hostname.1. 5) Install (using dpkg -i) the package in the file /usr/src/kernel-image-kernel version_version_arch.deb where kernel version is the version number of the kernel, such as 2.0.32 or 2.0.33; version is the version number from step 4; and arch is the architecture type of the machine you are using, probably i386. 6) You should save the /usr/src/linux/.config file. It contains the configuration of your newly created kernel, which you later can use to build new kernels. Simply place this file in /usr/src/linux/.config before using make-kpkg. 7) You can now remove the kernel-source package. a) Type: cd /usr/src/linux b) Type: make-kpkg clean c) Type: cd .. d) Type: dpkg --purge kernel-source-kernel version Brian -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . This package has been put together by Manoj Srivastava [EMAIL PROTECTED]. INSTALLATION NOTES: To use this package to create kernel-image packages, you need to get the kernel source (available from your favorite Linux archive), unpack your kernel somewhere. Preferably somewhere other than /usr/src/linux (more on this later). Before you go any further, please allow me to point out that you need to have a few other packages installed before you can compile your own kernels (it is difficult to compile anything without a compiler ;-). Firstly, you will need gcc, the libc development package (libc5-dev at the time of writing), and, on Intel platforms, bin86. [If you use the menuconfig target of make, you will need ncursesX.X-dev, and make xconfig also requires tkX.X-dev, and other packages these depend on] The packages suggested are: devel:gcc, libc5-dev, binutils, make, and, for intel x86 platforms, bin86 (non-intel platforms don't need this). interpreters: awk, which is contained in either the mawk or gawk packages base: gzip, shellutils, and grep. Of course, pretty gui front ends to kernel configuration require more packages, but they are not strictly essential (though quite nice really). For the Brave and the impatient: 1% cd kernel source tree 2% make config # or make menuconfig or make xconfig and configure 3% make-kpkg clean 4% make-kpkg -revision=custom.1.0 kernel_image 5% dpkg -i ../kernel-image-X.XXX_1.0_arch.deb 6% shutdown -r now # If and only if LILO worked or you have a means of # booting the new kernel. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!! Unpacking kernel sources: - On a debian system, /usr/src/linux always either contains include/{linux,asm} or points to a directory which contains those subdirectories, usually a directory with the full kernel source or a directory with just the kernel headers. Debian has standardized on /usr/src/linux being a link (that is the case if you install released debian kernel packages, and has been for a while now). If you like living on the edge and compiling your own kernel packages ;-), you have to follow the convention of letting /usr/src/linux be a link, and unpack the pristine kernel sources someplace else. Some of the suggestions about where to unpack the kernel packages are a) /tmp/linux b) /var/tmp/linux c) /usr/local/src/whatever d) /usr/src/linux-X.X.XX; where X.X.XX is the version number of the kernel. Remember to re-link /usr/src/linux to point to this directory, like: (cd /usr/src; rm linux; ln -s linux-X.X.XX) In any case, choose a partition that has a large amount of free space, since recent kernels, unpacked, run to about 23MB, and you need more than double that in order to create kernel-image, kernel-source, and the tar file (that is, if you choose to build everything together with the dist target in debian.rules -- say if you want, for whatever reason, to run dchanges on the files created). I needed nearly 60MB to create the full spectrum of packages for version 1.99.7 (and doubtless this size will go up in the future). Now, cd linux (wherever you have created the kernel sources). The version number is deduced from the kernel Makefile directly. to ensure that the version numbers are in sync(1), so you don't have to worry about that. It has been suggested that you renumber the revision number in such a way that a generic kernel image package will not override the custom package while using dselect (or dpkg -BOGiE). You may also do this on the fly by setting the DEBIAN_REVISION environmental variable. The revision number (the argument supplied after the --revision flag) has certain constraints: a) It only has an effect during the configure phase (in other words, if a file called stamp-configure exists, this option has no effect -- run
[OFF-TOPIC] Pentium II performance?
Hi, I know this is off topic, but I don't have access to cola (and newsgroups in general) and I feel more confortable asking here, because I want Linux specific answers. Ten days ago a professor here bought a Pentium II/233 system. He promptly installed Debian on it, and let me use it for my (thesis) work. First thing I did was to benchmark the thing using a program of my own. This program says a Pentium MMX/166 (my old pc) gives about 24 Mflop/s. A Pentium/100 is about 16 Mflop/s. If the numbers are accurate or not, is not in dispute now. What's important is the relative speed, and I find the numbers quoted to be reasonable. (For those curious, it's 3 sums, 3 multiplications, 1 division) The PII says 39 Mflop/s. Over the weekend, I bargained a PMMX/233, which says 33 Mflops/s. I don't find this this reasonable at all! Taking as a reference the performance leap from a 486DX4 - Pentium (same clock speed) I was kinda hoping something near 80 Mflop/s for the PII (yes, I know, it's silly to take that as a reference, but one can only hope) I know I'm not playing fair comparing the systems this way (different kernels, memory, chipset, ...) but I was hoping somebody could give better statistics on this. I'd really appreciate if somebody can help me on this one. We are planing to build a Debian-based compute farm, and the cost difference between PII's and plain Pentium's could translate into a big difference in the number of hosts installed. Side note: K5/133 = 9; K6/200 = 31; 486/66 = 4; RISC 9000 = 18; VAX 3000... oops, forgot about it, but it was surprisingly low. You can't. Instead, you need to install a pop3 server, such as cucipop or qpopper. Note that if you're running netscape on the mail server you don't actually need a pop3 server. More often than not this means being shackled to one vendor, and possibly left out in the cold completely if and when that vendor goes under. Also, heat is one thing, but disinformation is another. The author of this article proved himself woefully ignorant on several scores: he only mentioned the RedHat and Caldera distributions, and implied that one had to spend $50 to get good Linux. He also seems completely unaware that tech support for Linux can be purchased, if a company feels the need for that sort of thing. Finally I would submit that it has long since been the case that Linux is *not* a hobbie OS, used only geeks and X-Files fans. Debian people taking care of spam
Dear Users and Developers, for some weeks now we have protected our servers against spam via the Realtime Backmail List (RBL) provided by the folks from the Mail Abuse Protection System URL:http://maps.vix.com/. Since we're using Qmail as our Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) relaying is impossible. Since last week we're also reacting on spam and reporting abuse to the abusing party, their provider. For two days Igor Grobman has taken over the job as Anti-Spam Manager. He also informs abuse.net about spam and relaying.
