Re: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot 6?
SJ, Marc was only trying to help by pointing out that F-Prot has a different licensing scheme for mail servers than client machines. At one time F-Prot did not differentiate the two and a lot of us were using F-Prot with a much higher user count than even what the chart listed below. Than one day with no notice it all changed - and they even made a point to specifically point out using it under Declude. At that point the cost for most of us jumped through the roof. For several customers I consult for it went from $100 to well in excess of $5K. So needless to say we had to find alternated - and we were VERY thankful AVG was included in Declude. Marc's post (as I interpreted it) was to make sure you did not end up in a licensing bind as many others... This list is very friendly and helpful and we would like to keep it that way. I sent an email to F-Prot telling them that I am not renewing because of their price change. They replied back basically saying they didnt care and audios. They are going to lose a lot of customers. Just a comment on this Licensing thread F-Prot like all virus companies charge the extra $ because of the different process used when scanning email as opposed to regular scanning. Declude has this process and functionality built in to the Declude product which enables customers to use a command line scanners like ClamWin to scan their email in the same way, as virus companies mail server versions. Not to mention AVG which is built into Declude Security Suite, which hopefully customers will now begin to really understand the value and financial benefits to this integration. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing
F-Prot doesn't care. They don't do volume as a plug-in to mail servers, they do it through desktop software. F-Prot now has a software product for Exchange and their own spam and virus blocking gateway service offering. Considering how cheap the client is, losing those sales is insubstantial to them. It is true that they could have charged something more reasonable, especially considering that none of us are getting rich doing this stuff and every extra penny spent comes out of our pockets and not that of our clients, but so be it. Most probably wouldn't have paid anything more than a couple of hundred dollars for their product regardless, so $500 or $5,000 is all the same in effect. So it seems that market forces are not causing the price to drop. It is causing the price to increase. There are ever more players in the antivirus market but pricing continues to go up. The market force of absolute need for antivirus on the mail server is outweighing the number of companies supplying antivirus command line scanners. What is the breaking point. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot
Thanks, Glenn. Then I assume this is a case for your mileage may vary... Richard's case may be more similar to yours than mine. I don't use the realtime scanner on my server or workstation, but I do use the automated update. I installed it on my workstation so that I could test scripts and so forth, and also keep any eye on the update intervals. As of something like 3.16c, I don't have the must tell the GUI that it's okay for it to fail to fetch an update once in a while problem on the three machines I used to have that problem on (two W2K3 and one WXP). I did change the environment though, because to prevent issues on one of the servers, I instituted a scripted fetch of the updates for multiple times per day. The workstation continues to only use the F-Prot tool and GUI. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Windows 3.16 Update Missing F-Prot.exe
They certainly could have made it more noticeable, but From the Release Notes: The DOS scanner is now no longer installed on NT/2000/XP/2003. If version 3.16 is installed as an upgrade then the previous DOS version is removed. The DOS scanner is not suitable for use on the NTFS file system, now more popular as the result of increased use of Windows XP. The Command-Line Scanner (fpcmd.exe) should be used instead of the DOS scanner. - Original Message - From: Don Schreiner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 23, 2004 8:49 AM Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Windows 3.16 Update Missing F-Prot.exe I posted this to Declude.Virus, but apparently no longer subscribed and wanted to give folks a heads up here. Gotcha...didn't realize there was a difference. We have the Windows version and use the command line scanner that comes with it. As far as update scheduling goes, there are several links on the Declude Tools page and in this archive to schedule periodic updates of the signature files. We take the simplest approach and FTP and unzip the signature files hourly. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
This is a big issue for me because my second scanner is so wasteful in comparison to my first, and during larger virus outbreaks, there's a very clear spike in average utilization. I don't believe that this is being prioritized, so I suggest that you hold your request and repost it when Scott gets back...that is if it causes you any issues. I've given some consideration to writing a handler script myself that would do the same thing, but I haven't gotten around to it yet :) It certainly can be done though. I'd like to second this question. I remember seeing a couple of discussions here where people couldn't agree on which McAfee product to use as the command line scanner with Declude. And, of course, the online stores always emphasize the Windows-based products. So exactly which product is it that's needed? Re: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
See this post from a little while ago on the Virus list: http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg09001.html The only changes that I am aware of is that Clam-AV can approach F-Prot's efficiency if you run the daemon and AVG became a tiny bit slower after adding extra support for detecting encrypted archived viruses (they call it "conservative" detection). Everything else pales in comparison to F-Prot when it comes to speed. Since I'm blocking encrypted archives that contain a banned extension, detecting a few extra ones as viruses isn't that big of a deal (especially if I could turn off the bounce). If you're not using F-Prot already as one of two or more scanners, you really have only one choice IMO. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
My 1 year McAfee VirusScan Command Line license was $11 through CDW. I think only CLAM-AV can beat that price. On Sunday McAfee caught these that F-Prot did not catch: 1 Exploit MHTRedir 4 Exploit-ObjectData Trojan 2 W32 Bagle pwdzip (typically catches more of these) 3 Netsky P F-Prot caught 1 Netsky.P that McAfee did not catch. These are usually corrupt variants. McAfee 260 caught, F-prot 251. For the latter there is an outstanding request to Scott to kill additional scanning once a scanner detects a virus.. So right now if you use multiple scanners when you scan with ScannerA and it finds a virus Declude will still call ScannerB and have it scan as well? Scott pointed out that his McAfee was only $11.00 for the year so the price barrier is non-existant and I see from your and Scott's responses that there are indeed reasons to have more than one scanner. I did some benchmarking a few months ago and F-Prot was faster than everything else, and in many cases 4 times faster or more. You need to make sure that you use the 32-bit executable fpcmd.exe otherwise you will take a performance hit from the 16-bit operation of F-Prot.exe. Markus, The last f-prot update is from 12/01/2003 Our F-Prot Updater runs every hour at xx:20 o clock. Mail processing stopped at 11:43 pm. I set up a program alias that the F-Prot notifications email to. That in turn kicks off update.exe [the f-prot update program]. Nothing wrong for sure with scheduling the updates but this alias is kinda neat and it hopefully gets me the updates right off. -Nick Hayer Markus --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses by Declude Virus (http://www.declude.com)] --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list. Hate to sounds like the idiot butcould someone answer a couple questions on F-prot It anti-virus? Does in run at the server level? Does it run at the client level also, or only at client level? It is an anti-virus program that a lot of people use with Declude Virus, as it is reliable and very inexpensive. F-Prot can run both on servers and client machines (as opposed to many other AV programs that are set up not to install on servers). It comes with a minimum of 20 licenses, so a lot of people buy it to use with Declude Virus, but then use the extra licenses on workstations. -Scott --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses by Declude Virus (http://www.declude.com)] --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] f-prot
Ok, I do not see F-prot on the F-secure site at all, and F-secure antivirus is $80 for personal edition, $424 for the server edition, and I so not see mention of 20 user license.
