I'm experiencing a similar problem, Intel E8400 and Asus 3850 video
card, fglrx driver.
The ati driver works fine, installing the fglrx driver causes a black
screen (and what looks like) a hard lock-up on logout, switch user, and
when X is started. This is on Kubuntu 8.04.1 with all updates
As gnome-open $url works fine, I conclude that whatever it is that
handles .desktop files at fault.
gnome-open test.desktop does not do anything, as there is no MIME
handler for the type. Presumably, then, Nautilus is short-circuiting. So
Nautilus is at fault, by my judgement.

If I set in gnome-sound-system .wav to the same events and set sound
events of gdm then after login in GDM anyone can play any sound,

Bah. I've seen random freeze when opening specific directories, but only
with specific content (?), not eg. system directory. I had one directory

Thanks for the information. I'll have a bit more of a look at this
tomorrow, but just from first glance, evolution is creating a lot of
pipes. You also seem to have a lot of errors in your ~/.xsession-errors,
which don't all seem to be related to Evolution.

I don't actually use ubuntu, but based on what I'm seeing on debian
lenny, I would guess that the extra event is coming from acpi-support,
as it invokes 'acpi_fakekey $KEY_SLEEP' when it processes a sleep button
acpi event and finds that gnome-power-manager or klaptopdaemon is
