We have had mentoring programs in the past but most of the mentorage is done on
the
list mainly. Not everyone knows everything that happens on the code so asking
the dev list
allows to point more on the domains of the level of code.
For starter I would suggest to read on the wiki development pages including how
the code
is organized, and worked on.
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Development

Also try to compile the AOO version so your patches can be tested locally.

I think this has to do with the gmail service, sometimes it needs you to enable
extra
permissions on Google to be able to use their mailing server. Make sure that
you have
search and enable these features. That way your emails will be able to go
through with no
issue.

Re: Change color of menubar and docking area

is a bit Off-topic but I would love to see some of the toolbars gain better
costumizability by dragging to other regions. A specific example is the
color bar palette (View - Toolbars - Colors) and be able to have it on

Is there different kind of toolbars that just made them as compatible with

When I compare my system colors to the colors of OO, they are slightly
different, so I guess, they have to be set somewhere.
(But I couldn't find the source, neither in the installation folder on my
disk, nor in AOO's source code.)

I also wrote some code to change Personas and wrote a mail to the LO

 on LO and on OO.

Is is possible to change the color of the menubar and the docking area
 from an extension?

 This is what I tried:

I can get the menubar via the layoutManager:
 menubar = layoutmgr.getElement(private:resource/menubar/menubar)
but the menubar doesn't have a realInterface, which I guess I would need
 to change its style.

I searched the configuration for a value holding the color but couldn't
 discover one.
 C:\Users\Homer\AppData\Roaming\OpenOffice\4\user\registrymodifications.xcu

Is there maybe another file holding the configuration?

The color values are in StyleSettings. But as far as I know, they are
readonly and only reflect the settings of the operating system. You might
want to look whether the Personalization feature of LibreOffice (Firefox
Themes; Persona) gives you more options.

 Kind regards

Would you write a new module to AOO, giving it a new application like Calc

Is this some sort of Macro built using Base and Calc or through an
installable extension.

In any case, it would be great if we can get more information about what
your plan is.

Re: IMPORTANT: Board report second version.

2015-04-05 Thread Alexandro Colorado
Wow, it sounds so depressive, I would really want to sound it more
optimistic as more matter of fact. I think for a report is way too
emotional.

Just list what is being done (or not), is it still on planning stage, and
what it's being done to get it off planning stage into development or
execution.

Whatever the community finds consensus about should go in there (I will

Honestly I dont see why this bug couldnt be an extension, doesnt need to be
something done from source.

Thischanges drastically the way filters are used IMO. Maybe this would be a
WONT FIX.

An extension could simply do conditional styles based on it intercepting the
filtering results.

Google Summer of Code for Apache OpenOffice

2015-03-17 Thread Alexandro Colorado
Hi seems Google Summer of Code is in high peak nowadays, but I think if we are
willing to get some help we need to promote the program. I think a good
blogpost could be a good first step. Maybe some articles could follow up and
get the ball rolling.

At this moment I know we dont have any tasks that students can do but I think
a good think tank could get us to where we want to go.

A few month back there was a discussion about OpenOffice 5.0. Imacat also was
on a office suite (or spreadsheet) thinktank. These ideas could become small
projects for us.

Last year there was a CMIS project for AOO, I am not sure if it was finished
succesfully but would be good to hear the stories on what followed up and some
lessons learned.

Re: [DISCUSS][EXT] Submitting NetBeans plugin to Netbeans.org

2015-03-17 Thread Alexandro Colorado
That is great news, it ocurr to me that a video tutorial might be a good way
to get people excited about it.

I remember there were some demos done by Jurgen about how to use it. It was
pretty simple and also there was a feeling about porting this plugin to be
used by Python and other languages that currently have no GUI editors.

On Monday, March 16, 2015 08:46:21 PM Carl Marcum wrote:
 Hi all,

for inclusion in their plugins downloads.

I believe the plugin is now as functional for the current AOO version as
is was for Ooo when it was available on NetBeans.org here [1].

The current way of distribution of the binary has been linking to
different developers personal folders on people.apache.org as the
 latest updates are made.

This results in multiple updates to the wiki to point at different
locations as new updates are made. [2].

As updates are made lazy consensus could be used to update netbeans.org.

One alternative would be for AOO to distribute the binary with other
 downloads.

 Thanks,
 Carl

you should contact all mail archive owners who are subscribed to this list

 What’s the owner address?
There are NO owner, there are many and none of them are controlled by

the subscriber list (which on this list is around 500 addresses).

What you need to do is search the web to see where you email appear, check

Please do remember all those who have received your email is intended

I can only advice to be careful when you write to a public mailing

Re: Need to integrate OpenOffice writer in java project

2015-03-13 Thread Alexandro Colorado
You can use the AOO engine as a service which allows you to do this on
a browser. The efforts to embed AOO in a Jar are usually very slow,
and not really as reliable.

Using webservices that consume OpenDocument format are also a good way
to approach this. But the UI needs to be builted.

Here is an indepth tutorial to use Dojo (a similar library to JQuery)
to build web based user interface while at the same time use AOO as
the engine for the calculations etc.
http://www.javaworld.com/article/2077861/open-source-tools/web-based-spreadsheets-with-openoffice-org-and-dojo.html

There are other projects that are more free to do a wiki like: www-at-odf.
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/ODF@WWW

And other webproducts that use/read ODF:

Subject: Updating the wiki theme.

I would like to update the wiki theme to the one that we use on the
homepage. ATM the wiki theme uses the very old OpenOffice.org, we are
   going
4-5 years in Apache and still have the same look and feel. I would
 like
   to
get a new theme on the wiki for current style.

Did you find the sources you need, otherwise drop me an email, and I
 will
   copy it to you directly.

First step should be to 'create' a theme that can be hacked and
 tested.
Then change it to the default by the wiki admin. The old wiki would
  still
be available and enabled by users that preffer the old one, but new
  theme
could become the default once reaching a functional style.

I am not soo keen to have multiple themes active on our production
 wiki,
  I
spent quite some time removing all other themes than the AOO one.
 Having
   multiple themes gives 2 problems:
   - a security problem, if we are not very careful (I will not detail
 this)
   - a graphic layout problem, it turns out our setup is very sensitive to
small changes like another font, and some of the pages tilt when you do
   that.

You should also be aware that in order to keep our current theme
  running, I
needed to patch some of the core code of mediawiki, it would be nice
 if a
   new them could avoid that.

I suggest you make yourself a test instance of mediawiki (I can provide
what you need of setup info, incl. a dump of the SQL), develop your
  theme,
once you have it, make a couple of screenshot and get acceptance in
 here.

Once it is accepted I am happy to take it, verify it, and install it on
  the
   production system.

Sounds like a plan to you ?

Well that's an issue since like you specify this code is not 'generic'
 so
I wont have details of what it needs to be applied to the production
 wiki.

Well you do need a test installation anyway, where you test your code.

I would rather access a snapshot, or a duplicated VM temporarily until
 the
work is done. However the development would be done in a closed fashion
which is not the ideal scenario.

Infra cannot provide a temporary VM just for this purpose, making that
would include DNS, LDAP, Puppet so at least the work of a little day.

I can (as I already suggested) provide you a SQL dump. I can also dump the
application, allthough it will most likely not run on your vm, due to
dependencies of a number of other programs.

May I suggest, that you make a naked installation of mediawiki somewhere,
build the theme, and let me put it on production. There are basically no
need to have our pretty complex production environment just to make a new
 theme.

Last time I worked with the theme, I did it exactly like that.

Also would be nice if you could detailed the most obvious pitfalls to
 know
how to get around it. The reason why you need to change code is mainly
because Monowiki theme also suffered version changes, and our original
theme was based of an older version of the monowiki theme. This scenario
 is
kind of unaviodable, unless is started from scratch.

You might be right about the version changes, but I am not convinced, since
I had the same problems when I tried to update the theme code.

I cannot detail the pitfalls for 2 good reasons:
 - I have forgotten most of what I did (it is in svn) and why I did it
 - Most of the things I simply did with try-test methods, I tried at that
time not to understand too much of why the theme was so mega complex.

I think we would benefit from a clean theme based on the newest version.

BTW I found this Changelog from the Wiki which I guess it needs to be
updated/reviewed:

to a single dummy page saying unsupported.

Not sure thats a good idea. I mean we already have https working perfectly
for most people. Why should we have everyone get an unsupported message?

  Then:

  1) I also get (Firefox) the warning about This website does not supply
identity information; I didn't investigate this one.

  2) We still load components from HTTP. Marcus, the Net panel in Firebug
will show you the URLs to all components. You will see that starting
 with a
  404 (?) for http://www.openoffice.org/images/formElementDropShadow.
png?2011060812 you have a series of action buttons that are all included
via HTTP. This is because lines 56- of
  https://www.openoffice.org/home.css
  contain explicit HTTP links.

You may fix it (but I would need to check the CSS syntax for the url()
  parameter) by:
  - Using /path/to links as Ariel suggested
  - Using // URLs (e.g., //www.openoffice.org will point to
https://www.openoffice.org when called in a https page and to
  http://www.openoffice.org when called in a http page) ; I'm not a big
 fan
of this solution, I would prefer the former one.

All of this would anyway fix an undocumented, unpublished URL that we
 make
available just to please people (remember, this is a static HTML site
 with
no interactive server-side functionality or logins).

Updating the wiki theme.

2015-02-19 Thread Alexandro Colorado
I would like to update the wiki theme to the one that we use on the
homepage. ATM the wiki theme uses the very old OpenOffice.org, we are going
4-5 years in Apache and still have the same look and feel. I would like to
get a new theme on the wiki for current style.

First step should be to 'create' a theme that can be hacked and tested.
Then change it to the default by the wiki admin. The old wiki would still
be available and enabled by users that preffer the old one, but new theme
could become the default once reaching a functional style.

Please comment.

If someone wants to suggest a disclaimer that can be put on all the

into many languages (all these pages are part of the standard set we
translate for NL pages) it would be good to get final agreement before
 we make any more changes.

Why not just take it down, and re-publish it when there is a more
agreeable content on it.

you can simply comment on the bug, and provide patches. Once you do a few
times your role will be bumped and more features would be enhanced.

If you did this already then please reffer to the patch and a
mantainer/tester might take a look at it.

the contents of the folder system it would be much appreciated.

If there isn't, what would be your best suggestion for navigating the code?

Re: Reporting a problem with the OpenOffice Wiki

2015-02-19 Thread Alexandro Colorado
This technica information is usually on our wiki, however what you are
asking is a bit too specific. I think you should provide a sample
document with large set of unicode to be able to test it.
AOO uses the IBM developed ICU4C (International Component for
Unicode), more information here: https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/ICU

Looking on our Issue trackers, I couldnt find any issues related with
large sets. So my guess is that you shouldnt have any substantial
issue.

Moving code from oooforum to mwiki

2015-02-17 Thread Alexandro Colorado
Just to inform the community that works with Python, I am in the process of

Same is going with other sites and tutorials. I encourage people that want

I've been updating the stats occasionally, using the scripts here:

 https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/devtools/aoo-stats/

Only the querying from SourceForge is automated. The update of the
CSV file that produces the chart is still manual.

If you want to give it a try, I'm happy to answer any questions.
Otherwise it is easy for me to update this.

Well I have two, one was for the final URL that the script needed from
Sourceforge?
The other question is related, but as I look on SF API seems this is for a
single file download, and I wonder how to concurrently do all of the files
from the release.

However, I tried this with the detail-by-day.py script which required the
SF URL, however if this script you showed me dont need any arguments (URL
or date limits) I guess it would be fine.

I tested the get-aoo-stats.py but also ask me for a list of URLs (I assume
these are for each file from the release). If you can provide a sample dump
for the current release, it would be good enough for me.

get-aoo-stats.py
syntax: python get-aoo-stats.py urls.lst iso-date [iso-date]
where file.list is a list of files URL's to gather stats on,
and iso-date is a date of interest, in -MM-DD format.
If two dates are given this expresses a range of dates.

Have you tried to manually open them from OpenOffice?
1. Open Openoffice Writer.
2. Go to File - Open
3. Select the filetype (doc, docx).
4. Go to the directory with your files, and open them.

I am available, if the community wants me as chair (and PMC) without time
 limit.

I promise to do the chair duties as defined by ASF, everything else depends
 on the PMC.

I think Dennis will make a good chair/PMC, he is a lot better connected to
AOO than me while I am relatively well connected within apache (have a look
 at people.apache.org)

Just avoid any misunderstandings, LABS (which is a very very silent
project) elected me as chair earlier this month and I am also spending
 hours developing Corinthia.

I prefer not to enter into a debate about the qualifications of Dennis and
me, the community knows us both (I have not changed since I resigned).

I hope our community get a working PMC with a lot more activity.

I have to second your nomination, I know your work and I know that you are
very focused on improving the open source community. Also that you are very
invested with communities beyond the OpenOffice one, and have helped in
infra for Apache. You are more than qualified to be n the PMC since you
have a great deal of knowledge on how Apache as a whole works. I do however
want to turn this into a question, what makes you go deeper into OpenOffice
and if you will have enough time to complete whatever task you will take
upon. However this is not to challenge your nomination just make sure that
there is a plan and vision with having this position.

RE: [DISCUSS] Qt as a replacement for VCL

2015-01-15 Thread Alexandro Colorado
In 2007 Nokia people were interested in taking this, they were pushing
mobile technology and having an office suite in Qt with the brand awareness
of OpenOffice.Org was a competitive advantage for their platform. I always
offer an open venue to get their sentiment relayed to some core sun
developers, however never really got a

details between VCL and Qt's widgets.

Maintaining the independently-developed VCL GUI framework is an

The problem with much of the complexity of AOO, it seems to me,
is that it is difficult to find improvements that can be
achieved with progressions of small changes that have every-
think still working each step of the way. Combined with the
level of expertise required to know what changes are safe
and consistent with the architecture of AOO, there is a big
challenge for identifying any major moves.

It would be great to know what insights there are for
cultivating and sustaining the necessary expertise and
maybe simplifying the learning curve and entrance
requirements. Maybe just keep doing more of what is
already being done in this area?

Something I started thinking about and ta da...it's been proposed before --

 http://markmail.org/message/gjvwudqnzejlzynz

In my mind, we could use some assistance in the maintenance of the
toolkit for our UI instead of continuing to do it ourselves. This said,
I know next to nothing about QT and from what I've seen, the licensing
is pretty complicated and might not work for the ASF --

  http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/licensing.html#licenses-used-in-qt

 orcmid
I finally noticed and followed the markmail link above. Of course,
in January 2009, all of OpenOffice.org was under LGPL and the license
was not a concern for the open-source side of things. The private
commercial licensing of OO.o by Sun (e.g., to IBM) would have been a
   concern.
The dependency on what continued to be a pretty closely-held project
might have been a concern even then.
If The Document Foundation had decided this was a good idea, the
prospect of an ecumenical accommodation with LibreOffice would be even
stranger today than it already is [;).

This is not an official resource of the project, so the project is trying
to help simply as a benefit to existing users. Edward, who owns the domain
name, was cooperative and we had a brief exchange of e-mails a few months
 ago.

The outcome, with no need of dedicated discussions, is that the best
 solution is:
 1) Edward keeps the oooforum.org domain name, since it has historically
 been his
 2) We agree that Ed will point oooforum.org to something like
forum-archive.openoffice.org (the name is made up, but I mean something
 under Apache control)
 3) Ed provides Apache with a full database dump and a full files tree for
the phpbb installation now powering oooforum.org
 4) oooforum.org remains as a public archive, but gradually we encourage
people to post to forum.openoffice.org (a neutral resource, but on Apache
infrastructure and under control of the project)

If Ed agrees with this, we can surely implement it reasonably quickly. But
we will need action from his side for item #3.

Agreed and maybe he is under a lot of work. My question here is if he ever
got back, were there further outreach? And is it possible to share the
admin credentials with an AOO contributor like Andrew P. I heard he already
did an rsync of the site but was too large to hold on his client. Maybe AOO
could share a space to rsync there as a read-only. And then perform some
cleanup to tag spam posts and delete the pages. 100G should do it IMO.

Is a rough estimate and yeah 100g will be a good 4 to 8 days. But a, I
don't think it will come to 100g and b, the process will be between servers
so it shouldn't be an issue.
I could rent a vps with 100g for 4 days but then it would need additionally
4 more days to transfer to apache. If I put it on my lame dsl it might take
10x more.

This would not be an issue in itself. Yes, it would be good to preserve
the old links, but preserving knowledge is better. So if we can get the
dump and files from Ed we can setup the forum at Apache and give it a
 new URL.

wget doesnt preserve the links but do an html copy of the old website,
basically what you are asking from Ed. The thing is that anyone can do
this, using a simple: wget -m (mirror) oooforum.org. Of course
oooforum.org currently gives you a godaddy page.

My original question was if there was a follow up after your request?

Everything else is pure speculation until then, so let's not start to
waste time discussing the required disk space and bandwidth until we are
sure that the data transfer can actually happen. And no, wget is not an
option, we want the full database and files, so that we will be able to
reinstall the forum at a new URL and then proceed as we will agree.

Andrea.

Problem is that it was not able to package up what was needed so that it
could be downloaded. I have plenty of storage to have been able to download
 it.

I did a scrape of the pages, and it is about 8GB last time I did it. Off
hand, I expect that a huge chunk of that is SPAM, especially since most of
the SPAMS have large graphics included. I considered writing a PERL script
to clean that based on certain search criteria, but, it just feels like a
huge annoyance to spend hours removing posts and then trolling the rest of
the files to rearrange all of the links so that things continue to
function. So, I did not start the clean-up process from my scrape.

Take Bitcoins donations

2014-11-22 Thread Alexandro Colorado
I know this is not the best list to talk about this since, well, is more of
an Apache thing than OpenOffice. However Mozilla Foundation just partner
with Coinbase to take bitcoin donations. Wonder if this could be an idea
that could pick up with the Apache Foundation.

Bitcoin is the most prevalent cryptocurrency out there, and would be
interesting to have the venue to acquire them. The biggest convenience is
that flows more freely around the world without major barriers from country
to country.

Nice! Is there a pointer to an easy and complete description of how to
swap out the 18MB masters/background for Nick's improved version? I'm
still lost when it comes to bulk formatting changes in Impress.

The command line way is simple/direct:

 1) Unzip the ODP file to disk

 2) Look for any large image files

 3) Load the large image files into an editor and reduce
resolution/color depth, increase compression, whatever you need to do
 to make it smaller.

I would recommend using vectors like SVG or indexed PNG instead. If
you want to keep it ODF-like, maybe do the design on ODG.

 4) Save image file back to same name/same directory.

 5) Zip up the directory, renaming it to and *.odp extension if needed.

AFAIK there are issues with zipping an ODF file. I remember this was
reported on some ODF blog since the way WinZip ad other programs zip
by default is not 'standard' with ODF editors. Might need to google it
again, but it just jump into mind.

ODF files are just ZIP archives containing XML + binary resources like
images. So they are very hackable from the command line, once you
 unzip them.

 Here are the needed informations.

Thanks. And after lazy-lazy-lazy consensus, this is now online at the

Re: [Website] System requirements

2014-11-05 Thread Alexandro Colorado
what would be a good requirement, I dont think AOO has escalate it's
memory demand since 3.0. I think performance still more or less the
same. But feel free to run some benchmarks. I am sure a Virtualmachine
can emulate 512 environments.

My Netbook (512 MB) ran AOO 4.0 decently, I dont think it would have
been that different with 256 RAM.

I think a friend also has a RaspberryPi (512 MB) and run AOO decently,
is not the fastest but is workable.

 Should we update this page?
 XP is end-of-life since april
256 Mbytes RAM (512 MB RAM recommended) seems to be outdated also

I agree, also some of the native distros builds need help:

Debian: http://sourceforge.net/projects/apacheoo-deb/files/debian/
Fedora: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/ApacheOpenOffice

 This for FreeBSD 10.1-PRERELEASE amd64.

Good to know! We should give more visibility to these initiatives, like
short blog posts with these small news that will be easier to find than
 mailing list archives...

Re: EMBEDDING YOUTUBE INTO IMPRESS

2014-10-30 Thread Alexandro Colorado
That said maybe is a good conversation to have. JMF was a broken solution
from is inception by having a deprecated product plugged into AOO for
political reasons because Sun needed to find a Java solution.

Novell replace this in Go-oo with gstreamer, however other engines like
libvlc or maybe more licence compatible solutiosn can work at the moment.
Not to mention JMF license might be incompatible atm.

Probably a feature to consider for 5.0.

 Objet: EMBEDDING YOUTUBE INTO IMPRESS

Good afternoon, I have tried unsuccessfully to add a you tube video
 to a simple

off the top of my head project just to have it done, nothing special. I
 have gone to

the Oracle site installed jmf software. Now for some reason I still
 can't get the

video to embed in the presentation... I added a sample video from the
 library that

comes with Windows 7 32bit, so I know it can be done but, a video embedded
 from

 YouTube

Is it possible how is it done?

 Bruce

 Hello,

First, let me introduce myself by saying that my name is Antonio Cepero,
from Spain and that I am coursing a Master on Free Software at the UOC

One of the works I must do in one of the subjects is an interview with a
free software project collaborator. I am contacting you because I am an
OpenOffice user and think it is a very interesting project. I would like to
know if some OpenOffice collaborator would be kind enough to answer the
questions found below. I shall be pleased to receive your answers but if
you do not want to, I would also appreciate to know it.

 Yours sincerely,
 Antonio Cepero

Can you state your name, the open source project you collaborate with and
 the tasks you perform?

How long have you been involved with the project?

What were the main reasons that led you to participate in it?

Had you worked on other projects (FOSS) prior to engaging in this? What
 experience led to this collaboration?

Do you currently collaborate with other free software projects? What? What
 work done?

What is your training and experience? Have you worked on projects that are
 not open source?

What influence has had or you think may have this collaboration in your
 professional future?

Thank you for your time answering them

oooforum status?

The conversation kinda went away and wonder what was the resolution
about the oooforum and if there is any hope to recover the database at
least to get some kind of plain browsable dump of the content.
