hi Jim,
the parameters with which you can evaluate your icon are graphical
concreteness, functional appropriateness, and its cross cultural sensitivity
(colors, understanding, and so on). There is a lot of work on cross cultural
design, and symbols. check out the following on icons from Oracle
Pie menus appeared on workstations sometime in the mid-1980s and there
was quite a bit of early interest in pie menus since they
theoretically reduce travel time to menu items. There is an earlier
paper that compared pie with linear menus from the U of Maryland:

I thought I'd list myself as a freelancer on Guru.com, and was
surprised and distressed to find that interaction design, user
experience, usability, etc. etc. aren't among the many categories
you're allowed to select. Does this just reflect some ignorance on
the part of the Guru.com
Has anyone here heard of any studies or research that has been done to
determine why many people have an aversion to making deposits at ATMs?
Is it a fundamental distrust of handing money to a machine, or are there
deeper issues involved?

I've encountered this problem almost universally, through every type
of site that allows you to list yourself as available for work. It
seems to stem from the fact that the US Government has an official
list of occupations that everyone uses to categorize all jobs. I
always find it

Hi, Evan,
I don't see any studies, but I did used to work Customer Service for
Bank of America, so I have a good deal of anecdotal evidence.
I think the only reason that people ever gave me was that they were
afraid the deposit would get lost. That does unfortunately happen,

How about a little empathy for these middle managers? You're asking for a
ton of trust to just say give me a budget and you'll get something great at
the end--don't worry about what happens in between.
No one in their right mind would do this, but it doesn't mean your point is
accurate.
I'm working on a product (toolbar) for a client that requires a download.
Has anyone done any research or have anecdotal evidence regarding
registration and download order? Are folks more likely to download if they
register (one short form) first, or more likely to register if they download
first?
from my personal study...
I had an issue recently where I deposited a Citibank check to a BoA a/
c via ATM.
The check was from my roommate who's been giving me checks for months.
The check showed in my account as pending and took 10 days to clear.
I eventually got a letter saying that the

Not using an ATM for deposits is not entirely illogical. In very
early ATM days, I made the mistake of depositing cash and was later
told that I'd deposited an empty envelope. In that case, there was
really no recourse for me; it was strictly an I said/They said issue.
Many years later, I
I feel like we're off the beaten path or, rather, beating an entirely new

This sentence cracks me up.
Glad we got all that figured out.

Hi all, I'm looking for sources about TV OSDs (on-screen display). Any
particular experience on design, case-studies, technical specifications,
user experiences, books or any relevant material is appreciated. We are
going to develop an OSD to be used on LCD TVs ranging from 19'' to 52''.

Hi,
As a designer who maintained ATM interfaces of a leading bank in Turkey for
more then 2 years, i can easily say that its all about technology, easy of
use and marketing. Finance is one of the heaviest competition field in
Turkey and companies heavily invest in technology. ATM and web banking
I'm tired of this EGOfest - go ahead design what you want - you may

The idea would be to reduce the travel time using a mouse or pointing device for
menu selection - as one might predict using a GOMS model.
I saw it implemented on a Sun Workstation.

This is from research done by Jinkook Lee an Ohio State professor of

Even people who use ATMs and computer banking for shopping and
making payments tend to deposit checks in person. By handing the

Have you seen the on-screen web browser for the Wii? It's pretty

mobile screens, so maybe I was just impressed with the size :-) ) I'd

In my area (Jersey City, NJ), Bank of America has recently introduced new ATM
machines that are great especially for deposits of checks. I no longer need to
write my account # on the back of the check, nor do I need to put each check

On an unrelated tangent, I stopped writing account numbers on the backs of
checks a long time ago, because many people get their checks back (not as
many as before, but I remember the day), so you are basically giving out
your bank account number to anyone who has written you a check. yeow!
