Yes, a very difficult decision. I'm also pondering this.
One factor that might be a consideration is the sunspot cycle - we are
coming out of it! So 15 or 17 could be very useful portable bands in the
not too distant future. They are doable with the K1 but not the KX1.
As far as the antenna
I want to thank all who responded to my request.
I have decided that if I WAS to buya new kit it would be the KX1; however,
I decided on spending the money on a better antenna.
Currently the only antenna I have is a windom tangled up in my attic.

I decided I wanted 80 meters and now I can not decide between
a K1-2 or a KX1 80/30? Abouit the same price.
I won't go backpacking but I like the idea of 2 different radios.
Also I likw the idea of 2 same radios for maintenance???

I have both the K1-2 and the KX1. The KX1 is working
great with the autotuner and the plug in paddle. Have
the 80/30 kit to build but it may have to wait awhile.
My comment is that I will keep both for now but really
like the KX1 better because of it's great receiver
that has the RF Gain

I can only say that 80 percent of my contacts are on 20 or 40. So the number
of bands covered by K1 or KX1 would not be an issue. The rig I use as all the
bands available but I have favorites and I am sure it would be similar with the
hikers too??

I am looking for a backpack rig (3-5 day backpacking trips). I know the
KX1 is more portable but I am wondering specifically about the receiver
performance between the two. Also in regards to the K2. I know the K2 is

I own a K2 and a KX1, and have some opinions; but I think there is no
hard and fast answer.
The K2 is superb; its receiver is about as good as my Icom IC-7800; no
joke. Yes there are a few conditions in which I prefer the Icom, but to
me, that is an amazing feat given the price
(3-5 day backpacking trips)
If it were me, I'd take the KX1. Smaller, lighter, perfect
for a 3-5 day backpack trip.
But then, that's just my .02c

If properly built, the K1 has a somewhat better receiver than the KX1 in most
