RE: [Elecraft] Antenna?
Bob, My favorite antenna for portable operation has been the PAC-12, by Pacific Antenna. I built the home brew version some months before they began marketing a commercial one. I've used it on 40, 30 and 20 meters, and have recently wound coils for 17 and 15 meters. I haven't had the opportunity to test the 17 and 15 meter coils, but I'm sure they will work as well as the other ones do. I have a cheap ($4.99 when on sale) Harbor Freight canvas tool bag that's about 15 long that easily houses all the parts and a decent chunk of feed line to carry it in. Before getting my K2, I used it mostly on 20 meters with a Small Wonder Labs DSW-II-20, with excellent results. 46 states and even a few DX countries, including Japan. It's performance is better, distance wise than any of the wire antennas I've managed to put up in field locations. Now, mind you, my luck with wire antennas has been atrocious up until field day this year. I like the PAC-12 though for the fact that you do not need a tuner with it. Once adjusted, and I use one of the 4 States QRP group's Tenna Dipper antenna analyzers designed by Steve Weber, KD1JV to adjust it, It radiates quite well, and the radio likes it. If you home brew it, parts shouldn't cost more than 20 bucks for the masting, one coil and the whip. Additional coils can be as cheap as a couple of bucks, and the PVC parts are readily available at most hardware/home improvement stores. The counterpoise for this antenna consists of 3 or more (more is better) 10 foot long radials laid out on the ground. I use 7 with excellent results, and have gotten real good results with only 3. I've even been experimenting with a pair of them in an easily packable phased array, but due to limitations, 20 meters is the only band I've tried for this with promising results. Not much forward gain, but a good null off the back and maybe (I don't have equipment to measure it) 1db forward. It does improve the forward signal somewhat, but without a real test range and good measuring equipment, I have no real idea if it really works or if I'm just perceiving a slight gain. Anyway, the other antenna I have used is an inverted L approximately 130 feet long and placed as high as possible in the trees. Takes a while to set up, but on 80, 40, 40 and 17 meters, using an LDG QRP tuner, it produced lots of contacts. Overall, the PAC-12 takes less than 10 minutes to set up or take down, is light to carry, and produces lots of contacts. IMO it's probably the best bang for the buck if you build it yourself. There's a set of plans available on the AMQRP website www.amqrp.org under the Projects tab and listed as the KA5DVS PAC-12 antenna. Re: [Elecraft] Modify an Astatic D104 Desk Microphone
D-104 microphones come as either Crystal or Ceramic models, which are very high impedance elements. They have an equivalent circuit of a very small capacitor and are intended to be loaded by a resistive impedance in the vicinity of 1 megohm. The tradeoff is that the lower the load resistance, the more low frequencies will be rolled off in the audio. 10K might leave you with a response quite a bit on the bright side. Some people recommend sticking the D-104 into the 50K load common on older gear intended for Hi-Z dynamic microphones, to create a peaky intelligible sound, but this has always seemed excessively bright to my ear. Astatic has already built a communications sound into the microphone working into the nominal load. You don't have to go to any extra trouble to achieve intelligible sound. The best universal answer to the problem of plugging a crystal microphone into a solid-state input is to use some sort of active buffer amplifier such as an op-amp, or an FET to provide a very high impedance load to the microphone and a very low impedance drive to the following transmitter. This circuit would also be compatible with any legacy VT gear. As has been suggested, if your D-104 has the Astatic preamp in the base already, these issues have already been dealt with and you don't need to worry about matching; it's Just a question of setting the gain of the amplifier so you are not driving the input to the radio too hard. Someone was offering a buffer amplifier kit for general purpose interfacing between hi-Z microphones and Lo-Z radios a couple of years ago, but my saved files don't go back that far anymore. If you have a directbox either active or passive, for matching high impedance musical instruments to lo-Z microphone inputs, that might be an effective way to go as well. Behringer makes active direct boxes that sell through Internet music dealers for as little as $19.95, which is competitive with the cost of a good quality transformer. The best propagation today (assuming a flux of 100 and K of 2) appears to be on 14 MHz from about 0100Z to 0400Z. 18 MHz would be slightly better, but is less reliable. My propagation program shows zilch at the 1900Z ECN time! The current time zone offset to Iraq is +4, so that means from 0400-0800 Iraq time would be best. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Of course, the mail servers were really, really, really slow in those days (as in two months to deliver the mail to England...). And what did the good King find out then? Why that those uppity American colonies had declared independence on July SECOND, not the fourth. July 4th was when the declaration was published. See, getting published was EVERYTHING!... even back then G Let the celebration commence! King George had a note in his inbox that we colonials were charting a new course. I will be on hand to run both the early and the late nets but then rush off to nearby Hillsboro to watch the fireworks and breath their sulphurous fumes. I get a kick out of watching Pat watch fireworks. She enjoys them intensely :) ... 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] K2 inventory question
Just completing inventory check for my second K2 (#4313)all well except can't find R50 and R58 (both 1/2 watt so not on the bandolier) are these normally loose in the RFb bag? or do they lurk in some other spot and I've had a senior moment and missed them?. I wouldn't normally bother the reflector for two R's but R50 is 1.5 Ohms and low values not easy to come by here.
