Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KAT3 not functioning on 6m
This thread saved me. I thought my k3 antenna tuner had malfunctioned on 6 m, but luckily it was only because it was in Split (Data mode). The erratic behavior of the ATU and the SWR are quite confusing though as they tell you nothing about this cause. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] IF Output ?
I use the opportunity to follow up on this thread. The IF output of the K3 and K3S is centered on 8.215 MHz. But there is also a second IF at 12 kHz with no output. I wonder if anyone has made an output for the I- and Q- channels at 12 kHz. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Using a K3 to route antenna signals to external devices...
Doug, Yes, thanks, you're right. I have the preamp set up to be active for the higher bands 12, 10, and 6 m, and in the bypass position otherwise. I use this to connect an old shortwave receiver (not an SDR) to my main antenna, so I guess it doesn't hurt for it with the extra gain. [Elecraft] K3 and WSJT-X 1.7
On the wsjtgroup at Yahoo, there are now two of us who have a problem with the newly released version of the WSJT-X program and the audio output level/VOX for the K3. KY7M describes it as follows: "I have been transmitting perfectly in WSJT-X 1.6. As soon as I install 1.7, my transmit light goes on, but no audio goes out unless I turn off VOX and turn it on again. " I have the same symptom and I could sort of resolve it by changing the audio output level up and down on the WSJT-X program (Pwr slider). But in the end it was so annoying that I reverted back to the old version, 1.6. The QRP shop IF buffer amplifier looks spot on, but does anyone have any experience with it? The information is a bit sparse, but says "Small Kit do provide the K2 with a buffered IF Output. Re: [Elecraft] 80 Meter loop question
I've been using an 80 m horizontal loop for as long as I have had my license, about 15 years. It's a bit irregular with two supports on my house and three in trees, height is 7-12 meters. I feed it with open wire feeder to an indoor Elecraft 4:1 balun and then use the tuner of the K2 or K3 to match it to the transceiver. I've done 8-bands CW/digital DXCC, 80 - 10 m, with the loop as the work horse. My decision at the time I put it up was very much based on the simulations that L. B. Cebik, W4RNL published. His articles are kind of hard to find on the internet now, but his best ones that I have on my hard disk are: Horizontally Oriented, Horizontally Polarized Large Wire Loop Antennas My Top Five Backyard Multi-Band Wire HF Antennas Notes on All-Band Use of Horizontal-Plane Loops Horizontal Wire Loops How Big? [Elecraft] Rerouting the KRX3 AUX Input from the Rear BNC to the KAT3
When I built my K3 some years ago I routed the second receiver's AUX antenna input to the rear panel BNC connector. But now I have changed my mind and want to route it through the KAT3 instead, in order to try diversity reception. How complex is this to accomplish? OK, Don - no problem with that :-)So the effect is most striking and easiest to do on the old A level board, but it is doable and has a positive effect even on the B level (i.e. the present) K2 board as Bill W4ZV testified to in his response in this thread also. The TF3MA sidetone mod is still current as it is in fact a modification of the B level board, not just the A level board, as the site states that this is an improvement of exactly the 47k / 82 mH A to B improvement mentioned in the quote below. Re: [Elecraft] LDEs (Long-Delayed Echos)
An 80m or 160m signal echo after about 1/7 second may seem like a round-the-world echo. But it is more likely that it is a ducted signal in the magnetosphere. The actual delay varies with geomagnetic latitude, and the further south one is the closer the delay time is to 1/7 second. Such signals can be trapped in occasionally occurring, tubular magnetospheric ducts, which stretch from the northern to the southern hemispheres along the Earth's magnetic-field lines. I wrote about it in QST in 2009 - http://folk.uio.no/sverre/papers/2009_MagnetoDucting-QST-LA3ZA.pdf. There was also an excellent article about it in Radcom by P. Martinez (G3PLX), "Long Delayed Echoes, A Study of Magnetospheric Duct Echoes 1997-2007," Radcom, Oct 2007, pp. 60-63 (not on the web to my knowledge). I have an analysis of several such medium delayed echoes or magnetospherically delayed echoes (MDE), including that of G3PLX, here: http://la3za.blogspot.no/2010/03/magnetospherically-ducted-echo.html The echo time can be predicted from latitude, so if I get more data, I can run my program to estimate the delay time for a given place at a certain time (geomagnetic latitude rel to geographic latitude varies with time). - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/LDEs-Long-Delayed-Echos-tp7610884p7610886.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Question: Is the DSP Board a Worthwhile upgrade?
I would not have upgraded to the KDSP2. Not for the performance, because although I'm mainly a CW operator, I could probably benefit from it. My main objection to the KDSP2 is user interface. The K2 was not designed for the KDSP2 in the first place as can be seen in how complicated it is to set up and operate compared to the other K2 modules. Given the few buttons of the K2, the user interface for the KDSP2 is probably as good as it can be, but still it is so much harder to use than the other options. The otherwise well thought-out user interface of the K2 is made unncessary complicated by the KDSP2 with all its features. This can be read indirectly from the history of Elecraft here: http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/elecraft/history/ Quote: "A major milestone in our history was the KDSP2 option for the K2. Lyle Johnson, KK7P, became known to us *after* he had mostly completed this highly versatile DSP unit. He reverse-engineered the auxBus protocol and made the KDSP2 behave as if it were a KAF2, which plugged into the same spot. He showed it to us, and we immediately adopted both the product and Lyle himself." - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-Question-Is-the-DSP-Board-a-Worthwhile-upgrade-tp7609953p7609972.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I'm seeing something similar, but I'm not sure if it's the same effect or something related. Re: [Elecraft] Cheap ref osc to lock K3
My experience is that the simple GPS-based 10 MHz reference works well with the K3. The K3 is quoted as measuring frequency to 1 Hz accuracy, implying a measurement time of the order of 1 second. That seems to be enough to smooth out the jitter from the Neo-7M. Of course, there are better solutions around, but why spend money on something which is unnecessary? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Digital Voice Mode - our future?
The country you may be referring to is Norway, where it has been decided to switch off all the biggest broadcasters from FM (88-108 MHz) in 2017 as the first country in the world, http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-32380222 It has been a controversial decision, I for one have critized the audio coding used for sacrificing audio quality in an Audio Engineering Society presentation in 2007 "Audio Quality on the Air in DAB Digital Radio in Norway" http://heim.ifi.uio.no/~sverre/papers/07_AES-DAB-Corrected.pdf But I cannot quite see the relevance for VHF FM for hams. ae4pb wrote > I'm wondering since Digital voice is replacing FM around the world how > hard > it would be to add another mode to the K3S? Re: [Elecraft] Frequency reference for the K3 directly off a GPS
I have done some more experimenting now with my poor man's 10 MHz reference. The ublox Neo-7 GPS is a lousy frequency reference in most respects, except that it is accurate in keeping exactly 10 million periods per second. My experience is that the K3 has enough internal averaging to deal with that. Using a ublox Neo-7 (USD 12 on Ebay) and a 74HC04 as a driver to feed the 10 MHz to the 50 ohm input of the K3EXREF the K3 accepts the input and I see the star in REF*CAL blinking. The reference frequency now starts at 49,379,680 and stabilizes to 49,279,650 after some 15-20 minutes. My initial setting for the reference was 49,379,640 which I determined manually when the K3 was new in 2009 or so. I am going to write this up on my blog with schematics eventually. Re: [Elecraft] Frequency reference for the K3 directly off a GPS
I've got some questions about the type of GPS module I'm using. It is a ublox NEO-7M. The nice feature of this unit is that it has a programmable output which nominally excites an LED at 1 pulse per second, but which also can be programmed to 10 MHz. That output is not connected, so one needs to make a connection to it oneself. Sverre Holm (LA3ZA) wrote > I have done some more experimenting now with my poor man's 10 MHz > reference. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Aux RF mod for Rx out (No Sub-Rx)
I'm using a feed off the KXV3A's Rx in and Rx out ports, as you say, to feed a shortwave receiver. It's very simple with no splitter, just a BNC Tee connector. The K3 needs to be switched to a band which is higher than the external receiver for it to work as RF is routed through the K3's output filters. Also the K3 needs to enable the Rx ant. The shortwave receiver should be protected from the K3's transmitter with this scheme, at least my receiver has not suffered any damage. [Elecraft] Frequency reference for the K3 directly off a GPS
Some recent GPS modules (ublox Neo 7) have a programmable output that in addition to the 1 pps output can be programmed even to output 10 MHz. Re: [Elecraft] Frequency reference for the K3 directly off a GPS
I am aware that a GPSDO etc is fine. But is it overkill for the K3? What I am trying to determine is the minimum requirement for the oscillator that will drive the K3's external reference input. The documentation says that the K3's phase stability is not affected by the external reference. That, too me, sounds as if there is some internal averaging or whatever in place already. Re: [Elecraft] Does the K3S DSP support LMS noise reduction ?
The K3 and thus presumably the K3S implements one particular form of the Least Mean Squares algorithm called the Leaky LMS, see Lyle's response some years ago: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-NR-td1557606.html#a1557836 That's an adaptive version of a Wiener filter that doesn't get so easily 'stuck' in a non-optimal solution if signal statistics should change drastically. Instead the non-optimal solution 'leaks' out of the filter. The Wiener filter by itself is a fixed signal-to-noise optimizing filter, and thus is fundamentally different from low pass, high pass etc in that the filter's coefficients depend on the input signal. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Does-the-K3S-DSP-support-LMS-noise-reduction-tp7605863p7606068.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K3: Shifted audio image (L-MIX-R)
Is it only my K3 that has this imaging problem with the audio? I have my L-MIX-R set to A Ab meaning that the main receiver's audio should be centered in the headphones. That works fine when the sub-receiver is on, but as soon as I turn it off, the audio drifts to the left. There is still audio in the right-hand ear, but the image has clearly shifted to the left. This is the case both for the CW and USB modes. It didn't use to be like this, so I think it must have crept in with the latest firmware updates: MCU 5.14, FPF 1.19, DSP1 and DSP2 2.83 - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Shifted-audio-image-L-MIX-R-tp7603581.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 K144XV spurious signal on 144,414.1
Good to hear that others are hearing it as well, so then it is for sure nothing that radiates in our shack. I've heard of two now, at 144,411.09 MHz and 144,414.8 MHz respectively. What we found at our club station's K3 was: - it cannot be heard on the 28 MHz band which is where the 2m band is downmixed to, on 28,414.1 in our case - the signal goes through the first mixer as its pitch will change (a lot) if the 116 MHz crystal in the K144XV is subjected to a coolant spray - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-K144XV-spurious-signal-on-144-414-1-tp7601496p7601498.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Settings Retrieval Software
Hi Don Yes, you are right. So the software should only be used right before/after adjustment and then the cable should be removed. Indeed the K2/100 I just had here had the cable plugged in, but that was not because of this software. I think it was just because the previous owner didn't know better. I removed it before shipping it on to the present owner. 73 Sverre LA3ZA 2015-03-09 12:56 GMT+01:00 Don Wilhelm-4 [via Elecraft] ml-node+s365791n7599986...@n2.nabble.com: With this software, there is an increased temptation to leave the internal counter probe connected inside the K2. While that is OK for the K2/10, for the K2/100 the probe should not be left plugged in because it can couple BFO harmonics into the KPA100 resulting in spurious emissions. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Settings Retrieval Software
Hi Mike Good to hear from you. I don't really know what it takes to make the programs more useful. All I know is that everything that has to do with Java has gotten more and more difficult to use, especially for Windows users. I am running Windows 7 here myself. Therefore, after quite some struggle with browsers and security, it was a relief to find out that I could run the K2 Settings Retrieval Software from the command line in Windows by just typing in javaws params.jnlp after having downloaded params.jnlp to my harddisk. I realize that the security issues are caused by calls to your website. If a 100% local program could do the same, then perhaps that would make it simpler, but I am just a user, not a developer of these things, so I don't really know what it takes. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-Settings-Retrieval-Software-tp7599921p7599958.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K2 Settings Retrieval Software
I just wanted to remind the list of the AB3AP software found on http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/elecraft/ I'm especially fond of the software for K2 Settings Retrieval about which he says Save your K2 set up in case of an unexpected reset. I have just serviced a K2 where the previous owner had had soldering problems (untinned toroids, solder bridges, ...) as well as settings which were far off. I find it useful then to start by reading out the settings to figure out what the starting point is, as well as backing up all the values when the calibration has been completed. The AB3AP software is in the form of Java programs. My web browsers don't allow them to be run, but simply downloading the code and running them from the command line works fine. Re: [Elecraft] Auto Notch Revisited
In the context of the LMS filter for FIR notch filtering and noise cancellation, one common way to find the reference is by a simple delay of the input signal. If the purpose is to separate voice from a sinusoid, then one utilizes the fact that a sinusoid has a long correlation function in time compared to voice. If the delay is longer than usual correlation time for voice, one will get a reference for the desired signal - at least in the correlation domain which is what counts here. For a noise reduction filter, the delay is often shorter, as noise has short correlation time compared to a voiced signal. David Woolley (E.L) wrote The problem with it in the context of this thread is that it needs a value for d(n). [Elecraft] 4 MHz oscillator is too high in frequency (K2)
My aging K2 (#2198) has developed a curious symptom in that the 4 MHz oscillator cannot be adjusted lower than about 4,000,000.55 kHz. It has probably been like this for a while and my BFO settings have probably been done with the incorrect reference. I discovered it by observing that the indicated frequency was about 0.75 kHz off. Questions to the group: 1. Has anybody experienced anything like this, and can it be blamed on aging of e.g. the crystal or on some of the capacitors in the circuit? (BTW I have the KI6WX mod of the oscillator circuit http://mailman.qth.net/pipermail/elecraft/2003-August/022687.html which has worked well before) 2. How can I do a quick fix? e.g. by reinstalling C21=33 pF instead of the 10 pF of the mod above - or some other idea for a fix? 73 Sverre - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/4-MHz-oscillator-is-too-high-in-frequency-K2-tp7587585.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] How to outfit a K3 for JT65HF or JT9
Larry Lopez wrote So you need a linear phase filter. Is the DSP filter linear phase ? I teach DSP and filters at the University of Oslo. Of the two DSP filter types, FIR (Finite Impulse Response) and IIR (Infinite Impulse Response), only an FIR filter can be designed to have exact linear phase and constant group delay. But an FIR filter can also have a non-linear phase, but that is the exception. Therefore I assume that the K3's FIR filter is linear phase (I couldn't find this mentioned in the manual). If you really need the presumably linear phase response of the FIR filter, then that requires that the DSP filter is much narrower than the roofing filter (crystal filter) so that the DSP filter is the main contributor to the passband and transition band responses. This is however not the usual way to run JT9 and JT65, but rather that the filters in the decoder software running in the PC provide the narrow bandwidth. I believe they are FFT-based filter banks which is also a kind of FIR filter with linear phase. The K3 manual has this to say on the DSP filters and how to select: Narrow DSP Filter Types For bandwidth settings of 100 Hz or lower, the K3’s DSP normally uses a type of filter that minimizes ringing: the Finite Impulse Response or FIR filter. If you’d like steeper filter skirts, and don’t mind a small amount of ringing, you can select Infinite Impulse Response” or IIR filters for these bandwidths. Locate CONFIG:FLx BW menu entry, then tap 7 until you see IIR ON. Both main and sub receivers will use the same setting. IIR filters take longer to change from one bandwidth to another, so you may hear audio artifacts when adjusting the DSP controls. If this is objectionable, use the default FIR filters. 73 Sverre - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/How-to-outfit-a-K3-for-JT65HF-or-JT9-tp7587584p7587641.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] CW Pitch Resolution
There is a study from 1992 that tested recognition rate vs pitch frequency. Unfortunately only a few tones were tested, but at least one can infer that a low tone is preferrable. This is in Montnemery, Peter, Bengt Almqvist, and Sten Harris. Recognition of telegraphy signs at different listening levels and frequencies. Scandinavian Audiology 21.4 (1992): 255-260. The abstract is: The recognition of telegraphy masked by noise at 40 and 80 signs/min telegraphy speed was studied in 10 normal-hearing subjects at different sound pressure levels (25–85 dB SPL in steps of 5 dB) as well as at different test frequencies (2000, 1000, 800, 630, 500 and 250 Hz). The ability to recognize the signs varied with varying SPL. Recognition for most of the subjects was best at an SPL close to 70 dB. All subjects improved their recognition as the frequency was lowered to 500 Hz, some even at 250 Hz. These facts should be taken into consideration when training telegraphy operators as well as in the construction of radio receivers to permit listening at low frequencies. Furthermore, the critical ratio was calculated at the different test frequencies. Read More: http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/01050399209046009; Based on this result, it would be interesting to zoom in on the frequencies between 250 and 500 Hz for further testing, also higher speeds would be interesting to test as 40 and 80 is the same as 8 and 16 wpm. Peter Montnemery is by the way SM7CMY. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/CW-Pitch-Resolution-tp7579837p7580032.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Feature Request - Transmit sampling
As your post indicates, the splattering of JT65 signals has most likely nothing to do with your transmitter and setup. It is more likely to be due to the specifics of the JT65 display/decoding algorithm than anything else. I have commented on that in my blog: Overmodulated JT65 on HF? http://la3za.blogspot.no/2013/04/overmodulated-jt65-on-hf.html WB4SON wrote Yesterday I received an email from a ham a few thousand miles away asking me to clean up my signal -- I was running JT65 at the time, and he saw my signal decode on his rig in a half-dozen spots across the waterfall. Later that night a nearby ham was nice enough to run a spectral analysis on my signal and found it looked clean as well. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.com/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-Feature-Request-Transmit-sampling-tp7579177p7579228.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Simplest ever mod for K2
I did this mod, and I recommend it, it really makes a difference for hardly any effort. It is by the way the first mod for the K2 for years! It has been added to the updated LA3ZA list of modifications: http://la3za.blogspot.no/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2_28.html#K2-misc http://la3za.blogspot.no/p/la3za-unofficial-guide-to-elecraft-k2_28.html#K2-misc George Blahun Jr wrote This is such a simple and quick mod I have resisted posting it, but I do feel it makes a small, not totally aesthetic difference. As an amateur astronomer, I always blacken the edges of eyepieces and objective lenses to enhance contrast. I did the same thing on the K2 bezel and I believe it does enhances contrast (at least during the day with high ambient light levels) and improves the appearance of the bezel by eliminating the hazy edge around the clear plastic. Just take a magic marker and carefully run it along the edge of the bezel (after removing it from the radio). Let each length and width dry before continuing to the next portion. It's literally a 5 minute job. Re: [Elecraft] Modern battery for K2
I wonder what resulted from this. I looked at it also and found that although this high-capacity battery probably fits physically, it may not be a good idea to put it inside the K2 due to the power switch and the indicator LED. See image at e.g Aliexpress.com http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/DC-12V-9800mAh-Super-Rechargeable-Lithium-ion-Battery-Pack-T-1298A/810723_539046329.html . If fitted inside the K2, the switch must be on and then the indicator will discharge the battery - unless someone has found a way to disable the LED without damaging the battery. As an external battery, it would be excellent though, as far as I can tell. Deni F5VJC wrote HI I have just acquired a Super Polymer Lithium Ion battery from an Ebay seller, it's part no. is DC 1298A, (12V 9.8Ah) Also received a small charger with this battery for 120-240 Vac. Re: [Elecraft] K3: CW decoder - minor sw request
I've had some correspondence regarding my proposal for added characters. Looking at the K3 display on page 12 in the K3 manual, it may be that the display cannot show the details required for these characters. That gives two options: 1. Show the three umlaut characters with a bar over instead. The display can show them as small o, a, u with an overbar. Also show the a with ring as a small a with an accent grave (falling bar) on top 2. Just show the unaccented characters Sverre Holm (LA3ZA) wrote ---. = Ö (o with umlaut, two dots over o) .-.- = Ä (a with umlaut, two dots over a) .--.- = Å (a with ring) ..-- = Ü (u with umlaut, two dots over u) - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-CW-decoder-minor-sw-request-tp7572913p7572981.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3: CW decoder - minor sw request
The importance of accented letters probably varies from language to language, but in Scandinavia we actually both learn and use the Ä, Ö, and Å in Morse code, so that is the reason for my request. I know this is different in e.g. written French where it seems like one may actually chose to include the accents or not for capital letters and in a headline. That would not work in any of the Scandinavian languages. Gustavo Villada wrote even when I could like have ñ, á..ú, and don't forget the french acute, Ç and others and they have reason, because if I ear a ..-- I wont know what letter is that. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-CW-decoder-minor-sw-request-tp7572913p7572988.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3: CW decoder - minor sw request
I have recently started to have more Scandinavian CW QSOs and use the CW decoder from time to time. But in the middle of many words it just shows a big * due to a lack of some non-English characters. Would it be possible to add four characters which would cover German, Swedish, Finnish, and sort of Norwegian/Danish also, possibly other languages as well. They are: ---. = Ö (o with umlaut, two dots over o) .-.- = Ä (a with umlaut, two dots over a) .--.- = Å (a with ring) ..-- = Ü (u with umlaut, two dots over u) Hopefully, this won't take up much code space. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391, LA3ZA Blog: http://la3za.blogspot.com, LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications: http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-CW-decoder-minor-sw-request-tp7572913.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

If you want to make the circuit with two diodes for auto detection, then if you have the possibility use Shottky diodes. Re: [Elecraft] OT: Distinguishable angular momentum in radio photons?
This is the debunking saying that this is more or less a special case of MIMO - Multiple Input Multiple Output - communications, i.e. using multiple antennas on the rx and tx sides: Is orbital angular momentum (OAM) based radio communication an unexploited area? Ove Edfors and Anders J Johansson, IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION, 2012 http://www.lunduniversity.lu.se/o.o.i.s?id=12683postid=2062936 Abstract: We compare the technique of using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of radio waves for generating multiple channels in a radio communication scenario with traditional multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) communication methods. We demonstrate that, for certain array configurations in free space, traditional MIMO theory leads to eigen-modes identical to the OAM states. From this we conclude that communicating over the sub-channels given by OAM states is a subset of the solutions offered by MIMO, and therefore does not offer any additional gains in capacity. - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391 LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/OT-Distinguishable-angular-momentum-in-radio-photons-tp7525974p7528491.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Gamma P/S
I have Gamma HPS-1a small switching supply which I use with my K2 + KPA100 as an easily movable rig. I always use it to feed a ladderwire via a balun to a nonresonant antenna. Therefore the feedline may pick up stuff very close to the power supply (i.e. 1-2 m away). I have noticed that on 15 meter CW, I often hear a swooshing noise right after I have transmitted. It is very annoying as it comes right at the time when one listens for the other stations to confirm reception in e.g. a contest. I think it is a frequency varying noise that sweeps over my frequency as the load on the power supply changes.
