Leakage on earlier K3 I/O boards causing intermittent transmit when
changing bands (potential problem due to solder flux residue up to at
least serial 400 range).

Conditions were quite good this week with only a little QRM.
Topics were:
French amateurs running AM nets on 3550 KHz, usually active most
mornings, plus the usual fishing boats...
S-Meter calibration on both the K2 and K3. General view was that the K3
can be very accurately calibrated.
Softrock
Softrock and Rocky, pay attention to the cables between the Softrock and
the sound card input, especially watching the balance.
I didn't listen to the UK Elecraft net this morning so I'm not aware of the
context, however when I
started building Softrock's I encountered the familiar centre
Conditions this week seemed poor initially, we managed with conditions
slowly improving. There were three new stations on the net which is
always a welcome sign.
Topics included:
Audio thump at switch on with the K3, is this a recent firmware issue or
not? Audio quality on AM broadcast and
We enjoyed a relatively clear frequency but had to QSY at one stage,
probably losing Stewart G3RXQ in the process. David MM0XDG's newly
completed K3 (some 30 minutes prior to joining us) sounded very good.
Topics included: N1MM and other logging programs, why bother with
modifications at all?,
There were quite a few stations on the new, I would have expected less
as it's CQ WW this weekend. Topics covered included vat issues and
shipping issues when sending a transceiver back to Elecraft for repair
(http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/int-processing.htm partly covers the issue),
The recently
We had another busy and interesting net this week. I never fail to be
amazed at how we manage to find useful subjects that are Elecraft
related each week!
Main topics were:
External speakers, for anyone interested mine came from Argos
(http://www.argos.co.uk/), part number 513/6113, Acoustic
I was listening, but I did not call in as there were enough on the net
already!

Using a pair of small Creative (non amplified) computer speakers,
and the audio quality from the K3 is excellent.
I must be very lucky, I can't hear any of the birdies listed.
My K3 has the 2nd RX, however I took no special care in the
routing of the signal cables.

We had a very busy net this week with four new stations.
Main topics this week were:
The recent AF mod to the K3 and where to obtain RF chokes in the UK
(Farnell 1635-800 - not axial or Rapid Electronics 88-2882) We've not
measured the space to see if they fit, but are worth considering.
A couple of stations were unaware of the revised start time, so we had a
tea break before starting the net close to 10am.
There were the usual discussions, main topics this week were:
K3 shift/width controls.
K3 memory and function (PF) use.
K3 key beeps
K3 facilities for white stick
We managed without too much continental QRM this week.
Topics were:
Memory (band switching) use with the latest firmware.
LP-100 power meters (several stations on the net are now using them)
IF shift when reducing bandwidth on SSB. Suggestion that the centre
frequency should be 1.35 KHz not 1.5
Rod (G3YHM) posted a message proposing a change to 3720 KHz to reduce
continental QRM. Can I have the views of others as it makes no
difference to me what the frequency is.
The original frequency of 3630 KHz was chosen so that we might have been
able to run wider bandwidth modes such as AM
The change back to GMT from British Summer Time only helped a little
with the QRM levels this weekend. 3 stations were quite weak and a
problem to copy for several of us.
Topics were: G4ILO's KComm software (and internal encoding/decoding data
modes with it and the K3), latest K3 firmware and
Another weekend with a lot of QRM which thankfully eventually reduced.
Linear amplifiers and decent antennas were once again necessary.
Topics included:
Working VK9DWX
Repair problems associated with returning a complete K3 to the USA for
repair.
