[Felvtalk] age

2017-02-08 Thread Armstrong-Brown, Sheila DDS Timonium
I am learning a lot about FELV cats since I found my Skylar. Just wondering
about how old is the oldest cat that lived with it. I had the IFA test done
and that is positive also even though he is perfectly healthy at the moment.
He will be 2 years old this month, I found him a year ago.

strays. It's wonderful to help out the cats that need it the most. My cat
will be 2 years old and is just fine besides having the FELV status. It is a
great thing you are doing.

Maybe. There are a couple of hundred of viruses that cause a human cold. It's
not just one virus, plus bacteria can be involved too (think strep throat).

2016-11-16 Thread Armstrong-Brown, Sheila DDS Timonium
Well, my FELV cat's bloodwork came back perfect. I had him retested for the
4th time and he is still positive. I am assuming the IFA test if 100%
accurate. But for now, he is abit over weight and healthy. And I am shocked.
He is only 1.5 years old. He just strayed in one day back in March and he is
the perfect angel. The vet suggested that I don't use the interferon until he
is actually starting to get sickly.

I haven't had any effect from using Interferon on a FeLV cat, but others in
this group have. However, if Skyler's gums are white, it sounds very much like
he is anemic. If the Interferon isn't helping, I suggest a
Winstrol/Prednisolone/Doxycycline regime.

strong evidence that Doxycyclene added to this treatment regimen can inhibit

I am sure the Elisa test was wrong. You can have Curly retested in 3 months to
be sure. The IFA is very accurate. If the cat is indoor, no way to get
infected.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Questioning FELV diagnosis

Our cat, Curly, is ten years old. We found her outside as a kitten and had her
tested for FELV at that time. She was negative. She's been strictly an indoor
cat since then and had no contact with any potentially infected cats.
Three months ago, she wasn't acting like herself. Very lethargic and moderately
dehydrated. We took her to the vet. She was running a low fever and her blood
test showed severe anemia and low white cell count. The vet suspected immune
mediated hemolytic anemia. He gave her some fluids, started her on an
antibiotic for any potential infections and prednisone. Three days later she
was about the same so we took her back to the vet. This time they ran an ELISA
test to rule out FELV even though it was incredibly unlikely given her history.
It came back positive. They drew blood at that time for an IFA test to confirm
it and told us to discontinue the prednisone immediately.
By the next day, Curly was feeling better and she quickly bounced back to her
old self which I suspect was due to the three days of prednisone treatment. The
IFA test came back negative.
We were content to think the ELISA was a false positive because Curly seemed
fine until a couple of weeks ago when she became listless and anti-social
again. Another blood test showed her to again be very anemic.
We are very confused about what to do. The negative IFA really has me
wondering. From my understanding, that test is 99.9% accurate in detecting the
second stage of leukemia.

A negative IFA should mean only one of two things:

1. The cat is not infected with FELV.

2. The cat is in the early stages and has not progressed to the second stage of
the disease where the virus infects the bone marrow.

That would mean that, in order for the anemia to have been caused by leukemia,
the IFA should have definitely been positive at that point because it would
need to be actively compromising the bone marrow's functioning.
I am leaning toward trying prednisone again, especially since she is hardly
eating or moving around at this point. If anyone can point out if my logic is
flawed, please do so. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
Randy

Subject: [Felvtalk] My FIV/Felv cat

I am new to this group, but not to FIV/Felv. I rescued a sweet guy,
that personally I think was dumped in my neighborhood. He started coming around
my home and tried to make it his home, but then he stopped coming around. I
could only imagine what could have happened to him. About a year later he
showed up! I was now volunteering with a local rescue group and they helped me
to trap him and get him fixed. We actually had someone that wanted to adopt
him, but unfortunately when he tested positive they backed out. I felt so bad
for him, as he was the sweetest fellow. I was planning on sending him to a
sanctuary, but my husband wanted to try some natural remedies that he had heard
had amazing effects. They ended up not doing what we had hoped, but in the mean
time, I had become very attached and felt it wouldn’t benefit neither him nor
myself to send him away. so, we built him and outdoor enclosure that he can go
in and out of through the window in his own room in the back of my home. I have
other cats, so he had to be isolated. =( He does get company throughout the
day between myself and my older son, who does his school work on the computer,
located in Butch’s room. Between the two of us, it sometimes gets to be long
nights, so that he doesn’t have to be alone for too long.

I have had Butch now, for almost two years. We think he’s about 4-5
years old. We have been through the removal of most of his teeth and the
removal of a small tumor on his foot. He has a great appetite, went from
9-14lbs, everything still works. If not for his status, he is a very healthy
guy. My Vet still doesn’t understand why he is still with us. I honestly didn’t
think he would be here this long either, which brings me to my problem. As much
as I try to keep him company, he is pretty lonely. I try to play as much as I
can with him. Red lazor lights, stuffed toys on strings etc… He has a cat tree
and other places to perch on and in. He has his 8x8 outdoor enclosure with a
motion light for when he goes outside, but its getting colder out and he
doesn’t stay out there too long anymore, especially at night, which is when I
get the most guilty for leaving him alone, but I have to sleep sometime. Plus,
like I said, I have other kitties that look for my attention too. =/

Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can make his life here
not so boring? I can’t get another cat with the same status, even though that
would be golden, but I’d just end up in the same situation when one of them
passes away. He would love another kitty, which is why he came around in the
first place, but its not realistic. So any help would be great. Also, I was
reading a couple of threads about a steriod. Does this make it possible for
FIV/Felv cats to interact with healthy cats? Or does it help in reversing their
status? Any info on that too would be appreciated.

Please know, I realize there probably isn’t a magic pill to make
this all go away, but I also don’t know how long Butch is going to be with me
and it just seems so unfair that he has to be alone for so long. I love him a
lot. He is my buddy and he looks forward to me being with him. We cuddle a lot
at night, and I try to make sure he’s sleeping before I go to bed myself.
FreeAgain, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

 Thank you for listening.

Re: [Felvtalk] My FIV/Felv cat

2016-11-30 Thread Armstrong-Brown, Sheila DDS Timonium
I also put up a screen door with plexy glass to my felv cat can see the other
cats and not feel alone and that way he also have more room in the house to
play. I have learned that they get depressed staring at the same walls so we
now use screen doors and the glass is so in case they sneeze they can’t get it
on the healthy cats.

First, thank you for being such a great guardian for your kitty cats! Second,
if getting another kitty cat wouldn't cause too much stress - get another FeLV

would be saving another life - it's a never ending cycle that sometimes feels

it all comes down to what you fel comfortable with. My Annie was diagnosed
felv when I got her at the age of 4. she is happy and enjoys her life. She
shares my lap, food bowls, water fountains. I believe hat due to stress, she
tested positive and at the most is is a carrier. at first, we kept the others
vaccinated for felv but after a few years, no one tested positive and we
stopped even that. if your baby has been with you for a few years, has
exhibited no signs of the disease, I would let her into the house with the
others. that is my opinion, but it will be up to you.

Re: [Felvtalk] Negative IFA test

2016-12-22 Thread Armstrong-Brown, Sheila DDS Timonium
I had the same situation but when the IFA is negative, the cat should shed the
virus after testing negative. They normally retest every 3 months for the
felv elisa test. The IFA test is 99.9% accurate.

Amy,

Your story is similar to mine. I think that there is so much that vets don't
know about Felv, so it is great to hear from others with their situation. When
I found out that she had Felv from the Elisa test, her blood work was fairly
normal and since that time she has gained weight. So I think it is wait and
see situation. She still likes to wake me up at 3:00 am , so I think she
still feels good.

My baby does this when he is just lying down and resting. No fleas or anything
else. His middle area just jumps like he is having hiccups. It’s been
happening over the last month but all else is normal. Eating and drinking and
acting normal.

Ardy,

Have you looked into Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome? It looks like the skin
'ripples' and the cat either bites at the spot or tries to run away from it,
but there are no fleas present. Here is an article from Cornell vet school:

Hi Sheila,

Our cat Tigger (who was FeLV+) did that body quiver thing, and usually right
after eating. He did it more than our current cat – Topaz – who does not have
FeLV. Tigger would then turn around fast and try to bite his side or back, and
then he would run, as if running away from it. The vet said he had UTI and we
treated him for that – and a second vet said it was UTI but not urinary tract
infection, but rather urinary tract inflammation. They did all kinds of tests
including taking urine samples with a needle.

Topaz also does it but not as often, always after eating. The vet said she must
have fleas and sold me some of that stuff you put on the back of their neck.
Although they fine tooth combed her and could not find any fleas. I have never
seen a flea on her or in the house, and I know what they look like and have had
them in the house several years ago, and had to “bomb” the house and dip the
cat etc. So I never put that chemical stuff on her. I have been trying to
get her to drink more water though and she does it less now. She prefers to
drink out of the bathroom faucet which I leave running in a tiny stream for
her. (I have a fountain but she isn’t interested).

I’m not convinced that any of the vets I have taken them to are correct so if
anyone else has any idea, I’d be interested in hearing your opinion on what
this is too.
Thanks,
Ardy

Sheila, my 2 cents-
- for me - it's not just spreading the FeLV to others, it the autoimmune
problem of not being able to fight off viruses or diseases that they could get
from other cats.
I have Buddy in our guest room - in a controlled environment- we replaced the
door with another re-engineered door. The replacement door bottom panel we
replaced with clear plexiglas so he can see the other cats in the house, and
the top panel with a screen door screen guard panel for air and to get house
sounds. He uses the plexiglas as a drum-especially when he wants attention!

I have spent at least 2 hours with him each night for the last 5 years- have my
own easy chair and large screen tv :)

That's the remedy I came up with so he gets plenty of loving and entertainment-
he's probably the healthiest of all the other 14 I have inside!

•Food: no junk food, both wet and no-grain kibble -that includes a variety of
brands- and fresh water
•Vaccine: wouldn't touch it - I don't use vaccines unless required by law
•Stress: I keep it as low as possible, that means only vet trips if life &
death- can't afford routine visits because we're living on retirement funds
•Pray: a lot
Will be praying for Robert too!

Sheila, in my (completely unprofessional) opinion, the vaccine is a good idea
for your cats that are currently healthy.

If it were me, I'd keep the FIV and FeLV separated just because they already
have compromised immune systems and any illness they come in contact with could
really be devastating. Also, the less stressed your FeLV cat is, the better off
they will be.

Thank you for taking in so many sick and unwanted animals, they are certainly
lucky to have found their way to your home!

We were sure all sorts of bad things were going to happen after we found out
that Zander was FeLV+. Not only didn't any of the others contract it, but he
was very close to several of them and would cuddle and mutually groom each
other. At first, this made me very anxious and I would separate them, but
again, as they had been doing this for months BEFORE the FeLV diagnosis, I
figured if they were going to get the virus, they would have gotten it by then.
Nothing happened. I had found one kitten, during the time we had Zander, so we
kept her isolated in a bathroom until we could find a home for her. She was and
still is just fine. We didn't use any particularly clever method to keep them
apart - the kitten just stayed in my husband's bathroom until I lined up a home.

Sheila

I had a FeLV positive boy (Zander) for seven years with all my other cats. No
one else got it. By the time we figured out he was FeLV positive, he had been
with my other cats for more than a year, so I figured that any harm that was
going to be done, had already been done. Since then, I have looked into this
online, and from what I am reading, FeLV cats don't really pass the virus on to
other adults all that readily, and the main risk is to young kittens. Even
then, the virus is not a hardy one and doesn't survive long in a cat's
environment.

Re: [Felvtalk] 28 Cats..

2017-07-24 Thread Armstrong-Brown, Sheila DDS Timonium
Skylar seems to want to wrestle last time I let him out and I was afraid so I
let him run and I run behind him. I guess I could keep doing that and keep him
away from the FIV one. I feel so bad for him. He is alone and he hates the
dog so he has no one but me. Thanks for telling me, I will try different
things.

No one helps me Bob. I started a 2nd job at an animal hospital so I can get
the discount on all the cats. It's still very expensive. No fosters, they
stray in to the farm and people drop off sickly animals and all the humane
society would say is that if I turned the cats in to them, they would be put
down. So until I can't afford to eat, I just get them spayed, neutered and
healthy again and I just keep them. 14 are indoors. The sickly and sweet ones
I always bring in . Glad I have a big house.

for him to watch like a fish tank, bird feeders outside of room, or if you have
a smart tv..paul dinning videos on youtube are a favorite of mine and my girls

Mozart and Miko did everything together. Their mom, Ally tolerated being with
them but would have been fine as only kitty. After Miko died, eventually she
started playing with him. He is definitely more dependent on her now than she
is on him :-).

I have never had anyone tell me my cats needed cholesterol tested.
i was beginning to wonder if the list was still there, had not heard anything.

No, he said it was no big deal at all. I just worry. This is my first FELV

Hi all, I am with a shelter in Western NY. I have adopted several FE LV+
cats. I was asked if I could take on one more for the shelter and did. Last
night I was asked if I would be willing to take two more from a neighboring
shelter. I was unable to do that and they were euthanized today. That shelter
is not interested in rescue groups or putting any money or other resources into
cats that are Fe Lv+. I am looking to find Fe Lv rescues that are in the
NY/PA/OH areas that I could contact to see if in the future I could take cats
in need to so that they are not euthanized.

Thank you for any suggestions and assistance!!
-Pam

Re: [Felvtalk] Pam, Sandy et all

Hello. Has anyone heard of our FelV cats and cancer patients not allowed to be
around one another? My felv cat Skylar has been with me 2 years and my nephew
moved in who has cancer, I was unsure if they should be sleeping with each
other. Thanks for any information.

Thank you Bob :). I will try to post some pictures sometime of the crew :).
A friend had a kitty who had chronic diarrhea and nothing worked. They found
it was an autoimmune disease that was treated with B12 shots, prednisone, and
hydrolyzed protein. He was on this plan for a few months and has been diarrhea
free for several years now. He is also off the hydrolyzed protein food too.
His stool is still softer than other cats but no diarrhea. I am extremely
familiar with cats not eating food additives and special foods that are
supposed to help them. My vet now says, "with any other cat we would do ,
but this is Becca so will attempt.
