Just got a reply from Vatsim ive pasted it it below.

:

it's certainly viable to start such a client. However, in order to
connect to the VATSIM network, it needs to be using libraries whose
source code is proprietary to VATSIM (i.e. its source code is under Non
Disclosure Agreement).

If that's OK with you, let me know.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] vatsim

2006-06-12 Thread Justin Smithies
How about we just use our own system based on data from the FG prop tree.
We already have the google map servers , so all we would need to do is get
other people to host their own too and become controllers for different
areas.
For voip / text we could use a secondary app which would run on Win , Linux
Mac or develop our own.

It would save heaps of legal issues .

Ok it would maybe need some fine tuning but we're all good at that here :)

 Honestly, I'm really curious to know what the _real_ driving force is
 behind this protectionism.
 Is this stupid arrogance (if they want to participate, they'll have to

 some third party implements their protocol ?

 Anyway, if they don't want FlightGear users to participate does
 anyone have an idea if the FlightProject network still is supported

It has cabin lights switchable , logo lights and strobes / landing gear.

We are still adding other instruments etc so its a work in progress project.

[Flightgear-devel] stall xml coding

2006-05-18 Thread Justin Smithies
I wonder if anyone can help me out with some xml coding please ?

My stall sound config is below but i want to modify it so the warning comes on
when these criteria are met.

I wish to monitor the prop /surface-positions/flap-pos-norm because as the
flaps go down the stall speed should be lower.

Also if the gear is down then the stall speed is
increased  /gear/gear[0]/position-norm

Whereas at the moment the script only sounds the alarm if the wheels are off
the ground and the speed is below 150kts.

How can i add the above ?

Oh yes im using Yasim so the property /sim/alarms/stall-warning doesnt exist.

So how do i modify this so the sound will stop at say 0.3 and fully extended

values.

[Flightgear-devel] flaps

2006-05-08 Thread Justin Smithies
Hi all,
          I have a quick question that someone is bound to know the answer to.

On my aircraft model i need the flaps to step through 7 positions.
But i noticed that the nasal script controls.nas is hard coded to 3 equal
positions only.

How do i get around that without changing the controls.nas script as other
aircraft might need the 3 equal steps .
I just want mine to have 7 steps we ll in fact if i may go a little further
could i have the following positions ?

0 Degree
1
5
15
20
25
30

Any fancy scripting ideas without changing any of the default FG source, just
the aircrafts folder sources.
This has to work from any joystick file too and the default keyboard file.

Thanks in advance

[Flightgear-devel] sound on 737-300

2006-04-23 Thread Justin Smithies
just recompiled cvs version of FG and for some strange reason i have no sound
on the 737-300 , the volume is up , and if i try other models like the 747
they work ok.
Only thing changed is FG being updated from the cvs.

Strange.

Any ideas ?

[Flightgear-devel] World scenery

2006-04-07 Thread Justin Smithies
Hi all,
  I have just installed all of the world scenery on my FG installation
and i think i might have found some missing terrain data?

I decided to fly from PHOG ,Kahului Airport in Hawaii it loaded up fine i
even saw 3d models but there was no terrain just sea all around me.
Can someone else check too just to make sure im not going mad.
If you can see terrain let me know what file it is on .
I just downloaded the entire scenery folder and extracted it to FG.
I can see other areas like HK and Greece etc so its installed correctly.

Regards,
Justin smithies

 I don't see PHOG in the airports database. In case you mean POGG, you
 could try this one:

 I believe the metar data is only updated hourly at the source so there
 is no point to polling more often.

 Sanity check might be nice, though. Last week my local airport was
 reporting 128 knot cross winds! Happend to be the exact instant I was

Re: [Flightgear-devel] weather updates

2006-04-03 Thread Justin Smithies

For example Dyce EGPD to Edinburgh EGPH does not take 1 hour and if you look
at the ftp://weather.noaa.gov/data/observations/metar/stations/  site and
view their weather data they are totally different.
So being able to choose when the the system updates would be much better as
you could easily be within range of a different weather station.

 You need to install alut. This was done automatically in the past,
 but now the OpenAL guys/gals separated it, and if you are using OpenAL
 from cvs you have to install it separately. There's a directory
 alut/ next to linux/ with its own configure, etc. If you are using
 OpenAL from a distributor, then it may be an extra package.

 Mind you: EasyJet.com might want us to pay for using their trademark.

[Flightgear-devel] nasal help required

2006-03-26 Thread Justin Smithies
Hi all ,
   Can someone help me out here please.

I want to make a nasal script that watches controls/gear/gear-down using a
listener.

When called this is what i would like to happen.

If /systems/electrical/volts 22 then let the gear go up or down.

If /systems/electrical/volts 22 then make the gear stay where they are.

I did have a bash at this myself but cant seem to get it to work right.

# Set listners for certain conditions.

gear = func {
power = getprop(/systems/electrical/volts);
status = getprop(controls/gear/gear-down);
if (power  22 and status == 1) {
 setprop(controls/gear/gear-down, 1);}
elsif (power  22 and status == 0) {
 setprop(controls/gear/gear-down, 0);}
elsif (power  22 and status == 0) {
 setprop(controls/gear/gear-down, 1);}
elsif (power  22 and status == 1) {
 setprop(controls/gear/gear-down, 0);}
} # end function

setlistener(controls/gear/gear-down, gear);

See what i mean ? All messed up ;)

Thanks in advance,
Justin Smithies

As instructed i have done the following :

Click on the link below to download one of the aircraft packages. To install,
create a directory ${FG_ROOT}/data/Aircraft/AI, copy the zip file to this

So i made a dir in Aircraft called AI then unzipped the file there.

I enable AI but i dont see no models ?

Ok trying out this multiplayer stuff and im connecting like this.

--multiplay=out,10,mpserver02.flightgear.org,5002

Can somebody humour me and put there aircraft on runway 16 at EGPD.
Just so i can see if i can actually see the other aircraft and that my
firewall is correctly open.
I'll leave my aircraft on runway 24 @ EGPD so i can see the other end.

Thanks in advance for your help,

2006-03-10 Thread Justin Smithies
Just a quick question.

I am currently building a diy 737-300 cockpit , and i am going to link all the
real switches / lights etc to a pc that will read / write directly from the
FG prop tree based on values there.
So i take it the way this project is going that there will be switches and
inditcators + various variables in the FG prop tree eventually for every
instrument / electrical system.

 One thing I would like to know is it possible currently to add
 hotspots to individual 3D instruments.As far as I know you can
 only add a general hotspot sheet which covers the 3D instruments
 roughly infront of the pilot.This would mean that panels on overhead
 panels and centre isle stands would not be able to be activated by
 hotspots.As most of the system operation is controled by such panels
 we need a way of activating such panels that are not on the pilots
 instrument panels.
 Any ideas.

[Flightgear-devel] 737-300 project

2006-03-09 Thread Justin Smithies
Right i think Marcus is right, we should have group together and find out who
is doing what with regards to the 737-300.

I could setup a small site on my server that will list everybodies details of
what is being done by whom.
Also what and who is needed etc.

We could also maybe start sharing the 737-300 development code so we can all
test and give each other comments before it is posted to the cvs .

What does everyone think ?

I'll stop work on the electrical systems and leave it in Marcus's capable
hands as he seems further on than me.

I'll look at the list and pick another section to start on , maybe
hydraulics ?
I will let you guys know.

 Maybe because the fuel pump is driven off the engine accessory gearbox so
 if the engine is turning the fuel pump is working. unless the shaft to the
 gearbox
 shears or the fuel pump shaft shears.Then engine shutdown would be
 instantanious.

 Would it not be possible to write a nasal script that would detect the

 Before we go stuffing around it might be good if we find out how the real
 737 fuel delivery system works(it ain't a cessna).As it stands now if you
 activate the fuel cutoff the engine should shtdown and that pretty much
 is how the real aircraft works.

   setlistener(/some/switch, func {
   if (cmdarg().getBoolValue()) {
   print(turned on);
   } else {
   print(turned off);
   }
   });

 You can also define the function elsewhere and just call it like that:

   on_switch = func {
   ...
   }
   setlistener(/some/switch, on_switch);

 cmdarg() returns the listened-to property as props.Node object,
 so you can use it with all its methods (see $FG_ROOT/Nasal/props.nas),
 for example:

   print(cmdarg().getPath(),  has been changed to , cmdarg().getValue())

Getting errors saying it could not read script file engine.nas into module

Could it be that the values for the cuttoff and reverse should be true or
false not 0 or 1 .
If so can you rewrite that script so if i change ( toggle ) cutoff from false
to true and visaversa it will write to the reversed property either true or
false.
Then maybe you can kill me for all this hassle , but beleive me i do
appreciate the help you are providing me.

I found how to implement the script i added into the set.xml file

 Assuming that you only want changes from false to true,
 then you'd write something like that:

   last_cutoff = 0;
   setlistener(/engines/engine[0]/cutoff, func {
   var new_cutoff = cmdarg().getBoolValue();
   if (new_cutoff and !last_cutoff) {
   setprop(/engines/engine[0]/reverse, 1);
   }
   last_cutoff = new_cutoff;
   }, 1);

 ... because the function isn't really only called on property
 changes, but rather whenever the property is written to. Even
 if it's the same value that's written. The 1 in the last line
 makes sure that an initially true cutoff also sets the
 reverser, which you may or may not want.

 Its just a test so dont panic about what it actually does. Just so i can

 setlistener(/controls/engines/engine/cutoff, func {

 setprop(/controls/engines/engine/reverser, 0);
 } else {
 if (new_cutoff == 1 ){
 setprop(/controls/engines/engine/reverser, 1);

 It is supposed to read the property /controls/engines/engine/cutoff and if
 it is 0 set the property /controls/engines/engine/reverser to 0 and also if
 the cutoff changes to 1 then so should the reverser value change to 1.

 I seem to have the {} () ; wrong somewhere and maybe some other little
 errors.

[Flightgear-devel] 737-300 panel file

2006-03-06 Thread Justin Smithies
Dont know if anyone will find this usefull , but i have modified the
737-ifr-panel.xml so if the master bat switch is put off the pfd1 and pfd2
and the eicas all go off.

Mind you will have to set the /instrumentation/pfd1/servicable to true
and the same for pfd2 and eicas also.
Just add the above config to the 737 set file.

I also have a nasal file which maybe doesnt simulate the aircraft well but if
the master battery switch is put off it will kill the engines. ( cutoff )

Justin Smithies
?xml version=1.0?

!--
737 Full Panel
Based on John Check's Cessna 310 panel.
___

This is a panel configuration file for the open-source flight
simulator FlightGear (www.flightgear.org). The file is an XML-encoded
FlightGear property list defining the panel's background texture and
the location (and optionally, size) of the instruments that will
appear on the panel.

Each instrument is, itself, defined in an XML-encoded property list
in a separate file.

Co-ordinates are relative to the *bottom* left corner of the screen
(as in OpenGL). The total FlightGear window is always considered to
be 1024x768, whatever its actual display size on the screen. All
paths are relative to $FG_ROOT.

Note that the name of the element defining each instrument must be
different, or else instrument definitions will be overwritten:
that's not particularly XML-ish, but that's how property lists
work in FlightGear right now.

Each instrument has its own preferred width and height, but you can
override those by providing w../w and h../h properties with the
x.../x and y.../y properties.

[Flightgear-devel] nasal questions

2006-03-06 Thread Justin Smithies
I have setup my 737-300 so if i turn off the battery it kills the engines and
the cockpit instruments , now i know i need to read more on the 737
electrical systems but for now this is fine for me.
But how do i play a wav file when the engines go below the idle limit ?
I.e. i have a wav file of the engines running down. It would have to be looped
with pitch etc and vol.

Also i would like to implement a running up wav file for when they are
started.

I tell you what i have found that is near enough realistic.
If i kill the engines via the cutoff if im higher enough i can dive slightly
and get the engines to spin up again and start just as in a real aircraft.

[Flightgear-devel] 737-300 diy cockpit

2006-03-04 Thread Justin Smithies
Propert tree issues i'm having which didnt used to happen before.

Whilst looking at the property tree /engines/engine and /engines/engine[0]

I have noticed that if i change values like running to false they revert
straight back to true.

The same with things like the cutoff i'm sure this used to stop the engine but
it doesnt any longer.

Anybody help me out and let me know whats stopping these properties from
working.

 I don't experience such a thing with fresh update from CVS, for SimGear,

 Be sure your paths are still correct in the first wizard page.

 BTW, I added several pages to the Wiki. Tell me if they are informative

  No. Someone will need to ask if he approves the b1900d changes.

 Is there any reason why this nice feature can't be added to CVS now?

 Syd can speak for himself, but I know he was aware of the work to produce
 the GPWS quite some time ago and didn't object then... Of course the
 B1900D is not the only possible candidate to benefit from such a device
 anyway.

 Just wanted to raise the issue again - it would seem a shame for the work
 done to be forgotten about and wasted...

For starters turning off the fuel pump , the engine should start to become

I also noticed that none of the electrical systems can be switched off either.
I am trying to add as much realism i.e. switches etc to this as possible.

 To make that work on the 747, I had to pretty much can the fuel/engine

 Basically, it works as follows:

 Based on cockpit switches ( throttle, x-feed valves, boost pumps, cutoff
 switches) the sim calculates which tank is connected to which engine and
 if the line is open. It then sends the result to FG and onto JSBSim to
 instruct the engine model to draw the correct amount of fuel, based on
 rate and dt, from the correct tank. result is any tank can feed any
 engine and any engine can draw from any tank which is how the real
 airplane works. The code for JSBSim is in the tar file from MIADC or
 Scale. It is not part of the CVS tree or 0.9.9, source is avaialble but
 not my call to put it in.

Is it possible to make the speech louder than the aircraft noise ?
Does festival have a setting to increase the volume ?

 Turn on ATC Traffic if you want to hear AI pilots. Use the '-key

 KSFO you won't get ATC communication offered.) The tutorials will
 also speak to you.

 You can permanently enable /sim/sound/voices/enabled. The only
 disadvantage is that you get a few error messages if the server
 isn't running. You can safely ignore that. I'll fix that later
 (by submitting an sg patch :-).

 Festival --server is kicking out messages like:

 client(1) Tue Feb 21 13:29:46 2006 : rejected from localhost.localdomain
 not in access list

 I didn't see anything useful in the manual related to locating a config
 file and what the access list syntax looks like.

 Any hints?

 You should hear the tower there, too, if you tune in a tower frequency
 (see Menu-ATC-Frequencies). But non-KSFO personnel is a bit retarded.
 What they say may not make much sense. ;-)

 Yes. Don't use freeglut 2.4.0.  :-)   It's broken. Either use 2.2.0
 or CVS. Or even better: use SDL (./configure --enable-sdl)

[Flightgear-devel] 737 EICAS

2006-02-19 Thread Justin Smithies
A few more fixes to the EICAS on the 737 .

The fuel tank guages now resemble the EICAS on a real 737 .
Instead of all three tanks being numbered 2 there is now 1 , 2, and CTR

I have attatched the update rgb files and eicas.xml

Also i have corrected the paths so this should just drop into the standard 737
model
Maybe Curtis can commit this to the cvs ?

[Flightgear-devel] needles on guages

Hi can someone get me started by explaining how i get a needle on the left oil
preesure gauge. I know what property to
use /engines/engine[0]/oil-preesure-psi

I need to know what variables tell it where it is placed etc.
Once i see how one is done i can continue and add the rest etc.

Please if you use examples add it to the 737 eicas.xml so i can see myself.

Cheers in advance

[Flightgear-devel] 737-800

2006-02-17 Thread Justin Smithies
Hi all,
  I've been trying to modify the 737-300 to a 737-800 , well upgrade.
I have modified the engines from data on the net and some other variables.
The model is untouched except for it is now in Lufthansa colours.
Also the cockpit requires work too and its still 2d.
I have modified the sounds though so the engines sound a bit more realistic
when you open the throttles etc and also the rumble along the runway is a
little better.
If anyone is interested in helping me with this please let me know and i'll
email you the file.

Cheers
Justin Smithies

  Version:   $Id: c172p.xml,v 1.15 2006-01-12 15:07:14 ehofman Exp $
  Description:   Cessna C-172

I can even use the http sever option and its fine.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] socket output problems

2006-02-15 Thread Justin Smithies
How Curtis as im trying to run Johns Glass cockpit software demo on the same
machine and i cant get FG to send data to it.

Ive set his software to use port 6000 and my i.p. 192.168.1.3 it runs up and
appears to be awaiting data.

Then i run FG with

fgfs --opengc=socket,out,30,192.168.1.3,6000,udp

And all i get is Error writing data.

But if i issue FG with a dummy i.p like 192.168.1.6 no errors, so that just
confuses me as you said the error was because it got no reply from the
running service.
There is nothing on 192.168.1.6 .

Anymore ideas ?

 There's no reason you can't have FlightGear send udp packets to another
 application on the same machine. You may or may not want to do that,
 but it certainly is possible.

 Curt.

[Flightgear-devel] wish list

2006-02-11 Thread Justin Smithies
For dualhead displays i feel or rather need this feature adding.

My two screens are setup as one virtual screen over 2048*768. ( 2 x 1024*768 )
( Running Linux , nvidia 5200 dual head ))
I would like an option to be added to the FG command line that would remove so
much of the screen on the right so where my two monitors join its like having
the window strut seperators.
At the moment you can end up seeing 2 runway marker lines as the screen goes
off one to the other.

Anybody else agree ?

Is this possible say --dual-head ???

Regards,
Justin Smithies

Re: [Flightgear-devel] wish list

2006-02-11 Thread Justin Smithies
Would it really be that much of a problem to code to make FG accept an option
like --dual-head= ( numerical value in pixels )

Which would tell FG to redraw the last half of the screen ( no pixels from
halfway in ) on the next half of the screen.

This would fix the display issue and it would be tatally adjustable depending
on your monitor sizes.

FG would only do this if the above option was selected.

Surely that wouldn't cause too much of an issue ?

 You'd be better off just running a separate FlightGear instance on the
 second monitor and slaving it. The whole idea behind having a
 multiple screen setup like twinview is that it mimicks a continuous
 area with no boundaries. Putting those screen boundaries back in when
 the video subsystem has worked so hard to eliminate them is a metaphor
 collision and a design problem.

 And on a practical level, those screen boundaries aren't visible to
 software anyway. Trying to intuit the geometry of the user's desktop
 (literally!) is never going to work well.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] dual head linux FG

2006-02-10 Thread Justin Smithies
Right ive got FG to use 2 screens , i just have one more problem which
probably FG cant do yet.
When i bank left or right the both screens bank but do not join up at the
meeting point if you know what i mean.
One screens scenery is higher than the other.

This is my command line to run FG

fgfs --enable-game-mode --geometry=2048x768 --aircraft=737 --airport-id=EGPD
--runway=16 --enable-real-weather-fetch --bpp=32 --enable-ai-models
--enable-horizon-effect --enable-auto-coordination

Any ideas ?

 That's more of a Glut/SDL limitation. Choosing full screen just
 forwards that request to the underlying toolkit, which uses its own
 logic to decide how to fulfill it.

 Note that if you have twinview already running successfully, you can
 run FlightGear fullscreen without a window manager to get the same
 effect.

[Flightgear-devel] Displaying fullscreen PFD2

2006-02-06 Thread Justin Smithies
So help me out guys please.

If i want to run FG on one pc with dual head card for scenery , and use the
other running FG and networked to the 1st. If i modify my 737 on the 2nd pc
to only display a fullscreen PFD2 will this take its readings from the master
pc doing the scenery etc ?

Also to blow up the PFD2 to full screen 1024 * 768 how would this apply in the
X1 X2 and Y1 Y2 settings as i dont quite understand them yet?
I know i will have to draw my own textures to the required size its just the
placing bit that gets me.
I'll paste a bit of the PFD2 code in so you can see what i mean.

layer
   namebackground/name
   texture
pathAircraft/737-test/Instruments/Textures/ah-face2.rgb/path
x10.0/x1
y10.0/y1
x21.0/x2
y21.0/y2
   /texture
   w250/w
   h250/h
   transformations
transformation
  typex-shift/type
  offset0/offset
 /transformation
 transformation
  typey-shift/type
  offset0/offset
/transformation
   /transformations
  /layer

Any help will be much appreciated.

Justin Smithies
