Re: [gentoo-user] downloading from cell phone to Gentoo : solved

2024-01-29 Thread Philip Webb
Thanks for all the advice offered recently.

The simple method which works is

  (1) enable 'fuse-fs' in kernel ;
  (2) re-merge Kio-extras with USE="mtp" ;
  (3) wake phone, plug in USB connection at both ends ;
  (4) on phone, tap 'allow' to access data ;
  (5) on Gentoo, Dolphin shows 'SAMSUNG_Android' under 'Devices' ;
  (6) goto 'Internal storage/DCIM/Camera' ;
  (7) view w Gwenview, which offers to save the photo as your choice.

This relies on KDE's internal use of Fuse, which simplifies actions.
The device appears as /dev/libmtp...
which is a symlink to /dev/bus/003/009 (or similar),
which is not a block device & can't be mounted via 'mount'.
KDE uses some version of Fuse to access it & offer its contents.

HTH others.

I too just installed a new kernel (6.6.13). My notes told me to do :

  make && make firmware_install && make modules_install
  mount /boot
  cp arch/x86_64/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz--gentoo-r
  cp System.map /boot/System.map--gentoo-r

which worked with the appropriate version numbers inserted,
but not before it choked on 'make firmware_install', which has disappeared.
I too use Lilo, a simple + reliable boot manager.

I have long wondered why the compile stage takes so long :
it compiles innumerable  .o  files,
which seem to involve config options I haven't chosen.
The new kernel image is size 17633728 via 'ls -l /boot' : is that correct ?
It does indeed boot & there are no changes in behaviour.

I need to add 'fuse' support to my kernel
to allow file transfer from my cell phone,
so it seemed sensible to update to the latest stable version.
The current version is 6.1.27-gentoo-r1 , which I compiled 230726.

I was very surprised to find that the latest stable version is 6.1.67 ,
tho' 6.7.1 is listed as testing with others in between.
Isn't this a bit slow ? -- no complaint re the hard-working dev's, of course.
Have there been problems with more recent versions ?
I'm reluctant to use a testing-version kernel.

All are 'Gentoo-sources', which is what I've always used since 2003.

[gentoo-user] downloading from cell phone to Gentoo

2024-01-17 Thread Philip Webb
I want to be able to download photos from my new cellphone to Gentoo.
The phone is a Samsung A14 5G ; its pet name is Athene.
I use KDE to manage my desktops on my desktop machine ANB6.

I've tried doing it with Manjaro & it works. It is vital
to have Athene awake when the USB connection is plugged into ANB6 :
a notice pops up asking to 'Allow', which I did.
Manjaro puts up its own notice, announcing a new device & asking what to do ;
I opened it in Dolphin, which shows Athene's Gallery
under  GalaxyA145G -> Internal storage -> DCIM -> Camera ,
which lists the photo images ;
Dolphin can then copy them to its own file system readily
& Gwenview shows them correctly.

Normally on Gentoo, I mount devices -- eg USB sticks -- by hand,
ie 'mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/usb' or 'musb' for short (via .bashrc ).
I've looked at KDE device settings under Hardware -> Removable Storage ,
checked the box 'on attach' & tried with each of the 3 offerings,
ie 'All known / Attached / Disconnected Devices', but no joy.

Athene shows a recharging message, but nothing else happens, incl in ANB6
(Athene does indeed recharge while this is going on).
There is no change in output from 'ls /dev' or in Dolphin
(my usual file manager is Krusader, but Dolphin works for Manjaro).

Manjaro suggests soomething called 'MTP' is involved,
perhaps 'Media Transfer Protocol' (?).

Does anyone have any suggestions how to get this to work on Gentoo ?

IIRC we both live in/near Toronto, so no doubt Big Bad Bell is responsible.
I could no longer use my ISP via Bell, as they can't use fibre
(this was recently changed by the Feds, but no doubt only after some delay).
Hence I'm now relying on my landlord's free Wifi
or my new cellphone's Hotspot facility for the I/net
(I fired Bell & now use Koodo, a sub of Telus),
but retain my ISP's mail service ( CAD 3 / mth ),
for which I too need to authenticate myself for access.

My notes tell me (set up Mutt in new machine ANB6) :

  'USE="mbox" emerge mutt procmail fetchmail ssmtp'
  cp fr ANB5 : /etc/ssmtp/  ~/.fetchmailrc  ~/.procmailrc
  /etc/group : add '' to 'ssmtp'

and (authenticate for mail access) :

  Send mail via Wifi : new procedure, as prev'ly no security needed ;
   now CIN has to be told who it's dealing w.
  We now need a hostname, so add 'anb6' to  /etc/hostname ;
in  /etc/dhcpcd.conf , add 'hostname anb6' ;
make sure 'hostname' service is in 'default' runlevel.
  Mutt uses its own 'smtp', so we need to add in .muttrc :
'set ssl_starttls=yes
 set ssl_force_tls=yes
 set smtp_url="smtp://@smtp.ca.inter.net:25"
 set smtp_pass=""'
  We also need in  /etc/hosts : '127.0.0.1 anb6 localhost'

I don't know anything re Port 587 : how do I find out my port number ?

BTW I do recommend  ca.inter.net  (their name) for I/net + e-mail :
I've used them happily for 15 years ; they are in Waterloo, Ont.

My experience for some time has been that Qt pkgs block one another,

I recommend a look at Mutt, which I've used very happily since c 1998 ,

My user is in 'tty wheel usb input video' (among others).

I've corrected that & checked that Pam is running & Udev is in 'sysinit'.

Ditto for  /dev/dri/card0 .

Yes. I have "evdev" + "radeon vesa" in 'make.conf'.
'xf86-video-ati/vesa' are installed,
as is 'xorg-server' + all its requirements ("dependencies").

> There should be a fb0 device listed:

ANB5 has  /dev/fb0  /dev/dri/card0  with  660  permitions, ANB6 hasn't
(those are my names for the present + new machines).

> You'll also need to have emerged a Desktop Environment
> or at least a window manager: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Window_manager

I've installed 'twm xterm' to test X for now.
I will install KDE for regular use later.

'.xinitrc' is

  #xscreensaver &
  numlockx
  exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/twm

ie the same as in ANB5, but substituting Twm for Plasma.

230614 Jack wrote :

> what does /var/log/Xorg.0.log show ?

It has these errors (EE) in the X log file :

  Failed to load module "fbdev" (does not exist)
  Open /dev/dri/card0 : no such directory or file
  VESA (0) : cannot read int vect
  Screens found, but none has a useable configuration

Do I need 'fbdev' or 'card0' ? Whatever is "int vect" ?

When I try to 'startx' as user, the log file is in ~/.local/share/xorg ,
which is also where it is in ANB5. When I try 'Xorg -configure',
it produces nothing of use & dumps it in my home directory (ugh).

I can probably cut the Gordian knot by emerging Xorg-server with 'suid'.
How insecure is that for a single-user system in a house ?
The Elogind approach has worked in ANB5 since Aug 2020.

I can't make much of a useful comparison between the 2 machines,
as ANB5 dates from 2015, ie long before the 'elogind' affair in 2020,
& it has Nvidia graphics, whereas ANB6 has cutting-edge AMD.

BTW System Rescue + Mint (live USB) load modules for AMDGPU,
which seems to be the latest graphics offering ;
I need to find some firmware to get it to work
(enabling AMDGPU in the kernel causes the boot process to stall
with a message re missing firmware).
There are in fact 2 graphics tools in ANB6,
one in the CPU (AMD), the other on the Mobo (Gigabyte).
How can I tell which one the machine is trying to use ?

I will continue to poke around, but further advice is very welcome.
Please read my comments above carefully (smile).

[gentoo-user] can't start X as user

2023-06-13 Thread Philip Webb
My new machine has no problem with graphics using System Rescue etc
nor using 'startx' as root with Gentoo, but it refuses to start as user.

I've had a series of errors :

  parse_vt_settings : can't open /dev/tty0 (permission denied)

after adding my user to 'tty input' in 'group' :

  can't open virtual console 7 : permission denied

after adding 'elogind' to 'default' runlevel & starting it :

  xf86EnableIO : failed to enable I/O ports -03ff
   (operation not permitted)

yes, my user is in the 'video' group & 'xorg-server' has USE="elogind" .

In my current machine, there is a /dev/fb0 with permission 660 .
but there is no such device in the new machine.

I've looked at several "solved" cases of the same error messages,
but they don't seem to help my problem.

Can anyone offer possible solutions ?

Re: [gentoo-user] using Wifi in a new machine : solved

2023-06-10 Thread Philip Webb
After much investigation, I've finally got Wifi working in my new machine.

There were 2 serious problems :
the firmware had been updated to a new version number (7961 from 7921),
which I was able to find in System Rescue /lib/firmware
(it wasn't in the latest Gentoo firmware pkg).

Then many tries failed to get Wpa-supplicant to start via RC :
every time, it failed to start because it couldn't find an interface
(the failure seems to be due to Udev/Dhcpcd/W-S tripping over one another).
Finally, I removed it from the default runlevel
& started it after boot + login via 'rc-service ... start'.
There's a 15 sec delay, then 'ip a' shows carrier + IP numbers
(it doesn't change the name from 'wlan0', but that doesn't matter).
I've aliased the start command as 'wifi' in /root/.bashrc ,
which allows an easy start-up after every reboot
(I insist on long-standing UNIX procedure
& do all system management in a root console).

The w-p conf file I'm using is as simple as cb ,
showing only SSID PSK priority .

This is a desktop system in the basement of a downtown house :
the Wifi server is upstairs over my head.

FYI for anyone else who finds her/himself stuck in this way.

there's an awful lot of info, but some tiny note mb the solution (grin).

I tried both, but no change.

This Wifi belongs to my landlord & is just over my head in the house.
IIRC it runs on Ubuntu (he uses Mac for his home-office).
He's amiable, but no tech specialist (he distributes movies for a living).

> Either way, look at 'man wpa_passphrase' if you ever want to generate a key.

The password looks like 'M343477M' (all different characters).
It works with SR + Mint.

Today's investigations :

(1) I copied the BT- firmware ( 2 files) from SR
into /lib/firmware/mediatek on the new machine : no change.

'dmesg | grsp firmware' gives

  Spectre V2 : Enabling Restricted Speculation for firmware calls.
  Loading firmware : regulatory.db
  Loading firmware : regulatory.db.p7s
  mediatek /WIFI_MT7961_patch_mcu_1_2_hdr.bin
  mediatek /WIFI_RAM_CODE_MT7961_1.bin [repeated once]

At the end of dmesg it says :

  mt7921e : renamed from wlan0

(2) w_s dox : one suggested conf file has simply :

  network {
ssid="simple"
psk=""
priority=5
  }

This makes no difference.

(3) You didn't comment on the failure of w-s to start in default runlevel.
The final lines before login are :

  INIT : Entering runlevel : 3
  Waiting for uevents to be processed ...
  [RED] Could not find a wireless interface
  [RED] ERROR : wpa_supplicant failed to start
  starting DHCP client Daemon
  Mounting network filesystems
  Starting local

The first red msg is from the w-s script in /etc/init.d .
I wonder whether w-s sb trying to start before the DHCP deamon ?
It has no difficulty starting via 'rc-service' after login.

Unfortunately, I can't explore how SF + Mint handle this,
as they both use Systemd, not Openrc, which I am using.

I'll look thro' the /usr/share dox as carefully as I can.
Your comment on my final query wb very welcome
or any other thoughts you might have.

Re: [gentoo-user] using Wifi in a new machine : progress

2023-06-01 Thread Philip Webb
Thanks for all the help so far.

I've solved the firmware problem.
The needed files weren't in the latest stable version of linux-firmware
nor in the masked version (after much hassle unmasking it),
but they are in both System Rescue + Mint /lib/firmware/mediatek .
They are versions 7922 and 7961 with corresponding RAM_CODE files.

I copied them into the new machine in the same-named dir, 'unxz' them
& after reboot 'dmesg' announced that it had loaded 7961
& 'ip a' showed a 4th interface 'wlp5s0'.  So far, so good.

What is still not good is that that interface has "NO-CARRIER".
Also, 'rc-status' after a reboot shows wpa_supplicant as STOPPED.

'rc-service -v wpa_supplicant start' gets it STARTED,
but 'ip a' still shows "NO-CARRIER".
I tried 'ip link set wlp5s0 carrier on',
but was told "operation not supported".

w_s seems to be finding its conf file
at  /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf ,
but 'wpa_cli' continues to say "can't link to wpa_supplicant".

I have checked the service name + password are correct in the conf file.

/lib/firmware/ is the dir with firmware files.

It is already installed (230404) , presumably as part of Stage 3.
That date shouldn't be too old.

'dmesg | grep firmware' shows 10 identical lines :

  Loading firmware : mediatek/WIFI_MT7921_patch_mcu_1_2_hdr.bin :

I don't understand these lines (smile).

SR shows no record of loading via 'dmesg' ;
Mint ends with a lot of Bluetooth + mt7921e references.
Mint mentions a firmware " 01 " ( 4 underlines ).

no sign of firmware files.

I've installed 'netifrc' ; 'dhcpcd' was installed long ago.

So no progress today. I can try copying the firmware files from SR/Mint
-- everything under /lib/firmware/ in SR/Mint & see if it helps.

Your final note was a link to someone's pains using mt7921e,
which he sad in the end was defective software.

That's interesting, but it doesn't take me much further (smile).
Yes, this is in the early stage of installing in a new machine.
Wifi works easily with System Rescue + Mint (running from USB stick).
The minimal installer -- presumably you mean Stage 3 --
didn't include 'wpa_supplicant' & I emerged it later.

Your experience suggests there mb some pkg missing, which I need.
Do you -- or anyone else -- have any idea what it might be ?

Perhaps there's still some firmware missing,
but I'm having difficulty identifying what it could be
or where I would find it.

Any more substantial advice is very welcome.

Re: [gentoo-user] using Wifi in a new machine

2023-05-31 Thread Philip Webb
Thanks to Michael for his helpful advice.
I've narrowed the problem down somewhat,
but Wifi still doesn't work on Gentoo, tho' it does on Mint + SR.

The difference seems to be that when I enter 'lshw -class network' in Mint,
I get "network | description : Wireless interface ... ",
but in Gentoo it says "network | description : Network controller ... ".
Also, under "configuration:", Mint says "broadcast=yes, driver=nt7921e,
driver_version=5.15.0-generic, firmware=__91-20220209 150915,
latency=0, multicast=yes, wireless=IEEE 802.11",
whereas Gentoo says only "driver=mt7921e, latency=0".

'lsmod' gives the same result on both systems, incl firmware.

It looks as if modules + firmware are all installed,
but for some reason Gentoo isn't recognising the device as Wifi.

What might be missing ?

BTW there appears to be a pkg 'rfkill' :
on Mint 'rfkill' reports "Bluetooth hci0 | wlan phy0", both unblocked.

Any further advice wb most welcome (smile).

My Mobo manual (Gigabyte X570S Aero G) says :
  "Wireless Module : Intel Wifi 6 AX200 ; AMD Wifi 6E RZ608 (MT7921K)".
The Intel firmware site says the firmware you name above is correct for it.
(I don't understand why they give separate specs for Intel/AMD :
my CPU is AMD)

'net' didn't exist in /etc/conf.d , so i created it with your content.

'ip a' + 'ip link show' both list 3 interfaces :
  (1) lo ; (2) enp6so (my landline) ; (3) sit0@NONE  mtu1480 ... .

With SR + Mint, the interface is shown as 'wlp5s0' (see below),
which I've written in 'net' in place of 'wlan0' (3 times),
eg 'config_wlp5s0="dhcp"'.

(The landline interface works correctly)

I've done that.

> 5. Then start the wpa_supplicant service :
>   'rc-service -v wpa_supplicant start'.

I've added it to start-up services with 'rc-update add wpa_supplicant',
then rebooted & it shows up as "started". 'dhcpcd' also starts at boot.

When I boot, the messages say 2 relevant things :

  "Caching service dependencies ...
  Successfully initialised wpa_supplicant ... "

  "INIT : Entering Runlevel 3
  could not find wireless interface
  ERROR : wpa_supplicant failed to start
  Starting DHCP client Daemon ... [ok] "

The problem isn't in the new machine's hardware :
System Rescue + Mint both offer to start Wifi & succeed ;
'ip a' for both shows an extra line for "wlp5s0",
which appears to be the wireless interface the new Gentoo can't find ;
it shows 'no carrier' before they start Wifi, which disappears afterwards.

I've looked at their  /lib/modules/  /lib/firmware/  /etc  dirs,
but don't see anything to help (both use Systemd ; I use Openrc).

So for some reason my embryonic Gentoo system can't find the interface,
a very basic problem.

Tnanks to Michael, whose advice helped upto a point.
Can anyone suggest how I can get Gentoo to find the wireless interface ?

Thanks to both respondents for their advice.

I solved the problem by changing Fstab col 6 for '/' to '1',

After that '/' was mounted RW & I could proceed.

[gentoo-user] new machine : root partition mounted RO

2023-05-25 Thread Philip Webb
The new machine I've built is working well in other ways,
I've gone thro' the 'change-root' steps,
compiled the kernel -- 6.1.27-gentoo-r1 -- ,
configured Lilo -- which has never let me down in 20 years -- ,
created Fstab & rebooted. No problem booting into the new system,
except that it insists on mounting the root filesystem 'read-only'.

It's only '/' : the other fs's listed in Fstab are mounted RW
& I can edit a test file & save it there ; if I try to do that in /etc ,
which is on the root partition, it refuses to save it.

Also, I can't create a user, as it can't alter  /etc .

Dmesg shows signs of something wrong ; the gist is

  nvme :03:00.0: platform quirk: setting simple suspend
  nvme nvme0: pci function :03:00.0

  nvme nvme0: Shutdown timeout set to 10 seconds
  nvme nvme0: 12/0/0 default/read/poll queues
  nvme0n1: p1 p2 p3 p4 p5 p6 p7 p8 p9 p10

  EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p2): orphan cleanup on readonly fs
  EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
   Quota mode: none.
  VFS: Mounted root (ext4 filesystem) readonly on device 259:2.

  Adding 32767996k swap on /dev/nvme0n1p3.
   Priority:-2 extents:1 across:32767996k SS
  EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p7): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
   Quota mode: none.
  EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p8): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
   Quota mode: none.
  EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p9): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
   Quota mode: none.
  EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p10): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
   Quota mode: none.

Those are the only mentions of a 'nvme' device (an M2 SSD).

As above, I've tested nvme0n1p10 & it's mounted RW.

I've tried 'fsck /dev/nvme0n1p2' & Gparted "check" (via System Rescue) ;
both report no problem very quickly :

  fsck : "clean, nn/nn files, nn/nn blocks".
  Gparted : "completed : calibrate ; check for errors + fix them ;
   grow fs to fill system".

 lilo.conf explicitly says 'read-write' twice, incl globally.

Could it be some kernel option ? 'grep' shows no 'read_only' or similar.

Can anyone offer advice ? -- please read my desciption above carefully.

The problem was 'make oldconfig', which used a 5 year-old .config .
For some reason, the resulting .config insisted on installing
the Realtek driver, which wasn't available.

I cut the Gordian knot by moving the other .config's out of the way
& doing a raw 'make menuconfig'. Then the kernel compiled.
If it needs further tweaking, esp for missing drivers, I can do it later.

It's too late to do further steps today,
so we'll see what happens when I try booting from the new kernel.

Thanks for the various pieces of help.

I'm trying to install Gentoo in my new machine
& have got to the step of compiling a kernel.
I used the config file from my present machine, did 'make oldconfig'

The 'make' stage goes on for a long time, then crashes doing
'UPD drivers/base/firmware_loader/builtin/rtl_nic/rtl8168g-2.fw.gen.S'
with message "make [5] *** No rule to make target
'lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8168g-2.fw' needed by 'drivers/base/firmware_loader/
builtin/rtl_nic/rtl8168g-2.fw.gen.o' Stop".

The relevant line in Menuconfig is 'DeviceDrivers > NetworkDeviceSupport >
EthernetDriverSupport' under 'Realtek devices'.
I've tried it with 'Realtek8169/8168/...' 'Y' or 'M' or 'N'
& also with 'Realtek devices' as 'N'. I also tried a 'make clean'.
The same error goes on happening.

Since I don't have anything by Realtek for networking

[gentoo-user] using Wifi in a new machine

2023-05-10 Thread Philip Webb
Thanks again for the advice recently + earlier re my new machine (ANB6).

I've got the hardware working properly with Mageia (installed on HDD).
I've partitioned the drives ( NVMe M2 SSD + HDD ).
I've copied Stage 3 to the appropriate partition on the SSD.
I'm following the notes I made when I built the present machine (ANB5) 2015.

I'm going to have to have the I/net connected as I install stuff.
For that I have a choice of landline via 'dhcpcd' or Wifi,
which is available via System Rescue (10.00) & which is faster here.

Can anyone explain how I can get Wifi working at this early point

then discovered that it was in fact physically bad,
so 'mke2fs' wasn't needed today. I used another formatted stick instead.

Thanx to both + Jack as well.

[gentoo-user] where is 'mke2fs' ?

2022-11-17 Thread Philip Webb
I need to rewrite the filesystem on a USB stick after it got damaged.
My notes tell me to use 'mke2fs', but 'which' doesn't find it :
has it been replaced by something else ?
I have 'e2fsprogs' installed, but there's no 'man' file for it
& it doesn't seem to create filesystems.
There is a utility 'sys-fs/genext2fs', which I emerged & looked at,
but it's not clear whether it does the simple job I need.

Can anyone advise ?

There's the Wayback Machine, which tries to archive all I/net pages ever.
I've never used it, but it should have copies of man pages going back,
which would allow you to reconstruct the history of the commands.

Intel seems to offer inferior product for higher price : comparison only.

AMD : I want  8  cores with  16  threads.
I want graphics + cooling included with the CPU.
PCIe 3.0 is adequate for what I do : with 32 GB memory
everything sb compilable there with no need to use the SSD ;
ANB5 (my present machine) has DDR3, so ANB6's DDR4 wb faster.
Price differences aren't important in themselves among these choices.
There is free WiFi where I live, tho' landline mb better for security.

Thanks for the advice so far : further comments are very welcome.

[gentoo-user] new machine : on-going frustration

2022-09-15 Thread Philip Webb
Back in April 2022, I asked for advice here re parts for a new machine (ANB6)
& got some very helpful info (thanks to everyone).
Since then, it hasn't worked out very well
& I'm still relying on my 7-year-old machine (ANB5).

I want an AMD CPU, based on past experience ;
I prefer a Gigabyte mobo ditto, but will consider other makes.
I would like to have PCIe 4.0 , which is much faster than 3.0 ,
to improve Gentoo compile times ; I don't do gaming.
I would like to avoid a separate graphics card,
which are expensive & seem today to be designed for gaming enthusiasts.
I want to buy from a physical store, not delivered by an on-line order,
in case there's a defect, so that I can easily take it back to the store.

Looking at the offerings from Canada Computers, my most convenient store,
which I have used for all 5 of my previous home-built machines,
my impression is that if you get PCIe 4.0 ,
you don't get CPU graphics, but have to buy a separate graphics card ;
if you have built-in graphics in the CPU, you get only PCIe 3.0.

I might be willing to get an Intel CPU,
but in their specifications there's no mention of PCIe (3 or 4) :
is this an accident or are PCIe's confined to AMD ?
Intel seems to be a quite different world from AMD today.

Does anyone have any useful advice or suggestions ?

After some sleep & investigation, I found the problem, which is with Gvim.
The gtk+ gtk+2 USE flags have been dropped for Gvim-9 ,
which now defaults to the Motif GUI, which won't start from CLI :
"E25: GUI cannot be used: Not enabled at compile time".
This cb avoided by using USE="-motif" , which defaults to using Gtk:3 ,
& Gvim starts from CLI as it should.

Gentoo Bug 831250 covers removing the gtk USE flags.
I have added a comment as above & we'll see what the devs decide to do.

Mint Linux with its Cinnamon desktop is probably what you want.

Gentoo is typically for people who build their own machines
& want to choose their own selection of software to install in them.

[gentoo-user] new machine : probable parts for comment

2022-05-13 Thread Philip Webb
Thanks for the detailed advice, esp Frank + Dale + also Wols + Perkins.
These are my proposed parts for ANB6, wh I will buy from Canada Computers ;
prices are in CAD, of course ; a few further comments from me below :

CPU : AMD : CPAMD00131 : Ryzen 7 : 5700G :  8-core 16-thread : $ 388
 Socket AM4 : 3,8 / 4,6 GHz : Radeon Graphix Wreath Stealth

Mobo : MBGIG00145 : Gigabyte : X570 Aorus elite WIFI : $ 220
dual PCIe 4.0 M.2 : Intel dual-band 802.11ac wireless
front USB Type C : RGB Fusion 2.0

Memory : MEKIT00523 : Kingston Fury Beast : 2 x 16 GB : DDR4 3200 MHz : $ 160

SSD : SSKIT00120 : Kingston KC3000 : 1 TB : PCIe Gen4 : NVMe M.2
   R 7000 MB/s ; W 6000 MB/s : $ 190

HDD : HDSEA00016 : Seagate IronWolf : 4 TB : CMR :
   SATA 6 Gb/s : 5900 RPM : 64 MB Cache : 3 Yr Warranty : $ 110

Case : CSDCL00015 : Deepcool D-Shield V2 ATX : Compact Mid Tower Case : $ 60
   CSDCL00019 : Deepcool E-Shield : Mid Tower Chassis,
Black, Tempered Glass, 120mm Fan, Radiator Support,
E-ATX/ATX/MicroATX/MiniITX : $ 60

Power : PSTHL7 : Thermaltake Smart White : 700 W
 80 PLUS Certified Power Supply : $ 80  [[ total $ 1268 ]]

Comments : the machine is intended to last 7 years ,
so I'm going for more power + speed than I'm likely to use today ;
of course, I don't want to waste CAD, but will pay more for better value ;
I don't do gaming, but I do need a powerful machine for Gentoo compiling.

CPU : based on Frank's recommendation ; I prefer AMD.
Mobo : Canada Computers say this is often bought with the CPU ;
  my present machine (ANB5) has a Gigabyte mobo, as has its predecessor ;
  it says it can support PCIe 4.0, which matches the SSD ;
  I'ld like to have WIFI available, tho' I may carry on with landline.
Memory : the mobo will accept  32 GB  sticks, but I don't need them ;
  I've had good experiences with Kingston.
SSD : PCIe 4 is much faster than PCI 3 ; 1 TB is enough.
HDD : I heard the warnings & this is CMR ;
  I also heard Frank's advice re spin-speed : this is lower.
Case : I'm inclined to get '19',
  but wonder if there's a serious diffence between 'ATX' vs 'ATXe' :
  any advice wb welcome.
Power : the summary says "700 W", but the specs say "500 W" :
  the price is a bit more than others which are 500 W
  & I can ask in the store, so I'm willing to assume "500" is a typo.

Any further advice wb very welcome (smile to everyone).

Clearly, I need to look up component specs on the I/net

I would like to listen to some classical music

[gentoo-user] ssh problem

2021-12-26 Thread Philip Webb
I want to login to a remote site using 'ssh'.
The response I get is "Unable to negotiate with port :
no matching host key type found. Their offer: ssh-rsa,ssh-dss".
Yesterday, I updated 'openssh' :

  Installed versions:  8.8_p1-r4^t([2021-12-25 06:12:24])
   (X ssl -X509 -audit -debug -hpn -kerberos -ldns -libedit -livecd -pam -pie
-scp -sctp -security-key -selinux -static -test -xmss ABI_MIPS="-n32"
KERNEL="linux")

Occasionally, I have had a similar problem trying to do this,
but ordinarily it has worked smoothly.

Does anyone have helpful suggestions how to get past the blockage ?

[gentoo-user] screensaver problem

2021-10-08 Thread Philip Webb
I have Xscreensaver started by  .xinit  & it runs as it should ;
each saver is set to run for 3 min . When I'm asleep, I kill Xscreensaver
& the monitor blanks after 5 min , which is also what is expected.

However, something is telling the monitor to blank after 5 min ,
even when Xscreensaver is running. The 1st saver runs for 3 min ,
then the next one starts & runs for 2 min , then the screen blanks.
When I hit a key or move the mouse, the screen wakes up
& if there's no activity for 5 min Xscreensaver takes over
& the savers run for 5 min before the screen blanks again.
Instead, the savers should run continually till activity resumes.

Can anyone suggest what is telling the monitor to blank after 5 min
regardless of whether Xscreensaver is running or not ?

So you emerge both together :
I've never run into a version of your case where that wasn't the solution.
And I don't expect anything like that to happen

I'm using Qt 5.15.2-r3 , which is stable, but -r10 is still testing.
Probably, the correct version wb part of 5.15.3 or 5.16.1 or similar.

Meanwhile, the advice has to be don't manipulate PNGs using Gwenview :
convert them to JPG first.

That is the key, but it doesn't work the way you suggest.

I cut the Gordian knot Alexander-fashion :
I simply unmerged the  7  objecting pkgs via 'emerge -C ... ',
ie attica kactivities kconfig kcoreaddons kcrash kglobalaccel kwindowsystem.
after that, I was able to update the whole list of pkgs without a problem.

This has to be a bug in Portage,
at least in the sense of an unintended + obstructive feature.
Portage ought to be able to recognise when a set of pkgs
are creating destructive circular dependencies among themselves
& resolve the conflict by updating all of them together.
This sort of traffic-jam happens regularly & has done so for many years :
one case is Qt, which forces the user to unmerge the whole set,
then merge the updates as a set too.

Perhaps one of our hard-working unpaid devs is listening ... (smile).

Tibor Nagy of KDE Bugzilla has replied very promptly :

  My guess this happens due to botched gamma handling.
  Washed out images are a prime symptom of that kind of bugs.
  Seems like when a PNG gAMA chunk is present,
  Gwenview applies the gamma transform in the opposite direction it should,
  thus the washed out images. Seems to be Qt bug, already fixed in 5.15.x :
  https://github.com/qt/qtbase/commit/de2c3ccd49cb89e0c6912da3b03705a36ef03946

As you can see from the link above, some coder forgot to invert a value,
using 'gamma' when it sb '1/gamma'.

The patch is dated 'June 11', so it make take awhile yet to reach Gentoo.

Meanwhile, I have 2 workarounds which are in fact improvements for me.
I have amended the Imagemagick 'import' command I use for screenshots
to produce them as JPGs, which cb safely cropped already via Gwenview.
Alternatively, Firefox will make screenshots via R-click on its window
& the area to be grabbed cb marked on the screen, so already cropped.

as it appeared suddenly after a KDE update in spring 2020.

That makes no sense : the pkg cited is Kglobalaccel-5.85.0-r1 ,
which isn't going to want an earlier version of another KDE pkg.

That cb relevant, but I've explored further & have some results.

When I crop a JPG image with Fotoxx or Gwenview,
then view it with Gwenview, the colors remain vivid ;
this is true whether I rename the new version in Gwenview or not.

It's only when I crop a PNG image in Gwenview
& save it in place (ie with the same name), that the colors are faded
& that's only when viewed with Gwenview, not eg with Feh.

So I can avoid the problem either by cropping only with Fotoxx
or by renaming them whenever I do it with Gwenview
or by converting PNGs to JPGs before cropping them.

The bad case does look like a Gwenview bug,
but KDE bugs tend to disappear into the ocean, if reported.

Thanks for the comments. I will try redoing the faded versions,
tho' that will mean getting them from the I/net again.
Any further suggestions re causes of the bad case are welcome.

Gwenview says it's showing it at  100 % .
Both viewers show it at the same size on my monitor.

The problem doesn't seem to have anything to do with aliasing,
which corrects jagged lines etc.

I've tried changing all the various settings in Gwenview config separately,
but nothing changes.

NB this happens only with images which I've cropped using Gwenview,
ie simply removed some outer parts of a larger original.
In itself, that shouldn't change the colors in the new version.

I have made screenshots of the different images via Imagemagick,
which each show the same image in both Gwenview + Feh
-- ie Gwenview shows the Feh test as vivid & Feh shows the other as faded --
& display how the former is faded, while the latter is vivid.
I'll attach them to a separate e-mail to your address off the list.

It remains a puzzle. Any further comments from anyone are most welcome.

[gentoo-user] faded images with Gwenview

I have cropped some .png images using Gwenview
& the reduced versions are faded with Gwenview, but fully colored with Feh.
I've tried using 'convert' to create .jpg versions,
but while they're much smaller in Kbytes (good),
they're also faded when viewed with Gwenview (Feh ok).

Can anyone explain what has caused this ?
Is there a way of correcting it, eg with Imagemagick ?

It seems to be working correctly now, tho' only time will tell.
I believe I needed to reboot to get the new version set up properly
& instead I initially tried a "setuid root", which used to be required.
Now apparently, it is strickly forbidden (grimace).

Anyway, after a remerge & reboot & no "setuid", it got going as it should.

[gentoo-user] Xscreensaver fails to start

2021-08-31 Thread Philip Webb
I just updated to the latest Xscreensaver-6.01-r1.

If it starts at reboot, individual savers crash
with a screen box saying ' crashed with Status 1'.
If I stop the daemon, then restart it from CLI, I get :

  xscreensaver-systemd: 10:15:26: user bus connection failed: No such file or
directory
  xscreensaver: 10:15:26: pid 15832: xscreensaver-systemd exited unexpectedly
with status 1

I emerged it with USE flag 'elogind' & don't use Systemd.
'which xscreensaver-systemd' finds nothing
nor can I see any helpful messages in a file in /var/log .
I have set the binary's permissions to SUID :

  root:526 /usr/bin> ls -l xscreensaver
  -rws--s--x 1 root root 51880 Aug 31 07:18 xscreensaver

Can anyone offer advice ?

Yes, that worked & I've gone on to emerge the latest Xscreensaver-6.01-r3 ,
which has restored 'xscreensaver-settings' (was '-demo'),
so I can finally suppress a couple of really ugly screensavers !

I did check Bugs for 'motif',

Then you can look at the output at leisure, even on another machine.

[gentoo-user] xscreensaver-demo has vanished

2021-04-25 Thread Philip Webb
I've updated Xscreensaver to 5.45 (from 5.43 IIRC) & 'xscreensaver-demo',
which runs the interactive config screen, has vanished.
'man xscreensaver' says it's available,
but when I enter 'xscreensaver-command -demo', it says "xscreensaver-command:
could not exec xscreensaver-demo: No such file or directory" ;
'equery files xscreensaver | grep bin' confirms this
& it has disappeared from the KDE apps menu.

Xscreensaver is running (started by Xinit), as confirmed by 'htop',
& 'xscreensaver-command -activate' does bring up a screensaver as expected.

Here's the record of the emerge :

  root:550 ~> eix xscreensaver
[I] x11-misc/xscreensaver
Available versions:  5.44-r4 5.45 {caps +gdk-pixbuf gdm +gtk jpeg +locking
new-login offensive opengl pam +perl selinux suid systemd xinerama}
Installed versions: 5.45([2021-04-26 00:02:29])(gtk jpeg opengl -caps
-gdk-pixbuf -gdm -locking -new-login -offensive -pam -perl -selinux -suid
-systemd -xinerama)

Can anyone explain what has happened ?

IIRC it is bound by default : at least, it's always worked before.

Fetchmail is run as a user cron job. It was last emerged in 2020.
The cron jobs are running as before, but nothing is downloaded.
 .muttrc hasn't been changed since 2020.

It does appear that it is in fact more convenient to use Fetchmail directly.
Instead of having to check several folders for new mail,
I can issue the command (aliased as 'fm') when I decide to check mail
& it actually tells me how many it's downloading,
so if there's nothing, I don't have to do anything else.

However, it wb helpful to find out what has gone wrong.
It must be some pkg I updated since 210220.

[gentoo-user] Mutt vs Fetchmail problem

2021-03-22 Thread Philip Webb
I've been a happy user of Mutt for 25 years , helped by Fetchmail.
Today -- in the midst of moving my home, of all times --
I realised that something had gone wrong & I wasn't receiving mail :
e-mails were going out, but nothing was coming back.

I tried the Mutt 'G' command, which replied :
"STLS: Mate, the command must be CAPA USER PASS QUIT ; no encryption".
Of course, that wouldn't do, as it has to send out my password.

I had rebooted on Friday after 28 days , so something must have changed.
In fact, I had updated to 'openssl-1.1.1j' during that time,
so I reverted to 'openssl-1.1.1i', remerged Mutt & rebooted. No change.
Mutt version is 2.0.4-r1 , originally merged in 2020 ;
Fetchmail is 6.4.8 ; '.fetchmailrc' says "sslproto '' options stripcr",
which has been working properly for a long time.

Looking in 'man fetchmail', I found an instruction for testing it,
which suggested all I had to do was try entering 'fetchmail'.
Yes, that downloaded all the stalled msgs !

So Fetchmail itself is working, but when Mutt calls it, something goes wrong.
Can anyone offer a suggestion what that might be ?

[gentoo-user] Gentoo + wifi

2021-03-21 Thread Philip Webb
After many years living in the same apartment, I am going to move soon.
Since before I started using Gentoo in 2003, I have been accessing the I/net
via a landline phone jack, a splitter & (more recently) DHCPCD.
I have never had a cell phone or accessed the I/net via Wifi.

Where I'm moving to, there is free Wifi + free use of broadband ;
there's also a phone jack, tho' it's not in the best location.
I need to decide whether to get Bell Canada (my phone) + my ISP
to transfer my connections to the new place & carry on as always
or to use the offered Wifi services, which would save me CAD 70 / month .

My phone needs are quite basic -- dental appointments + emergencies --
& my ISP has been very reliable, a small Canadian company in Waterloo.

My basic question, if I use the Wifi services,
is whether I would need to add hardware to my machine
& whether I would need to add any packages to my Gentoo system.
I built my computer in 2015 & the mobo came with the usual connectors.

For I/net, I need a DNS address ; for e-mail -- vital -- , an e-ddress.
If I use Wifi, how would these be provided ?

Any advice wb very welcome ; please remember I know nothing re cell phones,
tho' of course I'm quite willing to buy one (brand suggestions ? ).

That line was in [Containments][7],

In fact, I am using the '-r1' versions already.

Something went wrong among the KDE items in ~/.config/ .
I restored that directory from a year-old backup & all is well again.
No doubt, I'll need to do some fine-tuning, but it'll do for now.

[gentoo-user] KDE update causes bizarre behaviour

2021-01-25 Thread Philip Webb
I manhandled a huge update of Qt + KDE last weekend
& am now using  Qt-5.15.2  Frameworks-5.77.0  Plasma-5.20.5 .
It was necessary to unmerge the whole of Qt & remerge it
& ditto part of Frameworks : otherwise there were dependency conflicts.
Portage seems incapable of handling such situations by itself.

The digital clock has disappeared from the panel.
I tried "add widgets" & can drag it to the panel, but it doesn't stay.
I tried another widget (simple calculator) as a test & can't remove it.
The icon for the clock in the "add widgets" menu has a small number attached,
which has now reached "10", suggesting that I've added 10 versions,
but none of them is viewable ; there is an invisible icon in the panel
which when R-clicked shows the display for editing the digital clock,
but when L-clicked shows a different widget.

Gwenview now presents my ~/pix/ directory as "Pictures",
though its name remains the same in my file system.

Has anyone else encountered these or other strange phenomena ?
Does anyone have a suggestion how to get back to normalcy ?

You can't expect Linus to take any time over a minority of users
or for the kernel team generally to reply to someone they don't know.
In order to get attention, you need to come up with a set of patches
which you know work in a modified kernel in your own machine.
For that, you have to put in some work of your own,
searching out the bugs, examining the relevant code,
finding what is needed to fix the bugs & testing patched kernels.

If you try using Screen, you could print yourself a list of commands,
which would make it easier to get used to its features.
It may well be easier to go over to BSD instead.

When I installed this system in 2015, I needed to use raw terminals,
so I wonder whether this is a real problem for a lot of Gentoo users.
If so, an approach by a Gentoo dev to the kernel maintainers
would be likely to get the attention you can't get on your own.

Here in Toronto, I get the same result as Walter via his URL
& similar results from the 2 longer versions above,
except that the escaped version give "ERROR 403: Forbidden".

When I drop Walter's URL into the address bar of Firefox, no problem :
a 1,75 MB PDF which appears to have all the info.

It looks as if the site is refusing 'wget' requests from Ontario,
but allowing them from eg Germany (!).

What Walter is doing is well worthwhile. Press reports are very shallow
& the Ontario government doesn't appear to have any clear idea
just where & how the virus is being spread between humans. HTH.

I didn't read the earlier msgs in this thread,
but I've long used my own Bash function (in .bashrc ) :

  # translate UNIX date to human-readable
  function th { date -d @$1 ; }

eg the last line in emerge.log is "1606047812: *** terminating." ,
so I hilite the number & drop it into the function :

  th 1606047812

which gives the timestamp

For the OP (original poster), I can echo re a weekly 'eix-sync'

Then I make a list of what has been updated among what I use
& update them invidivually or in sensible groups ;
that way, you avoid getting caught in Portage tangles,
which have become less frequent recently, but can still happen.
On a rarely used system, you can update successfully after > 1 year ,
but you need to work thro' the list carefully, which takes time.

As for the original inquiry, most of us never meet each other in person,
but we do swap notes on this list re Gentoo & even other Linux matters.
There's a forum, but the noise/info ratio is much too high :
think of the high-school cafeteria compared with the teachers' commonroom.
It's a friendly place : most of us build our own machines
& are prepared to put in a bit of spare time maintaining our systems.

I agree with almost all of this dialog.
Just like Dale, I stumbled into Gentoo in 2003
after Mandrake was late (again) with a semi-annual update.
I tried a couple of other distros, but they didn't install properly,
so I tried the latest new fad Gentoo, followed the install guide
& suddenly found myself looking at a working system.
I've never wanted to use anything else since.

Gentoo is for people who want to run their own Linux systems,
not something someone else out there decided they ought to want.
It does involve a bit of work + responsibility :
my analogy has always been that M$/Mac are like living in a hotel,
Linux binary distros are like renting an apartment
& Gentoo is like owning your own house.

At first, I assumed Consus -- yet another silly pseudonym --
was a troll of the kind which does turn up here every couple of years,
but his remarks do suggest he's genuinely interested, if ignorant (smile).
Hopefully, he will learn how things get done, stay around & help out.

Gentoo does have a major weakness, which is the state of Portage.
It needs a thoro' rewrite, preferably in a faster language than Python.
I'm too old & it's a long time since I did any programming,
so No I'm not volunteering, but if we're lucky
someone -- M Gorny ? -- will get it started & others will join in.

Meanwhile, thanks yet again to all the devs for their unpaid work.

'eix shadow' provided the solution : there's a new USE flag 'su'.
when that is enabled, 'shadow' is remerged & the system rebooted

BTW no-one else has physical access to this machine,

Thanks to both. I've found the source of the msgs :
Fetchmail was polling  2  mail servers, my ISP + a university a/c ;

Since I no longer expect to get mail via the UoT a/c,

Thanks, you're correct. 'man fetchmail' under 'EXIT CODES' says

  2 An error was encountered when attempting to open a socket
 to retrieve mail. If you don't know what a socket is,
 don't worry about it -- just treat this as an 'unrecoverable error'.
 This error can also be because a protocol fetchmail wants to use
 is not listed in /etc/services.

It looks like that latter, but 'services' has > 1100 lines .
'.fetchmailrc' uses 'sslproto', but otherwise I don't know what it wants.

The simple solution is to have Procmail treat these msgs as spam,
but it wb nice to know just what service it's failing to find.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks again, if I didn't thank you before.
I simply reverted, left it that way & forgot all about it
till I noticed that Fetchmail needs Python-2 only when using 'tk'.
Wanting to eliminate Py-2 ASAP, I emerged Fetchmail 6.4.1
& ran into the same problem. Eventually, I also noticed
that 'sslproto' needs an argument (red face) & added the '' .
Now it's fetching mail again (big smile).

However, my ISP is now sending me an e-mail every 5 min ,
after Fetchmail checks for mail :

  From: "(Cron Daemon)"

  Subject: Cron  test -e /var/run/dhcpcd.pid &&

  fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET)

Can anyone tell me how to suppress these msgs ?

FWIW my own set-up seems to support that.

  872: ~> ls -l /usr/lib64/liblapack.*
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  14 Nov 16 17:11 /usr/lib64/liblapack.so ->
liblapack.so.3
  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  18 Nov 16 17:11 /usr/lib64/liblapack.so.3 ->
liblapack.so.3.8.0
  -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6637008 Nov 16 17:11 /usr/lib64/liblapack.so.3.8.0
  873: ~>

When I checked earlier today, there were broken symlinks to lapack-reference ,
but deleting them made no difference : the pkg isn't installed.
Octave opens & calculates '1+1' without any problems.

So the solution to the OP's problem mb simply to unmerge lapack-reference .

Thanks for this + the other comments.

I'm not interested enough to make any further tests.
I doubt if the problem is hardware, which is  4 yr old  & very reliable ;
the usual rule-of-thumb is 'random = hardware, predictable = software'
& this phenomenon was predictable after the 1st occurence.

Since the previous emerge(s) of this version didn't fail,
the cause has to be some extra demand imposed by the new requirements
eg of the latest PyQt5. This seems quite likely :
Python + Qt both seem to be projects with little discipline or care,
which keep on bloating & demanding more-more from users.
The Python 2/3 fiasco is a big pain in the neck
& whenever Qt needs updating, you have to delete everything first
before re-installing it, otherwise Portage refuses to handle it.

Back in the days when software had to work on an XT,
programmers had to exercise rigorous self-discipline ;
these days of unlimited memory/storage/processing have made them lazy.
On Gentoo, we get all the advantages of controlling our own systems,
but the downside is that we have to attend to some problems
which are handled by the devs on binary distros.

so back to real life ... (grin)

[gentoo-user] qtwebkit problem (solved)

2020-01-05 Thread Philip Webb
In order to update to the latest stable PyQt5-5.13.2 ,
I was required to remerge qtwebkit-5.212.0_pre20190629 ;
this normally takes 30 min & can make its cache in memory.

Towards the end of the latter compile, I suddenly found myself
looking at a completely dark screen : the whole system had crashed.
I pressed the Start button on the box & tried the emerge again,
watching what was going on during the compile,
while monitoring 'free' on another tab & activity on Gkrellm.
Early in the compile, it briefly used most of swap :
I have 8 GB memory + 8 GB swap partition
& it was using c 4,5 GB swap ; this dropped again fairly quickly.
All 8 processors were running at 100 % or nearly
& the CPU temperature was 70 C with fans whining a bit.
Then at the same point in the compile, poof ! -- another hard crash.

Nothing at all in 'syslog' ; 'kern.log' shows :

  Jan 4 13:23:56 localhost kernel: IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): enp2s0: link
becomes ready
  Jan 4 14:09:33 localhost kernel: Kernel logging (proc) stopped.
  Jan 4 14:09:33 localhost kernel: Kernel log daemon terminating.
< this wb the crash, then restart >
  Jan 4 14:09:55 localhost kernel: klogd 1.5.1, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
  Jan 4 14:09:55 localhost kernel: Inspecting /usr/src/linux/System.map
  Jan 4 14:09:55 localhost kernel: Cannot find map file.
  Jan 4 14:09:55 localhost kernel: Loaded 30475 symbols from 1 module.
  Jan 4 14:09:55 localhost kernel: Linux version 4.14.52-gentoo
(root@localhost) (gcc version 7.3.0 (Gentoo 7.3.0-r3 p1.4)) #5 SMP Sun Aug 19
23:59:47 EDT 201

which isn't very helpful. What evidence there was suggested
that it had run out of swap, causing the kernel to panic,
so I added 'dev-qt/qtwebkit notmpfs.conf' to  /etc/portage/package.env ,
tried the emerge again & it went thro' successfully in 29 min .

If you try to emerge LO or FF using a tmpfs , Portage tells you not to.
Rust is the 4th entry in package.env :
I forget whether Portage/other warned me or I found out the hard way.

It's also a puzzle why qtwebkit failed on this re-merge
after compiling successfully when previously updated a few months ago.

It's a very long time since my system (on any box) crashed in this manner.

This is FYI, but others might have a few comments.
