Website localization, information about language packs.
I have checked only some of the available languages, but in all the languages with similar pages to the English ones that I have checked I have seen that the information presented when following the “What is a language pack?” in the downloading initial page is always written in English. I think that, to know if they should download a “full installation” or a “language pack”, this information is more important for people not acquainted with OpenOffice than the information of some other pages. Is it possible to present this information in the native language? In that case, what files must be changed? Kind regards. Jon Peli

I have solved the problem following your instructions. I had updated (in de CMS) the whole "content" directory (Perhaps incorrectly) before examining the file contents; but, still, I did not see anything when trying to edit the "brand.mdtext" files. The problem was that I only saw the content section of the file on my browser and I was not checking the page header section of it. Website localization (Basque)
I am trying to translate some of the main pages of the AOO site, but I do not know: What file must be changed in order to change the information that appears on the heading of most of the pages (“Search” button, “The Free and Open Productivity Suite” and “Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 released” in English) What I should do to, when choosing Basque in the upper right field, in addition of presenting the pages in Basque, get showed the chosen language in this field, and not English. (If this is not changed you may not return to see the English pages if you reselect English in this field) Could any one tell me what to do? Thanks.
RE: Basque pages in the OpenOffice website
Hi Andrea: I am sending you a copy of a message that I sent you on February. I think that I was not able to express correctly what I wanted. Can you still move the files on the /eu-test/ directory to the /eu/ directory? If you can, please move them. I'll try to translate the files still in English later. But I do not remember how to get the files that must be translated, because from the addresses on your message I can get the HTML files but I think that you do not want those files to be translated directly; the files to be translated are others. I apologize for my bad English. I'm trying to see if the translations fit the space (button size, list box, wherever they apply). Thank you. Regards, Pedro. I think that in the top left of that page it will appear something like: This file contains 30 words and 100% is translated. Expand details (I see it in Basque) If you clic over Expand details and afterwards over the word number on the expanded window perhaps you will be able to see the strings that you want to see. I apologize for my bad English.
Former Pootle's aid for translations
In some previous Pootle versions when translating an untranslated text you could see the translations already done for different but similar texts. This feature was extremely helpful in order to assure the consistency of the translation in cases at which the bulk work of the translation had been done by people who no longer works on the project. Nowadays I am not able to use this feature, I do not know if it is because the feature is no longer available or simply because I am doing something wrong. If the answer is the second one, could you tell me what should I do to use that feature? And if the answer is the first one; could it be possible to recover the feature? PS I do not know why when I send a message to the mail list the message apparently is well formatted but when I receive it all the formatting is completely changed.

Basque pages in the OpenOffice website
Some months ago I tried to translate some of the pages in the OpenOffice website into Basque. I had some problems to translate them correctly, and perhaps some of the links on them are not correct; but I think that, if someone corrects these problems with the links, the files on the http://www.openoffice.org/eu-test directory should be copied into the http://www.openoffice.org/eu directory and the request for translation on this directory should be removed. I do not know if I must do something in order to get that.

Any way, I have some problems with the links (the “support” link on the header leads to a page written in Basque but the same link on right menu leads to a file written in English ) on the download “html” file automatically generated . I see this as well. I don't see where this link comes from. Marcus, could you take a look at: http://www.openoffice.org/xx/download/index.html The support link in top nav goes to the localized xx/support/index.html But the link on the right is hard-coded to the default /support/index.html I don't see this URL in the list of customized ones in the message properties Javascript. right, it's hard-coded inside the HTML file. The link text and title text can be customized but not the link itself. Please have a look into the source code of the download webpage [1]. Where is this URL defined? How do we customize it so it points to the same NL version as the topnav version does? I need to add the links as variables to the msg_prop_... file also and re-work the boxed_download.js file to show them. Then you just need to delete the nearly hard-coded part to show the nav bar and insert the function call to create it: createNavigationBar(); On the test page [2] it's nearly done. Only the customized links are missing. Maybe something for the weekend and then I can put it into production. The page that the user sees in their browser is created, at run time, by Javascript. So there are no final file that you can edit. You can only edit the intermediate files, e.g., the HTML template /download/index.html and the Javascript file with the strings, msg_prop_l10n_eu.js. National web sites (Basque)
I think that the present procedure to update the pages of the national web sites is using some auxiliary files (.mdtext, .js …) that are processed to give the final “.html” files to upload into the server. I am not sure of that, but I think too, that presently we can not correct directly those final files. But the files automatically processed in that way sometimes are incorrect for languages with word order in the sentences not equal to the one used in English. For instance, in Basque there is no way to translate the item “ is unavailable for “ because English sentences like “XXX is unavailable for YYY” should be translated to something like “XXX is unavailable YYY-for” This is just an example, but similar things occur frequently. So, if we consider XXX, YYY and ZZZ constant values that must appear in any language, as long as the .html file generating process is not able to consider 3+1 (constant number +1) language dependent strings to combine with them in the following way: lang.dep.str.1 XXX lang.dep.str.2 YYY lang.dep,str3 ZZZ lang.dep.str4 we can not assure that the automatically generated “.html” Is going to be correct for all languages. Actually, even with the (N+1) strings we can not assure the correctness, because the N constants do not necessarily appear in the same order in all the languages. I think that trying to implement an automatic procedure to get final “.html” files for any language nowadays is too complicated and that, because of that, it should be possible to make small changes directly on the final “.html” files. Not directly the translators, of course; but AOO should accept uploading directly the corrected final “.html” files sent by them. Is there, presently, a procedure to make small changes on the final “.html” files without having to change the auxiliary files and regenerate automatically those final “.html” files? What must we do simply to change a bad link in a final “.html” file?

Minor error in the help files in the English version?
When trying to translate into basque some help content I have found the following strings: ki kibi 1024 Mi mebi 1048576 Gi gibi 1073741824 Ti tebi 1099511627776 Pi pebi 1125899906842620 Ei exbi 115292150460685 Zi zebi 118059162071741000 Yi yobi 12089258196146300 I think that, in order to read them more easily, it would be better to insert the thousand separator. But, if it exists, this is not the error. I think that from the fifth item on the values are not correct. Those values are the ones that we get when multiplying directly in CALC the previous value by 1.024, because we cannot get directly in CALC exact numbers with more than 15 digits. Using the exact values, the strings should be: ki kibi 1.024 Mi Mebi 1.048.576 Gi Gibi 1.073.741.824 Ti Tebi 1.099.511.627.776 Pi Pebi 1.125.899.906.842.624 Ei Exbi 1.152.921.504.606.846.976 Zi Zebi 1.180.591.620.717.411.303.424 Yi Yobi 1.208.925.819.614.629.174.706.176 Any way, perhaps those values are used in some functions and, not being possible to work with numbers of more than 15 digits, the values already on the help files are the ones that must appear. I have not got enough time to check how the CONVERT_ADD function works because still there is a lot of things that must be translated.

But, if it exists, this is not the error. I think that from the fifth item on the values are not correct. Interesting. Apparently OpenOffice is smart enough to do the right thing, i.e., =CONVERT_ADD(1/(1024*1024);Eibyte;byte) gives 1099511627776 which is the right result (1 Terabyte). I tried on a 64-bit system, not sure about what happens in a 32-bit one so I won't open an issue right now. But indeed it has all to do with the difference in how numbers are managed internally and how they are displayed. Any way, perhaps those values are used in some functions and, not being possible to work with numbers of more than 15 digits, the values already on the help files are the ones that must appear. Leaving them as they are won't be tragic. But you can insert commas as thousands separators in your translation, this is just text. I am not worried about the accuracy; it is more than enough; and it is similar in other.spreadsheets. But, even if they do not coincide with the results from CALC, in the help perhaps it would be more adecuate to give the correct definition of Pibyte, Eibyte, Zibyte and Yibyte. I translated into basque some sentences of the 3.4.1 release working offline, and I would like to help translating into basque the 4.x releases, but I would like to work online in order to be sure that my work is not in conflict with the work of other possible volunteers. There is a big list of OpenOffice-compatible dictionaries listed here: http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries What we need is for the translators to check this list (or other sources of info) and see if there is an appropriate spell checking dictionary. Also see if there is a hyphenation dictionary and thesaurus. If there are available, try them with the snapshot build to confirm that they still install and work correctly with AOO 3.4.1. If so, create the Bugzilla issue per Juergen's request. How can we get the snapshot build?
RE: Translation into Basque
Andrea, I'm afraid we are not being able to get the translation in time to release the basque version in January. Miguel has told me that he cannot work on the translation in the coming days an I am not able to open neither the .tar.bz2 file that he has sent to me nor the one in the address you told me. I am trying to open them with the Winzip program (working in the Windows 7 OS). If I manage to open those files I´ll try to finish the work this week, but being this my first experience in this task the probability of success is low. Thanks a lot for your help. I apologize for my bad English. How can I contact him to see if he needs help and how we can coordinate work? I'm putting Miguel in CC of this message. It would really be great if you manage to have the translation completed by next week (we have a deadline on January 4th), it's at 97% and you can get it done (and this would mean that we can release OpenOffice 3.4.1 in Basque in January). Anyway, PO files are at http://people.apache.org/~jsc/translation/aoo341_eu_po-files.tar.bz2 and as usual instructions on how to handle them are at http://www.openoffice.org/l10n/how_to_join.html and http://openoffice.apache.org/translate.html or can be requested here.
