Some of the group/community activities would be a quilting bee. A big job
that works well with lots of help - many hands make light work. In the same
way the men would get together to raise a barn.

warmer later in the day so that it will be just the right temperature for
freezing rain.

I agree - I never take a complicated project to my lace group meetings. I take
easy stuff - and even then I can quickly become confused.

I haven’t read the Anne books in several decades, but I recall her jibbing at
her needlework. This would have been plain sewing, which every woman had to do
all the time. Just imagine if every stitch in every piece of clothing you and
your family owned was hand done - by you! Plain sewing is fairly mindless and I
can imagine you would want to have people to talk to while you did it (though
as I recall Anne was left alone … big mistake, Marilla.)

but I have to admit that it's extremely difficult to make anything
complicated with the distraction of company! When I can just sit

[lace] Anne of Green Gables and LACE

2017-03-06 Thread Nathalie
Dear all,

Thank you for the many responses to Anne of Green Gables.
It seems that handicraft was important in the life of the author
because she mentioned it throughout the story.
It is described as knitting, crochet, lace also Point lace???

I have hitherto found only Tatting and Battenberg lace for that period
in Canada.

Although among the many emigrants from England were probably
lacemakers who were active in bobbin and needle lace.

In stories about 19th century Canada, sometimes Devon lace is mentioned.

In Anne of Green Gables, making handicrafts is mainly described as a
social event.
The women and girls come together to make handicrafts in group.
Why were making handicrafts so important or necessary to keep those meetings?
In Victorian times, making handicraft in group was part of their life.

I wonder whether it is still the same nowadays.
Do lacemakers prefer to sit on their own or do they prefer to make
lace in a group?

Anne of Green Gables is not just a tale for children.
Anyone who makes handicrafts may have to think about the social aspect
of lacemaking
when reading the story.

While looking for things for the International Organization of Lace’s
facebook page, I have run across an exhibit, Text and Textiles: The Legacy of
Lucy Maude Montgomery which has just opened at the McLaughlin Library-
University of Guelph. Interestingly there are a number of photos of lace in
the exhibit. This facebook page link will take you to the photographs;

Or alternatively you could look at it on the International Organization of
Lace’s facebook page. There are some pieces of lace, although it pretty much
confirms everything already said on Arachne. There is more information here,
although regrettably no photos.

Re: [lace] Anne of Green Gables

2017-02-18 Thread Devon Thein
Good point, Nancy. There was a lot of Battenberg and Princess Lace then,
also embroidered filet. Of course that is why it would be instructive to
know if the research is directed to what people were wearing, or what
people were doing in terms of handwork.
Considering the characters, I can't see Marilla doing anything more
frivolous than crochet. Wasn't there a chilling scene when she told Anne
she would have to have two dresses exactly the same and when Anne requested
fashionable puffed sleeves this request was cruelly denied?
I can't recall though whether Marilla had strong feelings about decorative
table linens.
The Battenberg and Princess lace I see more as the provence of Diana and
her mother. Wasn't Diana taken out of school in order to learn how to keep
a house? Perhaps the level of housewifery which required that degree of
specialized training included some form of fancy work.

Hi Devon,

Do you include Battenberg and Princess laces in "revival era lace"? because
there was a lot of that being made. I realize that's really a form of
needle lace rather than bobbin lace, but I don't see that the OP specified
bobbin lace, just "lace".

Re: [lace] Anne of Green Gables

2017-02-18 Thread Sue Duckles
Hi All

This is what Margot had to say:

The place to find out about current lacemaking in Canada is:
https://lacegazette.com

Lacemaking in Maritime Canada started in the 1600s, when that part of Canada
was a French colony. We know for sure that the nuns taught Torchon lace at
Fortress Louisbourg, on Cape Breton Island. (Geography lesson: The Maritimes
are the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island in
Eastern Canada. Cape Breton Island is part of NS and “next door” to PEI.)
Not much is known about lacemaking after those 3 provinces became British
colonies in the 1700s. However, after visiting many museums, small and large,
in The Maritimes, I can say that I’ve seen lots of tatting and crocheted lace,
but no bobbin lace. Lace on clothing from the late 1800s and early 1900s that
I’ve seen displayed has, without exception, been machine made lace. And
because this was, and is, the poor part of Canada, the machine lace has
usually been of poor quality.

There is a small group of lacemakers in PEI who might have some information.
They can be reached through the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette.

Hope it helps.

Or 'they' bought it by mail-order, e.g. the T. Eaton catalogue. If

Hello Nathalie and everyone

It has been a while since I've read Anne of Green Gables. I don't associate
lacemaking with that story.
Does the author mention lace?
