Barry It is very hard to tell with so little information, and that is probably because of the immediate crash which wipes out your debugging info by crashing X and any xterm you are running from. However IMHO it's likely to be a problem with the X driver. mplayer and most other video players prefer to output via xv which enables some direct interaction with hardware. It is a lot faster than using x11, to the point where many movies will not play smoothly in x11. However it is worth trying: mplayer -vo x11 moviefile.avi to see if it crashes, then the same using -vo xv to see if there is a difference. I see you are ion a notebook with presumably shared RAM between your video system and your OS. Allocate as much ram as possible to video in the bios. By the way if you are having immediate crashes and cannot read the mplayer output, try either starting mplayer from a console, where an X crash won't affect you, or redirect mplayer's output to a file so it survives the X crash. To start from a console, first of all in a terminal within X run xhost + (this is a security risk but unless you have intruders on your lan worry not) then in a console run export DISPLAY=:0 mplayer -vo xv moviefile.avi the movie should play (or crash) in your X screen, but the console will report back all the error messages. The other obvious test is to run another distro from a livecd and see if it will play a movie on your system. You'll probably need to pick a live cd that has access to a good range of codecs (probably chris' sabayon would work well, or pclinuxos perhaps), or pick a movie that has open codecs. cups lp0 problem
I have a old printer which gets used once per month and is unplugged and stored most of the time. When I plug it in cups recognises it but produces 'permission denied' messages even though I have added myself to the lp and lpadmin groups. Stopping and restarting the cups daemon does not work To get output I have to alter the permissions on /dev/lp0 from 660 to 666. This to me is a dirty way of fixing the problem. Is there another way, or is it a cups fault? (cups 1.3.10). There is no problem with my usb printer. The problem reoccurs after rebooting. TIA Barry

python coding problem
Hi python experts After lots of suggestions I have as last tried programming in python. Skype video problem solved!!!!!
A tip here for those, like me , frustrated users of skype If your camera does not produce an image check 'xvattr -a XV_AUTOPAINT_COLORKEY' in a xterm. Options are 0 or 1. If the result is 0 rerun the cmd with -v 1 on the end to reset it. Some dirty apps, mplayer is 1 of them reset the attribute to '0'. It is an instant fix if you are looking at a black rectangle in the options-video menu! of course this could be easily fixed in skype - if it was open source Barry

I can shut down every running app without freeing the port, when this happens the only option left is to reboot, even restarting X fails to cure the problem. Hi, I use firestarter without any problems. It runs as a service which has a gui frontend which may or may not be displayed. I have dhcp-client dhcp-common pkgs installed only. The service runs continuously unless you stop it using the gui. If you are swapping the 1 ethernet port between laptop and internet this could be causing your problem I have 2 boxes the main one on 10.0.0.1 and the lappie on 10.0.0.2 and I connect them with a xover cable as required. The main box is connected permanently to the internet using a usb connection, (saves much swapping of cables) the lappie only connects to the main box as required. firestarter setup files are in /etc/firestarter. I do not appear to have a file /etc/network/interfaces I suggest you start the firestarter gui again, and run the wizard. Uncheck the box 'ip address is assigned via DHCP' check 'start firewall now' then save and quit. With the lappie connected ifconfig shows me 3 connections - eth0, eth1, and lo so I need to run ifup and ifdown to select the connection i want HTH Barry --- Steve Holdoway wrote: On Fri, 22 Aug 2008 19:16:25 +1200 Aidan Gauland [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, I've got a really weird problem with my laptop. What I've been doing that has worked up until now is connect my laptop and desktop via a loopback ethernet cable, and giving each a static IP address using the network manager GUI (I'm using GNOME), and we're off. When I try to do that now, the laptop's IP address changes to 169.254.93.80 within a few seconds of connecting (I can see this only with ifconfig, but not the GUI). Looking at the system log, I see a bunch of messages about DHCPDISCOVER and eventually a message from NetworkManager saying No DHCP reply received. Automatically obtaining IP via Zeroconf. And goes on to say that it's using IP address 169.254.93.80 I don't have the zeroconf package installed, and I can use the laptop on my school's LAN with no problems. The only recent change I have made to my system is installing Firestarter, but I turned all that off to try and solve this problem. Thanks, Aidan Looks like there's a dhcp client running on this box, and it's failing to find a dhcp server. Modify /etc/network/interfaces... Re: Mandriva questions
Hi I have been running Mandriva since before mandrake 8. 1st question ... what is the app, is the src in a .mdk package? If so, install the pkg as per normal, it will go into /usr/src/whatever. If it is a tar or similar pkg unpack it to /usr/src/... Konqueror is excellent for this. Open 2 panels, unpack in 1 panel, goto usr/src in the 2nd panel, then drag n drop the appropriate dir across. From there it is a normal compile but test before you install. You will need the src package for your kernel installed before you compile. If the compile bombs there may be other pkgs you need to install also. HTH Barry --- Tom Munro Glass wrote: Do we have any Mandriva experts on the list? My own setup is freeview via DVB-S (satellite) which is probably the best way to get a reasonable amount of digital TV in NZ at present. However to demo that I will need a satellite to connect to. So ... We can either 1. set up a temporary satellite dish if anyone has one lying about; or 2. find a venue with a sky dish that we can plug into for the night; or 3. Just demo the software without any live TV. If anyone has any brilliant ideas, or something they particularly want to see, let me know. I will also need a projector and screen, dunno what the drill is with this these days, but I understand it has presented a problem recently. I can supply a DVB-T(digital video broadcast - terrestial) decoder if required. This set would work best through a standard UHF TV aerial which I do not have on hand. I can also supply a satellite finder if required. If someone can supply the dish I can set it up for you. A SKY dish is OK but would require a LNB(low noise balun) of recent vintage. A LNB is the thing on the end of the arm where the dish focuses. A dish does not have to be mounted on a roof. Any position with a good view of the northern horizon is OK. I have had a temporary dish set up on my lawn. Cheers Ross Drummond

Basically, you convert the correct size jpg to pnm, then feed it into ppmtoy4m, then mpeg2enc to encode it to the correct format, then use mplex to multiplex sound (or silence) and you have a dvd ready mpeg file. It is the same process for the background of a dvd menu. See http://www.tappin.me.uk/Linux/dvd.html#menus for details. Set the -n parameter to ppmtoy4m to the number of frames you need (ie, number of seconds times 25 (frames per second)). Use mencoder on the result if you need something other than mpeg2. Hope this helps Later Lee Alternatively use something like what Barry was doing, except you need to have a series of files, one for each frame. Something like take the first frame and rename it frame001.jpg Say you want 5 second view, you need 25x5=125 frames (assuming PAL frame rate). Now make 124 soft link files all pointing to frame001.jpg and consecutively numbered so you end up with: frame001.jpg frame002.jpg ... frame125.jpg That step is tedious to do by hand but of course you can script it. You now have 125 frames to feed to mencoder. Alternatively use a simple editor like avidemux to add in the 125 frames. You can also use a more sophisticated editor like kino or cinelerra to add the jpg once, and specify the number of seconds it should be inserted for. If you are wanting to add to an existing video you will first need to resize the frames to the same dimensions as the frame size in the existing video. This may involve cropping/resizing.
