Whoever is in charge of the Kali distro is on the ball. I got a 2.3.7 update
the day after it went live. Since that’s a Debian-based system, I should think
you‘d be able to install the package on Ubuntu. (?)

Is there a problem with the LyX server?

Since Thursday evening (3/1/19) I've been unable to access the updated

Firefox will emit that diagnostic when one is attempting to access an IP

(The diagnostic may thus be grossly misleading.)

That doesn't mean that your problem is necessarily caused in this

I've never previously had a problem connecting to the LyX FTP site with

Hi Patrick,

You seem to abandon many of the email threads that you start.

Perhaps for some of them, you solve the problem and you do not think
it's worth a message to say thank you to someone who spent their time to
help you (or perhaps you do it in a private email?), but for many of the
emails you are explicitly asked questions and I do not see any response
to them. For example, in this current thread I know you solved the
direct problem but I'm curious what you would think is the ideal
behavior because perhaps there is a way to improve LyX. Specifically,
why wouldn't LyX use the default viewer? What behavior would you
recommend?

Here are some other threads where you are asked questions that you seem
to just ignore:

I'm writing this email to see if either you are not receiving some of
the emails (in which case we should figure out why) or if something is
wrong on my end and I am not seeing your responses. If you are receiving
them and just choose not to reply because you think it is not worth your
time, I will accept your choice. I'm not looking to start an argument, I
just want to make sure I understand what the situation is.

Or perhaps there is something that we on the list should be better
about. For example, would you prefer to be CC'ed whenever responded to?

Just to be sure:

* uptating does not work, if you save the file under a new name

Acroread, it may be the reason, on another machine, I used probably evince.
But this is strange:

Hey Guys,
Hope everybody is doing well. I am using lyx for my master
dissertation. I received a template from the university with different
aspects divided into .tex files. Meaning there is a .tex file for
introduction, a .tex file for chapters, a .tex file abstract and so on.
I import the .tex file into lyx make changes but when I try to compile
it I get a large number of errors. I tried using texmaker but again
when I compile same errors. I looked around and found there is also a
build.bat file given. So if I make changes in the .tex file, save and
then run the build.bat file a final pdf document is produced which
shows my changes.
So basically I need to make changes to the .tex file and run the
build.bat file and it all works fine. I would like to continue working
with lyx as I am much more comfortable with the gui compared to
texmaker. The problem is lyx creates a .lyx file and the changes are
made there and not in the .tex file.
Is it possible to reflect the changes in the .tex file without
compiling the .lyx file? Thank you for your time.

Best Regards,
Mueez Aizaz.

Hi Mueez,
you may try to adapt to the concept of having child documents in a LyX
master document.
You could then make a single LyX document of every tex file (using
import) and in a second step to include all the single LyX documents as
child documents in a Lyx Master document.

Study the manuals on this concept.

Is it? I do not see a regression. Both 2.1 and 2.2 put the heading on

Hi Hatim,

Opening your file with LyX 2.1.x the chapter title is correctly RTL.

In you example file you use a lot of code in the document preamble. You
don't need all of it. For example

\usepackage{fancyhdr}
\pagestyle{fancy}

will automatically be added by LyX when you use the page style fancy
in the document settings.

For custom header/footer lines LyX provides the module custom
header/footer lines.

So you could add things like
\lhead{\resizebox{1in}{!}{\includegraphics{main_logo.ps}}}
directly in the main text.

LyX also supports hyperref copletely. So things like
\usepackage{hyperref}%لتلوين الاشارات المرجعية وجعل الفهارس قابلة للنقر
\hypersetup{
colorlinks=true,
linkcolor=blue,
citecolor=black,
filecolor=black,
urlcolor=black,
}
can be omitted in the preamble since you can set this in the document
settings under PDF properties.

Attached is your example file (in the format of LyX 2.2dev) where i
removed some preamble code as I described.

In general please use the simplest possible version for a test file
(remove also all unnecessary preamble code.

Thanks, Liviu, The update is offered by muon, the update manager of Kubuntu.
Since it is not yet officially released, I want to keep the 2.1 and call 2.2 by

It's not very clear what you're trying to do. 2.2 is current

Do you know a solution to this (could not see one in any of the threads I
read), or should I simply be using another previewer?

If you really need dvi output, you are pretty much stuck, unless you
are willing to try TeXLive and its dvi previewer. Otherwise, I suggest
using SumatraPDF and previewing the documents as pdf.

OK thanks for the infos Enrico I really appreciate it!
I wish there was a DVI viewer which allowed the refresh in lyx (so it keeps
the current location in the document. Well at least I know not to look further.

Turns out I was missing this bit in Skim which one would have supposed to have
been enabled by default.

that is an option to Automatically update files for external updates.

Sounds like the configuration may be
hosed.  Have you tried reconfiguring LyX?

Hosed? I love those technical terms.
I thought of that not long after my last post. No luck

If that doesn't work, you might try deleting the local LyX
 subdirectory
 (probably C:\Documents and Settings\you\Application
 Data\lyx16, but your
mileage may vary), backing up any modified layouts etc. you
 might have there,
 then reconfigure LyX.

Sounds interesting: I'll give it a try.

No luck. I seem to be getting the same behaviour.

Then reinstall LyX. Its the quickest solution and works in most cases:

0. uninstall LyX 1.6.7 _completely_
1. uninstall also older versions of LyX (if installed)
2. if you are using MiKTeX 2.7 or older, reinstall it too and also
_completely_

3. check the registry that there are no leftovers from LyX
4. log off then log on again
5. reinstall LyX using the alternative Windows installer:

In case you uninstalled MiKTeX, use the complete variant, otherwise the
small variant.

Any suggestions on a good OpenSource registry cleaner?

I did a cleanup of the registry with CCleaner, after removing LyX. What I may
not have done is kill off the user profile file at the same time. I know I
deleted it on Paul Rubin's advice but I'm not sure that I went back and did it
again before a re-install (using the normal installer not the LyxInstaller)
Also I am not sure if I shutdown at that point or not. I know I had rebooted a
couple of times but I am not clear at what exact point.

I'll get rid of MixTex too and try LyXWinInstaller after killing off the user
profile.

Thanks

Sounds like the configuration may be
hosed.  Have you tried reconfiguring LyX?

Hosed? I love those technical terms.
I thought of that not long after my last post. No luck

If that doesn't work, you might try deleting the local LyX
 subdirectory
 (probably C:\Documents and Settings\you\Application
 Data\lyx16, but your
mileage may vary), backing up any modified layouts etc. you
 might have there,
 then reconfigure LyX.

Sounds interesting: I'll give it a try.

No luck. I seem to be getting the same behaviour.

Then reinstall LyX. Its the quickest solution and works in most cases:

0. uninstall LyX 1.6.7 _completely_
1. uninstall also older versions of LyX (if installed)
2. if you are using MiKTeX 2.7 or older, reinstall it too and also
_completely_

3. check the registry that there are no leftovers from LyX
4. log off then log on again
5. reinstall LyX using the alternative Windows installer:
http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinInstaller

I'll get rid of MixTex too and try LyXWinInstaller after killing off the user
profile.

Thanks

I guess it has to be with how Mac builds images on screen. Being this

I guess it has to be with how Mac builds images on screen. Being this
truth, doesn't make it sense to remove the update button from the Mac
version?

I've no idea about how tough this action would be!

Thanks for your help!

Can someone show me how I can update text using Lyx or Tex code?
Basically, what I want is similar to the Bookmark + cross reference
features in MS Word. For example, I create a bookmark with text “update
me”. Then I create a cross reference somewhere else in the document. The
cross reference also shows “update me”. When I change the bookmark text
to “you are updated” and select to update the whole document, the cross
referenced text now shows “you are updated”.

Sure, this is one of the key features of LyX/LaTeX.
I'm wondering that you are not getting automatically updated
cross-references.

Sorry for this question but have you read the LyX Tutorial? It explains
LyX's basic features like cross-references.

If you already have read the Tutorial and it doesn't work, please report
back and I'll help you to get it working.

Just put a label: InsertLabel, with whatever text you want. Then put a
cross reference to the label where you want. Change the label and the
cross-ref will change, too, automatically, though of course all the
labels have to have different names.

If you don't want the label to show in output, just put it in a note
(InsertNoteLyX Note). You can put the label in a note, too, if you
really don't want it to be output.

Not sure if I have missed out something fundamental. I have tried this
but when inserting the cross-reference, all I can get is reference or
page. I want a reference that does not output the reference/page where
the label is, but the actual text of the label text.

But this is then no cross-reference. If I understood you right, you want
to have a macro that outputs certain text on demand. I possible solution
for this is in the attached LyX file.
