The best resources for learning are looking at, and tweaking, code written by others. Take a look at the code in the Samples directory, and the KGM utilities (downloadable from the MapInfo-L file archives at http://www.directionsmag.com/mapinfo-l/), as well as many other mapbasic sources there.

I've had this happen, and recently have seen a few posts to the list with the same problem. There is a registry setting that can be tweaked to alleviate this condition somewhat. By default, Mapinfo sets MaxFiles to 60. You can pump it up to 100 here:
