Re: [libreoffice-marketing] WordPad being removed from future Windows releases
Thanks for posting this, Mike. I do think a blog post would be worthwhile, perhaps developing a theme of Microsoft abandoning the self-sovereign desktop as we go - a theme I suspect several developments would fit into. One small thought on the Mastodon posts. With no god-like Algorithm to expose posts to new readers, we need to use hashtags in every post to make sure things get read. Perhaps add in #FOSS #FLOSS #OpenSource #SoftwareFreedom #Office for this one? I am responding to the proposal to segment for business use (by saying much business use is in fact indistinguishable from personal use), not advocating it. We should not be using any terminology that would discourage a new user of the software. That's also why I very much dislike the term "Community Edition" as it is closely associated with the monetisation of software by an "open core" approach, something TDF has no time for. The problem with both the "Community Edition" tag and the whole approach becomes much clearer with this illustration though. There is absolutely no reason I and the two people I work with in my business should not use this version, but the wording comes across as quite hostile to us. We are not (in this role) technology enthusiasts, early adopters or power users, but neither do we fit in the old-fashioned view of a "business user" arising from the old days when people worked in offices and had an IT department. We just want it to deal with the dinosaurs who don't operate purely online like we do! We are never going to pay for a support contract, and as far as I know there is no-one offering case-based paid support anyway. If we loved the product we would probably want to make "gratitude" payments to developers occasionally. The description that would apply to our use is "Unsupported official edition", making clear there is absolutely no problem for us to use this download and that we can't expect any help beyond Googling it if we have problems. Re: [libreoffice-marketing] The Edition Matter
It certainly (correctly) indicates there are unofficial editions in circulation. I see that as a helpful differentiator. I would not jump to the conclusion they are untrustworthy; however, the use of a validated "Libreoffice technology" signifier as Italo has proposed would fix that if it were a problem for other editions to confirm they too are approved by TDF. The term "Community Edition" is very commonly used to differentiate feature-limited versions so if I had to choose, I would rather our version was considered strong because we use an "Official Edition" tag rather than the software produced by others being considered stronger because we use a "Community Edition" tag. [libreoffice-marketing] Speaking ot OggCamp
I just agreed to give a main-track talk at OggCamp <https://oggcamp.org> in Manchester, England on October 19 about TDF's two sustainability initiatives. *Title*: Making Free Productivity Software Sustainable *Abstract*: Productivity software like LibreOffice has long been sustained by the commercial activities of community members as well as the contributions of countless volunteers. That's also driven standards engagement, like the work around Open Document Format (ODF). But the cloud is slowly strangling the desktop support business, and spare-time volunteers may not be enough for complex, mature software. The Document Foundation has been innovating to sustain LibreOffice and ODF; this talk will describe the COSM <https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2019/07/02/the-cosm-project/> and TDC projects, and ask whether similar approaches might sustain other open source desktop software. If anyone from TDF (apart from me...) is going, I expect to organise sessions both at CLS and at OSCON on How to start an open source foundation. I did this last year and it was well received. Again the event takes place the two days before OSCON. More information is available on our website at http://communityleadershipsummit.com/ You may notice that the event is happening on a Friday and Saturday this year instead of on a Saturday and Sunday. This is because this year OSCON starts a day earlier on the Sunday, so we are now starting a day earlier on the Friday. As usual the Community Leadership Summit is entirely free to attend (although free registration is required), and open and welcome to everyone. The website at http://communityleadershipsummit.com/ has been updated and I would encourage you to go and register (http://www.communityleadershipsummit.com/register/). If you could please share the event on your social networks, that would be wonderful. We usually use the hashtag #cls. Every year we work to evolve and refine the event, and this year is no exception. We have a diverse audience, and we are making some refinements to make navigating the schedule easier and making the sessions more relevant to attendees. We are also exploring other non-unconference content. What will make the event better than ever is your feedback! I have kicked off a discussion on our new Community Leadership Summit forum at http://communityleadershipsummit.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5t=24p=73#p73 - we would welcome and encourage your feedback. Re: [libreoffice-marketing] UK Government establishes royalty free open standards
It was a huge effort involving many people and organisations, including OFE, FSFE, OSC and indeed OSI. The outcome would not have been this good without all of them. What was encouraging was that a community spontaneously formed to work on this without the need for an arch-organiser - or, indeed, a corporate paymaster. S. Although of course when you see local events around your area that need copies of manuals or bundles of leaflets, joining in would be great! Wrt. the collaboration - what concretely do you need done ? Three main areas: * Preparing materials We already have the great manuals plus some leaflet banner designs, but each design needs some love to make it work at a specific event. I've tried, and I really am not skilled enough to work on them. I'd love to have one or more collaborators who can maintain store-ready artwork that we can upload and order. I'd also love someone to design us a table cloth that could be used at table-top events. It would need out name and graphics along the edges in particular, so they show when the cloth is draped over a table. No idea how to get it manufactured, but I know where to ask if there's someone with the graphic skills. * Linking with an event When there's a local event that would benefit from leaflets, manuals, t-shirts etc * Sharing administration I'm notoriously distractable, so having a collaborator here would be great too. But I'd not want us to miss out on being able to help local events like the one Danishka told us about but we weren't able to help with, hence my offer here to organise something ad-hoc using what we have now and Jean's willingness to find funding. [libreoffice-marketing] Collateral Scheme
Summary: I propose a scheme for LibreOffice supporters to get materials to use at events. I ask for collaborators and I request an OK for the Board. == Explanation == You may recall that Jean Hollis Weber made a great offer to LibreOffice from the Friends of OpenDocument group a few weeks ago (March 11th). She said they hold a comfortable sum of money on behalf of LibreOffice and went on to say: Instead of giving the LO money to The Document Foundation for general expenses, we think it is better to make it available to cover expenses that The Document Foundation can't or won't deal with. Some examples might be the cost of marketing materials (including copies of the user guides) for tables at events, attendance at events aimed at potential and actual customers (librarians, educators, etc), or just about anything that would be valuable for spreading awareness and growing the community and the customer base. I contacted Jean offline and asked more about this. We talked through the proposal I'm going to make now, and in order to make it feasible I applied to and have been granted membership of Friends of OpenDocument Inc. === Proposal === It would be great if LibreOffice advocates around the world were able to get hold of posters, leaflets, maybe even t-shirts and table displays, in support of LibreOffice at user groups, conferences and the like. One way to do this would be to create items on an online store such as Lulu, CafePress or SpreadShirt (or equivalents accessible to other geographies) run on behalf of both TDF and Friends of OpenDocument. We at the Friends could then purchase items at cost and have them shipped to the event organiser. I am willing to set up and administer such a store and work with the Friends to authorise and make purchases, but I have no graphic skills whatsoever so would need others to help create items, upload and maintain them. It's not my proposal at this stage to create a TDF Store for public purchases, but it's obviously a possible future development. == Call for Action == * Who would be willing to collaborate with me on this? * Is there an upcoming event we can set as a goal so we have a target (lat May-early June)? * Board: Will you give this scheme your agreement please? We can then in future select the next location one year in advance and ensure the current team are able to involve the next team in preparations as a learning exercise. so, you would like to issue the Call for Locations now, i.e. before the Paris conference takes place? Yes, but with a goal of making a decision at the end of the year, not in time for Paris. What do others think? From how I understood previous messages, people prefer to wait until after the Paris conference. I understood your proposal was to actually announce the new location in Paris. I think that's impractical. But I do think it's possible to start the call-for-location process now, promote it in Paris, and announce the new location in January. Re: [libreoffice-marketing] website terminology for free software
On 4 Aug 2011, at 20:57, Florian Effenberger wrote: Hello, I've received a request to change two things on our website, regarding terminology: - Instead of solely using open source, I was asked that we should also use free software. TL;DR summary: FOSS is a reasonable term to use sparingly in English (FOSS - Free, Open Source Software). Explanation: FLOSS is not a good term to use as it appears humourous to most people not educated to regard it otherwise. Over-use of Free distracts most native English speakers who rarely associate it with Liberty unless educated to do so and I don't think that's TDF's role. FOSS - Free, Open Source Software - works in many contexts as it does not have other common meanings and provokes curiosity, but should not be over-used as jargon and acronyms make text look complex. Open Source is a term widely recognised among computer users and is thus a good colloquial term in contexts where the message is about LibreOffice rather than about software freedom as a philosophy or ethical system. So my recommendation would be to occasionally use the construct Free, Open Source software (say once per page) and otherwise stick with open source. - Linux should be referred to as GNU/Linux. For most people it really doesn't matter, and it makes some people happy, so why not. I am, as we have a saying in Germany, rather emotionless on this, but I do see that many people have concerns with solely using open source or leaving out the GNU prefix. Shall we aim for achieving a good mixture of both terminologies? Anyone has severe concerns on that? I think that what would be really helpful would be if someone were to review the various app stores rules and terms, and identify the ones we can readily work with and the other ones where we would have a major legal problem. Would you like to drive this? [...] I support that proposal, Charles ! When we discussed this last year, I researched a bit and found the following article from the FSF: http://www.fsf.org/news/2010-05-app-store-compliance The article's summary: An iPhone port of GNU Go is currently being distributed through Apple's App Store. However, this distribution is not in compliance with the GNU GPL. The primary problem is that Apple imposes numerous legal restrictions on use and distribution of GNU Go through the iTunes Store Terms of Service, which is forbidden by section 6 of GPLv2. So today we have written to Apple and asked them to come into compliance. We would be happy to see Apple distribute these programs under the GPL's terms, but unfortunately, it seems much more likely that they'll simply make the problem go away by removing GNU Go from the App Store. I think the above refers to the iOS App Store, but I do not know if the relevant terms are any different for the Mac App Store. (I think it predates the existence of the Mac App Store.) The other difference is that the article refers to the GPL and not specifically the LGPL license. I will follow up further and let you know what I discover. Personally I think that conclusion is debatable. While Apple was the channel, the actual distribution was done by whoever put the software into the channel and it's not obvious to me that the situation is any different to, say, buying a PC with Linux on it from a members only retailer like CostCo. As long as the offer of source was made, I suspect an equally valid case could be constructed that there's no coming into compliance to be done. Not that I am a lawyer, of course :-) Just saying that I suspect the action in that link was motivated more by politics than by legal certainty... Perhaps the named person could be a Team Leader delegating some of the work to other agreed people. In co-operatives that i have worked in the SC would need to be voted-in first. Then the SC would delegate areas of responsibility to various groups such as Marketing and decide how people would be elected or appointed within those groups. Ideally (imo) the groups would be allowed to choose a suitable way for themselves (within reason). Initially groups would communicate with SC about what area they need to be in control of and which they only need to communicate with. For example they might decide that the Design sub-group is better under a different group's control but is a sub-group they might want to have a few members in so that communications are smoother. There are a lot of issues here that might change until TDF settle on something that works more smoothly. If I had to invent something, it would be along the lines of a Communications Working Group that was open to membership from anyone who would agree to its rules (confidentiality until release, have media training, communicate only the group consensus as TDF's position, for example). I would then use the mail alias of that Working Group as the press contact on any releases, and have the most qualified member pick up each inbound request.
