A staggering 270 million bombs were dropped on Laos, during what became
known as the secret war, because Americans were unaware of what was going
on. The 80 million bombs that never went off remain live, buried all over
the country.

There were more than 580,000 bombing missions on Laos between 1964 and
1973. That’s one every eight minutes, every day, for nine years.

I got a chuckle out of this from the article linked above:

Therefore, Trump has retrieved his road map from the attic. The
presence of Henry Kissinger in the Oval Office for an unscheduled
meeting with Trump just before Lavrov walked in – accompanied by the
famous “Russian spy” Ambassador Sergey Kislayk – has been a deliberate
‘curtain raiser’. Kissinger has longstanding personal equations with
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, and of course the grey cardinal of US
diplomacy had engineered the era of détente with the Soviet Union.

---

So fascinating how people like Carl, Paul Craig Roberts, Michael Hudson,
Mike Whitney, Diana Johnstone and Boris Kagarlitsky can get so enthused
over Trump and Putin becoming our age's Nixon and Mao. Kissinger was key
to the first rapprochement and seems to be key to the new one.

Under ordinary circumstances, people on the left understand that where
Kissinger goes, Satan follows close behind. But when you decide to
automatically put a plus where Nicholas Kristof puts a minus, the
results stagger the imagination.

The protests and ‘#resistance’ to Trump are largely inspired by the political
establishment (Democrats-neocons-Pentagon-spooks etc.) who think their
right-to-rule was illegitimately denied by Trump’s election.

They will be even more enraged if the essential policies of their
pro-war/pro-Wall Street politics - hostility to Russia and China - are reversed
by the Trump administration.

There were indications this week (in addition to to the firing of Comey) that
that was happening, viz.,

Few events in Syria have attracted as much attention as the alleged
chemical weapon attack on the town of Khan Shaykhun
.
The callous use of biological agents to target civilians is a “crime
against humanity ”
and a serious
violation of international law
,
according to human rights experts.

Far less attention has been given to the Syrian government’s targeting of
health-care facilities in rebel territory. This ruthless strategy, which
also constitutes a crime against in humanity, has made it impossible for
humanitarian organisations to provide care for injured soldiers and
civilians in some cases.

The Syrian American Medical Society

reports that at least 168 attacks on medical facilities were carried out
in the second half of 2016. These injured at least 80 medical staff and
killed 26. This adds to an estimated death toll of over 800 medical
personnel since the conflict began.

In 1950, Smith’s so-called Christian Nationalist Party held their annual
three-day conference in downtown Los Angeles at the old Trinity
Auditorium (which still stands today). Using a pseudonym, international
fugitive Francis Parker Yockey was one of the featured speakers at the
conference.

From the podium, Yockey delivered what he would later describe as “a
tremendous speech” to the 3,000-plus attendees. The substance of his
oration was that the Nuremberg Trials in Germany were a “sham,” that
thousands of “white Christian Germans” had been convicted “without
trial,” that “Jews control the world today,” and that “we will have a
Nuremberg trial in this country someday.” The speech and the convention
itself went unreported, save for a paid display ad in the Times.
Generally, the Los Angeles press had long decided to “quarantine” the
fire-breathing bigot Smith and his comrades from any news coverage.

(Leo Frumkin was a long-time member of the SWP who was expelled along
others in the early 80s for defending Trotskyism.)

While commentators denounce and rebut Donald Trump’s proposal to ban all
Muslims from entering the United States, some will remember that 70
years ago, another battle against bigotry, as well as anti-Semitism and
what the media called “fascism,” was waged by Jewish and Black teenagers
on the streets of Los Angeles.

In November 1945, when anti-Semitic agitator Gerald L.K. Smith, a man
the B’nai B’rith Messenger referred to as the “Little Fuehrer,” was
given a permit by the Los Angeles School Board to speak at Los Angeles
Polytechnic High School, a group of Jewish teenagers — many from
Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights — was among the organizers of a
school walkout to protest the actions of the school board.

“We were just radical kids,” Leo Frumkin, one of the leaders of the
student walkout, recalled in a recent interview. We were “just fresh
coming out of the second world war, with the atrocities that we heard
about. There was a guy who was a fascist, and that’s what we were
objecting to,” said Frumkin, who was 17 in 1945 and a senior at
Roosevelt High.

When I was a young journalist, I went back to my country of birth to
work in my native language. In the early 1990s, Russian journalists were
engaged in the project of reinventing journalism—which itself had been
used to perform the opposite of conveying reliable information. Language
was a problem. The language of politics had been pillaged, as had the
language of values and even the language of feelings: after decades of
performing revolutionary passion, people had become weary of the very
idea of passion. So the new Russian journalists opted for language that
was descriptive in the most direct way: we tried to stick to verbs and
nouns, and only to things that could be directly observed. It was the
journalistic equivalent of the hardware store: if the shape of a word
could not be clearly described and its weight could not be measured, it
could not be used. This kind of language is good for describing things
that are in front of your eyes and terrible for conveying the contents
of your mind or heart. It was constraining.

Writing in Russian was a challenging exercise akin to navigating a mine
field: one misstep could discredit the entire enterprise. Compared to
this, writing in English was freedom. But then things in Russia got
worse. A new government came in, and did new damage to the language.
Vladimir Putin declared a “dictatorship of the law.” His main ideologue
advanced the idea of “managed democracy.” Temporary president Dmitry
Medvedev said, “Freedom is better than unfreedom.” Now words did not
mean their opposite anymore. They just meant nothing. The phrase
“dictatorship of the law” is so incoherent as to render both
“dictatorship” and “law” meaningless.

Donald Trump has an instinct for doing both of these kinds of violence
to language. He is particularly adept at taking words and phrases that
deal with power relationships and turning them into their opposite. This
was, for example, how he used the phrase “safe space” when talking about
vice-president-elect Mike Pence’s visit to the musical Hamilton. Pence,
if you recall, was booed and then passionately—and
respectfully—addressed by the cast of the show. Trump was tweeting that
this should not have happened. Now, the phrase “safe space” was coined
to describe a place where people who usually feel unsafe and powerless
would feel exceptionally safe. Claiming that the second most powerful
man in the world should be granted a “safe space” in public turns the
concept precisely on its head.

Poem for Jacques Maritain and Leon Trotzky
by Delmore Schwartz (an unpublished 1934 poem)

The Gentile night and the white stars in congress
Still the traffic's racked energy;
And the hurdy, gurdy newsreel of memory
Flashes the past in its stilted sadness,
Standing on what brink then? By my room's window,
Thinking of the sources of situation
-Of the people's confrontation
When they see themselves dirty in another's shadow!
o Marxist drunk at the teats of Tiresias,
Is night still close to morning? Will the morning
Once more from rumorous darkness release us?
Tonight is more than night and more than meaning.
Stars are the buds of morning, do you know?
Look, in the West, at the white moon dreaming of snow.

"The FBI is apparently hot on the redolent trails of lucre left by Michael
Flynn

 and Paul Manafort
,
which confirms my suspicion that the real scandal isn’t Russian meddling in
the 2016 elections but shady financial dealings by Trump’s dubious

From the Jacobin article. But the issue goes way beyond that. There's a
reason why so many present and former Trump team members are tied in with
not only the Putin regime but also with different Russian corporations
(such as Gazprom). The reason is that Trump, himself, has longstanding and
deep ties to Russian investors. And given the nature of Russian capitalism,
many of these investors are outright mobsters. In other words, the Russian
mafia. One of the most prominent is Felix Sater, but there are others too.
Sater, a convicted stock swindler, for example had a business card that
linked his name with Trump, traveled with Trump and is pictured with Trump.
Yet he's so unsavory that Trump denied even remembering him.

However, let's not go all "anti-Russian". Trump's personal helicopter
pilot, Joseph Weichselbaum, was also a convicted drug smuggler.

This is what's really scaring Trump - that any investigation into Russia's
role in the recent US elections would tend to spill over into revelations
of his direct financial ties. (My belief: That's the real reason Trump
won't release his tax statements; it would reveal those ties.)

And why don't the Democrats reveal some of this? Because former Obama
Justice Department officials as well as former FBI agents are also involved
in this network!

Prior to the 2016 presidential election, I would bet that most people
shared my mental image of the modern-day neo-Nazi movement: a hodgepodge
of tatted-up skinheads, gun-toting militiamen, hooded Ku Klux Klan
members, and miscellaneous bloodthirsty Turner Diaries cosplayers. While
those people still exist, an offshoot of the movement—which calls itself
the alternative right, or alt-right for short—has disguised itself in
urban chic.

Now, the hardcore reactionaries I’ve met more closely resemble Mike
Peinovich—or Mike Enoch, as he’s known in far-right circles—the chubby,
preppy, thirtysomething founder of white nationalist website The Right
Stuff and co-host of the Daily Shoah podcast.

On a recent April day, Enoch, a New York City–based web developer, stood
outside of the White House among dozens of like-minded white
nationalists. He’d come to the city to help lead a right-wing “anti-war”
rally against Trump’s recent action in Syria. Dressed in a wasp-y vest
and gingham shirt with his sunglasses perched on his head, Enoch blended
in nicely with the youthful fascists who have become ubiquitous in the
bizarro world of Trumpland. Like many other millennials of his ideology,
Enoch began as a conservative libertarian before finding his way to
white nationalism. By Enoch’s account, he’s also a card-carrying
pacifist. “I have been anti-war my whole political life,” he told me.
“It’s the thing that got me interested in politics, when the Iraq War
was starting, the opposition to George W. Bush’s war.”

Support for Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad—whose forces have been
responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of his own people in
the Syrian civil war—was strong, too. Speaking at the rally, Spencer
implored Trump to pursue peaceful relations with Assad, whom he called
“the rightful leader of Syria” and lauded as “a secular person, a person
of strength and stability.” Assad “might not be perfect,” Spencer
admitted, “but the world isn’t perfect.”

Kurd-Led Force Homes In on ISIS Bastion With Assent of U.S. and Syria Alike

After taking crucial nearby dam, SDF is poised to capture Raqqa,
Islamic State’s Syrian centerpiece

BEIRUT—A Kurdish-led military force backed by Washington and now
approved by Damascus is closing in on Islamic State’s stronghold of
Raqqa after taking the strategic Tabqa dam nearby.

As the Kurdish-led fighters supported by U.S. Special Operations
Forces on the ground inch closer to Raqqa, the question of who will
hold the city the day after it falls is becoming more urgent. Turkey,
a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and its Syrian
Arab rebel allies oppose the rival Kurds leading the battle and fear
they will try to hold onto the majority-Arab city after it is
captured.

Arab rebels particularly distrust the YPG, the Syrian Kurdish militia
that dominates the SDF, because it has used the U.S.-backed fight
against Islamic State to take over a large swath of territory across
northern Syria—including predominantly Arab cities and towns—with the
expressed goal of carving out a semi-autonomous Kurdish region. The
rebels and opposition activists have long accused the YPG of colluding
with the Syrian regime for its own benefit.

U.S. President Donald Trump has made clear he opposes the expensive
nation-building missions that have historically accompanied U.S.
counterterrorism operations to support local governments and prevent
insurgents from returning.

For these reasons, Western diplomats say the post-capture plan is for
the SDF to hand over the administration of Raqqa to a local civilian
council friendly to the Syrian regime. That council could eventually
transfer control of the city back to the regime, these diplomats said.

The formation of the local civilian council for Raqqa, composed of
both Kurds and Arabs, was announced last month. On Thursday, Russia’s
Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Moscow supports the
formation of local councils to administer territory taken from Islamic
State but said they must not circumvent the Syrian government’s
authority, in comments carried by Interfax news agency.

“The U.S. military will be going in [to Raqqa] and trying to figure
out who the tribal leaders are,” said an American official involved in
the anti-Islamic State campaign. “The regime knows these details. They
have a natural home-field advantage and have a way of slowly getting
back in. We won’t be in Raqqa in 2020, but the regime will be there.”

Western officials say the SDF operation that unfolded in the northern
Syrian city of Manbij last year could serve as a blueprint for Raqqa’s
eventual handover to Damascus. The Kurdish-led force took Manbij from
Islamic State in August and handed over some surrounding towns to the
Syrian and allied Russian armies in March.

Well, US megacorps have never been some sort of monolith, but rather

that fact in an organized manner.

Keep in mind that American corporations doing business in Nazi Germany
were mainly operating sub rosa except for Ford that was owned by an open
anti-Semite.

Take GE. This was not exactly an American corporation. GE in Germany was
owned 70 percent by German investors.

Coca-Cola operated in Nazi Germany but not with its own brand name but
as Fanta.

IBM sold tab machines that were used for the census but again like GE,
through a subsidiary that was 90 percent German-owned.

None of this is meant to get these outfits off the hook but there is a
huge contrast with the way American companies operate today:

McDonald's announced today that it plans to open 60 new restaurants in
Russia over the course of 2016.

The company's focus on affordable menus and local suppliers has proved
successful in the economic crisis, and it intends to ramp up expansion
efforts over the coming year.

The chain is one of the greatest symbols of American impact around the
world. Business Insider visited one in downtown Moscow during a trip to
Russia in 2013 — here's what it was like inside.

Even Putin could probably find a sneaker that he likes inside Nike's
(NKE) new Moscow store.

The sneaker giant cut the ribbon on Sunday to a massive 23,455 square
foot, five-story store in the Russian capital. Similar to other Nike
flagship stores, the Moscow location features a Nike+ Running Trial
Zone, Nike+ Football Trial Zone and areas for product customization such
as engraving (some pictures below). There is even space for a person to
get their shoes cleaned, while the second floor is mostly dedicated to
limited-edition sneakers.

yes we should condemn any Turkish bombings of course, but I am just
wondering why Chris felt it important to send this piece of standard
Stalinist-style propaganda? The "FSA gangs" did this and that, as we
know because the media of a US-backed and Assad-backed one-party state
says so.

"The areas intensely targeted by the Turkish state after the Astana
Treaty are villages and hamlets like Sheikh İsa, Tal Rifat, Um-Hosh
and Ayn Daqne liberated by the revolutionary forces in intense clashes
last year."

Yeh, Tal Rifaat and the surrounding areas, were not regions the YPG
liberated from ISIS with help from US air strikes, they are
Arab-majority areas the YPG conquered from the FSA/rebels with help
from Russian air strikes, in February 2016. They expelled the
population of Tal Rifaat, who live in Azaz and other towns closer to
the Turkish border. In a famous scene, YPG thugs gloated over the
corpses of FSA defenders of Tal Rifaat. This si the town, by the way,
from where the FSA/rebels launched their massive attack on ISIS in
January 2014 that permanently cleared ISIS out of the whole of western
Syria.

As for Sheikh Isa, this is a town between the YPG-conquered Menagh air
base and the (still) rebel-held town Mare, which hadn't been conquered
by the Russian/YPG attack in February 2016. Around half way through
last year, ISIS was launching a furious offensive against Mare from
the east. At that point, the ultra-opportunist YPG (sorry, "SDF"),
decided this was a good time to *collaborate with ISIS* by launching
an offensive against the rebels in Sheikh Isa and Mare from the west.
Under attack from both sides, the Mare rebels were offered the great
deal by the YPG that they only have to cede Sheikh Isa, and the YPG
will stop aiding the ISIS attack on Mare.

"We do not accept the Turkish state’s invasion operation." No, but the
Russian state's invasion, that's OK, we collaborate with that. But not
as much as with the Americans - they are fantastic.
