[nysbirds-l] Late Report: Black-legged Kittiwake; Beacon Waterfront, Hudson River
While looking at the Franklin's Gull at the Beacon Waterfront Park. I was scanning out in the river and picked up what I first thought was a Bonaparte's Gull. After the bird drifted a little closer and eventually flew, some diagnostic features were observed and photos were taken which later determined that it was a Black-legged Kittiwake. I couldn't relocate the bird and lost it in a larger flock so I couldn't say which direction it flew but I wanted to get the word out for those who were going to be near the Hudson River tomorrow. Photos and field notes will be on eBird tonight. Aside from the Franklin's, there was also an immature & adult Iceland Gull and a Glaucous Gull bouncing between the Beacon and Newburgh sides. Bird was first seen at the south end near the last bit of ice and by the time I left it was moving towards the center of the lake. There are a few spots to pull off along the road. After striking out during high tide today around 2:30, the skimmer is now on the exposed rocks. No sign of the Caspian Tern or previously reported shorebirds. [nysbirds-l] Flyover Sandhill Cranes - Yonkers NY
I just watched 3 Sandhill Cranes flying SW over Yonkers in the area between I-87 and the Saw Mill River Parkway. Before I lifted up my binos I initially thought they were swans or a Great Blue Heron based on size but when I saw them through the binoculars their extended neck, longer and more slender shape instantly ruled out any swan or heron species. [nysbirds-l] Caspian Tern- Jamaica Bay (belated report)
My apologies for sending this out a day late but I had 1 Caspian Tern drop in at the North end at 3:42pm yesterday. It preened for a few minutes then flew West. The few shorebirds that were around were hiding in the reeds due to a HY Peregrine Falcon and a Merlin cruising the pond. The only notables were a White-rumped Sandpiper and a Wilson's Snipe which flushed right in front of me as I was leaving through the south end. Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler were well represented along with the usual inhabitants. 1 Kentucky Warbler singing deep in the woods. Had 2 great looks after some waiting. Currently standing here : 41.297615,-73.997460 looking across the brook where the bird is. Take the path on the right where the trail splits for "Historic Sites" and "Herbert Cemetery" and the bird was around where the bridge is. I stood on the East side of the brook looking West at the bird, giving it plenty of distance. Plenty of birds to see this morning! My apologies for the late report. I made my yearly hike up Slide yesterday morning hoping for Bicknell's Thrush among the other usual characters.The weather was perfect, no wind or clouds in sight. I began at 0630 and finished at 1200. The hike was more quiet than previous years but I chalked that up to going up in the middle of the breeding season when most of the birds were most likely on eggs. I saw/heard the following: Red-eyed Vireo-3 Least Flycatcher- 2 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher- 2 (birds simultaneously calling below first "lookout" on the left side of the trail) Black-throated Green Warbler- 4 Black-throated Blue Warbler- 6 American Redstart- 2 Blackburnian Warbler- 4 Magnolia Warbler -1 Yellow-rumped Warbler- 5 Blackpoll Warbler- 4 Ovenbird- 7 Black-and-white Warbler- 1 Purple Finch- 1 Dark-eyed Junco- 3 White-throated Sparrow- 4 Hermit Thrush- 1 Swainson's Thrush- 2 (heard and seen close to the summit) Bicknell's Thrush- 3 (maybe 4, birds were heard on the summit and when I stopped to try and see one, one flushed from above me and 2-3 others were zipping around calling and singing. I saw/heard the following: Red-eyed Vireo-3 Least Flycatcher- 2 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher- 2 (birds simultaneously calling below first lookout on the left side of the trail) Black-throated Green Warbler- 4 Black-throated Blue Warbler- 6 American Redstart- 2 Blackburnian Warbler- 4 Magnolia Warbler -1 Yellow-rumped Warbler- 5 Blackpoll Warbler- 4 Ovenbird- 7 Black-and-white Warbler- 1 Purple Finch- 1 Dark-eyed Junco- 3 White-throated Sparrow- 4 Hermit Thrush- 1 Swainson's Thrush- 2 (heard and seen close to the summit) Bicknell's Thrush- 3 (maybe 4, birds were heard on the summit and when I stopped to try and see one, one flushed from above me and 2-3 others were zipping around calling and singing. Point blank looks. Wood Thrush- 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch- 1 Golden-crowned Kinglet- 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet- 2 Winter Wren- 5 Black-capped Chickadee- 1 All in all it was a great day! On the walk in from the Playland parking lot on the left side of the road across from 3 white garbage trucks there was a Connecticut Warbler loosely associating with 2 Savannah Sparrows and a Common Yellowthroat. The bird flew out of the bush and it's white eye ring couldn't have been more obvious along with its brown hood. It looked to be a 1st Winter bird. I was about 10' away and had Common Yellowthroat in the area for comparison. Figured I'd get the word out! As posted earlier, 1 Hudsonian Godwit flew in around 3:30. The bird stayed but began to move frequently as time went on and it eventually flew North and out of sight at 6:02. Other birds such as the Baird's Sandpipers, Western Sandpipers, White-rumped Sandpipers, and Stilt Sandpipers were still present when I left. [nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl on the River
After my initial sighting of the owl earlier this morning, it remained among the barges. The workers enjoyed it's company and thought it was "cool" and "awesome". I work on this sight and saw no signs of harassment. I last saw the owl at 4:00 pm on a barge with piles on it. No humans around and very minimal boat traffic at this hour since the work day is almost done That is most likely where the bird will stay for the night since it had its eyes closed as I passed by. Piermont Pier and the river towns on both sides of the Hudson should keep their eyes peeled! Currently being seen at Cupsogue on the flats next to a Royal Tern for great comparison. Larger, decurved bill and shaggier crest. I am standing across from the flats currently, the water is getting fairly high. If anybody is familiar with how to get across safely during high tide, I will be here for a while.
