Having yet to see my first snowy this season, this afternoon I headed down
to Dune Rd., and wound up covering it completely, from Shinnicock Inlet
(Hampton Bays) to Cupsogue Co. Park (West Hampton Dunes)...with no change
in that dubious distinction ! I did, however, see an A.Bittern in open
water

discovered yesterday was seen again today.
It has been near the Wallkill Correctional Facility.
Yesterday it was near McKendrick Road west of Rt. 208 on correctional

Probably last of season (although first of 2014 Year for me) Snowy owl still
present yesterday in Hampton Bays, along with my FOS American Oystercatcher.
Also sighted many Brants, red-breaasted mergansers and many flashy red wing

There's currently a Snowy Owl sitting on the Douglaston pier (east side of
Little Neck Bay, Queens). The gate is locked, so nobody should be bothering
it (and it's safe to report) and it will stick around a while.

This morning I drove through EPCAL - both runways and came up with nothing.

In light of the recent incursion of Snowy Owls I thought the
following selection of papers would be of interest. They attempt to
questions about the aging and sexing of Snowy Owls.
The first paper on the list also discusses local movements of these
birds on Long Island and New York City,
According to the Birds of North America the Snowy owl is diurnal and
hunts in the almost continuous light of arctic summer.

Beautiful episode of the PBS series Nature is available on line. I
don't know enough to comment on its accuracy, but it is definitely
entertaining!

The Snowy Owl at Floyd Bennett Field is being seen now by a bunch of birders.
Remember that the fields are off limits so the owl must be viewed from the road.

A while ago a NPS Police vehicle drove by the Snowy Owl on the closed central
runway and flushed it. Eventually, after a brief time at a couple of different
perches (including up in a tree), and after drawing some attention at this
point from some American Crows, it flew off in the direction

A snowy owl was found at Edith Read at approximately 10:30 AM. I viewed the
bird with Tom Burke from the orange tape at the overlook over the beach on the
sound side. Take the path from the parking lot through the bamboo to the
overlook. The bird was on the rocky point.

Finished with chores by 1045, I stepped outside, saw and felt what a glorious
day it was, and decided to head out to Montauk, despite the late start. Once on

located right at the breach and then moved on to the marshy areas on the bay.
