I thought of sharing a few of my observations on the YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLER that was seen yesterday at Hempstead Lake LI.
Initially, I thought this bird had white lores, but was missing the white
chin for *albilora* + the bill appeared too big for that race. After
obtaining closer views, I was
Yesterday afternoon, Betsy picked out an interesting junco under our
feeders. We believe it is a female Oregon Junco. You can see two photos of

I plan on writing to Seth, not as a potential contestant (I meet none of the
qualifications), but as a normal, well-groomed, intelligent person who enjoys
birding as a way to enjoy nature, have fun with friends, and embark on an
occasional trip to chase down a bird on my personal Most Wanted
Not to sound too curmudgeon, but seems like just another idiotic non-reality
“reality” show that I personally hope will not get made, it’s freak birders
instead of housewives, duck hunters, speed cookers, pawners, pickers, axers,
alligator shooters, Kardashians, ad nauseum. Why indulge this

I took a short walk around Rockefeller State Park this morning, hoping to
see my first warblers of the season. Instead I saw a ridiculous 26 Palm
warblers with 2 Pine warblers as a bonus. Most wre found in a short
stretch along the Pocantico River Trail. An electrically brilliant male
Eastern
A early Yellow Warbler sang unseen at Wertheim NWR late this morning,
but did not linger, his song rapidly dwindling into the distance.
At Smith Pt. Park, among the many Grackles, Redwings, and Cowbirds,
there was a scattering of Flickers and small flocks of Juncos and
sparrows, mostly Song

Palm, Pine, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Sapsucker, Flicker, Kinglets and Rusty
Blackbirds FOS Chipping Sparrow, but no Yellow-throated.

Thanks to a birder on 5th Ave. for pointing out the location of the
AMERICAN WOODCOCK just as I was submitting my checklist. One of the birds
has moved to the southeast storage area on the 40th St. side of the park.
It was under the hedges to the east of the London Plane tree on the upper
level of
Vesper Sparrow still present near model airplane field with about 12-20
Savannah Sparrows and 1 Field Sparrow. Other birds present in the area:
1 American Kestrel
1 Killdeer
American Robins
European Starlings
Song Sparrows
Northern Flickers
Carolina Wren
White-breasted Nuthatch
Red-bellied
Highlights of a stroll around Bryant park about 3:30pm: American
Woodcock poking
around for the ground in the SE maintenance area, good views from the SE
park entrance side. Pretty calm bird; a park worker dragged some trash
bags past him, and he flinched but did not flush to deeper cover.
4/9/13 Long Lake, NY (Northern Hamilton Co.)
There were very few Golden-crowned Kinglets that stayed north this winter.
It appears they have returned! One was singing outside our house this
morning and I found quite a few while out birding midday. It was the same
situation for Evening
Kissena Corridor hosted a large number of chipping sparrows and one field
sparrow this evening. Only 1 palm warbler just before sunset. The park was
very busy and the birds kept flying away from passers by just as I was about to
take photos.

rather drab-plumaged Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warbler to at least a couple of
Louisiana Waterthrushes (2 were initially seen early by Paul Sweet's group,

Tuesday afternoon, April 9, I visited High Rock Park and Clove Lakes Park.
After Monday's fantastic day of birding Clove Lakes Park only, I thought I
would head to High Rock Park in the middle of Staten Island's Greenbelt to see
what had arrived. It is also the most pristine natural area in SI.
But for the past two summery days over two dozen Song Sparrows have been
combing the freshly sodded expanse with occasional cooling sprinkle, mostly to
themselves except for an occasional hopping Hermit Thrush. Today I saw my
first warbler in Bryant for the year, a bright yellow Palm (Eastern)
