People searching for the western tanager in Green-Wood please be mindful that
it is still an active cemetery and to behave respectfully. There are currently
a lot of people in a relatively small area, so spread the word that yelling,
sitting or standing on headstones, etc., is inappropriate. Als

Just confirmed the Ash-throated Flycatcher at the Dell Water. It was
flycatching on the side of the pond where there are 3 in hill mausoleums. It
then flew to the opposite side by the bee hives.

just about to start digging a new grave right where everyone was standing

Late yesterday I went to Bush Terminal Park hoping to locate Brooklyn's

Heydi Lopes & I waited out the morning's early downpour under the shelter at
the end of the Peninsula. At around 8:15am, a few minutes after Heydi left to
stake out the patch of phragmites by the edge of the Peninsula Meadow, I
spotted the Least Bittern flying from Duck Island, west, passed the
A Lark Sparrow, originally reported from Green-Wood Cemetery yesterday, was
relocated this afternoon by Daisy Paul and seen by many. As a nice bonus, it
was hanging out with a Clay-colored Sparrow.

Two Cackling Geese are still present in Prospect Park on the lake. They are
located in a small cove just on the south side of the three sisters island.
That is across the road from a landmark called the peristyle which is near the
parade grounds.

The white pelican was still present at Jamaica Bay this afternoon from
around 12:30 - 1pm. It was staying, primarily, in the south end of
Grassy Bay, not far from the East Pond spillway. I was not able to
locate the HUGO.

Today Heydi Lopes, Keir Randall and I spent several hours birding
Prospect Park. While there weren't any rarities to unusual species to
report, the diversity and abundance of migrant songbirds was pretty
impressive for the last weekend of August. Beginning at the North end

The Baird's Sandpiper was still present at Floyd Bennett Field at 7am
today. It was feeding at the (shrinking) puddles on the runway just
east of the cricket field. At the cricket field there were 20
Semipalmated Plovers and 34 Black-bellied Plovers.

At 11am there were 4 Buff-breasted Sandpipers on the small field adjacent to
the Aviator Sports parking lot in Floyd Bennett Field. They were associating
with a flock of 18 Killdeer. They were still present when I left at 12:50pm.

Prospect Park was loaded with sparrows today. The nice mix of sparrows
was dominated by a very large flock of juncos and chippings. I had

A termite hatch out on Lookout Hill in Prospect Park yesterday morning
created a spectacular showing, of what seemed like, an endless stream
of hungry songbirds. The highlight of the event was a Cerulean Warbler

At around 8am today Ed Crowne spotted a MOURNING WARBLER in Prospect
Park's Midwood. It was on the slope at the western edge of the forest
a short distance from the Boulder Bridge. The bird was subsequently

Once the morning fog lifted at Coney Island I realized that there was an
unusually large number of Northern Gannets sitting in the water off of the
Steeplechase Pier. I counted 131, but there were lots more flying around much

I concur with Mardi, my postings were never meant to imply that ALL
photographers are a problem. Like every endeavor, amateur or professional,
there are people who play by the rules and those whom think the rules don't
apply. Let's not condemn a whole group of people just because there are a few

Today I lead a Linnaean Society trip to Floyd Bennett Field and Dead Horse Bay.
While many of the expected passerines were nearly non-existent, we did have
several highlights that more than made up for it.

Today I led a Linnaean Society group on what has become my usual winter walking
loop of Coney Island, which includes the western end of the boardwalk to Coney
Island Creek and back. When back at the boardwalk we also continued for a short

At around 8am this morning Heydi Lopes and I spotted a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER
in Prospect Park. The bird was feeding in a pine tree on Lookout Hill near the
top of the stairway that ascends the hill from the Maryland Monument. It was

A KENTUCKY WARBLER was spotted at Prospect Park's Lookout Hill at around 7am
today by Ed Crowne and Philip Pane. It was relocated by myself and several
others at 10:15am. The bird was singing frequently as it moved about the
understory on the slope opposite the Quaker Cemetery and above Center D
Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery was slightly quieter this morning compared to
last week's tour. I tallied 13 species of warbler, with overall abundance lower
that over the previous few days - although the early fog and drizzle could have

Park while on Tom Stephenson's walk. I only found out about it recently and
