[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival

2017-08-09 Thread Lloyd Spitalnik
Hi Everyone,
Contrary to Sy Schiff's speculation that the shore bird festival might be
cancelled, I can assure you that is going to take place on August 26th as
scheduled.
I took a walk on the north end of the East Pond this afternoon with Tom
Burke and we had no problem walking up to "Dead Man's Cove".
Earlier in the morning Tom walked the south end and was able to make it to
the Raunt and points further north.
Rubber boots are a must at this point but the water was no higher than my
ankles.
Tom and I were there at low tide so quantity of birds were low but we did
have 4 Stilt Sandpipers, 4 Short-billed Dowtichers, several Semipalmated
and Least Sandpipers, 2 Spotted Sandpipers, an adult Little Blue Heron,
several Northern Waterthrush, a Black Skimmer and Osprey flying overhead.
I'm sure I'm leaving somethings out but you get the idea.
Don Riepe, Kevin Karlson, Tom Burke and Gail Benson, and I are all looking
forward to seeing you at the festival.
For more info on the festival's schedule you can go to the NYC Audubon's
website.
If you have any questions, write to me and I'll send you a reply.

Some photos from yesterday's Shorebird Festival can be seen here
I should add that during yesterday's presentation, I learned that the
superintendent of Gateway, Jennifer Nersesian, announced that the breach to the
West Pond will be closed. That is the text message I received while I was at
the north end of the East Pond with a small group who stayed with me.  While
there is no timeline or details associated with her announcement, it has to be
seen as a positive development that we at least have on RECORD, someone from
National Park Service committing to closing the breach.
l want to also add that I am grateful that Lloyd, Don and Kevin continue to
organize this event which is so much needed at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. I
hope they continue to do so for many years to come. If you missed the event
yesterday, think about attending next year. The usage of places like the refuge
for wildlife observation is very key to how decisions are made in maintaining
and enhancing existing wildlife habitats.
Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival

2015-08-24 Thread Lloyd Spitalnik
10th Annual Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival

Come join us this Saturday August 29th for the Jamaica Bay Shorebird
Festival sponsored by NYC Audubon, Gateway National Recreation Area,
American Littoral Society and your hosts Don Riepe, Kevin Karlson and
Lloyd Spitalnik.

We’ll meet at the visitor’s center located in Broad Channel, Queens, NY at
7:30am.

There will be coffee and snacks before we start the festivities.

At about 8am there will be a field trip to the East Pond where you’ll be
able to learn about these long distance migrants as they make their return
trip from the breeding grounds up north. We should see Least Sandpiper,
Semipalmated Sandpiper, Semipalmated Plover, Black-bellied Plover, Lesser
and Greater Yellowlegs and Short-billed Dowitcher. Other species are
usually there as well. We’ll probably have a few surprise visitors.

After the walk we’ll have a few indoor presentations. An hour break for
lunch and then another guided walk. Stay for the final presentation given
by Kevin Karlson. He is a co-author of the Shorebird Guide. It’s the best
guide book for identifying these challenging critters. His talk will be on
his new book “Birding by Impression.

Although the event is free we urge you to contribute a nominal $20.00 to
help defray the costs for putting on the festival.

You should wear a pair of boots or old shoes you don’t care about getting
dirty. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have them. A camera
with a 300mm or larger lens is optional.

Hope to see you there.

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival

2014-08-13 Thread Lloyd Spitalnik
Hi again,
A few things to clarify.

1. There is no limit to the amount of people who can attend. There was a
typo saying "limited to 35. We usually get more than 100 people at the
festival.

2. For the East Pond walk "sensible shoes" would be boots as there are
definitely muddy and shallow water areas you'll have to get through.

3. Unfortunately we'll not be able to walk all the way around the West
Pond. Since superstorm Sandy there is a wide breach of about 50'. We can
only walk out to about where bench 6 is. We can go the other way and check
out the gardens for early migrants.

4. Lastly, please sign the petition to restore the West Pond. Every
signature counts.
Here is the link

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival

2014-07-23 Thread Lloyd Spitalnik
In my last post I abbreviated one of the sponsors as Gateway NRA. So
there's no confusion NRA in this case is National Recreation Area. It
certainly has nothing to do with the National Rifle Association.

2010-08-10 Thread Lloyd Spitalnik
Just a reminder that the shorebird festival takes place this Saturday
starting at 8:30am. We'll meet at the Visitor's Center. There are also a few
spaces left for the Photo Workshop on Sunday as well as one space for the ID
workshop. For further information go to my blog at
http://.blog.lloydspitalnikphotos.com.

Hope to see you there,

Lloyd
