Exactly

How are you supposed to connect something like a neck induction loop to such
a device?

Yes some of the rolls Royce hearing aids have wireless connectivity but very
few people have the money to purchase them.

But I suppose this segment of the market is so small that Apple does not
really care.

The problem with all this forward thinking is that it leaves the hearing
impaired out. Jonathan Mosen has done some very good writing on this topic.
I personally have the equipment to deal with the loss of the headphone jack.
But in thinking of what it will mean for others, I think it is a stupid idea
at this time and, if it is just to make the damned phone a hair thinner, it
is clearly not worth it and is just another money-making angle for Apple.
But this one is coming at the expense of a fairly large and growing segment
of the population.

Well, here is a link to Jonathan's well-written post for those who want
another perspective. I think he makes good points and I do not see the
advantage at this time of dumping the jack. A lot of what ifs don't cut

I recall something in the past with an adapter and a camera kit and the

Set Top Box MINIX Neo X8 Further Progress

2016-03-10 Thread Dane Trethowan
Okay, I received the box 2 days ago, had a very short play with the box
Yesterday morning and a longer exploration a few hours ago.

I'm surprised at just how accessible Android on this box is and I've
been able to access and use many of the features with just the remote
controller though a keyboard - whether it be Bluetooth or USB - is
certainly a handy adition at times particularly when it comes to
entering Passwords and the like.

I'm not saying that entering Passwords isn't impossible to do with the
remote controller I just haven't found out how its doen yet if indeed it
can be done, when on the keyboard with the remote control nothing seems
to speak with Talkback so I might try Shine and see if that makes any
difference.

So having everything set up to my liking it was time to have a look at
playing media with this box which is precisely what I bought it for and
lookign round the selection of preinstalled Apps I discovered a Media
Center App.

The App seems to be quite a versatile one, I've not gone into it
thoroughly but it would appear that you can stream from - play media to
another device from the box - or stream to - take media from a server or
another device and stream it to the box - using DLNA and Airplay, didn't
get the Airplay functions to work but the DLNA functions were easy
enough to set, I continued listening to the 26 Hours serial through the
MINIX Neo X8 which was connected to my Bose Soundlink Mini via Bluetooth.

Unfortunatley the buttons in the player of Media Center aren't labeled
but they're arranged in a logical order so if you're familiar with the
buttons on a CD player than you'll know exactly where the previous,
play/pause and next buttons are so this bets the question is there any
way to creat labels for Talkback to identify these buttons and import
them onto the MINIX Neo X8?

Europe approves common charger standard for mobe-makers

   17 Mar 2014 at 01:01, Simon Sharwood

The European Parliament has signed off on its proposal to force mobile phone
makers to adopt a common charging standard.

The new regulation means that if mobe-makers' want to meet European standards
for “radio equipment” they'll have to ensure their products will have to be
chargeable using micro-USB. But there are ways out of the proposal: the
communiqué about the vote on the issue says “... it will be up to the European
Commission to decide which specific types of radio equipment will have to meet
this requirement”.

The vote also means that European Union members have two years in which to
implement the regulation, with 2017 the target date for compliance by
mobe-makers.

That leaves plenty of time in which to lobby for exemptions.

Most mobe-makers have moved to micro-USB charging, but the likes of Apple
prefer their own arrangements on the basis that their technology is superior.
With more and more of a phone's synching needs being met wirelessly and a
single pin sufficing for charging over USB, just how Apple can dodge this one
remains to be seen.

If we assume Cupertino insists on its own standard, perhaps slipping
an adaptor into the box for future sold-in-Euroland iDevices will do
the trick. ®

Micro USB for mobile is now old hack, make way for USB C and Apple are already

I'm just looking at the post talking about Bluetooth, Bluetooth does in
fact transmit in Compressed audio - well most standards of Bluetooth do -.

Most equipment out there now for audio - unless you get the very cheap
stuff - is Bluetooth 3.0 which supports a wide variety of different
audio profiles.

I sincerely hope that Apple considers using Bluetooth atpX lossless in
the iPhone 7? I'm not sure if the hardware even exists for this in the
iPhone 6 range but regardless of that all the other manufacturers have
adopted it including Samsung, LG and so on - sadly not Google -.

Bluetooth has been with us 20 years and the quality of the audio - with
the standards evolving - has improved dramatically, I remember how my
old Ericson phone sounded in 1995 with the Bluetooth hands free,
absolutely God Damn awful.

There’s a very good reason they’re removing the plug, if they take the plug
away then the phone can be made thinner.

I’m not fazed by such a decision myself as there are work arounds if I really
wanted to use an older pair of headphones.

A Bluetooth adapter might be one way around it or perhaps a dedicated pair of
headphones that run from the dock of the iPhone which sound better than the
analogue phones anyway due to their direct digital design.

Technology is always changing and those sockets are 50 years old in design at
least, you don’t see iPhones using valves do you? Imagine how big they’d be if
they did.

Okay well that's one way of looking at things .

I've just been reading a review of the Samsung Galaxy S7 which has a
Headphones socket on it but still manages to stay waterproof amazingly,
can't work out how Samsung have accomplished that without a sealing
cover but there we are.

Hmm, interesting and that's about the time the USB C standard was
launched so perhaps we'll see more of that in the future?

The Nexus P6 smartphone already has the USB C connector as part of it.

If we assume Cupertino insists on its own standard, perhaps slipping an adaptor
into the box for future sold-in-Euroland iDevices will do the trick. ®

I beg to disagree with you Mary as I'm one of those hearing impaired
people and Apple - as have the folk at Google - have done some really
wonderful stuff when it comes to the incusion of deaf-blind people in
the scheme of things.

Bluetooth is an everyday word in the technology of deaf-blind people and
hearing instruments these days, I'm on my third set of Bluetooth enabled
hearing instruments and both Samsung Galaxy S6 and Apple iPhone 6S work
a treat with these so I've no reason to think that the S7 won't be any
different.

Even when I'm not using Bluetooth with my mobile devices - which is most
of the time by the way - the speaker can be made to go very loud with
Voiceover and that's just one speaker, imagine what an iPhone would
sound like with two?

There are a lot of things one can customise with the iPhone to make life
easier with hearing instruments, one can even control the hearing
instrument with an iPhone, use the iPhone as a microphone for your
hearing instruments - extremely handy when you're enjoying someone elses
company at a table for two in a noisy environment -, send mono audio to
your hearing instruments which can be useful for those who have better
hearing in one ear than the other etc.

Really the point here is that - if you want to use technology - then
that technology is continually changing and evolving - in most cases for
the better - so the user has two distinct choices, use what they're
using which will eventually fall behind and be replaced or keep up with
what's going on and accept the changes as they happen - that doesn't
mean that one must have the latest devices on hand of course -.

RE: Apple's iPhone 7 WILL dump the headphone socket | Daily Mail Online

2016-03-10 Thread Hamit Campos
Ah okay. That's cool. I just was asking a philisofical question I guess.
Suppose it's true and I actually am not too shocked at this I've heard that
idea before. But suppose it does happen and they never ever ever ever bring
it back, then what? All though who knows because this is another guy. This
ain't Steve no more. So if it did happen and there was enough backlash
depending on Tim it might come back on 7S. Because I remember that Steve was
the suck it kind of dude.

Hi,
It's a real shame. We are many, who like the analog style headphones so I'll
skip this update and stay with 6S.
Any reason why they're removing the plug? I mean they don't take up much
space.

I can't wait to see what the new headphones are like, and even what they can
do now that they have digital capabilities. It might not be just audio that
goes through them.

They're removing it to make more room for even better things. Would you want a
serial port on your phone? Or a floppy or CD drive? Let's think different.
Let's think of possibilities and the future.

Another thing. What if they make headphones with a lightning connector? What if
they have two lightning ports on the phone? What if the headphones can monitor
health data like the Apple watch? What if they can do virtual reality stuff,
like moving sound as one moves the head? Think.

Re: Apple's iPhone 7 WILL dump the headphone socket | DailyMail Online

2016-03-10 Thread Dane Trethowan
I’m really looking forward to the stereo speakers the article talks about.

As the iPhone line has progressed the quality of the speakers have improved.

I got my old iPhone 3GS out just now and boy, that speaker is absolutely God
Damn Awful compared to the speaker in the iPhone 6S or the 6.

Now if an iPhone 7 had two of those speakers - the other would obviously go
where the headphone socket now is - that phone would sound very nice indeed.

The article does talk about stereo speakers being in the 7.

And the Lightning Dock connector is a far more functional connector than the
Headphones socket is.

Actually the headphones socket used by Apple isn't universal at all, its been
adapted by Apple to suit there needs.

If you look at an Apple Headphone socket for want of a better description
you'll see it has extra terminals for the plug for example for one thing.

The Minijack you'll find in your standard walkman device will likely have 3
terminals, in your standard bedside radio 2 terminals - if its only mono - but
on the IOS devices it contains 5 terminals and obviously the more terminals
that are put on one of those plugs then the more flimbsy is the whole
arrangement.

exactly! the headphone socket was a lot more universal, as it could be used for
more than just headphones.
a good situation I can think off for example, is that there are now some very
good musical instrument apps available for the iPhone, which make life a lot
easier for blind musicians. with the problems, especially the delays associated
with bluetooth, and the dock/lightning port already being taken up with a music
keyboard, what is left to get audio from the iPhone in to an amp or mixer? the
good old headphone socket.

There’s a very good reason they’re removing the plug, if they take the
plug away then the phone can be made thinner.

I’m not fazed by such a decision myself as there are work arounds if I
really wanted to use an older pair of headphones.

A Bluetooth adapter might be one way around it or perhaps a dedicated
pair of headphones that run from the dock of the iPhone which sound
better than the analogue phones anyway due to their direct digital design.

Technology is always changing and those sockets are 50 years old in
design at least, you don’t see iPhones using valves do you? Imagine
how big they’d be if they did.

Yes, delay can be a problem particularly when it comes to speech.

Some Bluetooth devices do have a pronounced problem with delay whilst
others don't, the delay is there but its less than a quarter of a second.

Perhaps Apple might make the Bluetooth system a little more configurable
as it is on the Android devices I have here, I can set speech and music
- along with other audio sources - to go through different channels,
music say through Bluetooth and speech through the internal speaker of
the device itself.

Personally I think its only a matter of time before more manufacturers
of devices ditch the headphones socket in their devices.

There is quite a delay that is annoying. That is why I still use my trusty
analog headset for now. I haven't figured out a way to improve the latency.
I wish I could, because I want to rid myself of as many connections and
wires as possible.

Imagine how big they’d be if
they did.

Now to be fair September is a long way off but - if you read the article

The 6S and 6S+ are remarkably strong and robust models, they're actually
thicker than the 6 and 6+ phones were to accommidate that extra steel
frame to make them stronger.

So if we take the headphones socket out we can leave that steel frame or
something similar in place and make the phone thinner? I guess that's
what Apple is thinking about but I'm not surprised that some are making
mountains and of molehills over this, quite amusing actually.

given the prices of the phones, and the problems that are already showing

starting to become a problem! when you fork out that much for something, I
think it is reasonable to expect it to last, with out having to treat it so
delicately as you seem to have to with the flimsy stuff that seems to be the
in thing these days. I can certainly think of a good few benefits to having
the phones made a bit thicker.
1, since we are talking about speakers, I will kick off with that a thicker
phone could very possibly be fitted with a speaker/speakers with a
better/wider frequency response.
2, a thicker phone could use a considerably higher capacity battery, giving
greatly extended battery life in demanding situations.
and/or 3, a thicker phone would have more room for possibly more storage
memory, and/or a more powerful CPU.

The thickness or lack thereof, is that a real problem? There are benefits to
be had, stereo speakers for one thing could be made a great deal of use of,
not just for music but for games, mobility Apps and the phone generally
being a little louder than it is now.

To illustrate the point a little if I may, I have an iPad Mini.

No, not quite the same as an iPhone given the Mini is a little harder but it
does have stereo speakers whereas my previous iPads didn’t.

The sound given that extra speaker was noticed the minute I enabled
Voiceover.

Well apart from your suggestion regarding toilet paper and iPhones
, headphones vary in quality sound too but the iPhone was never
meant for quality sound anyway, it doesn't use a Lossless Bluetooth
profile - well not yet at any rate - and if you want quality sound then
you pay for a better headset whether that be Bluetooth, Analogue or
anything else.

True this. Also I did forget about the lightning ones. That would sound much

Imagine how big they’d be if
they did.

Re: Apple's iPhone 7 WILL dump the headphone socket | DailyMail Online

2016-03-10 Thread goshawk on horseback
given the prices of the phones, and the problems that are already showing
themselves with some of the thinner and larger models, such as the 6plus for
example, with them being able to get bent so easily, I would say yes, it is
starting to become a problem! when you fork out that much for something, I
think it is reasonable to expect it to last, with out having to treat it so
delicately as you seem to have to with the flimsy stuff that seems to be the
in thing these days.

Voiceover.

I use the Bose OE Sound Link headphones, and the latency is not good at all.
There is quite a delay that is annoying. That is why I still use my trusty
analog headset for now. I haven't figured out a way to improve the latency.
I wish I could, because I want to rid myself of as many connections and
wires as possible.

Re: Apple's iPhone 7 WILL dump the headphone socket | Daily Mail Online

2016-03-10 Thread Dane Trethowan
There’s a very good reason they’re removing the plug, if they take the plug
away then the phone can be made thinner.

I’m not fazed by such a decision myself as there are work arounds if I really
wanted to use an older pair of headphones.

A Bluetooth adapter might be one way around it or perhaps a dedicated pair of
headphones that run from the dock of the iPhone which sound better than the
analogue phones anyway due to their direct digital design.

Technology is always changing and those sockets are 50 years old in design at
least, you don’t see iPhones using valves do you? Imagine how big they’d be if
they did.

Hi,
It's a real shame. We are many, who like the analog style headphones so I'll
skip this update and stay with 6S.
Any reason why they're removing the plug? I mean they don't take up much
space.

Best regards
Brian

I can't wait to see what the new headphones are like, and even what they can
do now that they have digital capabilities. It might not be just audio that
goes through them.
