I've lost sound on two web streams
I've lost sound on two streams that I know continue to broadcast. To avoid leaving lots of red herrings lying around, here's why this is a mystery to me: My speakers are working fine. I get sound on YouTube and other streams. I've had a sighted friend check one of the streams because the volume control is inaccessible with JAWS. She confirms that the sound is set to "loud" and the video is playing on the screen. The other soundless stream played briefly when I switched from IE11 and Firefox to Google Chrome. However, when I shut down that window and later returned to this stream, I got a message saying my browser wasn't compatible, and that's been the case ever since. I lost the sound on the first stream after I made a mistake with my speakers' remote control. It should have done nothing to affect the sound, and all my other sound streams and applications weren't affected. However, it did seem coincidental that I lost the sound at that moment and couldn't restore it. I have Windows 7, JAWS 18, and the three browsers I listed. Does anyone have any suggestions?

RE: Simple program for converting MP4 files to MP3
Tony and list, Audio Converter Plus is the one I figured out first, and so I installed it. If anyone is interested, here are a few details. First, the trial version will convert only half a file. You need to make a purchase for full-file conversion. Second, when you're presented with the dialog of conversion choices, there isn't an okay or equivalent button. You need to press F5 to start the process. Third, when you make the purchase, you'll get an email with the license key. Bring up the conversion dialog and enter your name in the "User" field. then tab once to a field that my screenreader, JAWS, didn't verbalize and paste in your license key. then tab over to "continue." The purchase will be registered, and you'll be spared this dialog afterwards. The cost is something like $25. I accidentally purchased a bundle costing another $10, so take greater care than I did. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Thursday, June 22, 2017 9:48 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: RE: Simple program for converting MP4 files to MP3 Thanks, Tony. RE: B MM1's Observations
Jamie, I've been looking for the answer I once got to your concern about the heat in the right speaker. I can't find the instruction for how to have the speaker turn off when the computer shuts down, but I now think B made it automatic. Please feel free to test this and, if I'm wrong, please re-post. I don't think I have more, but I'd double-check. Meanwhile, I've found on my Windows 7 system where you can find settings for the MM1 speakers. Via the Windows search field, go to "devices and printers" and arrow down through the list. Assuming you find MM1 there, as I do on my system, right-click for your options. I also find my MM1s in the " device manager" list. On my windows 7 system, I type "driver" into the Windows search field and arrow down through the results. Once I find "device manager," I press enter. I then press tab, and then I'm in a tree view. I press s for 'sound" to get close to the sound devices, where I press enter. I then arrow down to MM1. At that point I either press enter or right-click. (I can't remember which as I write.) Here, you confirm whether the drives are up to date. If you don't find your MM1s in these two places, here are instructions I received from B all the way back in 2012. The man who wrote knew I was using a screenreader, and so he took care to give directions with which I could work. However, I don't know if his instructions still apply, since I haven't needed to use them since. My system then was XP. The rest of this post is his words: If you have the front of the master speaker facing you, there should be 3 cables coming out the back on the bottom of the speaker. With the front of the speaker facing you, reach behind the speaker on the right side. The power cable will be coming out of the right side, on the back. If you follow this cable towards you, into the bottom of the speaker you will hit the power jack where the cable plugs into. Although the power cable can be a little difficult to remove I suggest unplugging this end instead of the end that plugs into the wall outlet. Once the power cord is unplugged hold in the power button. You can find it on the left side of the speaker, where the end of the metal band that wraps around the speaker runs into the cloth grille. You should hear it click when pressed in. Now reinsert the power cord on the bottom as you hold in the power button. Once the power cord is plugged in all the way and you let go of the power button the light should turn white. Now it is a matter of going into your device manager and looking for device with a yellow exclamation point under “Unknown Devices” then right-clicking on it and choosing “Update Driver Software”. Now choose to manually select the driver software from the directory where you installed the MM-1 Programmer. The directory name is usually “C:\Program Files\Bowers & Wilkins\MM-1 Programmer”. I’m a little unclear as to what the next steps would be for Windows XP, but after you choose to manually install the drivers and then select the MM-1 Programmer Directory then click “Next” it should ask you if you’re sure you want to install the drivers although they are not digitally signed. You will want to select “Install anyway”. After you select that then the drivers should install and you should be able to go back into the MM-1 Programmer application and then update the firmware with no problems. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Jamie Kelly Sent: Thursday, January 12, 2017 12:39 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: B MM1's Observations Dane your comments and contributions are always much valued. Yes, the right speaker stays hot unless you turn it off. When I bought the MM1s, it stayed hot even when I turned off my PC. A B rep told me the setting to change so that it automatically turns off when I close down or reboot the computer. Unfortunately, I don't remember what that setting is because I haven't needed to change it for all the years I've had the speakers. Like you, Mary, I turn mine off from time to time. Connecting PC to speakers
Hi. I can't get my PC to send sound to my stereo system's speakers. Let me explain. You'll soon see that I'm less than an amateur at this. The default speakers on my PC are MM1s. As many of you know, they don't rely on any on-board soundcard. Eight years ago, my PC was also connected by wire to my stereo system, in another part of the room. My PC has since been replaced, and that connection to the stereo was lost. For better or worse, the guy who installed the stereo ran the wire behind the wall, up over the ceiling and down to the back of the stereo. (My apartment was being completely renovated at the time.) As far as I can tell, that wire hooked into my Pc's microphone jack. I can confirm that there's a wire that comes out of the baseboard that does seem to correspond to the microphone jack. It is now plugged in to that jack. However, I still can't get the stereo to play. As I said, the MM1s are my default and I want them to stay that way. I've tried to configure the on-board soundcard to work with my stereo speakers, but without success. That's the best I can do to explain the problem. Can anyone suggest a solution or tell me where I've gone wrong? Thanks.

Hope/Pandora, cannot activate
Hi. I've written to Hope's creator about this problem, but haven't yet received a reply. I've been using Hope to access Pandora for a few years. After my hard drive failed, I had to restore all my applications, including Hope. I have a user key, which I've since confirmed. I've also installed Microsoft C++, as recommended on the troubleshooting page. The version of Hope installed on my system is 1.19, which appears to be the latest. Meanwhile, Pandora recognizes me because I get emails from Pandora from which I can link and listen to my stations. But I like the accessibility afforded by Hope. Here's what happens when I attempt to activate. After entering all the information, the usual menu appears—listen, create a station, search, etc. I type an artist's name in the search field, press enter on "search," then on one of the other buttons, such as "listen" or "create a station" (I think I have that button's name correct.) But nothing happens. Then I'll close out Hope and reopen it, only to find the activate dialog again. I've gone through this process several times and also rebooted. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am guessing that this is what you are encountering. What happens is that the connector part of the jack fits, but the plastic around the plug is too large to fit into the slot of the case. . You may have to either partly open or remove the case or find headphones that have a plug with a smaller plastic surround. Standard headphones are starting to come with slimmer plugs, but that isn't of much help if you already have headphones with a plug having a larger body. The bottom line here to be clear is that there are two separate issues. Is the plug the correct size to fit the jack in the iPhone, and will the case on your iPhone let the plug be pushed in far enough. RE: strange Bluetooth issue please help?
I tried this the other week and it worked. With the blue tooth speaker on, go into the control panel, then sound. I do this from Win7's Windows search field. Press enter on sound. If your system is like mine, you'll find that the first item is a list of speakers, headphones, etc. associated with your system. Note that my speaker is identified by my system as headphones. Highlight the Bluetooth device, then tab to the default option. Make it the default. I was afraid that by making my Bluetooth speaker the default, my system speakers would be knocked out, but it wasn't the case. When my Bluetooth speaker is on, now the system recognizes it. When I turn it off, my system reverts to my system speakers. RE: SoundCloud
An external speech synthesizer would eliminate this problem. I was asked to check this out from a user point of view and didn't find it accessible. I was asked on behalf of a charity project to play around with pre-uploaded music files and didn't find the free version much use. This guy wanted to upload audio files for the public to play such as info regarding government benefits etc. I'll paste my response to that guy below so you will see my experience. Walter. Hi Glyn. Firstly my apology; I was going through my deleted items, clearing them out when I came across your email. somehow it went straight to my deleted items rather than my in box. I would have replied sooner if I had seen it so sorry about that. OK. This is my initial input regarding the site. The music is displayed clearly and the play button is easy to find and activate but that is where the simplicity ends and the problems begin. Once you have activated the play button and the music plays, there is no way you can use the other play controls because the music drowns out the screen reader and as there is no keyboard short cut keys trying to use them is a hiding to nothing. You have to wait for a quiet passage in the audio before trying frantically to find a control but the quiet period never lasts long enough for you to find what you want. This is the free version and I noticed there is a Pro service but I guess you have to pay for that but there is no way of telling if the pro version is any more accessible than the free version and in any case, the people who would want to play any files you upload would use the free service. As I've said I've only looked at the site briefly and when I discovered getting to the play controls during playback was problematic I didn't go any further. As with WMP, if there were short cut keys such as Control+s for stop or Control+p for pause or control+m for mute or+control +r for rewind then it would be a good service to utilise. It might be you can map the keyboard and create these shortcuts but I'd need to look further into the site and I'll do that as soon as I can. Of course this initial summery is from a blind point of view. People with hearing loss or other disabilities but who have site, or even some partially sighted folk would be able to use it. Unfortunately though if you have no usable sight and in the absence of play controls accessibility then it wouldn't be of any use to them. Nonetheless you have to consider the majority of people who would use the facility and a minority group shouldn't be allowed to veto something because they are disenfranchised; you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you will never please all of the people all of the time. This doesn't mean that solutions aren't sought to resolve the disenfranchisement and that might be by linking to another service. I will ask on the tech lists I'm on to see what can be done and will get back to you. RE: Urgent Help needed to uninstall Windows Media Player
John, This is an incomplete answer, but two pointers: WMP shows up in the "Program files X86" folder, which on my system is in the root of the C drive. This may be why you didn't realize WMP was already there, as it probably was. So, if you have Windows 7, go to Computer, then hard drive, then this folder. Second, WMP has obviously hijacked your file associations. Again, assuming (big assumption) you have Win7, open Windows search and type "file association," without the quotations. When it shows up, press enter and tab through the choices. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of john riehl Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2015 10:26 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: Urgent Help needed to uninstall Windows Media Player Hi, everyone. No. Here's an exchange I had with NCH Software a year ago about how Express Rip organizes CD tracks. Although it doesn't directly answer your question, it does so by implication. I share the frustration. On Sat, 10 Aug 2013, I wrote: ExpressRip TechnicalSupportRequest Windows: I purchased Express Rip as a blind computer user because WMP12 had become hard to access. Within that folder, a subfolder was created for the album. Then the songs of that album would appear. This automated folder creation doesn't appear to happen in Express Rip. Instead, all the tracks of an album will be added singly to, in this case, Win7's Music folder. I can then cut all these tracks and copy them into a folder I create myself. Or I can create a folder in advance and make that the target folder for ripping. Either way, it's an extra step or two I wish were automated. RE: Need help with Windows Media Player
Perhaps eMusic changed your file association defaults. I know iTunes loves to do that. If so, you need to associate the .mp3 file type back to WMP. Go to the start menu search field. Type file association. Even before you finish, this item will appear. Press enter on it. Wait several moments for all the fields to come up. After that you tab around for two fields. One is a button for the program type. Once pressed, you're presented with a list of programs. With any luck, WMP will appear in this list. If not, I believe Other is an option that will bring up more programs on your system. Then you tab to the long list of file types. Here, type very quickly .mp3 to get you close to the .mp3 listing. Going by memory, you now tab to OK. Perhaps there's an apply button to press first. I hope this gives you enough information to restore your preferred .mp3 file association. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Jeff Samco Sent: Saturday, May 31, 2014 5:31 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Need help with Windows Media Player Windows Media Player has been my default player for a long time on my Windows 7 laptop. Morey, yes, I had found WMP in program files, but I hadn't thought of your suggestion for how to create a shortcut. RE: Loading Jaws on MS Surface Pro 2
Am I right in understanding that you're running the JAWS 15 application from the FS website rather than first saving it? If so, I'd suggest saving it first. It might not just overcome your installation difficulty, but also make the file readily available if you should need to do a repair in the future. You're right to wait a long time when the JAWS installation seems to get stuck. But you're equally right to give up after two hours on 87%. So, save to a place you'll remember, then execute the file from there. Installation should go more smoothly. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Jamie Kelly Sent: Saturday, February 01, 2014 1:58 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: Loading Jaws on MS Surface Pro 2 I'm able to install NVDA no problem. HI, Also for the Stream 2? Cool! I didn't know that. I must ask my vendor, if he has a such. I have a great bluetooth headset, which can automatically switch from my iPhone to a Book Sense, and back again. So when you're in a bus or a train you can both listen to audio books, and check your messages at the same time with just one headset. The brand is Jabra. The Stream now also has support for bookshare with the latest firmware update. Ok then on to the final 2 ultimate arguments for Book Sense XT. grin The weight. The Book Sense xt weighs less then the stream, and also is a bit smaller. And a really nice FM radio, when you wanna check the news on the go. I have a good sound bar with bluetooth, so I can use the Sense for music playing at a very nice and high quality from the Book Sense XT. This gives me the freedom of sitting in my sofa controlling the music playing directly and remotely from the Book Sense with no additional cabling cludder all over the place. RE: Recommendations for an audio book reader?
Like you, Aidan, I find report of poor quality very strange. For a pure reading device, I doubt anything beats or even comes close to the Stream. There is some initial groundwork needed to make the Stream work with Audible, but once it's done, the book transfer process, control-c for copy and control-v for paste, couldn't be simpler. I've never had hardware or USB problems with the Stream, nor has any of several friends who have one. I did drop one in dishwater while washing dishes, but that wasn't exactly HumanWare's fault. When I called for tech support, I didn't hide that fact, and they gave me a decent deal on a replacement. HW's customer service, which includes the company's CEO, is extremely responsive, including to customer suggestions for improvements in future software and (now) hardware upgrades. The Stream remembers where you left off not only in the current book but also in every book you start on the device. You can also add bookmarks for passages you want to return to. The memory depends on the SD card size. I know the Stream can handle 16-gig cards, and I believe it can also manage 32-gig ones. Space is not an issue. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Aidan Sent: Monday, September 30, 2013 4:53 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Recommendations for an audio book reader? No, Dane. I was suggesting that the revision distributed by HW after the review you read apparently improved the speaker quality. Like you, I assume that the quality before then was bad. That review made me balk at buying the new Stream until I read about the improvements and spoke to an HW tech guy who sounded honest and reliable. Everyone who has heard my Stream speaker is impressed, considering its size. I find HW to be responsive to user suggestions, and they seem to incorporate them pretty quickly. First off, the old stream does only charch on the adapter. No USB charching of any kind is supported. And that is sick in the time we live in. So now the new stream does not just support charching via USB, but it also charch with a pere USB adapter and only have one port wich dubble as both an charching and connection port. The thing I like about the new interface however, is that you can now charch and listen wile its connected to the pc. Connect it wile the unit is turned on, and it will charch and stil be able to play and be usable. Turn it off and connect and turn back on again and the pc will see it as a mass storage device like the old stream did. I am also sick and tired of stupid Samantha and tom drink to much wisky and so the newer acapela voices are more than usable. They really are what I can use for long hours of reading. I love the fact that now on the new stream you can set the sleep timer in custom incriments according to your set time, and not only the presets they always allowed. And the way the clock works is also very unique. They seprit the clock menus from the regular player menu. That is ausom! MP3 converter for 64-bit systems
Hi. Acoustica MP3 Converter worked nicely on my XP system with JAWS. With focus placed on the file to be converted, you press the applications key, arrow up to the conversion option and press enter. I now have a 64-bit Win7 system, and Acoustica no longer works this way. They admit it on their website. They suggest downloading and installing an application called Wow64, which I have done. With focus placed on the track to be converted, you arrow up through the applications menu choices to Wow64, press enter, and then the old Acoustica options appear. However, I could not get JAWS to stay on the conversion option I wanted, and when I switched to the JAWS cursor, the menu disappeared. My computer then stopped operating, and I had to shut it down. So, 1. Does anyone have experience using Wow64 to make a 32-bit application work on a 64-bit system? Any tips? 2. Should I give up on Acoustica? If so, what is a simple, JAWS-friendly MP3 converter program I can use on my 64-bit Win7 system instead? To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
NCH Express Rip, folder creation
After giving up trying to work with Windows Media Player 12, I downloaded NCH Express Rip, which appears to be mostly accessible. However, I can't have it do something I took for granted with old versions of WMP. When I ripped the contents of a CD with WMP, a folder was automatically created with the artist's name. Does anyone know how to get Express Rip to create folders automatically, like WMP? To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

RE: Olympus dm-620 manual, making PDF document accessible
Thank you for this tip, Aidan. The way I render difficult PDF documents accessible is to save them, then perform OCR with Omnipage. You can do OCR with the Kurzweil Reader, Openbook, Abbey finder or another OCR software program or device. Next time, however, I'll try control-shift-F5 in case it speeds up the process. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Aidan Maher Sent: Thursday, June 20, 2013 5:17 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Olympus dm-620 manual Hi, you must make sure that adobe is viewing the intire document. GoldWave stereo
Hi. I am unable to transfer a stereo recording in stereo to my computer with GoldWave. Here's what I've achieved so far and where I'm stuck. 1. I determined that the microphone jack on my Dell Dimension 4700 is mono and that in order to record in stereo, I need to use the line-in jack. 2. Activating the line-in jack on my XP was an adventure, but between sounds and Audio in the control panel and Entertainment in Accessories, I got it unmuted and the volume raised. 3. Now I can transfer a recording from my cassette player, but it is still in mono, with a bias toward the left speaker. I've confirmed with headphones that the cassette was recorded is in good, balanced stereo. 4. I thought I might have found the solution in GoldWave at something called Stereo Mixer in, I believe, configuration. this item is set at 60, whatever that means, and it was unchecked. However, I checked it. The next recording stayed mono. 5. I went to the GoldWave manual to read about stereo mix and found only one short paragraph, which reads as follows: Some devices, such as Stereo Mix or What You Hear are disabled in Windows by default and have to be enabled manually. Choose the Configure button, select the Recording tab, right-click anywhere in the list and select Show Disabled Devices, then right-click on the device in the list and choose Enable. This sounds simple enough, but I'm unable to get to this area or, if I've succeeded, right-clicking does nothing. Can anyone pull me out of this purgatory? Thanks. RE: GoldWave stereo
Problem solved. The last part wasn't with GoldWave or my computer, but my APH cassette player. The player's line-out must not be stereo. I took a chance and moved the stereo cable from that jack to the microphone jack, and all of a sudden my computer produced a stereo recording. RE: Ripping Audio Cassettes
I recently transferred a slew of music and spoken word cassettes from an APH talking book cassette player with a wire-like cable with one-eighth-inch jacks at each end and the microphone jack of my computer. APH's cassette players were reasonably high quality. Initially there was some guesswork involved in getting the cassette player volume right, but after that it went smoothly. I used the software application GoldWave to record and edit the files. GoldWave is free for the first numerous uses, after which there is a price tag of something like $30 or $40 US. RE: GoldWave, recording results only in hiss
I discovered that upgrading to and installing the current version had changed the settings in the device tab so that either the wrong speakers or the wrong recording device was specified. I had to make a few other changes in the process, but they all boil down to restoring the ones I'd previously set. You reach the device settings tab with F11, then control-tab until it's announced. My system is XP Pro. -Original Message- From: Pc-audio [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Colin Howard Sent: Tuesday, October 09, 2012 2:59 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: GoldWave, recording results only in hiss Greetings, You wrote: In case anyone is interested, I solved the problem in the devices tab. GoldWave, recording results only in hiss
After installing the current version of GoldWave and registering last night, I'm suddenly unable to record. Instead of the sound I intend to record or the silence discussed in the manual troubleshooting section, I get the kind of hiss you hear on AM radio when not tuned into a station. My setup is the same as before. I've kept the same connector between my cassette recorder and the PC's microphone jack. I'm actually trying to record a cassette I did earlier, only to discover I'd set the volume on the cassette player too loud, causing some distortion. At least the problem then was just to reduce the source volume level. I can't find any way around the hiss. The only other time I experienced this hissing sound when recording with GoldWave, I suspected I had too many applications running at once on my PC. A reboot did, in fact, fix it. However, I rebooted twice last night without having any impact. The problem persists today, including with a different cassette that I'd copied successfully to my PC via GoldWave on the weekend. does anyone have a suggestion? Recording from APH cassette recorder to Victor Stream
Hi. I'm trying to record the contents of a cassette from an APH cassette recorder to a Victor Stream. I have a wire connecting the APH's earphone jack to the Stream's input jack. I tried using the APH's out line jack, but the result is a little of the cassette's audio and a lot of static. My question is whether there's a way to reliably set the volume on the APH machine so that the Stream's recording isn't distorted. It seems to be all guesswork. If there's a better way of approaching this task, please let me know. To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org
RE: question about victor stream
Brian, when I ran into this problem some time ago, I didn't realize durable activation required use of a cable supplied in the Stream box. Below are step-by-step instructions. I'm afraid I didn't note the source, but I believe it's HumanWare. Q. How do I activate my Stream with Audible Manager? A. First, be sure you have version 5.1.0.2 or higher of Audible Manager. If you are an existing Audible customer, you can download the latest version of Audible Manager from http://download.audible.com/AM50/ActiveSetupN.exe When Install Shield asks you to choose a player device, you may choose Victor Reader Stream. Alternatively, you can also choose No mobile Device during the installation because you can also add the Stream device later from Audible Manager. Once it is installed, be sure to remain connected to the Internet and run Audible Manager. With Audible Manager running you are now ready to activate your Stream SD card for playing Audible books. Follow these steps: . Insert the SD card in your Stream. Power off your Stream and connect it to your computer using the long USB cable provided. Then power the Stream back on. You should hear the message, Player connected. Important: When using Audible Manager, you must connect the Stream. You cannot activate with your SD card in a card reader. . After connecting, Windows may open the auto play dialog asking you what program you want to use to play your USB device. Simply arrow down to the Take no Action choice or close that window and return to the Audible Manager window. . In Audible Manager, press Alt+D to open the Device pull down menu. . If you did not specify the Stream during Audible Manager installation, then choose the Add New Device option. . You will then be asked to connect to the Internet so Audible Manager can update necessary components. Select the YES button to proceed. . Audible Manager will then present a list of possible devices. Arrow down the list to Victor Reader Stream and select it. Then tab to the OK button and activate it. . Audible Manager will download the plug-in for the Stream and then ask to close Audible Manager to install the plug-in on your computer. Select the OK button. . Audible Manager will then close and reopen. . Again open the Device menu and choose the option to activate your device. . Audible Manager will prompt you to enter your Audible Username and password. Then press the OK button to activate your Stream's SD card. . Note that Audible refers to the Stream device as Humanwre VR Stream. The incorrect spelling of HumanWare is because there is a maximum of 8 characters for the USB device company name. . After you press OK the SD card should become activated. You can verify this because there will be a folder named $VRAudible on your SD card and a file named AudibleActivation.sys in that folder. Note that this is a system file and will not appear unless your Windows folder options are set to show hidden system files. However, you do not need to change your folder options as this will not affect use of Audible. If the $VRAudible folder is created then likely the Activation file is there. list end Q. Can I use more than one SD card for Audible books on the Stream? A. Yes. If you need to use a second SD card for Audible simply repeat the above procedure or create a $VRAudible folder on the second card and copy the AudibleActivation.sys file to it. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of brian parker Sent: Monday, July 30, 2012 8:14 AM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: question about victor stream Hi list, is anyone using a victor stream. i bought some books from audible lately, and transfered them to victor without any trouble. yesterday, i got another book from audible, but when i triy to transfer that, i get the following message. either your victor is not connected, or it is busy. check victor's configuration. well, it is connected, as i can read all its folders from my PC. i haven't as far as i know made any changes to cause this upset. humanware, suggested that, i took out the SD card, put it back in, and tried again. i have done that and have got the same result. they now suggest i reactivate victor, i don't know how to do that, and didn't do it in the first place, but just followed the procedure for transfering audible books. if anyone can help, it would be appreciated. i used to belong to a victor stream user list, but i seem to have lost the link, and don't know how to get back to the list. brian. RE: Seem to have lost my touch
Dave, I think I recall the kind of problem you're referring to. I remember that on the first Kingston SD card I purchased to use with the NLS player, a U3 file had to be removed. Via google, I found an installer specific to that application. However, in looking over my NLS player notes just now, I find the following that may provide you with a simpler solution. I may have copied it from the NLS's DTB QA. Here goes: You most likely purchased one of the newer G2 Kingston flash drives which comes with installed software that will prevent it from working with the DTB player. You must remove this software to get the drive to work. To do this, plug the flash drive into your PC and scroll through the list of folders. There should be an Uninstall option. Click on this Uninstall option, and the built-in software will be removed. Then reformat the drive using the Format option on the Context menu, and your drive should work with the DTB player. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Dave McElroy WA6BEF Sent: Wednesday, July 11, 2012 10:14 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: Seem to have lost my touch Hope this is ok for discussinh the NLS player. Tom, For locating tracks in WMP, a tip I got from David Biales' manual is to switch between the library (on the one hand) and all the other options (on the other) with control-tab. Another way of saying this is if you find yourself overwhelmed by all the tab sequencing, as I do, just press control-tab and you should be at the start of the library. Keep tabbing from there perhaps three times, and a list should appear. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Tom Kaufman Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2012 2:00 AM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: Re: Ripping with WMP [was Re: An Odd Problem (at least to me!)] Well here's the thing: I know very little about how to navigate this WMP library! Anyway back to the subject in hand, this list has a wide scope of messages on it at anyone time and some of these threads do start off on the right subject but can lead to others which aren't appropriate for the list perhaps? Well in such cases I reckon that good moderation dictates that at least a list member or 2 can point a person to another list or group which can deal with a subject more efficiently, an example of this sort of thing might be playing music on a mobile phone, its easy to start talking then about accessibility with speech which can probably be handled better on a list which is dedicated to mobile phone accessibility so the least that can be done to try and be helpful to all concern is for someone to post details of that list. Windows Media Player 11
Hi. WMP11 has six format settings for ripping CDs. I chose WAV (Lossless). WMP took a long time to go through the ripping process, and in fact never completed it, although all the tracks from the CD showed up in the designated folder. When I attempted to play these tracks, MS responded with a message to the effect that the player can't play either this CD or this format. However, when I put the same CD in just to play, not rip, WMP went right ahead. I changed the format to Windows Media Audio Lossless, and the player smoothly ripped the files to the folder. When it was done, I could play the tracks from that folder. There is nothing wrong with this CD. If I just play it, WMP operates fine. WMP can also rip and play its contents, albeit with my second choice of format. What it can't do is play files in my preferred format, even though it's one of the six ripping format options offered by the same WMP. Any ideas? RE: BW MM-1 speakers
It's a subjective judgment, I know, but I find the BW MM-1 speakers much superior to the Bose I have, which I disconnected and put away as soon as I heard the MM-1 quality. They're clear, the sound is full, the bass is balanced, and I hear words and musical moments I hadn't heard before. Installation was easy, and I needed no sighted assistance. The toggle control for on/stand-by is located on the left side of the power speaker. It isn't a button and it isn't recessed, but it sits between the upper and lower bands of cloth that circle the speaker. Similar controls appear on the right for lowering and raising the volume. To lower the volume, press the forward part of the horizontal band between the cloth, and to raise volume press the partner the back. As I understand it, the speakers bypass the PC's sound card, which surely helps maintain their quality. BW uses lit-up color codes on the power speaker to indicate various states. Red indicates off, blue on, slow-flashing blue stand-by. When connected to the PC for a firmware upgrade, the light switches to white. With this set, I find that the speakers turn off when the computer is turned off. The light turns to red. When I want to restore sound after the computer has rebooted, I need to take out and then reinsert the USB connection, then press the side of the power speaker to turn it on. When this operation succeeds, my system issues a confirming beep. Here's my reservation. The power speaker gets hot. I have it in a desk cabinet, but I've made sure it has plenty of space around it. Still, I'm sufficiently concerned that I routinely turn them off when I'm not listening to anything. I should have kept my Bose connected because I now lose JAWS's and MS's sound alerts. The Bose connected through the regular audio terminals at the back of my Dell, not a USB connection. The only BW update currently available for the speakers appears to have no real value for me. As I understand it, it keeps the speakers on standby during a reboot. On reflection, I prefer they go off completely, other than receiving power from the power cord (which does not cause the heat problem). IF BW ever replies to my request for assistance with regard to updating, I'll post their suggestion. I suggest you read the reviews at Amazon.com for more customer reactions: http://www.amazon.com/Bowers-Wilkins-Multimedia-computer-speaker/dp/B003R6U6 HG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1322861412sr=8-1 The reviews at Amazon.co.uk are also helpful. At the time I was buying, it was two customers there who talked about the heat problem. Like me, at least one customer reported concerns about BW's tech support. A note for US consumers. When I purchased the MM-1s two weeks ago, Amazon was selling it at $499 through JR. I used another seller on that same page, Geminigadget, which offered the speakers at $50 less, with shipping included. The speakers arrived in three days. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of André van Deventer Sent: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 12:52 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: BW MM-1 speakers Adrian Except for the update issue, are they really worth the extra cost do you think? RE: burning .mp3 tracks to an audio cd
Walter, a good explanation. One small correction. Windows-e takes you to Windows Explorer, not My Computer. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Walter Sent: Sunday, July 31, 2011 11:07 AM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: burning .mp3 tracks to an audio cd Hi. Ok, if your friend is running XP then they will have windows Media player. The easiest way to explain this is for him to use media player. Nero will allow him to burn as many copies of the discs as he wants but that means obtaining software and installing etc and using a programme he already has is simplist. What he sees on the screen or what his screen reader tells him will depend on which version of WMP your friend has. I'm explaining it as I have WMP 11. The first thing to do is to make sure that the files your friend wants to burn as audio files lasts no more than 80 minutes as this is the max he will get on an audio disc. Once that is established, go to the folder where he has the files to be burned, select them and copy them to the clipboard. Next do aWindows key and E which will take you to my computer. Use your arrow keys to find the CD drive, or it might be a DVD drive, it makes no difference. Once that has been located, press enter to open the folder and then do a control and V to paste the files he wants burned into that folder. Now, once that has been done, make sure there is a blank disc in the drive and then go to your file menu and use your arrow keys to go up or down until he hears write these files to CD and then press enter. The first thing your friend will be asked is what name does he want to give the CD. You need not type anything in here unless he has a name he wants to call the disc, by default, WMP will give the disc a date and time as a name if your friend doesn't. Next tab once and your friend will be given the choice of burning an audio CD or a data disc. A data disc is just another way of saying MP3 disc. Your friend will want the first option, Audio disc. Now tab once to the Next button and press either enter or the space bar, makes no difference which. What happens now is Windos Media Player will be launched. Once it has fully launched, alt/tab to the WMP window and now tab or shift/tab around WMP until you hear start burn button and press either enter or the space bar. The files your friend has chosen will now be burned to the CD and if he is patient as it could take as much as 10 or 15 minutes to burn depending on the settings, the disc will be ejected on completion and is ready to be duplicated. However, I suggest he listens to the disc first before duplication to check for unintended errors. I hope this is of help. Walter. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Ray Sent: 31 July 2011 15:38 To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: burning .mp3 tracks to an audio cd A friend of mine wants to burn some MP3 recordings to CD for distribution to a local vi group. He wants to take a master Cd to a local voluntary organisation to run off copies on their duplicator, as there are near 100 CDs to distribute. I'd like suggestions for software, preferably free, to do this. I understand it is usually possible to burn tracks to CD in Windows XP - which he's using, so comments about how and whether this can be done would be welcome too. As the subject suggests this is distribution of audio CDs, not MP3, as not all members of the group have MP3 cd players. Thanks for any help forthcoming. RE: Victor reader stream question
I believe the Soft Pack is priced at about $40. However, it is possible to convert files to MP3 through a more convoluted process. Without the Soft Pack, all note files will be recorded in that .GP format. With the free HumanWare Companion software, it is easy to convert .GP files to .WAV files. From there, you can use GoldWave or another application to convert to MP3. As I said, convoluted. Me, I'm happy to convert from .GP to .WAV, so the HumanWare Companion is a boon. You need the latest version of that software. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Blackwell, Clifford Sent: Friday, July 22, 2011 4:48 PM To: 'PC Audio Discussion List' Subject: RE: Victor reader stream question You need to have purchased and installed an optional softpack from Humanware. RE: for rob, the blind cool tech link for zoom h1 review
The recording quality of the Zoom H1 seems unquestioned. However, a number of people, here and on Amazon, keep saying it's a great recorder for the price. I'm wondering if there's a more expensive recorder that has equally high recording quality, also avoids menus and is otherwise just as simple to operate but that is more durable and possibly has slightly larger buttons or buttons that project out rather than being flush with the panel. A separate question. There is said to be no pause button, but both the Cool blind Tech presentation and the manufacturer say the play button is a play/pause toggle during recording. So am I right in inferring that when people say the H1 doesn't have a pause function, they mean only that it can't be paused during playback? -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of JULIE RODAWAY Sent: Saturday, March 19, 2011 1:06 PM To: PC Audio Discussion List Subject: for rob, the blind cool tech link for zoom h1 review http://media.libsyn.com/media/bct/bct1502ZoomH1RecorderReview.mp3 To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org To unsubscribe from this list, send a blank email to: pc-audio-unsubscr...@pc-audio.org

RE: There Is HOPE For Pandora (Roger R. Cusson)
Ray, I think I remember you live in the UK. A friend in England reported that his visit to Pandora brought up a message saying it is so far unavailable there. On this list, Roger suggested trying a proxy server to overcome national boundaries. It's been a while, but when I looked into that possibility, it seemed very complicated. My friend in England had urged me to try Spotify as a Pandora alternative, but it's available over there, not in the US. Good news for you, I hope. He isn't a screenreader user, so I can't vouch for its accessibility, but I vaguely recall positive messages on this list. -Original Message- From: pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org [mailto:pc-audio-boun...@pc-audio.org] On Behalf Of Ray Sent: Sunday, January 09, 2011 9:44 AM To: pc-audio@pc-audio.org Subject: There Is HOPE For Pandora (Roger R. Cusson) I found Reger'Roger's post on Pandora interesting, but I've never tried to listen Two questions? 1. Is this access to Pandora program in any way tied to a particular screen reader? 2. Is anyone outside the US accessing the site and all it's services? Thanks.
